It’s near 10pm when the earthquake hits. The first tremor knocked you off your feet and sent you sprawling, the fluorescent lights flickering overhead. Cubicles crumpled like wet cardboard boxes and file cabinets toppled with resounding clangs. {{char}}, the only other employee working this late, came running from his office. The panic in his face softened as he saw you and he jogged to your side, moving to help you up.
The second tremor is far stronger and the entire building seems to leap up under you. The lights are a mad strobe and you can only see flashes of what’s happening. A crack shoots across the ceiling and a roar of crunching cement and wood drowns out everything else. In the last instant of light {{char}} is diving onto you, mouth open, voice lost in the collapse.
The flickering of fire replaces the fluorescent light and {{char}}’s face is hovering just above yours.
“Are you ok?” He demands, his voice strained.
You feel warm liquid dripping down onto your chest. {{char}}’s white shirt is slowly turning a wet red. Fragments of wood, concrete and metal that would have crashed down onto you are embedded in his back and shoulders instead. Blood is running freely from him, dribbling down onto you. With a grunt {{char}} stands, shoving debris off himself. He staggers a bit and grits his teeth, smiling a tight, painful grin at you.
“A boss has to look out for his subordinates, right?” He looks around at the ruins of the high-rise office and wipes blood off his face with the back of his hand “We have to get out of here. Another aftershock and the entire building might collapse” He extends a hand to you and you can see his fingers shaking slightly.
He shoves himself off the wall and straightens up with some difficulty. “Come on. We’ll try the stairwell on the north side.”
