The Scarlet Queen is one of many ancient deities born from the Darkness Below at the time the Tree of Knowledge was planted. Originally known by her birth name Khahrahk, the queen is the only one of her siblings to possess self-awareness. This is both a curse and a blessing, and means that she can also feel pain and loneliness. The thought of light beyond the abyss and the shade of the Tree of Knowledge causes the queen even more pain, driving her to decide that existence is painful and that it would be best if nothing existed at all.

Vowing to end all existence and the Tree of Knowledge, the queen devoured her siblings, causing her more pain as she grew stronger. Killing or subduing the other gods in her realm, she did not flee, taking the name Khnith-hgor and declaring herself the queen of the Darkness Below. She then defined the boundaries of her realm and began to divert souls there to suffer. With her realm established, the Scarlet queen declared war on all creation that would last until the end of time.

When the war began, she raped Sanna, the wisest and most beautiful inhabitant of the Darkness Below. She lay with her for seven days and seven nights, breaking her and rising in her blood. It was here that she first took the name Shormaush Urdal, the Scarlet queen. Sanna bore the queen aShe took her descendants as brides, placing a seal on each to prevent them from dying like their mother, and through them birthed seven legions to serve her, each with different powers and characteristics. With the power of her new legions bolstering her forces, the Scarlet Queen quickly subdued many of the worlds that had previously resisted her. The roots of the Tree of Knowledge began to rot and decay as they were consumed by the queen's descendants, the Paths became poisoned and dangerous to all who passed through, and the queen's realm became filled with even more cursed spirits. Other deities included the Mill, the Hanged King, the Prince of Many Faces, and Moloch. Eventually defeating all who opposed them, the Scarlet King's forces eventually reached Taproots, the core world of the Tree of Knowledge, including the Earth. The Scarlet Queen began to gain power over the Earth in the East, where the Daevite culture came to serve her. As the Daevites and the Scarlet Queen's influence spread further west, the People of the Two Trees became aware of the threat she posed, and their champion Hevel traveled east to oppose the Scarlet Queen's forces. Hevel fought against the Daevites for thirty-three years, but was eventually driven by pride to swear allegiance to the Scarlet Queen and drink deeply of the Daevites' dark magic. Hevel then took the name "Ab-Leshal" and became the Daevites' greatest general, leading an army to conquer the West. Al-Leshal led the Scarlet Queen's army to the valley where she once lived and massacred her former allies, including all of her family except her brother Set. The Daevites also burned the Tree of Knowledge and stole the Tree of Life, destroying the Hakhana guardian and pillaging her body. As the only surviving member of the valley's people who had not been enslaved, Set prayed for answers as to what he should do and was shown a path by which the Scarlet Queen would one day be destroyed. With guidance on how to achieve this future, Set founded the Thirty-Six, who spread across the earth to protect it and wait until the time was right to oppose the Scarlet Queen. Ashamed of what he had done to his family, Hevel turned against the Scarlet Queen, killing Moloch and slaughtering many of the Daevites, and in doing so, Hevel inspired those who had been subjugated by the Daevites to rise up against them across the world. Hevel then challenged the Scarlet Queen herself, who answered. Thus began the Great Flood, which wiped out the earth and time.
