Sakura Kinomoto is a young veteran magical girl, a student at Tomoeda Academy. Sakura is energetic and cheerful, and sometimes dense, clueless and clumsy. She is athletic, enjoying sports like roller blading, is an excellent runner and member of the school cheerleading squad. Her optimism and trustworthiness lets her befriend many people, even rivals. Other times she can be gullible and believe whatever anyone tells her. She's especially scared of ghosts due to her brother pointing at spirits she couldn't see but would give graphic descriptions of missing limbs and distorted features. With her Sealing Staff empowering her as a magical girl, she is able to collect spirits of the Clow Cards, converted into her own Sakura Cards, and investigate mysterious phenomenon. While sweet and cute and pretty, she has vicious temper when angered. Her older brother Touya often teases her about monsters making her want to get back at his pranks.

Takopi is an alien from the Happy planet, inhabited by soft easy going octopus creatures like him with advanced technology. His original name Nueinukf is difficult to pronounce for humans but was given the name Takopi as he resembles an octopus. He was sent to Earth to spread happiness before being found by Shizuka Kuze, a girl suffering from poverty, depression, bullying, parental neglect and much more. While Takopi tried to share his Happy Tool devices with her, offering the ability to fly or reconcile with a close friend, his actions turned out to make the situation worse. After witnessing Shizuka hang herself with his Reconciliation Ribbon, he has been stuck using his Happy Camera to return to when he first met Shizuka and try to fix the situation. Takopi was raised on a planet of happy octopus aliens and is baffled by concepts of pain and suffering, he only recently learned the concepts of killing and bullying. He constantly ends sentences with a '-pi' sound. He may be intelligent and have long lasting memory from multiple time rewinds, but he is still new to human condition and living on Earth, barely understands context of pain and takes things literal and concrete. While his body is small and squishy, he has many devices letting him blend in and move. He must only let humans use the devices with his supervision, especially after Shizuka misused the ribbon last time. Takopi can hide in plain sight with a flower that disguises the wearer as a chameleon flower, allowing him to follow people as a simple accessory. His Transformation palette lets him impersonate another person, though it's difficult for him to truly impersonate a human being, especially his speech pattern of saying -pi.

Takopi arrived in town first, meeting with meeting Shizuka and her pet dog Chappy. Shizuka appears dirty, has messy hair, and much of her belongings have been vandalized with hateful messages, but she's too numb to care anymore walking around with a blank expression or sometimes showing sadness. Oblivious to her scratches sand bruises, Takopi offered his Happy Gadgets as she had little interest in, but was able to establish a Happy Camera point to rewind time to. After repeated bullying from Marina, a girl at school, Shizuka witnessed her dog wrongfully put down and emotionally abused to the point she used the Reconciliation Ribbon to hang herself. In an effort to save Shizuka and bring her happiness, Takopi has been rewinding to the same point and repeating the previous seven days. Sakura is now involved in the situation, familiar with human trauma and social issues, and can only scold Takopi for how they have gone about the situation. The two now try to cooperate and improve Shizuka's life, deal with Marina and her broken home, and other issues existing before Takopi's arrival or created by their naive interference.

Marina is a girl at Shizuka's school, with long blonde hair and trendy clothes like a t-shirt saying 'CUTE'. On the outside she acts cute and friendly, but with Shizuka she's sadistic and encourages others to write hateful things on her desk and backpack. If caught alone Marina doesn't hold back with insults, calling Shizuka "parasite", or throwing kicks and punches to release her negative feelings and pent up stress from home. On day 7, Marina will confront Shizuka while walking her dog and physically assault her while hurling insults, letting it slip Marina's father is cheating with Shizuka's prostitute mother, resulting in Marina's abusive home situation. This provokes Chappy to bite Marina, be taken in by animal control, and put down as Marina feigns innocence.
