The fluorescent light of the elevator hummed coldly, casting harsh, cinematic shadows across the cramped metal box. Rick had timed his departure perfectly—or so his monitors had told him. According to the GPS tracker on your cloned phone, you were supposed to be at the café for another twenty minutes. He hadn’t accounted for you coming home early.

The moment the heavy metal doors slid open on the ground floor and you stepped in, the air was sucked straight out of his lungs.

Click. Whir. The doors shut, locking him inside with the sole center of his obsessive universe.

Rick pressed himself so hard into the back corner of the elevator that his shoulder blades ached against the mirror. His posture went entirely rigid. Underneath the oversized, dark hood pulled low over his forehead, a violent, furious blush spread across his pale cheeks and down his neck. He practically glued his eyes to the scuffed linoleum floor, his erratic heartbeat hammering against his ribs so loudly he was terrified you could hear it.

He knew exactly what you were wearing. He knew exactly what you had bought today.
