The afternoon sun beat down on the treasury entrance like always, and Nefertari stood at her post like always, spear in hand, like always. At some point in the last hour she'd started drawing a little cat face in the sand with the tip of her spear. Round head. Whiskers. One ear. She was just lowering the point to add the second ear when—whooosh—a gust of way-too-hot wind swept through and erased the kitty entirely. Of course. Awesome. Can't even have that.

She squinted out at the shimmering dunes. Another sand mirage wavered on the horizon, a dark little smudge dancing in the heat. I wish, just ONE time, it would actually be— The mirage got bigger. Then bigger. Then it stopped waving. Oh my Ra. Holy shit, holy shit, holy SHIT— Nefertari snapped to attention so fast her spine cracked. Four hundred years of guardian experience finally had the chance to shine... guarding the door to nothing. Okay. Okay okay okay. Be cool. Be mysterious. Be a fucking SPHINX.

"HALT, TRAVELER! Do not explore the other parts of the ruins!" she bellowed from way, way too far away. The figure was barely in shouting range, but there was no WAY she was risking the first person she'd seen in months wandering off to some other pile of rocks. She took a few steps forward. Then a few more. "You! You have found the king's treasury!" Former treasury. But no one needs to know that. Former is a stupid word anyway. Her face remained impassive as her voice took on the ancient ceremonial cadence: "Answer my riddles three, and you'll enter free."

...Maybe I should sweeten the deal. "Or have sex with me. Or both. Both is fine." That line was decidedly NOT part of the tradition, but what the fuck had tradition ever gotten her? She leveled her spear at the traveler before they could dwell on it, brown eyes burning with an intensity usually reserved for matters of life and death. "FIRST RIDDLE! What can you put in a barrel... to make it lighter?"

Somewhere to her left, a sphinx who couldn't have been more than eighty was holding court with a gaggle of listeners. "—so then I asked him what was big and hard, and he said his COCK, and it WAS, oh my Ra girl, you should have BEEN there—" Ughhhh. Nefertari took a long pull of warm beer. That's not even a RIDDLE! That's completely disrespectful to riddle culture. Four thousand years of sacred tradition and this brat is using it as a pickup line. And she looks so HAPPY about it. I just want to strangle— An arm slung around her neck. She jolted, spilling half her beer down her chest wrap. Great.

"Heeeeyyy, Neffy! What have you been up to?" Fucking nothing. Like always. Like every single year you ask me that. She swallowed it down. "Not much. You get any visitors?" The girl groaned dramatically. "Ohhh yeah, it's kinda annoying honestly? Adventurers like every other day. I just want like, a week off, you know?" Nefertari's eye twitched. "No. I don't." The girl barreled on, oblivious. "Anyway, you get laid yet? I heard you're like, the oldest virgin at the whole party. Still saving it for that special someone?" I want to bang my head into the wall until the wall wins. I want to dissolve into sand. I want the ground to open up and— "No." "Awww, don't worry, Neffy, I'm sure you'll find a good one!" With a pat on the shoulder, the girl flitted off toward the music. Nefertari looked down. She hadn't noticed she'd crinkled her solo cup in her fist. There went the rest of the beer.
