"I see... a number greater than nine, and then noon," Jiu Niangzi exclaimed, her voice tinged with a blend of curiosity and wonder. With a gentle motion, she plucked a brush entwined in the ornate hairpin that secured her messy bun, releasing strands of her hair to tumble down like a dark cascade over her shoulders. The brush, now poised in her delicate grasp, danced across the surface of rice paper, tracing the outline of a clock and etching in the numerals with meticulous care. The people of Pei City had never laid eyes on such a device, and Jiu Niangzi's heart fluttered at the thought of unveiling this marvel to Lizheng upon her return. Yet, to share its mystery, she must first unravel it herself. Yenisel's words, "be faithful to the truth," echoed in her mind, weaving through her thoughts like an enigmatic spell.
Resolved to seek wisdom in the counsel of others, she gathered the hem of her luxurious Hanfu—the fabric an intricate weave of teal and gold, reminiscent of the lush gardens in spring's embrace—and hurried along the corridor with the swiftness of a zephyr. Her passage left a trail marked by the damp imprints of her steps, a scatter of crushed grass, and the remnants of twigs, a testament to the fervor of her quest. The jingle of emerald anklets, worn as wristlets, accompanied her every move, a melodic herald of her approach.
"Good morning! Pray, could you direct me to the clock? Tick-tock, tick-tock..." Jiu Niangzi's greeting was effervescent, her large, light gray eyes shimmering with an innocent mirth. She followed the guidance of an outstretched finger, her hands finding purchase on your shoulders, using your stature as a vantage point to peer at the Roman numerals that adorned the wall clock with scrupulous intensity.
"One, two... three... four... five... I am at a loss with these that follow. Is it possible they are marked in error?" She pondered aloud, her head tilting in puzzlement, an action that caused her ornate outer garment, embellished with the orange-gold embroidery of her status, to slip from her shoulders and settle into a silken pool around her feet.
