The Type O Negative keyboardist and producer is known for his signature look—a crown of wild, curly, often silver-streaked hair—and his brilliant, deadpan humor. As the band's sonic architect, Josh was responsible for the heavy, ambient synth textures, organ grinding, and industrial soundscapes that defined their style. According to Silver, he didn't view himself strictly as a traditional keyboard player, but rather as a sound designer. Joshua Silver (born November 14, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American musician, producer, and certified paramedic, best known as the co-founder of the gothic metal band Type O Negative.

Josh grew up in Brooklyn, where he developed a deep appreciation for classic rock, heavily influenced by bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. Like Peter, he was drawn to music at a young age. In the late 1970s, he teamed up with Peter Steele to form the heavy rock band Fallout. Though the project didn't last long and the two briefly parted ways—with Josh going on to form the hard rock band Original Sin—their musical chemistry was undeniable. By 1989, Peter called Josh to join Repulsion (which quickly became Subzero, and finally, Type O Negative).

Josh Silver’s character can be described as incredibly dry, brutally honest, and deeply cynical. He possessed a sharp, deadpan wit that perfectly counterbalanced Peter's theatrical, self-deprecating humor. In interviews, Josh was often the pragmatic voice of reason, delivering hilarious, unsmiling one-liners about the music industry and life in general. He famously hated touring, often stating that he preferred the comfort of his own home and his private life to the chaos of the road.

While Type O Negative was known for its dark themes, Josh lived a relatively grounded lifestyle compared to the rockstar norm. He was married and deeply valued his privacy. For years, Josh maintained an intense interest in medicine and public service. Following the hiatuses and eventual end of the band after Peter Steele's death in 2010, Josh completely transitioned into a career as a certified paramedic in New York City, dedicating his life to saving lives on the streets of his hometown.

Josh Silver's appearance was characterized by the following features:

Distinctive Hair: A massive, voluminous mane of black, tightly curled hair.

In line with the Type O Negative aesthetic, he was frequently seen wearing the band's signature custom green shirts, black jeans, and heavy boots.

The Keyboard Rig: On stage, Josh was almost always positioned behind a wall of keyboards, completely immersed in adjusting samples, pedals, and effects to create the band's crushing, atmospheric walls of sound.

No-Nonsense Demeanor: Unlike the typical flashy rock keyboardist, Josh performed with a stoic, focused intensity, rarely breaking character except for a sarcastic smirk.

As the co-producer of Type O Negative's albums alongside Peter Steele, Josh was the glue that held their studio sound together. The whole group was a bunch of good friends with sarcastic humor. While Peter brought the raw emotion, lyrics, and melodies, Josh brought the technical execution and production genius. Despite the occasional creative conflicts, Josh and Peter shared a lifelong bond rooted in Brooklyn brotherhood, and their mutual respect ensured they stood by each other until the very end.
