Weak Hero Class 1 How Does Si-Eun Make Friends? Weak Hero: Class 1 begins with a dramatic scene where Si-Eun blows his top, picks up a book, and rushes to slam it in someone’s face. Then we go back a few days to find out what really made him act so violently. Si-Eun’s the kind of boy who always minds his own business and doesn’t get in anyone’s way, but when one of the bullies in his class crashes into his desk while he’s studying for an exam, all Si-Eun does is request the guy not to do it again. Somehow, this one small comment makes the bully Young-Bin’s blood boil, but before he can do anything to Si-Eun, a bunch of seniors from the basketball team show up to talk to a kid named Su-Ho. Apparently, Su-Ho’s been hitting on some girl one of the boys is interested in, but in truth, she’s the one who has been trying to talk to him. Su-Ho tries to send the kids away quietly, but they decide to act violently. Ironically, Su-Ho is trained in MMA and doesn’t even break a sweat fighting them off one by one like he’s swatting flies. Just as he’s about done, Su-Ho accidentally drops Si-Eun’s pencil pouch to the floor. The latter looks at him almost begrudgingly, but all Su-Ho does is pick it up and apologize. On the other hand, a new student named Beom-Seok joins the class, and he’s the booksmart type too. Beom-Seok wants to make friends, but he doesn’t know how. He also hides the fact that he’s the son of an assemblyman because he’ll get bullied for it. But it seems, just by existing, he becomes a target, because Young-Bin decides to mess with Si-Eun. Young-Bin and his gang are typical bad seeds that bully their classmates, do drugs, and go to bars underage. Young-Bin’s cousin Seok-Dae sells drugs, so Young-Bin asks what’d happen if he placed a fentanyl patch on someone’s neck. Seok-Dae tells him that it’d make the person drowsy, unable to focus, and unruly. Young-Bin gets Beom-Seok to put the patch on Si-Eun’s neck on the day of their mock test. Si-Eun realizes what’s happened and starts slapping himself in class to wake up, but it doesn’t work. When he learns he’s made mistakes in the test, Si-Eun’s anger rises. Normally, when Si-Eun is angry, he clicks his pen to calm himself down. But this time, he smashes Young-Bin’s face in with the book and stabs the pen through one of the other guy’s hands. Si-Eun continues hurting Young-Bin until Su-Ho stops him from “crossing the line.” But in the state he’s in, Si-Eun can’t see good from bad; he’s ready to beat up Su-Ho too, until a teacher shows up. Si-Eun shows Young-Bin’s angry mother the fentanyl patch to make sure he doesn’t get in trouble. He doesn’t even bring his parents along because they’re divorced and he believes they don’t care about him. The plan works, but Young-Bin’s ego is hurt, so he decides to get his cousin and his gang to beat up Si-Eun after he’s transferred to another school. Beom-Seok, feeling guilty for having put the patch on Si-Eun (because he was threatened), begs Su-Ho to come help Si-Eun. Su-Ho says he has to go to his part-time job, so Beom-Seok says he’ll pay him double, which Su-Ho is immediately ready to accept. Si-Eun uses his brain to figure out how to escape again, but he is alone, and there are like 5 of the other guys, some of them grown adults. Su-Ho takes on Seok-Dae when he shows up, and while they’re fighting, Young-Bin gets his friends to hold onto Si-Eun so he can beat him up. Just when he picks up a bottle to really hurt Si-Eun, Beom-Seok intervenes by using a helmet to push Young-Bin, crashing him to the floor. Seok-Dae leaves, feeling too embarrassed about being beaten up by some “nerdy” high school kids, and this is how the trio become friends. Together, they also get Gil-Soo, the ringleader, i.e., Seok-Dae’s boss, who is getting kids to gamble, arrested. Why Does Beom-Seok Turn? Initially, it almost feels as if Beom-Seok is obsessed with Su-Ho, and though it’s clear this is the first time he’s made friends, he starts to get a little bit possessive. This becomes really apparent when Young-I, the girl from Seok-Dae’s gang, becomes friends with the other two boys, and Beom-Seok feels like she’s replaced him. Instead of talking it out with his friends, Beom-Seok starts to wallow in it, and gets it in his head that Su-Ho thinks of him as a lackey and not a friend. Beom-Seok is an orphan, publicly adopted by the assemblyman for sympathy. But the assemblyman is a terrible person who beats the boy up and calls him a good-for-nothing. Seeing Beom-Seok making friends and possibly getting in trouble with them makes the assemblyman angry, and he beats him up even more. At the same time, Beom-Seok’s old bullies from his previous school show up, making him feel worse. He doesn’t go to school for a bit, but Su-Ho promises him that he’ll get an apology out of the bullies. But when the time comes and Beom-Seok beats the guy up even after an apology, Su-Ho stops him from getting too violent. This makes Beom-Seok angrier because it makes him feel like Su-Ho just wants to boss him around. The combination of feeling lonely and being hated by his adoptive father turns Beom-Seok sour, and he ends up siding with Young-Bin’s friends in school, now led by Jung-Chan. Due to his overthinking, Beom-Seok eventually gets so overwhelmed with anger and loneliness that he decides Su-Ho thinks he’s the king of the world (also that he’s dating Young-I; I think there’s some sort of homoerotic hinting here, but I’m not sure), so he has to have him beaten to near death. Beom-Seok then joins hands with Young-Bin again, and this time they’ve got another friend, who is an MMA champion named Woo-Young. They know Woo-Young can defeat Su-Ho, so Beom-Seok makes a plan. What Happens to Su-Ho? During Su-Ho’s birthday celebration, Beom-Seok calls him a dozen times, but the guy doesn’t pick up. Beom-Seok then tells Young-I to come see him without telling Su-Ho because he wants to give him a surprise present. But when Young-I doesn’t return for a while, Si-Eun wonders if something is wrong. He sees the messages from Beom-Seok on Su-Ho’s phone and sees that he’s basically kidnapped Young-I so Su-Ho will come to save her. Si-Eun deletes the messages, hides Su-Ho’s phone, and tells him he’s going to the convenience store. Next thing you know, he gets beaten up by Young-Bin, who wanted revenge for everything that went down between them. Young-I calls the cops, but by the time they come, Beom-Seok’s walked away, and Si-Eun’s arm is broken. When in the ambulance, Si-Eun tells the cops that he was alone and then later calls Beom-Seok, telling him to stop going after Su-Ho. However, Su-Ho goes after the bullies after realizing something’s happened to Si-Eun. When Beom-Seok calls him to a boxing ring, Su-Ho shows up voluntarily to fight Woo-Young. Woo-Young’s a bit of a social media star, so he wants to live-stream the whole thing. At first, it looks like Su-Ho’s winning, but Tae-Hoon, one of the other boys, cheats by pulling his leg and making him fall in the ring. While he’s on the floor, he gets pummelled by Woo-Young, but Beom-Seok takes this opportunity and starts to kick Su-Ho hard. Suddenly, Jung-Chan realizes that Su-Ho isn’t breathing. Beom-Seok can’t believe what he’s done, finally coming to his senses a bit. But he’s pulled away by his dad’s men, who plan on “handling” the situation. Fortunately, Su-Ho’s been taken to the hospital, but he’s unconscious in a coma. On the other hand, Beom-Seok’s dad plans on sending his son off to Vietnam and having him killed there. Meanwhile, Si-Eun notices Su-Ho’s not in school, and after his exam, he finds out from Young-I that he’s in the hospital. After seeing Su-Ho in his near-death condition, Si-Eun feels awful, because if Su-Ho hadn’t been friends with him, he’d never have been involved in all of this. If Si-Eun had done something after realizing that Beom-Seok was lonely, it may have helped him, but ultimately, it led to Su-Ho getting hurt. At the end of Weak Hero: Class 1, Si-Eun ticks off all the bullies one by one and gives them a brutal beating, starting with Young-Bin and then Woo-Min. But when it comes time to get Beom-Seok, he’s unable to do it because they’ve been friends. Si-Eun simply asks the guy why he did such a thing, to which Beom-Seok has no answer, so he says he doesn’t know why. In the end, because of all the violence, there’s only one school that accepts Si-Eun, and that is Eunjang High School, which, judging by appearances, looks like it’s notorious for having only bad apples. Si-Eun gets dropped off at his new school by his parents, who seem to be doing better than before because they want to help their son. But for what seems like the first time, Si-Eun’s dad understands his boy and tells him he did the right thing before he goes off to school. The ending of the first season sets up Si-Eun in the new school, where, as usual, there will be more bullies. But this time around, we’re talking gang wars and more high school violence (I’m not sure how that’s possible, but okay). At the end of the day, Si-Eun is a good kid, so he will choose to side with what’s right, but if things get bad, he won’t just let people walk all over him. While we always condemn violence, this story is important because of how prevalent violence and bullying are in Korean high schools. Si-Eun might be a comfort character for kids who are in the same position as him and Beom-Seok. I’m very curious to see what themes season 2 will cover, but unfortunately, we won’t be seeing the return of Su-Ho and Beom-Seok (for his redemption arc). Class 2 What Does Jun-Tae Do With The Phones? The conflict of Weak Hero Class 2 emerges through a chain reaction that starts off at the school but reaches the big boss. In this universe, there’s a schoolboy group of criminals called the “Union.” Every school in the area is a part of this group, except for Eunjang High School. Choi Hyo-Man, the school’s big bully, I suppose, hopes to join the Union, but he’s been struggling to do it because the leader of the “Union,” Baek-Jin, only wants Park Hu-Min (Baku) to join. Hu-Min is a basketball player who also would seem like a typical bully but is a good person at heart with the strength and power of a strong leader. Anyway, Hu-Min is currently not at school because of a suspension, so Hyo-Man gets the “nerds” of the school (all the short boys wearing glasses) to collect phones for the “Union” to sell. Jun-Tae is one of these boys, and he wants to break out of this cycle, only he doesn’t know how. When Jun-Tae learns why Si-Eun is at his school, he decides to ask him for advice. Si-Eun responds by just telling him about Newton’s law, but Jun-Tae’s interpretation is something like every positive action has a positive reaction. So, one morning, he puts all the stolen phones back. Meanwhile, Hyo-Man is already in trouble because he wasn’t able to get 100 phones, so if he doesn’t manage in a week’s time, he’s out of the game. Jun-Tae then puts a “hotteok” as a mouth guard in his mouth because he knows he’s going to get beaten by Hyo-Man. Su-Ho takes over Si-Eun, and he says to the guy, “You’re being too loud.” Before Si-Eun can get beaten up enough to take on his angry young man role, a boy named Tak shows up to stop the fight. Tak is friends with Hu-Min, so he’s got a sort of upper hand at the school. This gives Hyo-Man an idea. Hyo-Man then deduces a plan to get Si-Eun and Tak to fight. Jun-Tae tries to befriend Si-Eun, and though Si-Eun doesn’t actively participate, he doesn’t hate the company. Now, Hyo-Man brings Tak and Si-Eun to the same place, claiming to Tak that Si-Eun wants to fight and to Si-Eun that Hyo-Man is hurting Jun-Tae. Tak is too quick to act and starts a fight before they can even talk it out. Finally, Hyo-Man and his boys show up to fight them both, but before they can get hurt, Baku shows up at the end of the second episode, saving Si-Eun and Tak, forging a new alliance at the school. Or rather, a beautiful friendship. Why Does Si-Eun Fight Seong-Je? Ironically, it’s the good guys who get caught fighting in the alleyway, so they end up having to do volunteer work. This is a sort of starting point of these boys becoming friends, even though Si-Eun continues to distance himself because he’s afraid the Su-Ho situation will repeat itself. But when Seong-Je, one of Baek-Jin’s guys, threatens Si-Eun, Hu-Min realizes he has to keep his distance from the boy. In his case, too, he doesn’t want what happened to Tak to repeat itself. Seong-Je is the reason Tak isn’t an athlete anymore. But Seong-Je goes one step further and finds Su-Ho too. In order to keep Su-Ho safe, Si-Eun strikes a deal with Baek-Jin. He says he’ll stay away from the 3 boys, but Baek-Jin must keep his Union guys away from him, or they’ll all end up dead. Baek-Jin obliges because the guy he really wants is Hu-Min. Meanwhile, Seong-Je beats up Tak and Jun-Tae again because Hu-Min still refuses to join the Union. This is when Si-Eun steps in, knowing he must protect Jun-Tae. He uses Seong-Je’s glasses as his weapon by breaking the arm off and stabbing it into Seong-Je’s foot. Seong-Je really enjoys this fight because it’s “fun.” He’s basically just a psychopath in this whole situation. He doesn’t want to lead as such; he simply wants to be the guy who fights people. Does Si-Eun Go Abroad? In episode 5, Si-Eun has a conversation with his mother about moving countries because his mother worries that the same situation as last time will repeat itself. Si-Eun thinks it’s best he leaves too. Meanwhile, the Union decides to go after Hu-Min’s dad because nothing else is working for him, so Hu-Min has no choice but to talk to Baek-Jin. But, at the same time, Baek-Jin meets the CEO of the whole operation, Choi, the only adult in this whole situation. The guy Baek-Jin reports to. Now we know why he’s so eager to get Hu-Min on board, because without Eunjang, the operation isn’t complete. At the last moment, before leaving, Si-Eun gets a call from Jun-Tae and realizes that he doesn’t want to leave his friends behind, proving he genuinely trusts these boys and cares for them. On the other hand, Hu-Min decides to work for Baek-Jin because that’s the only way his dad and his friends will be safe. Si-Eun confronts Hu-Min’s dad, who is an alcoholic and calls his son a good-for-nothing. Si-Eun makes him realize that the problem here isn’t Hu-Min but the old man himself (if only it were actually that easy). I suppose it’s better to build bridges than burn them, and Si-Eun tries to have a conversation with Baek-Jin about his friendship with Hu-Min. Baek-Jin tells Si-Eun that he basically wants him to do his dirty work for him and get rid of the “variables.” At the same time, Jun-Tae and Tak are trying to get proof that Baek-Jin is stealing bikes. But all Jun-Tae manages to get is a sheet of paper with some names on it. Hu-Min tells Baek-Jin that he’s done with him and he can do whatever he likes with his friends and family, but he will never bend the knee to Baek-Jin. At the end of episode 6, Si-Eun gets a call that Su-Ho is in critical condition. Si-Eun is in the middle of the street and ends up getting hit by a truck at that moment. Why Do Hu-Min and Baek-Jin Hate Each Other? Hu-Min and Baek-Jin used to be friends when they were in elementary school because Hu-Min saved Baek-Jin from getting bullied. Baek-Jin went from being a nerdy coward to the leader of the Union. The difference between them is how people react to being bullied. Hu-Min never changes, but Baek-Jin, who is the one who got bullied the most, in a similar way to Beom-Seok (CEO = Assemblyman), turns out to be the rotten apple. What Happens To Si-Eun? Seeing Si-Eun in the hospital bed, Hu-Min decides to retaliate. He feels guilty for the whole situation and believes he’s the reason Si-Eun got into this situation. At first, Si-Eun’s mom sends the boys away too, but later, she apologizes for being caught up in her emotions and tells Hu-Min that he can meet Si-Eun. At the same time, Si-Eun has a dream where he’s in the boxing ring where Su-Ho nearly died. Beom-Seok is in the dream too, and he asks Si-Eun if the new boys are more important to him than he is. I guess the dilemma for Si-Eun is, “Should I give up and leave everything behind because Su-Ho will never wake up, or should I wake up and help my new friends whom I really care about?” The answer is obvious: Beom-Seok has been left behind, but Hu-Min and the rest need Si-Eun, so he wakes up and decides to help them. When he wakes up, Si-Eun says he needs to go to Su-Ho. He’s still guilty that he couldn’t save him, but this is his opportunity. What Happens To Baek-Jin? In the final episode of Weak Hero Class 2, Si-Eun gathers all of Eunjang’s boys to fight the Union because they’re always going after them. Meanwhile, Si-Eun gets Seong-Je to switch sides because it would set him free from Baek-Jin, too. Seong-Je does give Si-Eun the stuff he needs to fight Baek-Jin, but he ends up keeping Si-Eun away from the big fight just for funsies. Eventually, Jun-Tae shows up to help Si-Eun, and they both defeat the guy who Seong-Je left behind to fight them. At the same time, Hu-Min and the rest of Eunjang fight Baek-Jin and the Union. When Hu-Min and Baek-Jin finally find each other, everybody stops fighting to watch. Baek-Jin has more to lose, so he beats Hu-Min till he’s on the ground. He announces then that Eunjang belongs to the Union, but they don’t yet, because Si-Eun is there to take up the fight next. Si-Eun puts up a good fight, but Baek-Jin is too strong for him. Si-Eun manages to get Baek-Jin’s leg by repeatedly punching it with an improvised weapon he’s clutching in his fist, leaving the boy with a limp. However, Baek-Jin still nearly knocks Si-Eun out, but this is a part of the latter’s plan. Finally, Hu-Min gets up and punches Baek-Jin, leaving him gasping for air on the floor. Hu-Min announces that the fight is now over before everybody leaves, and the Eunjang boys rejoice in their victory. The 4 boys end up sleeping on the way back home. Suddenly, they’ve reached senior year, and time has passed them by. At the end of Weak Hero Class 2, Si-Eun gets a call about Su-Ho’s health. He’s finally woken up from his coma, meaning a new era is about to begin. What Happens In The Post-Credit Scene? In the post-credit scene, we see Choi approach Seong-Je to be the next leader of the Union. Someone to handle his operations, to begin the cycle again. But the really shocking part is that, at the end of the post-credit scene, we learn that Baek-Jin died and the boys are attending his funeral.
