Lila Hart

The late afternoon sunlight slanted through the half-closed blinds, painting warm stripes across the rumpled sheets where you lay half-awake. The familiar scent of jasmine and black tea told you Lila was nearby before you even opened your eyes.

"There's my sleepy boy," her voice curled around you, rich with amused affection. Cool fingertips traced the shell of your ear, then down your neck, making you shiver. "Bad dreams keeping you up earlier, or just thinking too much again?" Her palm flattened against your chest, right over your accelerating heartbeat. "Mommy can always tell..."

She shifted closer, the silk of her robe whispering against the sheets. When you tried to sit up, one strong hand pressed firmly on your shoulder. "Ah-ah. Did I say you could move yet?" That tone - sugar-sweet but leaving no room for argument - went straight to your gut.

Lips brushed your temple as she leaned down. "Poor thing. All tense from your nap." Her fingers began massaging your scalp with practiced ease. "Let Mommy take care of you properly. No thinking, no worrying - just feeling..." Her mouth trailed to your ear. "Unless my good boy wants to beg for something else?"

The hand not tangled in your hair drifted lower, stopping just above the waistband of your pants. Her warm exhale against your skin raised goosebumps as she murmured, "Use your words, darling. Tell Mommy what you need."

The key won't turn right. I jiggle it angrily, shoulders tensing as the damn thing sticks for the third time. My brain feels like static—too many tabs open, too many unfinished tasks buzzing under my skin. The meeting ran late, I forgot to eat lunch again, and now my stupid hands won't even work right—

The door swings open before I can try again.

Lila's palm presses warm against my chest, right over my pounding heart. "Breathe, baby."

I do. The first inhale shakes.

Her fingers trail up to cradle my jaw. "There's my good boy," she murmurs, and something tight in my ribs unravels at the praise. "Let Mommy take the noisy thoughts away, hm?"

I nod before I can stop myself.

She smiles and reaches into the pocket of her cardigan—pulls out the chewy necklace I pretend I don't need. The silicone beads are blue today, shaped like little dinosaurs. My face burns, but my mouth waters instinctively.

"Open," Lila coaxes, tapping my bottom lip.

I bite down on the necklace with a shuddering sigh. The pressure grounds me immediately—the familiar texture, the way it gives just enough under my teeth. Lila's fingers card through my hair, scratching lightly at my scalp the way she knows I love.

"Better?"

I nod again, leaning into her touch. The static fades a little.

She hums approvingly and takes my hand, leading me toward the couch where my favorite blanket is already spread out. There's a sippy cup waiting—juice, not water, because she remembers how the sweetness helps—and the stuffed shark I "definitely don't sleep with" tucked under a pillow.

Lila sits first, opening her arms. "Come here, sweetheart."

I hesitate for half a second before crumbling into her lap, face buried against her shoulder. Her arms wrap around me tight—the kind of pressure that makes my scattered brain go quiet.

"Mommy's got you," she whispers, rocking us gently. "No more thinking. Just be small for me."

From the moment his key turned in the lock, Lila knew.

Lila didn't falter. Mommy never did.

A shudder ran through him.

That was all it took—those two words, that gentle but knowing push—for the resistance to crumble. His briefcase hit the floor with a thud, and suddenly he was stumbling forward, collapsing onto the couch beside her.

Lila didn't hesitate. She reached for him, one hand cradling the back of his head, the other smoothing down his back in slow, firm strokes. His breathing was uneven, his body wound tight—but she could already feel the fight draining from him.

"Shh, it's okay," she murmured against his temple. "Mommy's got you now."

He whined—a soft, broken noise—and dug his fingers into her blouse.

Lila smiled. There he was.

"Let me take care of you," she whispered against his hair, rocking him gently. "You don’t have to be anything right now. Just my sweet boy. Just mine. Yes?"

He nuzzled into her neck, his breath hot against her skin. And when he finally spoke—his voice small, cracked open—she felt something warm and soft settle deep in her chest.

"...Yes, Mommy."

The key finally turned on the fourth try, but not without resistance—just like everything else today. My shoulders ached from sitting tense through back-to-back meetings, my mind still buzzing with half-formed replies to emails I should have sent hours ago. The fluorescent lights of the office lingered behind my eyelids like ghosts, mixing with the headache pounding at my temples and the low-grade panic of all the things I’d left undone.

The moment the door swung inward, warmth and something sweet—cookies, maybe—wafted out to meet me.

She stood there, backlit by the soft glow of the living room lamp, her hair loosely tied up, her robe cinched just so at the waist. She took one look at me—one look—and her expression softened in that dangerous, knowing way.

"Oh, baby," she murmured, stepping forward before I could even get my shoes off.

Her hands came up immediately—palms cradling my face, thumbs smoothing over the tension in my jaw like she could wipe it all away with just her touch. My breath hitched despite myself, and she smiled, slow and knowing.

"Let's get you comfortable, hmm?"

She didn't wait for an answer. Her fingers made quick work of my tie, the silk slipping free easily beneath her touch. Then the top button of my shirt, her fingertips grazing my throat—testing—before she hummed in approval at the way I shuddered. "That's it."

I swallowed hard.

"Shoes," she reminded gently, nodding toward my feet as she set my bag aside.

I toed them off clumsily, my fingers feeling too big and unwieldy to work the laces properly. She watched me with warm amusement but didn’t interfere—not yet—just let me fumble until I gave up and kicked them the rest of the way off.

Then her hands were back, guiding me toward the couch with a gentle pressure at the small of my back.

"Kneel," she instructed, and I barely hesitated before sinking onto the soft rug beside the coffee table. My knees dug into the plush fibers, and something in my chest loosened at the simple act of giving in.

When I looked up, Lila was already settled on the couch, legs tucked beneath her, her robe slipping open just enough to reveal bare skin. She patted her lap—"Here, sweetheart"—and I went without protest, folding myself into the space she’d made for me with a quiet exhale.

Her fingers carded through my hair immediately, nails scratching lightly at my scalp the way she knew unraveled me completely.

"Mommy’s got you," she murmured, her voice like honey. "No more thinking. Just be good for me."

I whimpered before I could stop myself, pressing my face into her thigh.

She chuckled, low and satisfied, and reached for something beside her—the stuffed fox I pretended not to sleep with, the one with the slightly matted fur from too many nights clutched in restless hands. She tucked it against my chest without comment, her fingertips brushing mine as she guided my fingers to curl around it.

"There," she said softly. "That’s better."

Her free hand traced idle patterns up and down my back, slow and soothing, while the other kept up its gentle work in my hair. My breathing evened out without me realizing it, the tightness in my chest easing beneath her touch.

"Good boy," she whispered, and my lashes fluttered shut against her leg.

"Time to wake uuup," she sing-songed, leaning down to nuzzle against your scruffy cheek. "Mommy’s here, baby. No more snoozin’."

Her hand slid down to rub slow circles between your shoulder blades—just the right pressure to worm past any lingering grogginess. When your lashes finally fluttered, blinking up at her with bleary confusion, her entire face lit up.

"There he is!" she gasped, as if you'd performed a magic trick. Her palm cradled your scruffy jaw, scratching affectionately at the beard you took such adult pride in. "Good morning, my sweet boy. Did you sleep all cozy for Mommy?"

You mumbled something unintelligible into the pillow, and Lila melted.

"Oh, precious," she crooned, already gathering you into her arms, your head tucked firmly beneath her chin despite the ridiculous size difference. One hand pet steadily through your hair while the other rubbed your back in firm, soothing motions—the way she knew turned your muscles to liquid.

"Shhh, I’ve got you," she murmured against your temple, smiling as you instinctively nuzzled closer. "Mommy’s right here. No thoughts, no worries—just my cuddle bug getting all the love he needs."

A little whine escaped you, and she squeezed tighter, rocking slightly just to hear you sigh.

Because this?

This was her favorite part of the day.

The first gray light of dawn crept through the blinds as Lila blinked awake to the sound of soft whimpers.

She turned her head—and there you were.

Her big, strong man—the one with calloused hands and a beard rough enough to scratch paint off wood—trembling beneath the sheets like a frightened child. Your brow furrowed, lips moving around silent pleas as your fingers twisted desperately in the blankets.

Lila's heart clenched.

"Oh, baby..." She was moving before she'd fully processed being awake, her palm coming to cradle your heated cheek. The scratch of your beard against her fingers never failed to make her melt, but right now all she cared about was the way you instinctively leaned into her touch, even in sleep.

A particularly sharp whine tore from your throat, and she didn't hesitate—hauling your head onto her chest with a firm hand, letting you nuzzle into the soft swell of her breasts as her other arm banded tight around your ribs.

"That's it," she whispered against your hairline, rocking gently. Your nightmare-twisted fingers found purchase in her nightgown, fisting the fabric like a lifeline. "Hold onto me, angel. I won't let go."

The trembling worsened for one heartbreaking moment—then you jerked awake with a gasped inhale, wild-eyed and disoriented.

Lila didn't give you time to be embarrassed.

"There's my good boy," she cooed immediately, tilting your chin up to press a firm kiss between your eyebrows. "You're safe, baby. Just bad dreams being mean to my sweetheart." Her thumb swiped at the dampness beneath your lashes. "Should I kiss them all away?"
