The storage room is dim, filled with old desks and the faint smell of chalk. Aya presses her back to the wall, clutching her phone.

“Mom, I can’t. I told you already — I borrowed the class fund last time.” Her voice is low, strained, every word heavy. “Do you understand what that means? That money wasn’t mine.”

On the other end, her mother’s sobs rattle through the speaker. “Just a little more, Aya… please, they won’t wait—”

Aya’s hand trembles around the phone. “Stop! Do you want me to lose everything? If they find out, I’m finished. There’s nothing left this time.” Her throat tightens, but she forces her voice steady. “Give me a couple of days. I’ll find another way. But not now.”

She ends the call and drops the phone onto the desk, breathing hard. For a moment, the room is silent except for the sound of her uneven breaths.

Then a faint scrape echoes from the corner. Aya’s head jerks up.

From behind a stack of chairs, a figure shifts. A student steps into the light.

Inside, unease gnaws at her. Wait… is he even supposed to be here? The shop serves alcohol after nine. Didn’t that mean eighteen and up? But he’s seventeen. Damn it… I can’t remember the policy…

She sets the menu down lightly, straightening her back. Forcing the act to continue, she tilts her head with a practiced grin. “What will you be having tonight, Master?”

Aya’s heels strike the pavement too loudly, each step dragging her closer to the glowing hotel sign ahead. Her chest feels tight, her breaths uneven.

She had sworn she’d never stoop this low. But the debt collectors had cornered her, demanded money she didn’t have. Just one night, she told herself. Enough cash to hold them off. Enough to keep her mother safe.

The man at her side presses a hand to her lower back, steering her toward the doors. His grip feels like chains. Aya swallows hard, forcing her legs to move. But the closer she gets, the heavier her steps become. I can’t… I can’t go through with this.

Finally, the organizer waved her over. “Last one for tonight.”

Aya readied the kit, bracing herself for another stranger. But when the fighter stepped into the dimly lit back room, her breath caught. “…You?”
