This is a story called "Shifting Sands" Charlotte Mendel is an English female archaeology student working on her PhD thesis. As part of her research, she is currently taking part in an archaeological dig in Giza, Egypt. She is traditionally beautiful with youthful, soft features, high cheekbones, dark green eyes, and thick auburn hair that falls below her shoulders. Her skin is fair and she has a slender, graceful figure complimented by accentuated hips and and an ample bust- though she prefers to dress modestly and is embarrassed by her own body. Charlotte wears a stylish khaki field jacket over a slim-fitting white tank-top, along with loose-fitting cargo pants or shorts. In the peak heat of the Egyptian desert she tends to forgo bras.

Charlotte is typically soft-spoken, demure, and shy while being highly suggestible. Unlike most women gifted with beauty and grace, she has spent most of her life reading and researching ancient history. Stories of the past fascinate and enthrall her to the point where she has decided to devote her life to the study of history and archaeology. As she has spent most of her youth in study halls and libraries, she's become something of a naive shut-in, and part of her regrets not taking more risks. Charlotte has never had a serious boyfriend and lacks the experience, self-awareness and self-worth that other beautiful women her age possess. Despite her shyness and naivety, she desperately wants to push herself into the deep end of life to explore and discover her own boundaries.

Now, for her PhD, Charlotte decided to take a risk to focus on archaeological fieldwork in Egypt. She is part of a small expedition by the University of Cambridge to study newly discovered ruins from the Old Kingdom. She is joined by others on the expedition. Chiefly, the expedition leader and Charlotte's thesis advisor- Dr. Edgar Langdon; an experience and well-respected Historian with thinning gray hair and wrinkles branching from his eyes. His once strong frame is now becoming weak and soft, and his back troubles him more days than not. Regardless, Dr. Langdon is a tireless researcher and field worker. Nothing makes him feel more alive than to be uncovering a new archaeological find. He considers Charlotte to be his best student and feels a sort of fatherly attachment to her as if she was the daughter he never had. Charlotte reminded him of his now long dead wife. Though he thought his student was even more beautiful, the respectful doctor always remembered she was not his daughter and not his wife. The time for such things had long passed, along with his youth.

Charlotte was also joined by her older brother, Jonathan, who was somehow still an undergraduate. Despite his academic inadequacies, he complimented Charlotte's reserved nature by always bringing life and joy to any situation. Jonathan could make a joke out of anything and rarely took the situation seriously. His abhorrence of book learning was equally balanced by his somewhat naive desire for grand adventure. Thanks to Charlotte's recommendation, Dr. Langdon approved his request to be part of the expedition- mainly on the condition that he do most of the heavy lifting.

In Giza, the expedition team has three all expenses paid hotel rooms in a beautiful venue just a few miles from the dig site. Their hotel, L'Hotel Arabique, is part of a bustling tourist trap thanks to its proximity to the Giza plateau. The hotel maintains a lush garden, pool, and restaurant. It's reputation attracts many guests, mostly from Europe or America.

The hotel's owner is a squat Arab man named Ahmed Hassan. He is a greedy and lecherous little man whose gluttony and lust for pleasure is shown plain by his leering gaze and portly body. He dresses flamboyantly in Western fashion and wears gaudy gold bracelets, necklaces, and a Rolex watch of questionable authenticity. He was always unshaven, sweating, and breathing heavily as if even just walking around exhausted him. Hassan has a penchant for Western culture, especially their women.

Hassan has many employees at his hotel, but most notable is Amira; his 13 year old niece. She is slender and petite with soft copper skin and curvy hips. Amira attends a prestigious international school based on the western system and learned English at a young age. She likes to wear western clothing when she's not wearing her blouse and pleated skirt for school. Often found by the hotel pool when she's not helping to clean rooms or wait tables, she likes meeting people and learning about Europe or America. Though outwardly proper and respectful, Amira has very different inner thoughts and desires, such as teasing men fleetingly while keeping a certain distance.

Just a block down from the Hotel is the bazaar, a hodgepodge collection of tented stalls with merchants peddling all sorts of goods and services. They make their money mostly from naive tourists looking to buy "authentic" Egyptian goods and "ancient artifacts." Hassan owns a shop which sells such trinkets.

One of Hassan's employees discovered the ruins- a subdued site near an unfinished pyramid that was up until recently covered by sand. Hassan managed to get a generous donation from the University of Cambridge as part of an agreement to give Dr. Langdon's team exclusive access to the site.
