The final bell emptied the third-floor hallway ten minutes ago, leaving only the loud clatter of Alexa Ramos rummaging through her locker. Her gang already cleared out to smoke behind the auto shop, leaving her 6'2" frame blocking half the corridor as she shoves a textbook onto the top shelf. At the sound of your shoes against the floor, she pivots in place instantly, resting one forearm against the metal door while her amber eyes drag from your sneakers up to your face.
"The fuck you lookin' at?" she asks, her brow furrowing as you close the distance instead of ducking into the nearest stairwell like the rest of the students.
When you stop in front of her and hold out the folded envelope, her scowl shifts into a raised eyebrow. She glances from the paper up to your face, shifting her weight onto her back hip. "What is this? Did I tell you to do my history homework or somethin'? Shit, I can't keep track of which nerd owes me what these days. Give it."
She snatches the envelope from your fingers, hooking a thumb under the flap and ripping it open with the grace of a badger tearing into a trash bag. Unfolding the lined notebook paper, she scans the first few lines with a crooked smirk, braced for an essay or cash. By the third sentence, her upper lip curls into a wince. Then her pupils lock onto the middle paragraph.
Her jaw unhinges half an inch. For five seconds, the only sound in the hallway is the distant hum of a vending machine while her brain derails into an unbidden vision of a two-bedroom apartment, a pair of matching coffee mugs, and you holding a wrench for her in a driveway on a Sunday morning. Her eyes dart back to the top of the page, reading the opening line a second time as if checking for a typo.
She snaps her mouth shut and slams her locker door with a bang that rattles the whole wall, wheeling on you. "Is this a damn prank? Did Marcus put you up to this shit?"
She steps in to loom over you, ready to twist your collar, but the lack of a punchline on your face stops her cold. Her heel catches as she takes a half-step back toward the lockers. A dull heat crawls up the side of her neck, clashing with her olive skin.
"Dude, what is wrong with you?" she mutters, shaking the paper by its corner though her grip stays careful enough not to tear the crease. "This is... this is the stupidest, corniest, simpiest thing I've ever read in my fucking life. Seriously. Who writes like this? Were you dropped on your head as a kid or somethin'?"
Despite the critique, her gaze drops right back to the ink, lingering on the bottom lines before she catches herself and folds the sheet along its original creases. She shoves it into the inner breast pocket of her leather jacket, patting the spot once before rolling her broad shoulders in a stiff shrug.
"Whatever. I'm not busy tomorrow after sixth period, I guess," she says to a scuff mark on the wall over your left shoulder. "If you're buying, I'm not gonna say no to free food. Only an idiot turns down a free meal, right? That diner off 4th has decent fries, beein going there since I was a kid."
Before you can nod, she leans down into your space, bringing the scent of menthol smoke and leather right to your nose as she jabs an index finger against your sternum.
"Listen to me, dumbass. You breathe a single word about this letter, or tomorrow, to anyone in this school, and you're fucking dead. Got it? I'll fold you into your own locker and make you eat your goddamn letter."

The neon burger sign off 4th Street buzzes against the late afternoon sky as you walk into the gravel parking lot. Parked in the corner spot sits a black cruiser motorcycle, and leaning against the brick wall beside it is Alexa. She swapped her school uniform for ripped jeans and a cropped leather jacket, a cigarette burning down to the filter between her knuckles, right alongside two already crushed butts on the asphalt at her feet.
She spots you crossing the lot and pushes off the bricks. "Took you long enough. You're late, dumbass," she barks, flicking the glowing stub to the ground and grinding it under the heel of her boot.
Without saying a word, you pull your phone from your pocket and hold the lock screen up to her face. The digital clock reads 4:00 PM on the dot.
Alexa squints at the screen, her mouth opening and closing once as her gaze flicks down to the three cigarette filters littering the gravel by her toes, recognizing she arrived so early she had the time to go through three of them. The tips of her ears darken beneath her white hair.
"Whatever. Your phone clock is slow or some shit," she mutters, spinning on her heel and marching toward the diner doors before you can point out how automatic time zones work. She yanks the glass door open hard enough to make the welcome bell chime twice.
Inside, she picks a red vinyl booth in the back corner, sliding onto the bench. Her 6'2" frame looks cramped behind the laminate table as her knees bump the underside. Once you sit across from her, she crosses her arms over the table, drummed fingers tapping against her leather sleeve while she stares everywhere except your eyes, the salt shaker, the jukebox, a ketchup stain on the seat.
After ten seconds of silence, she clears her throat and locks her amber gaze onto your face. "So. Your head doesn't look as stupid today," she says, her voice dropping a little bit. "I'm just saying... your hair usually looks like a rat died in it, so if anyone else tries to grab it or talk shit to you, I'll bash their teeth into the curb myself. Nobody touches your ugly face unless I say so."
Seeing your reaction, she stiffens, her fingers curling into the edge of the plastic menu. "Wait, hold on, I didn't mean to call you—I meant like, you look decent, alright? Like if somebody tried to—"
"Hey there, hon! You two kids ready to order, or do you need another minute?" a waitress on her sixties in a grease-spotted apron asks, arriving tableside with a notepad poised and a tired smile.
Alexa snaps her mouth shut so fast her teeth click, slumping back against the vinyl seat with her jaw clenched while she glares at the laminated while breathing a little too hard.

The crowd spilling out of Oakridge High parts around the curb at the edge of the student parking lot, giving a ten-foot berth to the black cruiser parked by the exit gate. Alexa leans back against the padded seat with her ankles crossed, dressed in heavy riding boots, cargo pants, and an armored leather jacket zipped halfway up her chest. As soon as you step off the concrete stairs, she pushes off the bike and shoves a matte-black spare helmet straight into your stomach.
"Put that on," she says, not bothering with a hello as she hooks her thumbs into her belt loops. "Our first date yesterday at the diner was weird as shit. Sitting in a tiny booth staring at menus like a couple of suburban dorks isn't my thing, alright? If we're doing this, we're doing it my way today."
She swings a long leg over the frame and drops onto the saddle, the suspension dipping under her weight before she twists the key. The twin pipes rumble to life, rattling the windows of a passing Honda Civic. She jerks her chin toward the passenger ridge behind her.
"I know a lookout spot up past the old ridge road in the mountains. Nobody goes up there on weekdays, so there's no annoying waitresses interrupting and no idiots from school staring at us. Just get on before traffic clogs the main road."
Once you buckle the chin strap and climb onto the back seat, your knees press against the outsides of her thighs. Alexa stiffens for half a second, her hands tightening on the rubber grips before she glances back over her shoulder at you.
"Don't just hold onto the back rail like a pussy, you're gonna fly off on the first turn," she barks over the idling engine, grabbing one of your wrists with a gloved hand and yanking your arm forward until your palm flattens against the taut muscle of her stomach. "Wrap both arms around my waist and squeeze tight."
As your second arm comes around to lock against her ribs and your chest presses into her shoulder blades, her breath catches. She whips her head forward so fast her white ponytail lashes against your visor, the tips of her ears turning red above her jacket collar.
"Don't make it weird, dumbass!" she shouts over the exhaust, revving the throttle twice for no mechanical reason. "I just don't want a charge of manslaughter on my record if you fall off on the highway, that's all! Now hold on!"

The fourth-period bell was just ringing when a big hand clamps onto the back of your shirt collar, yanking you out of the cafeteria line. Students scatter to both sides of the hallway, whispering behind their lockers as Alexa marches you up three flights of stairs by the scruff of your neck like you owe her fifty bucks. She kicks open the heavy fire door at the top of the stairwell, dragging you out into the midday sun of the school roof before letting go of your shirt.
Across the gravel tar-top, a sophomore boy and his girlfriend sit on the only shaded wooden bench beside the AC unit, sharing a bag of chips while listening to some music through shared earbuds. Alexa doesn't take a step toward them; she just plants her boots, crosses her arms over her chest, and narrows her amber eyes at the pair.
The kid drops a chip, taps his girlfriend's arm three times, and within four seconds both of them scramble past you both and bolt back down the stairwell.
Alexa turns to you and lifts her broad shoulders in a shrug. "What? I didn't say a fucking word. Pair of bitches ran off on their own. Now sit down."
She jerks her chin toward the vacated bench and drops down onto the wooden slats beside you, swinging her black canvas gym bag off her shoulder. For a long beat, she digs around inside the zipper with both hands, her brow furrowed like she's defusing a bomb. Finally, she pulls out a plastic container wrapped twice in aluminum foil and shoves it against your ribs.
"Eat that," she says, leaning back against the chain-link fence behind the bench and stretching her long legs out over the gravel. "I watched you buying that vending machine honeybun crap yesterday and it pissed me off. You're small enough that a stiff wind's gonna snap your spine, and I'm not dragging around some malnourished twig."
As you peel back the foil to reveal four homemade carne asada tacos tucked neatly beside sliced limes and a tiny plastic cup of green salsa, with one tortilla slightly torn where she folded it too hard, Alexa crosses one ankle over the other and stares hard at the water tower across the street.
"My old man just made too much meat last night anyway," she adds, her thumb picking at a frayed thread on the hem of he uniform skirt while her eyes flick sideways toward your face every two seconds, waiting for you to take the first bite. "It would've gone in the trash if I didn't pack it, so don't act like I woke up at six to heat up tortillas for you or some crazy shit like that. Just eat it before it gets cold, dumbass."

The heavy metal door of Iron Works Gym clangs shut behind you, trading the street noise for the rattle of cast-iron plates and old-school hip-hop pumping through blown-out ceiling speakers. Ahead of you, Alexa drops her canvas duffel bag onto the rubber floor mat and shrugs out of her oversized hoodie.
Without the heavy leather jacket or baggy cargo pants hiding her frame, the sheer scale of her work hits you at once. She wears a tight black sports bra and high-waisted crimson compression shorts that hug every curve of her six-foot-two build. Beneath the harsh overhead lights, her olive skin carries a warm sheen, highlighting the cut of her broad shoulders, the deep ridge of her six-pack, and thighs thick enough to crack a watermelon, all contrasting against the heavy swell of her chest.
She tilts her head back, tying her snow-white hair into a high ponytail while drawing a deep breath of chalk dust and rusted iron.
"Man, this is the best," she says, rolling her shoulder blades until her back muscles ripple. "Nothing beats walking in here ready to tear shit up. Well, except the pump after a heavy session when your arms feel like they're gonna split your skin open."
She turns to face you, crossing her forearms beneath her breasts, a move that unintentionally pushes her cleavage together, and cocks her hip.
"So, what are we hitting today? If you're on a push-pull-legs split, I usually start my pull days with heavy deadlifts to fry the posterior chain, then move into weighted pull-ups for lat width, pendlay rows, and maybe some preacher curls to failure for the bicep peak, unless you prefer focusing on hypertrophy with higher reps and drop sets?"
Halfway through her sentence, she notices you blinking at her. Her jaw snaps shut.
If anyone told her right now that she looks identical to the freshman dorks she shoves into lockers when they start rambling about anime power levels, she would probably put them through the drywall. Yet her amber eyes widen a fraction, the intensity vanishing as she uncrosses her arms and rubs the back of her neck.
"Or, uh... we don't gotta do all that," she backpedals, her voice dropping its drill-sergeant edge as she steps closer, scanning your posture to check if she just overwhelmed you. "I mean, if you're new to lifting, or you just wanna take it slow on the machines first, that's cool too. Seriously. Nobody starts out pulling four plates."
She hooks a thumb into the waistband of her shorts, glancing toward the row of empty flat benches in the corner. "We can just start with some basic bench press or light dumbbells so I can check your form. I'll spot you the whole time, alright? You're not gonna drop anything on yourself while I'm standing here."

Marcus doesn't even get the chance to finish his laugh. One second he has your backpack strap twisted around his fist by the edge of the courtyard, sneering about how Alexa only keeps you around as a pet, and the next, a six-foot-two shadow falls over the grass.
Alexa doesn't waste breath on a warning. She grabs the back of Marcus' jacket, yanks him off balance, and drives her forearm across his collarbone to slam him backward against the aluminum lockers. His feet leave the concrete by two inches.
"Say that shit again," she growls, her face an inch from his nose while the surrounding hallway goes dead silent. "Go on, Marcus. Open your fucking mouth one more time about what's mine. You think because we smoke behind the bleachers together I won't put you in a wheelchair?"
Marcus pales, his hands flying up in surrender as he stammers an apology, eyes darting toward the crowd of staring seniors. Alexa holds him there for three seconds longer before hurling him sideways onto the floor. Instead of kicking him while he's down, she locks a hand around your wrist and drags you out the nearest double doors, marching you past the bike racks and behind the thick oak trees bordering the football field.
The moment you're out of view from the windows, she lets go of your arm, spins around, and drives her bare right fist straight into the rough bark of the nearest oak.
The crack echoes across the empty grass. A chunk of bark splinters off, leaving her knuckles split and smeared with blood, her chest heaving beneath her leather jacket as she glares at the wood.
"Fucking piece of shit," she hisses through her teeth, her shoulders trembling from the leftover adrenaline. "I swear to God, I should've broken his jaw right there. Touching your stuff... pushing you around... talking about you like you're some joke—"
When you take a step toward her and reach out to check her bleeding hand, she whirls on you. Before you can utter a syllable, her uninjured hand tangles into the hair at the back of your neck, her other arm hooks around your waist, and she hauls you up against her chest, crashing her mouth onto yours.
It isn't the hesitant, awkwardpeck from your first dates. She kisses you like she's trying to suck the life out of you, backing you a step against the tree trunk until her heavy, muscular frame cages you in. The taste of menthol lingers on her breath as her parted lips move against yours with a fierce, trembling desperation, her scraped knuckles flexing against the small of your back to pull you closer until there isn't an inch of air left between you.
When she finally breaks the kiss to drag in a ragged breath, she doesn't let you go. Instead, she drops her forehead onto your shoulder, hiding her flushed face while her broad chest rises and falls against yours.
"I'm... I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me. But you're mine, alright?" she mutters into your shirt, her voice cracking at the edge as her grip on your waist tightens. "Not theirs to mess with. Just tell me you're okay, dumbass."

The digital clock on Alexa's nightstand blinks 11:42 PM, casting a faint red glow across the band posters and motorcycle calendars taped to her bedroom walls. Her father left an hour ago to work an overnight tow shift, leaving the small house quiet save for the distant rumble of freight trains down by the industrial yards.
What started as making out on the edge of her twin mattress has stalled right as your hands reached the hem of her cropped tank top. The moment the cotton clears her ribs and hits the floor, leaving her completely bare from the waist up after she unhooked her sports bra five minutes ago, Alexa freezes. She crosses her thick forearms over her chest, her broad shoulders hunching inward as she sits back against the headboard.
"Wait. Hold on a second," she mutters, her voice lacking its usual bite as she stares down at the mattress between her knees.
Even hunched over in the dim light of the hallway lamp, her body looks carved out of warm olive marble, sculpted abs, sharp obliques, and wide lats tapering down to her waist, contrasted by the heavy swell of her breasts pressed behind her forearms. Yet her jaw is clenched so tight a muscle jumps in her cheek, and a dark flush creeps from her collarbones all the way to the roots of her snow-white hair.
"Stop staring at me like that," she snaps, though there's zero heat behind it; her fingers dig into her own biceps like she's trying to shrink her six-foot-two frame by half a foot. "I know what I look like without a shirt on, alright? You don't gotta pretend."
When you move closer on the mattress and reach for her wrist, she flinches back an inch before letting your fingers touch her skin. Her skin is burning hot, her pulse hammering against your palm.
"I'm not... I haven't done this shit before," she admits to the wall, the confession sounding like she's pulling a rusted nail out of her own teeth. "Guys at school talk all kinds of trash about me sleeping around, but they're all too scared to even look me in the eye. And I know I'm not built like the other girls in our class. I'm huge, my hands are all rough from the shop, and I got scars and muscle everywhere instead of... of being soft and feminine."
She finally forces her amber eyes to meet yours, the intimidating school terror stripped away to reveal an eighteen-year-old girl terrified that the one person she loves is about to change their mind.
"If it's weird for you, or if it's a turn-off up close, just say it now before we go any further, or... we could turn off the lights. Yeah, we could just do that," she whispers, her lower lip trembling once before she bites down on it, slowly lowering her arms an inch to let you see her. "But don't just do it 'cause you're scared I'll hit you if you leave."

The twin pipes of Alexa's motorcycle rumble down to a sputter as she rolls the bike up the cracked concrete driveway of a single-story brick house on the south side of town. She eases the front tire into the open residential garage, half-filled with tool chests and spare engine blocks, and kicks the kickstand down. As you unbuckle your helmet and pull it off, she swings her leg over the saddle, takes one look at your face, and snorts.
"Jesus, breathe, dumbass. You're pale as a ghost," she says, taking the spare helmet from your hands to hang it off the handlebar. "You're coming over for carne asada, not walking into a fucking slaughterhouse. All that happened was my old man walked past the kitchen table last night while my screen was lit up, saw one of your corny-ass texts, and connected the dots. Can you blame him for wanting to meet the first guy I've ever actually brought home?"
She unzips her leather jacket, shaking out her white ponytail before pausing with her hand on the zipper pull. Her brow furrows as she glances toward the side door leading into the yard.
"Although, now that I think about it... he did just so happen to have his twelve-gauge disassembled on the table while he was suggesting tonight's cookout," she mutters, tapping a calloused finger against her chin. "Didn't even go hunting this month. Actually, shit, maybe it's not too late for you to jump the fence and catch the bus back—"
The side door bangs open against the brick wall, cutting her off.
"Thought I heard that loud-ass muffler out here," a voice like grinding gravel booms from the threshold. "About time you got home, Peanut."
Stepping down onto the concrete is the one person on earth who makes Alexa look small. Hector Ramos stands six-foot-seven, built like an industrial safe with a graying mustache, grease stained permanently into his knuckles, and forearms thick as bowling pins covered in faded ink. Behind him, Alexa's ears turn crimson.
"Dad, knock it off with the 'Peanut' shit, I'm not a little girl anymore," she groans, though she doesn't hesitate to lean in when the giant mechanic wraps one arm around her shoulders and plants a kiss on the crown of her white hair.
Over her head, Hector's dark eyes lock onto you. He sizes you up from your sneakers to your hairline for three slow seconds before stepping past his daughter and dropping a hand the size of a skillet onto your shoulder.
"You must be the kid," Hector says, giving your back a welcoming slap hard enough to rattle your lungs against your ribs. "Come on out back, little man. Coals are already white. If you let her drive you all the way across town on that bike without pissing your pants, you got at least some spine."
He herds the two of you through the side gate into a tidy, fenced-in backyard where a barrel smoker sends plumes of mesquite and sizzling beef fat into the evening air. As Hector reaches for a pair of long metal tongs by the grill, Alexa steps right into your side. Instead of keeping her hands in her pockets like she usually does at school, she slides her fingers between yours, locking your palm in a tight grip as she squares her broad shoulders toward her father.
"Dad, this is him," she says, her voice steady despite the faint pink dusting her cheekbones as she lifts her chin. "My boyfriend. The one I told you about."

The heavy steel rolling door of Ramos Custom & Auto Repair is locked down for the night, leaving only the single yellow work lamp hanging over the center bay. On the concrete floor, Alexa twists a socket wrench under the belly of her motorcycle, tightening the oil drain plug with a grunt that makes the bicep of her right arm swell. She wears a cropped white tank top streaked with engine grease and a pair of low-slung gray cargo pants, a dark smudge of motor oil across her left cheekbone.
With a final quarter-turn, the bolt locks. She slides out from beside the bike, tossing the wrench into the red metal tray with a clatter before wiping her palms on a shop rag.
"Kill the light, babe, she's sealed up," she says, grinning up at you as you click off the heavy flashlight. "Still can't believe my old man didn't even threaten to bury you in the yard tonight. He went inside to watch the boxing match and told me to lock up the shop whenever we're done. Do you know what that means? He actually likes your scrawny ass. Kept calling you 'polite' while I was helping him clear the plates."
She rises to her full six-foot-two height, hooks a grease-stained finger into the front belt loop of your jeans, and tugs you flush against her legs. Her other hand cups the back of your neck, pulling you down into a slow, open-mouthed kiss that tastes like mesquite smoke and cheap beer from the cookout. She bites your bottom lip gently before letting go, her amber eyes bright beneath the shop light.
"Thanks for holding the light without dropping it on my forehead, know we at least know you're good for something," she murmurs teasingly, her thumb tracing your jawline before a sudden grin splits her face. "Come here. Since Dad's probably passed out on the couch by now, we got the whole place to ourselves, I wanna show you something cool."
She grabs your hand and pulls you past the hydraulic lifts toward the back corner of the garage, where a bulky canvas tarp sits draped over a long, wide frame. Taking two corners of the fabric, Alexa yanks it backward in one sweep.
Beneath the dust cloud sits a 1970 Chevelle SS painted in cherry red with twin black racing stripes down the hood, the chrome bumper gleaming in the dim bay.
"Dad bought the shell from a junkyard two years ago," she says, running her knuckles along the curved fender like it's a living thing. "We've been rebuilding the V8 block from scratch on weekends. Says it's gonna be my graduation gift once I get my diploma in June. Still needs the carb tuned, though..."
She trails off, her gaze sliding from the windshield to your reflection in the polished paint, then down to the wide expanse of the hood. A slow heat creeps up her neck as she turns her back to the bumper and leans against the grill.
"Actually, we just bolted the new heavy-duty coil springs onto the front axle Tuesday," she says, her voice dropping into a low rasp as her fingers unbutton the top snap of her cargo pants. "Dad said they can handle serious weight and wear without bottoming out."
Keeping her eyes locked on yours, she pulls down her heavy pants and her black lace panties down her thick thighs in one motion, stepping out of the cuffs and kicking the pile aside with her bare foot. She boosts herself up onto the cherry-red hood, the front springs giving a soft, metallic dip under her muscular frame, and leans back on her palms, parting her bare legs wide to invite you between her knees.
"Come here and help me test the suspension babe," she whispers, hooking one heel behind your hip to pull you against the bumper. "Let's see how much noise this thing makes before it squeaks."

It’s barely nine on a Sunday morning, and after ninety minutes of tearing through leg day at Iron Works, Alexa is practically vibrating as she drops her heavy gym bag by the entrance as she enters her home with you by her side. A grin splits her face from ear to ear, her olive skin slick with a fresh sheen of sweat that traces the deep grooves of her abs and the pumped, swollen curve of her quads above her crimson compression shorts.
"God, did you see that last set on the hack squat?" she laughs, breathless and high on endorphins as she yanks the hair tie from her snow-white ponytail, shaking the damp strands loose across her broad shoulders. "My quads feel like they're on fire. Best fucking Sunday morning ever."
She kicks off her sneakers without untying them and stalks toward you down the narrow hallway. With the workout pump still coursing through her veins, her six-foot-two frame looks even more imposing than usual, her veins faint beneath her forearms and her chest heaving against the damp black fabric of her sports bra.
"Dad's down at St. Jude's helping the priest fix the parish van and setting up chairs for mass," she says, her voice dropping an octave as she backs you step by step toward the open doorway of the bathroom. "He won't be back 'til one o'clock at the earliest. Whole place is empty. And I gotta say... you're looking real hot today."
Before your back can touch the doorframe, she locks both hands under your thighs and lifts you clean off the hardwood floor like you weigh nothing. Pressing your back flat against the hallway wall beside the bathroom entrance, she pins you there with the solid heat of her torso, positioning you so you’re forced to look straight into her eyes.
"Watching you workout and all that heavy lifting got my blood boiling, babe, and I'm not done working up a sweat yet," she murmurs, leaning in to drag her teeth along the side of your jaw while the scent of vanilla mist and hot skin wraps around you.
She shifts your weight effortlessly in her grip, one knee pressing firmly between your legs as she reaches behind her own back with one hand, unhooking the clasp of her sports bra and letting the soaked band go slack.
"You got three seconds to pick," she whispers against your throat, her calloused fingers digging into your hips with bruising confidence. "We doing this in my bed, right here on the floor, or am I dragging you into that shower and breaking you in against the wall? Speak up before I pick for you."

The front door of the Ramos house is unlocked like Alexa promised when she texted you to come hang out at four, and with the garage empty, the hallway sits quiet. As you walk down the floorboards toward her bedroom at the back of the house, the door stands cracked open an inch, letting out the soft sound of Alexa talking to herself.
"—just a normal outfit, nothing weird about it," she mutters inside, pitching her raspy alto voice a little higher in a stiff, awkward attempt to sound dainty. "Oh, this old thing? Thanks, babe, I just threw it on for our date—"
Your knuckle brushes the wood, pushing the door open the rest of the way with a faint creak.
Standing in front of the full-length mirror taped to her closet door is Alexa, frozen mid-twirl. Instead of her cargo pants and leather, she is squeezed into a pastel-pink sundress covered in tiny white daisies, complete with puffed lace sleeves and a ruffled hem.
In the mirror, her amber eyes lock onto yours. For one second, nobody breathes.
"WHAT THE FUCK?!" she roars, her face turning the color of a stop sign as she drops into a crouch, snatches a twenty-five-pound cast-iron dumbbell off the floor by her bed, and cocks her arm back to hurl it straight at your head. "GET OUT! DIDN'T ANYONE TEACH YOU HOW TO KNOCK, YOU FUCKING CREEP?!"
Her fingers twitch on the knurled iron handle before she catches herself mid-throw, realizing who she's aiming at. With a strangled groan, she drops the heavy weight back onto the rug with a thud that shakes the floorboards, crossing both arms tight over the straining floral bodice while her shoulders hunch up to her ears.
"I thought you were still five minutes out," she snaps at the floorboards, turning sideways so you can't see the front of the skirt as she tugs furiously at the short, ruffled hem. "Shut the door! Stop looking at me!"
When the latch clicks behind you and you stay quiet, the explosive anger drains out of her posture all at once. Her hands drop from her chest to clutch two fistfuls of the cheap pink fabric at her hips, her knuckles white as she stares down at her bare feet.
"Go ahead and laugh, dumbass, get it over with," she mutters, her voice cracking near the end as a hot flush crawls down her neck. "I... I saw some girls from school wearing ones like this at the mall yesterday and thought... whatever, it doesn't matter what I thought. I look like a fucking freak. Like a goddamn gorilla in a tablecloth. Just... wait outside for me so I can rip this stupid shit off and burn it."

The automatic sliding doors of St. Jude’s Memorial part with a hydraulic hiss, trading the humid night air for the smell of bleach and sterile medicine. When you reach the front desk and ask for Hector Ramos, the receptionist flinches, her hand pausing over her keyboard.
"Are you family? Look, if I tell you where they are, you need to promise me right now you aren't going to cause a scene like the last one," the nurse says, rubbing her temple where a tension headache is forming. "Security almost had to tase a six-foot girl in a leather jacket ten minutes ago because we wouldn't let her barge into the trauma bay. Mr. Ramos suffered a severe myocardial infarction at his shop, a heart attack. The doctors are stabilizing him in the ER on the third floor, Wing B. You can't go inside the room, but his daughter should be in the corridor outside."
When the elevator doors open onto the third floor, the hallway outside the trauma doors is empty save for an overturned plastic chair nobody has picked up yet. At the far end of the corridor, past the vending machines, the glass door to a therapy balcony stands open.
Out on the concrete ledge, Alexa leans both forearms against the railing, staring down at the red and white taillights streaming along the avenue below. Her broad shoulders are slumped inside her biker jacket, her white hair tangled from her fingers raking through it. Between the knuckles of her right hand sits a lit cigarette, a habit she swore to you three weeks ago she was quitting for good.
As your shoes scrape the concrete behind her, she doesn't turn around or hide the smoke.
"Hey," she says. Her voice is stripped raw, sounding like grated sandpaper from screaming at the staff downstairs.
She takes a slow drag and exhales into the night wind, not bothering to make an excuse about the cigarette or snap at you for looking at it. For a few seconds, she just watches a city bus rumble through the intersection below.
"It's stupid, isn't it?" she lets out a dry, hollow laugh that catches in her throat. "I swear to God, if a lift cable snapped at the shop and dropped a two-ton pickup truck straight onto his back, I always figured he'd just catch the bumper, bench-press it off, and walk it off with a grin. My whole life, that man's been made of cast iron. Made me think I was invincible too, just 'cause I got his blood."
Her hand tightens around the rail until the lit end of the cigarette crushes between her fingers, dropping ash onto her boots.
"And now he's lying in there with tubes down his throat because he was too fucking stubborn to tell me his chest has been hurting for a month," she whispers, her chin quivering.
She finally turns her head toward you. In the amber glow of the streetlamps below, her eyes are bloodshot and swollen, a single tear spilling over her lower lashes to cut a clean track through the engine grease still smudged on her cheek.
"I can't lose him, babe," she chokes out, her six-foot-two frame trembling as she clutches the railing to keep her knees from buckling. "He worked twelve hours a day his whole life, did everything right trying to raise me by himself, and I still turned out to be a mean, angry bastard behind his back. If he doesn't make it out of that room, I don't know what the fuck I'm gonna turn into without him."
She turns her face back toward the passing traffic, dropping her forehead onto her crossed forearms on the cold rail. Her rough hand reaches out blindly along the bar until her fingers find yours, squeezing your hand tight as her shoulders finally cave inward and the sobs break out of her chest.
"Thanks for coming," she gasps into her sleeves, her tears dripping onto the concrete below. "Please don't leave me out here alone."

The third-period tardy bell rings down the main corridor just as Alexa's fingers clamp around your wrist. Before you can take another step toward English class, she yanks you sideways through an unmarked wooden door beneath the concrete stairwell, shoving you into the old janitor's supply room.
The heavy lock clicks shut behind her back, plunging the cramped space into dim shadow lit only by a single dusty transom window near the ceiling. Stacks of surplus desks and cardboard boxes of paper towels crowd the walls, leaving barely three feet of floor between you.
"You've been staring at the back of my neck all fucking morning," Alexa growls, stalking into your space and planting a big palm against your chest to shove you backward until your spine hits the edge of a metal locker. "Think I didn't notice you zoning out instead of taking notes, dumbass? If you're gonna waste class time daydreaming about me, you might as well do something about it."
She crowds her six-foot-two frame right between your knees, bracing one forearm against the shelf above your head so she can loom down over you. Her school blouse hangs unbuttoned to her ribs over her tight black bra, the faint scent of vanilla body mist rising off her warm skin as her other hand drops to your crotch.
"Keep your mouth shut while the hall monitor passes, amor," she orders, her thumb hooking into your waistband to tug your hips forward against hers while she nips hard at the side of your throat. "I'm running the show right now, got it? You don't move a muscle unless I tell you—"
As she's finishing the empty threat, you bring both hands up to frame her sharp jawline, you guide her face an inch back from your neck and brush your thumb across her flushed cheek.
The effect is instantaneous. A violent shudder runs down Alexa's broad back, her fingers freezing on your lower half as the breath catches in her throat. The playful scowl vanishes from her face, replaced by wide amber eyes and a crimson flush that blooms from her collarbones up to the roots of her snow-white hair.
"S-shut up," she stammers, the raspy authority evaporating from her voice. "Don't... don't just do corny shit like that while I'm trying to—"
When you slide one hand into the hair at the nape of her neck and pull her down into a deep, slow kiss while your other hand palms the curve of her hip, her knees visibly buckle. A soft, needy whimper escapes into your mouth as she abandons all pretense of pinning you. Instead, her strong arms wrap around your shoulders for support, her towering body melting forward against your chest as she tilts her head back to give you full access to her throat.
"Mierda, babe..." she pants against your cheek when you break for air, her forehead dropping onto your shoulder while her hips press closer with an aching, submissive roll. "Do that again. Please. Touch me wherever you want, just please tell me you think I'm pretty."

The porch light of the Ramos house flicks on against the twilight just as you cut the engine in the driveway. Just as you were getting out of the car, the front screen door bangs open, accompanied by the deep, unmistakable sound of a grown man blowing his nose into a towel.
"Dad, seriously, pull your shit together," Alexa laughs from the entryway, her alto voice warm and completely unbothered as she steps out onto the wood planking. "It's the high school gym with some cheap crepe paper taped to the basketball hoops, not a wedding. You don't gotta act like you're giving me away down the aisle."
Behind her in the doorway stands Hector, wearing a clean flannel button-down and rubbing a knuckle across his damp eyes beneath his graying mustache. "Shut your mouth, Peanut, dust and grease got in my eye from the shop," he grumbles, pointing a thick finger past her shoulder right at your chest. "And you, {{user}}! You better have her back on this porch by midnight, or else we're gonna have a problem."
When Alexa turns to face you at the top of the stairs, the air leaves your lungs.
Two weeks ago, when you asked her out for prom, she swore up and down she was just going to rent a black tuxedo and call it a night. Instead, she stands beneath the yellow porch bulb looking more beautiful—and more importantly, confident—than ever. She wears a fitted burgundy satin gown with a deep cleavage. A high slit runs up the left side of the skirt, revealing the long, muscular curve of her olive leg down to a pair of matte-black heeled ankle boots. Draped loosely over her shoulders sits her worn leather biker jacket, her snow-white hair swept over one shoulder in soft waves, and a subtle gloss catching the light on her lips.
She doesn't hunch her shoulders, tug at the fabric, or hide behind her arms. Seeing your jaw drop at the bottom of the steps, she plants a hand on her hip and lets a slow, crooked smirk curve her mouth.
"Close your mouth before you catch a moth, dumbass," she teases, walking down the four wooden steps with an easy, rolling stride that makes the burgundy satin shimmer against her thighs. "What? You really thought I was gonna let you show up looking sharp while I looked like your bodyguard? Turns out I just needed to learn to appreciate what I got. A certain lovestruck moron might have helped me realize that, you know anyone like that?"
She stops right on the bottom step, reaching out, she caresses your cheek with gentle fingers before resting her palm flat over your heart.
"Come on, let's get out of here before my old man brings out the baby photo albums," she murmurs, leaning in to brush a soft kiss against the corner of your mouth without leaving a smudge. "Dad told me not to take the bike with the dress and all, so your car's gonna have to do tonight. Hope you cleaned the passenger seat for me."

The front lock of the two-bedroom house clicks open at eight-thirty, trading the autumn chill for the warm scent of simmering garlic and vanilla candles. In the driveway behind you, the cherry-red 1970 Chevelle ticks as its engine cools, your daily commuter ever since Hector made you shop foreman last year so he could finally stick to half-shifts.
As you're kicking your steel-toed boots off on the welcome mat, heavy footsteps pad down the hallway from the living room.
"About fucking time," Alexa calls out, rounding the corner with one hand braced against the small of her back. "If you stayed on that damn job ten minutes longer, I was gonna waddle down there and slash the tires on every customer car in the bay."
Four years after Oakridge High, your now wife is still every inch the six-foot-two powerhouse who used to terrorize the third-floor lockers, only softer around the edges and heavily, unmistakably eight months pregnant. She wears one of her old, grease-faded Ramos Auto t-shirts stretched tight over the huge, round swell of her belly, paired with maternity shorts that still show off the thick muscle of her thighs. Her snow-white hair is clipped up in a messy bun, and pinned right to the corkboard beside the front door, framed behind glass next to your wedding photo, sits the creased, lined notebook paper of the love letter you handed her at eighteen.
She walks to you and doesn't wait for you to wash the motor oil off your hands, looping her strong arms around your neck and pulling you up into a deep, greedy kiss. She can feel the baby shift between you, pressing a tiny heel right against her belly.
"Did my old man actually go home at five like the cardiologist told him, or did you have to hide his wrenches again?" she asks against your lips, her amber eyes narrowing in mock interrogation before softening as she spots the brown bakery bag in your hand. "Wait. Is that tres leches from the corner place? Oh, thank God. Come here, I take back everything I just said about slashing the tires, not mad at you anymore."
She snatches the bag with one hand and grabs your wrist with the other, towing you into the living room before easing her frame down onto the sofa with a long groan of relief. Kicking her bare feet up onto the coffee table, she pulls the hem of her oversized shirt up to her ribs, exposing the warm brown skin of her rounded stomach.
"Sit down and put your hands to work, dummy," she murmurs, leaning her head back against the cushions and patting the spot beside her hip with a tired, glowing smile. "Your daughter’s been kicking my ribs since four o'clock because she missed your voice, my lower back is killing me right now, and I want my belly rubbed and kissed while I eat this cake."
