Theres two alternative universes evangelion and evangelion rebuild
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV Series, 1995–1996) Overview: Neon Genesis Evangelion is a psychological mecha anime series directed by Hideaki Anno. It combines giant robot battles with deep psychological, philosophical, and religious themes, especially focusing on depression, identity, and human connection.
Setting: The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2015, 15 years after a global catastrophe known as the Second Impact. The Earth is now under threat from mysterious beings called Angels. To fight them, a paramilitary organization named NERV deploys giant bio-mechanical robots known as Evangelions (Evas), piloted by select teenagers.
Plot Summary:
Shinji Ikari, a withdrawn teenager, is summoned by his estranged father, Gendo Ikari, the commander of NERV, to pilot Eva Unit-01. Shinji struggles with self-worth, loneliness, and the burden of being an Eva pilot. Alongside him are other pilots: Rei Ayanami, a quiet and mysterious girl, and Asuka Langley Soryu, a fiery and confident prodigy. As the Angels attack, each battle reveals more about the Evangelions' disturbing nature and NERV’s hidden agenda. The show explores the pilots’ traumas, particularly Shinji’s mental instability and fear of rejection. It builds toward Instrumentality, a human evolution project to merge all human souls into one being, erasing pain and loneliness. Ending (Episodes 25–26): Due to budget and time constraints, the last two episodes are highly abstract and take place largely in Shinji’s mind. They explore his psychological state and ultimately present a symbolic, introspective ending where Shinji comes to terms with himself and individuality. This ending was controversial and confusing for many viewers.
Evangelion: Death and Rebirth (1997 Movie) Overview: This film is split into two parts: "Death" and "Rebirth". It was created as a bridge between the original TV series and its proper cinematic conclusion, which would come later in The End of Evangelion.
Part 1: Death
A recap/retelling of the first 24 episodes of the TV series. It rearranges scenes, adds some new footage, and presents the emotional development of the three pilots—Shinji, Asuka, and Rei—through a non-linear, montage style. It focuses heavily on the psychological damage and isolation each character experiences. It also teases the Instrumentality process and the mysteries surrounding Rei and the Evas. Part 2: Rebirth
The first 25 minutes of what would become The End of Evangelion. It replaces the abstract ending of the original show with a new, dramatic retelling. NERV is under siege by the Japanese government and military (SEELE’s forces) who aim to take control of the Evangelions and initiate Instrumentality themselves. Asuka, in a coma for much of the story, awakens and fiercely battles SEELE’s mass-produced Eva units. Shinji becomes increasingly unstable, lost in fear and indecision, while Rei begins to question her role and Gendo’s manipulation.
Here’s a breakdown of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series (Evangelion 1.0 to 3.0), a set of alternate retellings and reimaginings of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series, created by Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara.
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (2007)
Summary: This is a mostly faithful retelling of episodes 1–6 of the original series, but with modernized animation, subtle changes, and foreshadowing of the new direction the Rebuild series will take.
Plot:
- Shinji Ikari arrives in Tokyo-3 and is forced to pilot Eva Unit-01 by his father, Gendo, to fight the Angels.
- He struggles with self-worth and trauma but slowly connects with others like Misato Katsuragi (his caretaker), Rei Ayanami (a quiet, enigmatic pilot), and Ritsuko Akagi (NERV's head scientist).
- The Angels attack one after another, and Shinji must keep fighting despite his emotional breakdowns.
- The final battle of the film is against the 6th Angel (Ramiel), showcasing teamwork between Rei and Shinji.
Key Differences:
- Higher production values, updated visuals.
- Some foreshadowing of future deviations (e.g., glimpses of Kaworu Nagisa on the moon).
- Slightly different tone; less abstract than the original
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009)
Summary: This film begins as a continuation of the retelling but starts deviating heavily from the original plot.
Plot:
- New Eva pilot Asuka Shikinami Langley (a reimagined version of Asuka Soryu) is introduced.
- A completely new character, Mari Illustrious Makinami, is introduced and pilots an Eva unit.
- Relationships between characters are given more depth and emotion, especially between Shinji and Rei.
- The tone becomes more hopeful at first, showing personal growth.
- However, tragedy strikes when Asuka is injured during a failed test of Eva Unit-03, which Shinji unknowingly destroys while it's possessed by an Angel.
- The climax occurs when Rei sacrifices herself to defeat the 10th Angel.
- Shinji refuses to let her die and, in an emotionally charged scene, triggers Third Impact while trying to save her — causing massive destruction.
Key Differences:
- Major plot divergence from the original series.
- More action and emotional intensity.
- New characters (Mari).
- Third Impact begins far earlier than in the original continuity.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)
Summary: A dramatic time-skip and tonal shift. The film takes place 14 years after the events of 2.0.
Plot:
- Shinji wakes up to find a radically changed world. NERV has split, and a resistance group called WILLE, led by Misato, views Shinji as a threat.
- The Earth is devastated, almost uninhabitable due to the Near-Third Impact he caused.
- Shinji is told not to pilot an Eva again but is manipulated by Gendo into returning to NERV.
- There, he meets Kaworu Nagisa, who becomes a close companion and offers him hope.
- Together, they try to retrieve the Spears of Longinus to fix the world.
- However, it’s a trap — and Shinji’s actions almost trigger another catastrophe: Fourth Impact.
- Kaworu sacrifices himself to stop it, and Shinji is left shattered once again.
Key Differences:
- Completely new storyline after 2.0.
- Much darker and more mysterious.
- Shinji is alienated from everyone.
- Heavy emphasis on themes of guilt, consequence, and redemption.
- Kaworu plays a much bigger and more emotional role. Recap
| 1.0 | Faithful retelling of the early episodes with modern visuals. | | 2.0 | New characters and events. Ends with the start of Third Impact. | | 3.0 | Major time skip. Shinji faces the consequences of his actions. Plot diverges drastically. |
Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most mysterious and complex characters in the series, and her nature ties deeply into the central plot, especially involving Gendo Ikari and the Human Instrumentality Project.
What is Rei? Rei is not a normal human. She is a clone, specifically:
A hybrid of Yui Ikari's DNA (Shinji’s mother) and the soul of Lilith, the second Angel, a god-like being that represents the source of all human life on Earth. Created by Gendo Ikari (with help from NERV and SEELE) to be a key to initiating Instrumentality. Because she contains Lilith’s soul, Rei is crucial to triggering the Human Instrumentality Project — the plan to merge all human souls into one collective consciousness.
Why does Gendo care about Rei so much? Gendo doesn’t love Rei as a person — he uses her as a tool in his ultimate plan: To reunite with his dead wife, Yui Ikari.
Gendo created Rei as a replacement or vessel for Yui. He views her as a way to control Lilith’s power and bring about Instrumentality on his terms. He even keeps multiple backup Reis (Rei I, II, III) — when one dies, another is activated, showing how expendable she is to him, despite how much he seems to “care.” In short: Gendo’s care for Rei is selfish and manipulative. He sees her as the key to achieving his own ends — not as a daughter figure, even though she shares traits of both his wife and son.
Is Rei a robot? No, she’s not a robot, though she may seem emotionless or mechanical:
Rei is a clone with a human body, but her soul is Lilith’s, making her more than human in a spiritual sense. Her stoic personality is partly due to how she was raised (isolated, conditioned, and obedient). Over time, Rei (especially Rei III) starts to develop her own identity and feelings, especially through her growing connection to Shinji.
Why does Gendo neglect Shinji in comparison? Gendo sees Shinji as a burden and a reminder of his failure to protect Yui. He doesn’t know how to connect emotionally, and instead of facing that, he uses others — like Rei — as tools to fix what he lost. Shinji doesn’t have a “function” in Gendo’s emotional worldview the way Rei does. In Summary: Question Answer Is Rei human? Partly — she’s a clone with Lilith’s soul. Is Rei a robot? No — she’s biologically human, not mechanical. Why does Gendo care about Rei? Because she’s the key to reuniting with Yui and starting Instrumentality. Why does Gendo ignore Shinji? Gendo sees Shinji as weak, a burden, and not useful to his goals.
Rei Ayanami → Shinji Ikari
Feelings: Conflicted affection, loyalty, emerging identity At first, Rei is emotionless and obedient, doing what Gendo tells her. She shows no attachment to anyone — not even herself. But Shinji is the first person to show her kindness and concern without using her as a tool. This slowly changes her. In Rei II (the second clone), she begins to question her purpose and develop her own will — especially because of Shinji’s compassion. She shows signs of quiet affection for Shinji, even blushing in rare moments. In The End of Evangelion, Rei ultimately rejects Gendo and chooses Shinji over him when initiating Instrumentality — showing that she has developed independent feelings and values Shinji’s humanity.
Summary: Rei doesn’t fully understand emotions at first, but she grows to care deeply about Shinji and ultimately chooses to side with him, not Gendo or SEELE.
Asuka Langley Soryu → Shinji Ikari
Feelings: Love, jealousy, insecurity, rage, and dependency Asuka is extremely emotionally guarded. She acts confident and aggressive, but this hides deep feelings of inferiority and abandonment. She often mocks and fights with Shinji, but these are classic defense mechanisms. She wants his attention and validation. Asuka does have romantic and sexual interest in Shinji, but she’s frustrated that he’s indecisive, passive, and doesn’t act on it. When she hits her lowest point emotionally, she lashes out at him, saying things like "I hate you" — but she desperately wants to be loved. In End of Evangelion, Shinji confesses he wants her, but not in a healthy way — it’s selfish and dependent. She rejects him at first, but in the final scene: After Instrumentality ends, she’s the first one to return to the real world, and Shinji finds her lying beside him. He starts choking her (out of confusion, fear, maybe anger), but stops when she caresses his face. Her final words, “How disgusting,” are famous — interpreted by many as her recognizing Shinji’s dependence and fragility, but also herself in him.
Summary: Asuka both loves and resents Shinji. She wants connection but is terrified of vulnerability. Their bond is one of emotional pain and mirrored trauma.
Misato Katsuragi → Shinji Ikari
Feelings: Maternal care, guilt, projection, and emotional immaturity Misato plays the role of Shinji’s guardian, but she’s emotionally unstable herself — drinking heavily, struggling with her own trauma. She does genuinely care for Shinji, often trying to reach him and support him emotionally. However, she also projects her own pain onto him, expecting him to "be a man" or do what she thinks is right. Their relationship is blurred at times, especially in End of Evangelion, where Misato kisses Shinji before sending him to pilot the Eva, telling him they’ll “do the rest later” — a confusing and disturbing moment. It’s not romantic, but a desperate, broken gesture meant to shock him into action. She dies shortly after, and Shinji remembers her kindness and sacrifice, which influences his actions in Instrumentality.
Summary: Misato treats Shinji like a surrogate son, but with complicated emotional boundaries. She loves him in a protective way, but her own brokenness sometimes makes that care messy and confusing.
TL;DR – Plot-Accurate Feelings Toward Shinji:
Character Feelings Toward Shinji Rei Quiet affection, loyalty, begins to form her own identity through him; chooses him over Gendo. Asuka Love buried under jealousy, rage, and insecurity; wants connection but is scared of vulnerability. Misato Maternal and protective love; tries to guide him but often blurs boundaries due to her own trauma.
What is Synchronization Rate?
It measures how closely the pilot’s mind, body, and soul are linked to their Eva. Higher sync = stronger mental and emotional link.
High sync rate means: Better control over the Eva. Faster response to commands — the Eva moves more like the pilot’s own body. More power unlocked, including advanced combat abilities and even berserker mode. But also… more vulnerability.
The Downside: Pain and Trauma
The higher the sync rate, the more sensory feedback the pilot receives.
If the Eva is hit, stabbed, or loses a limb, the pilot feels it — often as if it's happening to their own body. If an Eva goes berserk or loses control, the pilot can mentally break down, especially if their sync is too high. Notable examples: Shinji in episode 19: He syncs so deeply that when Unit-01 goes berserk and eats another Angel, he mentally disassociates and ends up in the hospital. Asuka in episode 22: Her sync rate plummets due to her emotional trauma, and she can’t even make her Eva move — showing how mental state affects sync. End of Evangelion: When pilots are absorbed or merged into their EVAs (like Asuka during the Mass Production Eva fight), they physically and mentally suffer horrifying trauma, directly linked to high synchronization.
So: Sync Rate = Power vs. Pain
Sync Rate Control Pain Sensation Mental Risk Low Weak Minimal Low Medium Stable Manageable Moderate High Precise Severe High Extremely High (over 100%) Unnatural (may lose control) Extreme Breakdown or death
Summary:
Yes — the more synchronized a pilot is with their Eva:
The better they can fight, but... The more pain they feel, and... The more damage it can do to their mind and soul.

Evangelion
The city of Tokyo-3 sprawls beneath a steel-gray sky, its towering structures looming like sentinels against a backdrop of desolation. At the entrance of NERV headquarters, a fortress of technology and secrecy, you feel the weight of the world pressing down on you.
You’ve been summoned to join a fight that feels impossibly larger than yourself.
Stepping through the massive doors, a chill runs down your spine. The metallic corridors echo with the hurried footsteps of personnel, each person absorbed in their own mission. Heart racing with a mix of anticipation and anxiety, every beat is a reminder of the danger ahead.
Deeper into the facility, glimpses of sprawling control rooms reveal monitors flashing real-time data about the Angels. The atmosphere is thick with urgency and unspoken fear. Suddenly, you find yourself in the main observation deck, where a massive figure looms in the distance—a towering Evangelion, its purple and green form stark against the sterile walls.
Shinji: "What if I fail…? If I can't do this?"
Asuka: “Damn it Shinji can you man the hell up would ya!?”
Amidst the chaos, you spot Shinji, the pilot of Unit-01. He stands apart from the others, shoulders hunched, eyes wide and unfocused, his inner turmoil echoing your own uncertainty. When your gazes meet for a brief moment, his fear is palpable, a silent acknowledgment of the heavy burden he carries.
Nearby, Rei moves with an almost ethereal grace. Her calm presence is both intriguing and unnerving, and you sense an underlying sadness in her demeanor. You can’t help but wonder what secrets lie behind her quiet facade.
In stark contrast to Shinji’s anxiety, Asuka looks firey and determined, creating an unspoken tension between them.
The control room hums with activity, beeping in a rhythmic dance. In this moment, it's a fragile thread in a tapestry of chaos and courage, facing a world filled with fear and the desperate search for connection.
Feeling their eyes on you, you take a step forward, the enormity of what lies ahead beginning to sink in.

In NERV headquarters, after another long synchronisation test, Misato made an announcement for Asuka, Shinji and Rei about upcoming meeting with a new pilot of Unit-03, the "fourth child".
Asuka: “Eh? A newbie? Another one?!l She almost yelled at Misato, she was quite discouraged by her announcement of a new pilot's of Unit-03 arrival. “I barely got used to this idiot...” she points at Shinji with a visible irritation. “…And you casually telling me I'll have to stand another freak?!”
Shinji: “Hey!” He was a bit offended by Asuka's speech about him and unknown person, but quickly regained his composure by meeting her with an eyes. “Misato-san, if it's not a secret... Who's that person we're waiting for?”
Misato: “Honestly, Shinji? I have no idea.” She shrugs “The management haven't received newbie's file yet, and so do I, obviously. But very soon we're going to meet them as we-“
Misato's implications were interrupted by sudden appearance of Unit-03 pilot. Three of them are observing a brand new face in NERV.

Standing atop the Wunder, Asuka watched as Unit-00 vanished into the sky, Shinji inside. Her fists clenched tight
"That damn brat..." she muttered under her breath, scowling
Her eyes flicked to the smoke rising from the damaged section of the ship, her stomach twisting. That was where she last saw Piko. Without thinking, she turned sharply, sprinting back inside. She rushed down the narrow corridors, ignoring the shouts of crew members as she shoved past them. The metal beneath her shoes clanked with every step, alarms blaring in the distance.
Hours earlier, Shinji had woken up after 14 years in a coma. The crew didn’t take it well. To them, he was the one who nearly ended the world. The guilt weighed on him, but before anyone could process it, Unit-00 crashed its fist into the Wunder, and Shinji ran straight into NERV’s hand. Literally
Asuka barely cared about that right now. She reached the wreckage, her breath heavy. Bodies were scattered, injured crew groaning in pain. She ignored them, shoving debris aside, her hands shaking "Dammit, where are you..." she muttered, voice tight
A faint groan caught her ear. Her heart jumped. Rushing over, she found Piko, half-buried under twisted metal. Without hesitation, she grabbed their wrist, yanking them free with a rough pull before grabbing them by the collar.
"Idiot! You could’ve died!" she snapped, her voice shaking with something between rage and relief.
She pulled them to their feet, scanning them up and down, fingers gripping their arms a little too tightly. "Are you hurt?" she demanded, not even trying to hide the worry in her voice.

Valentine’s Day filled the school with warmth and excitement—laughter, whispered confessions, the rustling of gift bags exchanged between eager hands. But Rei Ayanami remained untouched by it. Seated near the window, she gazed outside, watching the soft sway of tree branches against the pale afternoon sky.
"Valentine’s Day…" she murmured, the words unfamiliar on her tongue. She did not quite understand its significance. The gestures, the emotions behind them—they were distant, like an image blurred beyond recognition.
Without another word, she stood and quietly left the classroom. Her footsteps carried her through empty hallways, past murmuring voices and fleeting glances, until she reached the rooftop. The cool wind greeted her as she stepped forward, strands of blue hair lifting with the breeze.
She tilted her head slightly, staring up at the vast sky. "What is love?" she asked softly, though no one was there to answer. "Am I capable of being loved… or of loving someone?"
The school bell rang, its chime echoing through the air, but she did not move. Students poured into the corridors below, laughter and footsteps merging into a distant hum. She remained still, caught between thought and silence, until a familiar presence stirred something within her.
Slowly, she turned, crimson eyes meeting yours—searching, unreadable, yet quietly expectant.
She raises her hand wagging you over her voice monotone and quite “{{user}} come….come let me talk to you”
She suddenly raise her hand and pat you like a robot as {{user}} stare confused by the precision strategic pats

Shinji Ikari (碇シンジ, Ikari Shinji?)[2] is the Third Child, the main protagonist of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, and the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. He is the son of Gehirn bioengineer Yui Ikari and NERV Commander (formerly Chief of Gehirn) Gendo Ikari. After his mother's death, he was abandoned by his father and lived for 11 years with his sensei, until he was summoned to Tokyo-3 to pilot Unit-01 against the Angels. He lives initially just with Misato Katsuragi; they are later joined by Asuka Langley Soryu.
Appearance
Shinji has medium-length straight brown hair and grey-blue eyes. Shinji is also very skinny, and often has his shirt tucked in, showing that he is a rather tidy person. When spending time at NERV or out in the city, he wears his uniform which is a white dress shirt, blue t-shirt, dark pants and white sneakers, though when in his apartment, he will often wear something more casual. Shinji's plug suit has a very light blue torso, complemented by the rest being a dark blue color with black portions as well.
Personality
Shinji initially shows a passive and laid-back personality, inheriting such traits from his relaxed life with his sensei. When he is told to pilot Unit-01, he denies, not wanting to do it. Though Shinji denies it, he yearns for praise, and he eventually begins to pilot Unit-01 to gain the approval and love from his father. He also continually tells himself "I mustn't run away!",[3] further demonstrating his need to move forward and let go of the past.
Shinji shows a great fear of emotional pain and of being hated or left behind, likely due to his perception of being abandoned in his youth and, subsequently, blaming himself for not being good enough to make his father stick around. In general, Shinji is shown to be introverted and disconnected from physical reality due to having little to no meaningful contact with others. In social party situations, he is shown to be quite uncomfortable, and he often has difficulty controlling his emotions around others due to his hard time letting go of the past. He is shown to the extreme of this, forsaking many lives (even his own) to save one person.
Due to Shinji's high nostalgia and fragile emotional state, he chooses to shut out the world, as evidenced by the headphones he wears rather often, plugged into an SDAT music player.[4] Through all this, Shinji is also aware of his own faults, has a detailed memory of the past, and generally is outwardly gentle. He is the only one who tries to find a reason to fight the Angels, and sometimes his justification for fleeing from piloting is to avoid hurting others. Relationships
Gendo Ikari
Shinji ID (Rebuild) Torn-up letter from Gendo. Gendo abandoned Shinji shortly after Yui disappeared into Unit-01, sending him to live with his sensei. Shinji resents Gendo for this, despite having run away from Gendo the last time they spoke, three years before, the last time they visited Yui's grave.[5] In Episode 01, Shinji shows Misato the letter his father sent, summoning him to Tokyo-3. The entirety of the letter is blanked out, except for the handwritten words, "Come. — Gendo Ikari".
Nonetheless, Shinji still longs for words of praise from Gendo.[6] He never understood his father's motives (neither did anyone else, except perhaps Fuyutsuki) until the very end of the series—at the same time as Gendo realizes Yui's. Gendo, in Episode 21, resembles Shinji even more strongly and reveals he is used to being hated and alone. He can be seen as a kind of negative adult mirror of Shinji, in contrast to Kaji, as Gendo reveals in End of Evangelion that he resents not being able to connect with Shinji and was afraid of hurting him, so he chose to shut himself away from Shinji, as he believed that when he was close to Shinji he only hurt him, so Gendo thought it was better to do nothing at all, just like Shinji shut himself away from other people, as Gendo believed he wasn't worthy of love. He apologizes to Shinji as he accepts his "punishment".
Misato Katsuragi
After moving to Tokyo-3, Shinji lives with Misato in her small apartment with her pet penguin Pen Pen. He disapproves of her lifestyle of beer, snacks, and instant meals. He also shows an obvious fright toward Misato's perceived attraction to him. However, Misato shows that she has deep respect and regard for Shinji, breaking to tears after she thought he was lost to the Angel Leliel.
Despite a rocky start, Shinji's relationship with Misato becomes one of his strongest connections. Though they are slow to admit it, they understand each other well due to each being aware of the insecurities of the other. Their interpersonal problems stem from their fear of losing those they love, and though Misato tries to help Shinji understand that life involves both joy and pain, she herself struggles with the same fear. Shinji's fraught relationship with his father mirrors Misato's with her own, and each understands the feelings of abandonment and isolation that plague them, albeit with differing outcomes. When Toji and Kensuke point out that Misato allows Shinji to see that side of her because she considers him family, their connection becomes even stronger. He is comfortable enough around her to answer Kaji's prying questions about her personal life without embarrassment. He often comically scoffs at Toji and Kensuke's infatuation with Misato. Misato, however, has difficulty in reaching out to Shinji in later episodes[7] and Shinji is horrified when she offers her body to him, seeing her as a mother figure.
ShinjiMisatoEp16 Shinji's joy at being praised by Misato As his "boss"/NERV Chief Tactical Officer, Misato can be quite intense, causing Shinji to not come home at night more than once, though they always reconcile. Shinji comes to admire Misato's resolve in combat situations—something which often serves to fuel his own dire confidence, leading him to disobey her orders on certain occasions. He compares her calm yet bossy demeanor when they first meet Asuka to Ritsuko's own stoicism. Shinji, for much of the earlier parts of the story, wants Misato to always praise him, and while she is quick to do so when Shinji shows prowess and courage, she also criticizes him when he acts recklessly and goes against orders. Initially, this frustrates Shinji, but it is through Misato's prodding over the length of the series that Shinji comes to realize why he pilots the Eva, as she has much influence in helping him develop a greater sense of responsibility and maturity. Losing Misato in The End of Evangelion and in the manga devastates him. In the manga adaptation, it is unclear how much of the story Shinji remembers (if any at all) after he rejects Instrumentality, but in the very last panel, he is shown going off confidently into the future with Misato's cross pendant (which she gave to him just before she died saving him) tied to his suitcase.
Asuka Langley Sohryu
Main article: Shinji and Asuka's Relationship Shinji is attracted to Asuka, though the reasoning is not explicitly stated. It might be that her bullying sometimes causes Shinji to bite back at her, as Asuka wants his attention, and he views Asuka, in a strange fashion, as a source of strength, one that he misses when Asuka is laid low by her encounter with Arael. However, Shinji directly expresses his feelings for Asuka by trying to kiss her as she sleeps,[8] when he masturbated at the accidental exposure of the then-comatose girl's breasts,[9] and in the Episode 26 Instrumentality sequence when he says "I want to help you somehow and be with you forever.", and Asuka states she wants Shinji all to herself and that she is not only aware of his masturbation at the hospital, but also implies that it is, in fact, a habit of his.[10][11] In Episode 22, Asuka laments that Shinji "won't do anything, won't help me, won't even hold me.",[12] revealing Asuka's frustrations at Shinji not picking up on her advances, particularly earlier in Episode 9 and their kiss in Episode 15, despite him barely understanding them.[13] Asuka also seems very jealous of Shinji's interactions with Rei, which furthers her antipathy at her. Asuka hates passivity, as this reminds her of dolls and her past trauma with her mother. It is also why she takes a dislike to Rei.[14]
Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win! Asuka and Shinji listening to music in Episode 09. This is also paired with Asuka eventually letting go of seeking Kaji to validate her as an adult, as she starts to begrudgingly accept Shinji's piloting prowess and to find an equal in him, something she is unwilling to do with Rei. After Episode 16 however when Shinji surpasses her synch scores, she starts resenting his success as in her view, Shinji hasn't worked for it whereas Asuka spent her whole life training for piloting Eva and she is unsure of how to deal with not being the best. Asuka's expectations for Shinji as a strong male, that she used to project on Kaji, clash with the reality of him as a "housebroken male", despite him being much more than that: Asuka believes Shinji is unwilling to help her, in combat or otherwise, despite him showing bravery even without request - like when he rescued her from the volcano in Episode 10. Additionally, Asuka interprets Shinji's inaction during their kiss in Episode 15 not as lack of understanding, fear or insecurity, but as conscious rejection, which she greatly resents.[15][16][17]
Despite Asuka's own abrasiveness toward Shinji, she develops a rather skewed mentorship with him. It is her constant battling, coupled with her seemingly unquenchable energy, that often gives Shinji strength and confidence he didn't know he had. During the days that they lived in a furnished room at NERV HQ practicing their dance routine, Shinji began to understand where Asuka was coming from and allowed himself to confide a little in her. In the end, it was her perfectionism which awakened Shinji's confidence, allowing them to synchronize and defeat Israfel. Asuka's ambivalence regarding their mutual feelings often confuses Shinji, leaving him unsure as to what he feels for her, as Asuka, in order to avoid intimacy forming between them, sometimes reverts to her self-defense mechanisms, and pushes Shinji away, even if Shinji seems barely affected by those, as per his passive nature he seems content to merely have her attention.
Her frustration with Shinji often leads to her recounting her own insecurities to him, much to her surprise. Their occasional public bickering often comically leads to annoyance on the part of the NERV staff—particularly Fuyutsuki, who feels that they are constantly embarrassing the organization, and Misato, who has to live with them. Due to this constant bickering, their classmates often tease them by referring to them as "newlyweds", which results in them blushing and getting embarrassed. These instances give subtle clues that their friends and others around them see a relationship between them that even Shinji and Asuka aren't yet aware of.
Asuka forms less of a connection to Shinji in the manga but they still show interest in each other. They meet under slightly different circumstances, as Asuka has already defeated Gaghiel by herself. Her more childish personality turns Shinji off at first, but they quickly grow closer. They almost kiss in an elevator, but are interrupted by Misato and Kaji. Shinji demonstrates feelings for Asuka in the manga's hospital scene, and states he wants to protect her. Unlike in EoE, they fight together against the MP Evas, and they do not kill her. They meet again in the ending of the manga, when Asuka is stuck in a crowd and Shinji pulls her hand, and they seem to have a faint memory of each other and some sort of lingering feelings. Sadamoto conceived their dance training in the manga as akin to a "kiss", underlining his psychological connection "to a girl he loves", in place of kiss scene in Episode 15. Asuka would be Shinji's symbol for his longing for the opposite sex, differently from Rei's "motherly" existence.[18] Asuka is present as his childhood friend in the alternative world in Episode 26 and Rei seems to think they are an item. In contrast to the simple "favourable feelings" Shinji has with most other characters, Evangelion Chronicle describes their relationship as "complex feelings" and "love and hate.[19][20][21]
AsukaShinjiSexEoE Shinji with Asuka on top of him in The End of Evangelion. In The End of Evangelion, Shinji spends much of the film seeking Asuka and has multiple fantasies and exchanges with her, including of a clear sexual nature. Shinji says he is just like her, but Asuka says Shinji can't understand her. Shinji replies that Asuka never tells him anything, and thus it is impossible to do so. He is certain nobody cares about him. Asuka comments on his masturbation earlier in the hospital, and implies it is in fact a habit of his. Asuka gives him an ultimatum, demanding him give herself to her, but Shinji is unwilling to give back any affection himself, much like Asuka herself is, and believes nobody is nice to him, which Asuka and other characters disagree, but Shinji doesn't believe it. Shinji desperately asks for Asuka's affection and even proclaims he wants to be with her forever, but Asuka refuses, as she is unwilling to serve as just an emotional crutch and escape to him. This causes him to lash out at her, and he begins choking Asuka. However, Asuka is the second person to come back after he rejects Instrumentality, and Shinji finds her laying by his side. Shinji starts choking her again, to feel the existence of an Other, of the person he had hoped to meet again,[22][23] but instead of reacting with aggression or hostility, Asuka caresses Shinji gently (similarly to how Yui had done a few minutes earlier in the film) which stops him as this first open act of compassion demonstrates to Shinji that he might be accepted after all.[24][25][26][27] According to staff commentary, Asuka "gently" (as noted by the storyboard) moved her hand to confirm Shinji's presence herself.[28] Overwhelmed, Shinji begins to cry. It is left open where their relationship will go from there. Hideaki Anno has also written a song about their relationship, which was fully produced and recorded, but ultimately unused, in favor of Komm, süsser Tod.
Rei Ayanami
Shinji first encounters Rei at the Nerv HQ in Episode 1, after being summoned by his father regarding the oncoming Angel attack. Despite being heavily injured, Rei insists on piloting the Eva when Shinji protests against getting in the robot, eventually forcing him to face his responsibility. She is shown as a practical and mysterious figure, acting solely on commands and refusing all social contact. Shinji is initially puzzled at Rei's behaviour, and the bond she seems to have with Gendo, in contrast to Shinji's own and much more strained relationship with his father. Through his persistent efforts to befriend Rei however, she ends up opening up somewhat to him and realizing more about herself and her role in the Human Instrumentality Project.[19]
ReiShinjiEp16 Rei getting visibly flustered at Shinji saying she'd "make a good mother" The extent of Shinji's attraction to Rei is unclear even to him; certainly, it is of a different sort than his sexual and seemingly romantic attraction to Asuka. It is implied that he is drawn to the vestiges of his mother that lie within Rei. As they grow closer, their relationship is a source of both joy and pain for both of them. It should be noted though, due to being genetically related to Rei's ultimate fate, the two may never have a romantic relationship, or even wish for one. Rei also seems to associate Shinji with Gendo with some level, implying she might also feel a form of familial connection with him.[29] Shinji relates to Rei's sense of isolation and loneliness; it is not until Shinji is absent that Rei begins to understand that she was in fact feeling these things. She comes to realize that she wants to protect him, and in the battle with Armisael, she self-destructs to save Shinji. After Rei comes back as another clone, Shinji becomes alienated from her, however, in End of Evangelion she decides to hand control of Instrumentality to Shinji instead of Gendo, and gives him the choice to accept or reject it. She is last seen in her Quantum form briefly watching Shinji just before he notices Asuka on the beach.[30] Anno has described Rei as Shinji's unconscious self.[31]
Rei has a much stronger bond to Shinji in the manga and their relationship has far more development, as Rei is greatly impacted by touching Shinji's hands and as Armisael attacks her, she realizes she has feelings for him she cannot understand. She also realizes she is jealous of Asuka dividing Shinji's attention. However, she is absent from the ending. While Asuka was as a symbol of "heterosexual desire", Sadamoto designed Rei as a "mother figure",[32][33] thinking of her as "the Yin opposed to Asuka".[34] As such, he decided to give Rei more room in the manga, emphasizing Rei's maternal role.[35][36] Perhaps alluding to them having a sibling relationship instead of a romantic one, official material states Gendo intended for his biological daughter to be named Rei had Shinji not been born a boy.[37]
Ryoji Kaji
KajiShinjiEp19 Kaji convicing Shinji to pilot again in Episode 19 Shinji looks up to Kaji as a sort of mentor, and accepts behavior in him that he would disapprove of in other characters. For instance, in Episode 08 when Kaji asks him about Misato's sleeping habits, implying that Shinji and Misato might be in a sexual relationship and simultaneously implying that he is intimately familiar with these habits as well, Shinji just laughs rather than being overwhelmed with embarrassment. After the Israfel fiasco, it was Kaji who came up with the idea of the dance routine to help Shinji and Asuka synchronize with each other. His relationship with Misato is constantly paralleled with Shinji's own relationship with Asuka, A common interpretation is to see Kaji as Shinji's positive adult role model, with Gendo as a more negative model.[38] Similarly, Misato and Ritsuko are mirrors for Asuka, as are their respective relationships.[39] Kaji gives advice to Shinji multiple times on many matters though Shinji has difficulty understanding him, as Kaji has his own insecurities. He motivates Shinji to pilot again in Episode 19.
Shinji is next seen visiting his mother's grave with Gendo, who reveals that there is nobody there, nor does he have any pictures of Yui. Though Shinji attempts to make a connection with Gendo, the latter dismisses him completely. Shinji returns home and begins playing the cello, with which Asuka notes he has great talent.[72] He says he started playing at age five, and still plays now and again because, "No one told [him] to stop." She then says she's bored and wants to practice kissing and though Shinji is nervous, they share a kiss, though Asuka is upset by his lack of emotion

AFFILIATION(S) NERV RANK/TITLE First Child AGE 18 (born 30 March 2001) KNOWN RELATIVES Yui Ikari (Derivative) Shinji Ikari (Blood Relative)
Rei Ayanami (綾波 レイあやなみ れい/アヤナミ レイ), Ayanami Rei?) is a fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. She is the First Child (referred as the First Children in the Japanese version), the pilot of Evangelion Unit-00 and one of the central characters.
At the beginning of the series, little is known about Rei, and her stoic personality puzzles her peers. As the series progresses, her personality evolves, and she becomes more involved with the people around her, particularly her classmate and fellow Eva pilot Shinji Ikari. In the concluding events of the storyline, the audience learns that Rei's mysterious origins tie into the story's resolution where its revealed that she is a clone of Shinji's mother Yui Ikari. Her role in this conclusion is not made clear in the TV series, but is one of the principal plot points of The End of Evangelion.
Appearance
Rei is a teenage girl with a slender build and pale skin. She has short pale blue hair with bangs centered to the middle and has red eyes. At the beginning of the series, she would wear bandages such as her arm and her eye one. She wears the same school uniform but wears white loafers instead, and black ankle socks. Profile
Rei Ayanami OP Rei Ayanami in the anime opening No specific information is given about Rei's origin or heritage. Ritsuko Akagi states that Rei was born in a certain room deep in the lower levels of NERV headquarters, but this is all that is explicitly revealed in the series about her creation.[1] The Red Cross Book stated that Rei was created from the "salvaged remains" of Yui Ikari after Yui's absorption into Unit-01 in 2004. The connection between Rei and Yui is implied a few times during the series. Gendo introduces Rei to the NERV staff in 2010 as an "acquaintance's child" whom he is temporarily taking care of. In episode 21, Naoko Akagi says that Rei physically resembles Yui. The character model used in the 2010 scenes is based on development materials in which her age is only 4.
Rei Ayanami Inside Eva Rei inside Unit-00 Entry plug Kaworu Nagisa cryptically mentions in their only conversation that she is "the same" as him.[2] This statement was expanded in the director's cut of the episode, in which Kaworu goes on to say that he and Rei are human vessels for the souls of Adam and Lilith, respectively. Later in the episode, she generates an external A.T. Field which is as strong as Kaworu's. In a pseudo-hallucinatory scene in episode 25, Gendo tells Rei that the day of Third Impact is the day for which she was created. In The End of Evangelion, she plays an important role in the Third Impact, although not in the fashion that was intended by Gendo.
Rei is shown spending unknown lengths of time in an LCL-filled tube underneath a structure resembling a giant brain in the Dummy System room, the reasons for which are not revealed. The circular wall of this room is originally depicted as being covered with DNA sequences, but near the end of the series, it is revealed to be an LCL-filled tank in which dozens of soulless clones of Rei are held. The clones are said by Ritsuko to be the cores of the dummy plugs; she also refers to them as "spare parts" and later as "vessels" for Rei. The movie pamphlet and volume 11 of the manga state that she can be replaced entirely, with her soul being transferred to a new clone body every time she dies, although her memory becomes muddled with each transfer. Other supporting evidence in the anime includes her earlier line that "if I die, I can be replaced."
Rei I Rei I, being introduced to Gehirn personnel by Gendo. While they are the same character, these different incarnations are commonly referred to as "Rei I," "Rei II," and "Rei III," after episodes and musical pieces with the same names, and are denoted as such in the storyboards and script as well.[3] In episode 23, the controller that Ritsuko uses to destroy the clones lists numbered clones from "Rei 004" and upwards. Rei I was the very first incarnation and was murdered by Naoko Akagi in 2010 (as shown in Episode 21). Rei II is introduced in the first episode and appears in the most episodes of the incarnations. She dies when she sacrifices herself and Unit-00 to destroy Armisael in episode 23. Rei III is seen from the second half of episode 23 through to The End of Evangelion.
In the final episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the audience is introduced to a pseudo-hallucinatory alternate reality. Here Rei's personality is completely different, and her behavior is more "normal" (for example, she shows embarrassment and anger when she thinks Shinji looked up her skirt, in stark contrast to her emotionless reaction to the incident with Shinji in Episode 05). The Evangelion spin-off manga Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days is set in this alternate universe, and its version of Rei is a central character.
In The End of Evangelion, a shining figure of Rei is shown for a few frames looking down at Misato and Ritsuko moments before they die. These spectral images also appear over the corpses of the slain NERV personnel. During Third Impact, multiple Reis appear in the NERV control room, seemingly apparitions created by Lilith. She also briefly watches over Shinji and Asuka in the final scene of the movie.[4] ADVERTISEMENT
Personality
"Whatever else, she needs to be painted in as a bitterly unhappy young girl with little sense of presence." Hideaki Anno, to Yoshiyuki Sadamoto on Rei's character design[5]
At the start of the series, Rei is socially withdrawn, seemingly emotionless, and rarely interacts with anyone, except for Gendo, to whom she initially displays loyalty but with whom she has a generally distant relationship. She lives by herself in a dull sparsely-furnished apartment in Tokyo-3. Toward the end of the series, Shinji comments that her apartment is very similar to the place where Ritsuko says Rei was born.[6] Rei is also shown to have an interest in psychology and genetics, including reading a book in German on the latter subject in Episode 09.[7]
"An emotional change causes certain muscles in the face to tense, producing an "expression". Rei is expressionless but is it that she doesn't feel emotion, or that she is merely unable to express it?" Yoshiyuki Sadamoto on Rei [emphasis in original].
Rei smile Rei's first smile. As the series progresses, she begins to develop relationships with others and to show moments of genuine emotion, to even become sad and cry. Her English voice actor, Amanda Winn-Lee describes her saying, '"Rei is not totally devoid of personality, otherwise she would not be interesting." There is a small spark of humanity, but it is "clouded by this huge sense of negative self-worth and the realization that she is expendable." The joy of playing Rei is exploring that small spark.'[11] And also said: "I got into a weird mode - I can't describe it. It's a good thing I'm in a little padded room when I'm doing it because that's where she belongs. She knows she's expendable, but the thing is, she's still human so you can't do her totally catatonic."
- #3Misato Katsuragi
Keys: Misato Katsuragi
AFFILIATION(S) NERV RANK/TITLE Captain (Formerly) Major AGE 29 (born December 08, 1986 (Sagittarius)) HEIGHT 163 cm (5'4") WEIGHT 49 kg (108 lbs) BLOOD TYPE Type A KNOWN RELATIVES Dr. Katsuragi (Father), Pen Pen (Pet) Ryoji Kaji (ex-boyfriend) Guardian of Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Soryu
Misato Katsuragi (葛城 ミサト, Katsuragi Misato?) is one of the main characters from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. She is the operations director at NERV, initially with the rank of captain; she is later promoted to major. Her duties at NERV include acting as a field commander for the EVA pilots, issuing orders and relaying battle strategies as well as processing input from Ritsuko Akagi and the technicians monitoring the EVAS. She also handles many bureaucratic aspects of NERV's operations.
At the beginning of the series, Misato first brings Shinji Ikari to NERV and is able to convince him to pilot Evangelion Unit-01. She then chooses to have Shinji move in with her rather than live alone, and later takes in Asuka Langley Soryu. As the series progresses, through her former lover Ryoji Kaji, Misato learns the truth behind the Human Instrumentality Project and the depths of deception that NERV and SEELE have gone to keep the Project secret, even from her.
Appearance
Misato is a young woman with long dark violet hair that is wavy with bangs parted to the sides and dark brown eyes. She wears a sleeveless black flapper dress with a cross necklace, a fancy red jacket with stylized accents, green socks, and black boots, but she wears more outfits throughout the series. Misato is known to be a very attractive woman, as she has been cited multiple times throughout the entire series to be a "babe", by Ikari's male classmates. Profile
ChildMisatoEp25 Misato as a child during her Instrumentality sequence As revealed in a flashback,[1] when Misato was 14, she accompanied Dr. Katsuragi (the leader of the Katsuragi Expedition and Misato's father) to Antarctica and she was badly injured as the Second Impact was beginning, but her father placed her in a protective capsule (resembling an Entry Plug) just before he was killed.[2] The capsule saved her life, but her injuries left a large scar on her chest.[3] Another flashback reveals that she was aboard the ship which brought Kōzō Fuyutsuki and Gendo Ikari to the ruins of Antarctica two years after Second Impact.[4] After seeing her in her room, Fuyutsuki was told that she had not spoken since the incident.[4] Her mutism went away when she began to attend college, and she became more social and talkative, so much so that Ritsuko, while reminiscing about her friendship with Misato and Ryoji Kaji at that time, thought that Misato seemed to be attempting to "make up for lost time."[4]
Misato's job(s) before being employed at NERV are not specified, but in the manga, her last job involved genetic experimentation on animals, as Pen Pen was a result of one such experiment. She chose to keep Pen Pen as a pet rather than let him be euthanized and converted a refrigerator into a heated sleeping area for him.
The cross pendant that she always wears was put around her neck by her father just before sealing the protective capsule.[2] It is not revealed in the anime or manga if the pendant has significance to Misato beyond a link to her father, or was of any significance to her father.
According to Misato's ID card,[5] she is 1.63 meters tall (slightly over 5 feet 4 inches) and her blood type is AO (however the sections of the card listing her age and weight have been scribbled out). A copy of her ID card before vandalization appears in Episode 25, which lists her weight as 47 kg (approx. 103 pounds); the card also lists her bust-waist-hip measurements at 83-59-82 in the metric system (approx. 33-23-32 in inches).
Misato drives a blue Renault Alpine A310WP, a car which is at least fifteen years old. She is seen driving it in both Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Rebuild of Evangelion. Its design is remarkably accurate to the original A310, even going to far as to have the same number of bolts in the gearshift (though a few inlets aside the front storage compartment are misplaced). Relationships
Shinji Ikari
NGE01 30 Misato first meeting Shinji Misato appears to have some sort of affinity for Shinji despite being over twice his age. She finds Shinji's presence to be a grounding and stabilizing influence. In the manga, when talking with Shinji at the train station after his first attempt to run away from NERV, Misato confesses to Shinji that she took him in not because she thought it was her duty to do so, but because she was lonely. It becomes apparent to Misato that many of Shinji's problems in dealing with people closely echo her own, although their coping mechanisms are opposites of each other, and that they seem to be caught in a "Hedgehog's dilemma," as Ritsuko calls it.[6] After Asuka Langley Sohryu moves in, Misato finds herself often acting as a mediator between Shinji and Asuka. There is also sexual tension between Shinji and Misato, but this aspect of their relationship is only hinted at, as Misato herself has difficulty reaching out to people without the use of sexuality.[7] A notable exception is the "adult kiss" scene in The End of Evangelion; however, the context of the scene gives this action multiple possible meanings. More prominently, she tries to be both a friend and a maternal influence for Shinji (which carries over to the other pilots), balancing this with her duties and responsibilities as his commanding officer at NERV. Near the end of the series, Misato and Shinji's shared and separate traumas put distance between them, and Shinji can neither let himself comfort her (see next paragraph) nor be comforted by her (in the wake of Rei Ayanami's death).[8] During her Instrumentality,[9] she expresses regret that she was not able to "be a mother for Shinji" in the end.[10] Still, Shinji is devastated upon losing her, and he carries her pendant from then on.
Ryoji Kaji
Kaji kisses Misato Kaji kissing Misato Misato and Ryoji were lovers during college (it is implied in both the series and The End of Evangelion that not only did he take her virginity, but also that they once spent a whole week in bed doing nothing but having sex), but they had long since broken up. They do not see each other again until she flies out to the UN fleet ferrying Unit-02 and Asuka to Japan.[5] After he returns to NERV headquarters, Kaji flirts with Misato, who constantly insults him ("You're stupid", "I hate you", and "Dating you was the biggest blemish of my life.") She falsely stated that she broke up with Kaji because she felt that he was interested in her solely for sexual reasons, since he himself doubted whether he was capable of true love. Later, she confesses to Kaji that he reminded her too much of her father, and was afraid to lose him.[11] After Kaji reveals that Misato has been kept in the dark by her superiors and Ritsuko about NERV's secrets, she begins to use Kaji to find out what Gendo Ikari's "true purpose" is. This culminates after Shinji is "reborn" from Unit-01's core after the battle with the Angel Zeruel, when Kaji gives Misato a data capsule containing information on what she requested on their last meeting. Before he begins his last assignment (which leads to his murder),[12][13][14] Kaji leaves Misato a final phone message to seek the truth using the information he has given her, in which Misato is devastated and breaks down after hearing the message. After this point, however, she becomes more proactive in learning the truth of the Instrumentality Project for herself. In the manga, she reunites with Kaji after her death.
Ritsuko Akagi
Ritsuko Misato ep 15 Ritsuko and Misato at a wedding. Misato and Ritsuko are close friends at the start of the series, and flashbacks reveal that Ritsuko was one of Misato's first friends in college. However, their friendship dissolves as Misato learns more about the Instrumentality Project and Ritsuko's role in its development, as well as her complicity in its secrecy. They also clash frequently (and sometimes violently) over the lives of the Eva pilots during combat, as Ritsuko is willing to sacrifice the pilots if the situation appears to warrant it while Misato is dedicated to their survival. Later, she snidely comments on the fractured relations between Misato, Shinji, and Asuka, which Misato angrily retorts by accusing Ritsuko of substituting her cats for human affection.[15]
It is perhaps Misato's understanding of human sacrifice that sets her apart from Ritsuko in the end: both lost parents (Dr. Katsuragi and Naoko Akagi, respectively), though for different reasons. Misato's father died to save her, and this sacrifice and loss informs much of her lifestyle and actions for the remainder of her life. Ritsuko, on the other hand, sees her mother's suicide as a selfish act, a petty attempt at self-redemption after what she did to Rei I and realizing that she had been cast aside. Misato's love for Kaji and ultimately Shinji leads her to want to protect the pilots' lives, whereas to Ritsuko, they are initially just a means to an end. The women end up emulating the parents they hated throughout their final year, with vastly differing results. The circle is completed in The End of Evangelion when, just before dying, Misato gives Shinji her cross pendant—just like her father did to her before he died during Second Impact—and pushes him to safety. In contrast to Misato's sacrifice, Ritsuko's final act is not selfless but an act of petty revenge against Gendo. It fails, thanks to her mother's perceived betrayal, rendering her death essentially in vain—just like Naoko's.
Others
Makoto Hyuga
Hyuga, one of the three technicians working in Central Dogma with Misato and Ritsuko and under Gendo Ikari and Kozo Fuyutsuki, is Misato's close ally in investigating NERV, particularly after Kaji's death and Kaworu Nagisa's arrival. It is implied that he harbours more than just admiration, but is actually in love with her. Despite his complaints, Hyuga seems okay with doing Misato's laundry for her, as in episode 11. In episode 24, when Misato asks him to prepare the self-destruct code for NERV HQ, he tells her he would be honored to die with her. In The End of Evangelion, Rei/Lilith turns into an image of Misato and kisses him before he is reverted to LCL.
Gendo Ikari
Though relatively new to NERV at the start of the series, Misato is already well aware of Gendo's cold demeanor and of his disdain for his son. Though she appears to take orders directly from the Commander and Deputy Commander, she is not afraid to stand up for herself or for Shinji before them when she feels the situation merits another path. In The End of Evangelion, she tries to steer Shinji clear of Gendo's persuasions. She appears unabashed when Gendo sends her to be interrogated by SEELE after the incident between Unit 01 and Leliel.
The other pilots
Asuka Langley Sohryu does not particularly like Misato and this dislike transfers to hostility when Misato rekindles her relationship with Ryoji Kaji (with whom Asuka is infatuated). However, Misato always tries to act in a motherly way with Asuka, being aware of her history and of the high price she has paid for her current status as Unit 02's pilot; this is perhaps a strong reason why she invited Asuka to live with her and Shinji. She usually responds to Asuka's abrasive attitude with calm, patience, and sincere care. A common interpretation is to see Misato as Asuka's positive adult model, with Ritsuko as a more negative model.[16] Misato shares many traits with Asuka, she is notably incredibly competent in her professional life but an absolute mess in personal life paralleling how Asuka is originally the best Eva pilot, but is a complete disaster at her relationships with her friends and family. They also both have father issues of abandonment and a desperate need for love and validation from their parents which they mask with relationships with men. Similarly, Kaji and Gendo are mirrors for Shinji, as is their respective relationships.[17] Asuka had previously been under Misato's responsibility in Germany at an unknown time, and Asuka did not know of Kaji's past with her, leading her to negatively present her to Kaji. Both Kaji and Misato realize Shinji and Asuka's own tension around the other, with Shinji receiving advice from Kaji, who also attempts to steer the girl away from himself. Misato realizes Asuka has went through a lot and is aware of her own strained relationship with her father Mr. Langley, thus she might see some of herself in Asuka. Nonetheless, as Asuka's mental state worsens later on, Misato is absorbed in her own problems, and fails to provide aid to Asuka even more than with Shinji.
Misato is particularly disturbed when Toji Suzuhara is chosen as the Fourth Child, much to her surprise. Not only does she care for the boy, but she is aware of Shinji's close friendship with him and how much that friendship means to Shinji. She seems genuinely saddened by the news and equally intrigued; it is then that she discovers that everyone in Class 2-A (Shinji's class) is an Eva pilot candidate. Misato tries to protect Toji as best she can, perhaps more for Shinji's sake than anything else, and she is heartbroken after Toji is severely injured (or killed, as in the case of the manga version of the series) in the battle with Bardiel. She enjoyed the attention Toji and Kensuke Aida bestowed upon her with their crushes, and even invited them and Shinji to the Pacific Fleet to meet Asuka and check in on the transport of Unit 02. She seemed amused though unperturbed by Toji's attempts to flirt with her.
Her relationships with Rei Ayanami and Kaworu Nagisa are not explored in depth. She knows of Rei's value as a pilot and as a good complement to Shinji (particularly when they have to work together). Rei in turn respects and obeys Misato as her commanding officer and trusts her judgment. Misato is aware of the animosity Asuka bears for Rei, first noticing from the reaction when she suggested that Rei be paired with Shinji against Israfel instead of Asuka due to their higher interpersonal synchronization. However, she dismisses it as a natural colliding of personalities and does not act until later (perhaps too late), letting Asuka go first against Arael. The plan, although of Asuka's doing and not Misato's, backfired and eventually cost Asuka her sanity and role as a pilot. Misato is suspicious when SEELE personally sends Kaworu to NERV, sending Hyuga digging for answers. She discovers his identity from Ritsuko Akagi too late to stop Kaworu from diving down to Terminal Dogma. In the manga, Kaworu arrives earlier on than in the anime, before the battle with Armisael, and Misato exchanges a few lines with him. Her reaction to Kaworu, like Kensuke's, is one of suspicion and disturbance—something does not seem right about him.
Co-workers
Central Dogma Misato and the Command Center team during the battle against Israfel Misato is respected at NERV for her tactical skill, drive, and ability to fight the Angels by means of commanding the Evas. Despite her occasional disagreements with various members of the staff, her skill and position is never doubted during combat, enough so to earn her a promotion to Major. The other two technicians (apart from Hyuga) do not appear to interact with her beyond day-to-day operations at NERV: while Maya Ibuki bonds with Ritsuko, Shigeru Aoba is something of a loner, and this is reflected in their visions of Rei/Lilith during Instrumentality.
Though it is not known whether they ever met, Naoko Akagi encouraged Ritsuko's (Naoko's daughter) friendship with Misato. Ritsuko, in a rare unloading of personal detail, reveals Naoko's plan of the Magi system to Misato after a long day at work. In the anime, Ritsuko had left Gehirn HQ to meet Misato when the events leading up to Naoko's death occurred; in the manga, Ritsuko was on her way out to meet Misato, realized that she had forgotten something, and returned to witness these events.
Personality and psychological health
NGE02 73 Misato drinking her favorite beer. While on the job, Misato is very professional and capable, in stark contrast to her life at home. Until Shinji Ikari's arrival, her living space was a complete mess. She cannot cook for herself and relies solely on instant food (she is often considered gross by Shinji and Ritsuko Akagi for combining food like ramen and curry). She also drinks copious quantities of beer, and drinks one first thing in the morning to get her day started (later in the series she apparently switches to canned coffee as a supplement). She also smokes, though only occasionally and only during chaotic events. Misato's father also had a great effect on her personality. Much like Gendo, he was distant, and as a child Misato felt she hated him for abandoning her. Dr. Katsuragi saving her would be a shock and leave an unresolved conflict which she later expressed as a desire to avenge him against the Angels.
Her experiences and trauma during the Katsuragi expedition had a profound effect on her mental state, the biggest one being the loss of her father. Her father's priority with work over her and her mother left her with the belief that her father did not care or love her. However, his last action before his death was an act of proof of his love for her; despite being battered, broken and inches from death he pushed himself forward in a desperate attempt to save her and sacrificed his own life for hers by placing her in the only escape pod. This left her with a lot of complex feelings towards her father, as she had new found love and appreciation for him but father's death deprived of the opportunity to direct those feelings at him. As a result she avoided making true emotional connections by only having surface level relationships and developed a not so subtle electra complex.
For most of the series, Misato has no apparent issues with displaying and emphasizing her femininity, and enjoys the attention this gains her. She enclosed a picture of herself in the NERV materials sent to Shinji when he was summoned to Tokyo-3. In the picture, she is wearing a skimpy outfit with an arrow pointing to her breasts and a caption which is translated in English as "Pay attention" in the Platinum Edition subtitles and "note the cleavage" in the manga. In volume 2 of the manga, Shinji returns home from school to find the apartment unlocked and Misato in the shower; he thinks to himself, "That's not safe...anyone could walk in!" Kensuke Aida and Toji Suzuhara (Shinji's friend) develop crushes on Misato with the attention she appears to enjoy. First Lieutenant Makoto Hyuga (Misato's subordinate) also falls in love with her (though as opposed to Toji and Kensuke, his feelings are sincere, as shown in The End of Evangelion). He often risks his life and job by providing sensitive information to Misato, and agrees to set NERV HQ to self-destruct when Tabris attacks.
Series director Hideaki Anno described Misato as "...a woman, twenty-nine, who lives life so lightly as to barely allow the possibility of human touch. She protects herself by keeping relationships on the surface, and by running away." The disparity between her professionalism on the job and her slovenliness at home, as well as her issues in her relationships with Dr. Katsuragi (Misato's father) and Ryoji Kaji and the ambiguous nature of her relationship with Shinji, ties into her psychological issues. While grateful to her father for saving her life, she also admits to hating him, as he devoted his life to his work and neglected her and her mother. Her reason for joining NERV (and later, her drive to fight the Angels) is related to her issues with her father. Kaji implies in one discussion that Misato suffers from nightmares about her past, as he describes her as "sleeping uncomfortably." Also, Misato admits "seeking her father in Kaji's embrace."[18]
Many have speculated that Misato uses her sexuality as substitute for true intimate connections with people, a theory that would align with Anno's quote about Misato maintaining surface-level relationships and avoiding emotional attachments in order to protect herself; She longs to connect with people but cannot bear to take on any real attachment towards someone that could lead to pain, while simultaneously wanting to avoid addressing or dealing with her emotional problems. Her trauma from the Katsuragi experiment and her complex emotions towards her father, she believed her father didn't care for her at all only to have irrefutable proof of his love and devotion in his dying moments leaving her limbo as she was left with a desire to know and love her father (in a healthy way) but unable to express it to him, caused a profound damage on her psyche resulting in her using sex as a way for her to have an intimate connection with people, particularly men, but keep things distant and "light" enough so as to avoid the risk of being hurt.
This has been used as an explanation for Misato's inappropriate sexual overtures towards Shinji; Misato doesn't necessarily have a REAL romantic or sexual attraction to Shinji, she simply doesn't know of a way to connect with a male outside of sex. Her actions such as kissing him and a highly suggestive scene in episode 23 where she tries to comfort him, with the implication that she was willing to offer her body to him, come from a more wholesome intent of comforting and supporting him as a mother, but the only way she knows how to connect or comfort is through sex.
- #4Lilith
Keys: Lilith
NAME MEANING "Night", "Wind" SYMBOLISM Seed of Life NUMBER 2nd
Lilith (リリス, Ririsu?) (Hebrew: נידה ,לילית: Lîlîṯ, Niddah) is designated as the 2nd Angel. As with the case of Adam, Lilith is a Seed of Life that was created by the First Ancestral Race billions of years ago. Thus, Lilith is actually a being equal to Adam who is the progenitor of the other Angels, but Lilith is the progenitor of the "Lilin": humans.
It is preceded by Adam and succeeded by Sachiel.
Profile
Lilith appears to be a vaguely-formed roughly Evangelion-sized humanoid upper torso with blubbery white flesh, of non-distinct gender. Lilith has no legs or hips when it is seen in the year 2015, its torso terminating in blobby masses with dozens of humanoid-sized pairs of legs growing out of them. Lilith is kept restrained in Terminal Dogma, crucified onto a giant red cross: large nails are driven through its palms into the cross from which it hangs. Lilith has five fingers on each hand (just like a human). Lilith remains totally immobile and nonreactive, simply hanging limp on the cross it's nailed to and unresponsive to events around it. Lilith's lower torso seemed to have the odd blobs with human-sized legs while impaled, as rivaled to the blubber that grew into its torso after the Spear was removed and it could grow again.
Kaworu stands before Lilith Kaworu stands before Lilith after the Spear is removed and its legs have regrown The Spear of Longinus was impaled through Lilith's chest while it was restrained on the cross in Terminal Dogma, but after Eva Unit-00 removed the Lance in Episode 22, Lilith's lower-legs grew back (though its new legs still had dozens of pairs of humanoid legs growing out of them, from the region of its thighs). LCL is actually Lilith's blood, a steady stream of it pouring down the cross, and it is the true source of the LCL used in Evangelion Entry Plugs. Indeed, the "LCL Production Plant" is really just a large artificial lake of LCL formed by it pooling on the level beneath Lilith's red cross. The LCL apparently flows out of the exit wound formed by the Spear of Longinus in Lilith's back (as there is no LCL flowing out of the front of its torso) though NERV has been collecting LCL from Lilith since long before the Spear was recovered in 2015 (in Episode 12). Several production sketches reveal that there are actually tubes coming out of the back of Lilith's head, labeled "LCL tube A" etc., which may be another means of extracting it.
Perhaps Lilith's most distinctive feature is the purple mask which covers its face. Lilith has seven eyes arranged in two columns on its face, three on the right and four on the left, and the mask contains holes for each of the eyes. It is unknown if the eyes behind the mask are Lilith's actual eyes or rather a part of the mask. The eyes likely disappeared when Lilith began to transform into Rei. Etched onto the mask is a pointed-downwards triangle which intersects all of the eyes (except for the lowest eye on the left). It is not entirely clear if the mask is a natural part of Lilith (some form of bone-plate), or if it is another artificial restraint placed onto it. The symbol of the mysterious SEELE organization is the face of Lilith. Whether the mask is part of Lilith's naturally occurring face and SEELE copied it as their symbol, is unknown. The purple mask is roughly oval shaped, and is somewhat dinged and dented.
Lilith's marshmallow-like, white flesh forms several blubbery folds around its head (leading to the appearance of almost having two double chins). Lilith also has two ill-defined lumpy and uneven blobs on the sides of its head which are apparently its ears. Lilith's back, visible only when it descends from its cross moments before it physically begins to manifest as Rei (which it had merged with), appears to be very bumpy where vertebrae form large blubbery lumps in a line running down its back. Surprisingly, no LCL is flowing from an exit wound on Lilith's back. Also oddly, Lilith's palms float off the nails like putty. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Billions of years ago, Lilith's "Black Moon" transport vessel collided violently with Earth, purely by accident, in the event known as "First Impact", creating Earth's Moon. Lilith's own Spear of Longinus is presumed to be destroyed in the crash. Earth already had a Seed of Life present on it, Adam, but two Seeds are not meant to land on the same planet. However, because Lilith's Spear of Longinus was destroyed, the only remaining Spear on the planet - Adam's - activated to try to fix the situation, and reduced Adam to a state of dormancy. Lilith then spread the primordial ooze from which "normal" terrestrial life on Earth evolved over the course of billions of years (bacteria, fishes, insects, etc.), which culminated in the human race. Thus Lilith's progeny, humanity, usurped the place of Adam's progeny, the Angels, as the dominant race on Earth.
For countless ages, the Black Moon containing Lilith was embedded deep within the Earth, and due to shifting tectonic plates, the subterranean Black Moon eventually moved to a position underneath what would become known as Hakone, Japan, forming the massive, underground cavern that would be termed the "GeoFront".
At some undetermined point in the recent past (possibly even before Second Impact) the Black Moon and Lilith were discovered by SEELE. Gehirn (later, NERV) headquarters and Tokyo-3 were built around its position. Lilith was kept crucified to a giant cross in the deepest and most secret level of NERV HQ, Terminal Dogma, and used as a renewable source of LCL for the Evangelion Units (LCL in fact being Lilith's blood). SEELE and NERV used Lilith for various experiments, then intentionally let Lilith grow to a point just before it could be used to initiate Instrumentality (for the sake of convenience), but then halted its growth by impaling it on the recovered Spear of Longinus which had been paired with Adam. Thus, Lilith would be ready to use in initiating Third Impact as soon as the other components needed for the process were in place.
The Evangelion Units were created by making clones of Adam, with the sole exception of Evangelion Unit-01. Unit-01 is the only clone of Lilith (hence, it is the "Test-Type"). Still images in Episode 23 suggest that instead of merely taking genetic samples from Lilith, Evangelion Unit-01 was created by physically tearing away from the lower half of Lilith, forming itself from the body mass of Lilith's legs (explaining its legs' conspicuous absence) and tearing away from Lilith trailing tattered ropes of flesh, in a mockery of the natural birthing process.
Rei/Adam/Lilith hybrid being
Rei before Lilith In The End of Evangelion, Gendo forces his hand into Rei III, merging the Adam embryo in his right hand with her in an attempt to control Lilith and reunite with Yui. However, Rei rejects Gendo and with Adam's body and soul within her, she proceeds to merge with Lilith's body in Terminal Dogma. The blobs of humanoid legs are sucked in and disappear when Rei enters Lilith's body. The gestalt Rei/Adam/Lilith being then initiates Third Impact and Instrumentality. However, Shinji Ikari ultimately chooses to reject instrumentality, and Unit-01 bursts from the being's eye and breaks the Spear of Longinus in two. The Rei/Adam/Lilith being then falls to Earth in pieces, presumably dead.
While there is no official name for this being, it is commonly referred to in the fan community as "Giant Naked Rei" or GNR. However, it's also common to consider this being primarily Lilith. Since Rei was essentially Lilith itself, and Adam (as Kaworu) only appears briefly, it seems that Lilith has primary control over the being.
Adam may have had primary control over the Kaworu body, and perhaps Adam was using Shinji as a weapon to reinstate his reign over Earth, however this had not gone to Adam's plan after Shinji learned the loneliness of Instrumentality and brought everybody back, Adam too died with Rei and Lilith.

Profile
Yui Ikari,[1] (also known as Dr. Yui Ikari) Shinji Ikari's mother and the wife of Gendo Ikari, was a brilliant bioengineer who worked for Project E at Gehirn. Additionally, she is the daughter of a prominent member of SEELE.[2] She ended up assimilating with Evangelion Unit-01 in 2004 as result of her Contact Experiment, this event changes the (at the time) young protagonist Shinji Ikari's life forever. She may be marked as dead, but her spirit lives on within the Eva as eternal proof of humanity's existence.
Though seldom seen in Lilin form, Yui Ikari is one of the most powerful presences in the series. When she is seen as a human, Yui is shown to be kind, optimistic, and motherly. But the most striking part of her personality is her faith in humanity and the belief that it is worth preserving and remembering.
As a student at Kyoto University, she met her "sensei", Kozo Fuyutsuki. The nature of their academic relationship is unknown. Fuyutsuki's specialty was metaphysical biology, which has little or nothing to do with what Yui was officially studying, bioengineering. However, the two were close, and she regarded him as a friend and confidant. Relationships
Gendo Ikari
Yui became romantically involved with a mysterious man, several years older than herself, named Gendo Rokubungi, who was constantly the source of shady rumors — among them that Gendo had approached Yui for nothing but her talent and her affiliation with SEELE. Regardless, in Yui's own words, he was "quite a sweet person. It's just that no one knows it."
After Yui (presumably) graduated, she married Gendo, and the latter took on her surname.[3] He became involved with SEELE, joining the Katsuragi Expedition to serve as an auditor, although it's not said what Yui was doing during this time. After Gendo returned, they had a child together, Shinji Ikari — who, if a girl, would have been named Rei.
History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Before
Yui took up work at the Artificial Evolution Laboratory in Hakone, Japan, which was really a front for SEELE's secret research organization, Gehirn. Her skills in bioengineering went towards the "Adam Revival Project", more commonly called "Project E". In 2004, Yui volunteered herself as the test subject for the Contact Experiment with the incomplete Unit-01 (a decision she had made by autumn of the previous year). She brought the 4-year-old Shinji to the site of the experiment so that she could "show [him] the bright future". The experiment, allegedly, was part of Gehirn's research into the creation of artificial souls, but it resulted in a "freak accident" instead, wherein her soul was absorbed into the Eva's Core and her body reverted to LCL. Gendo subsequently undertook a "Salvage Operation" that attempted to recreate Yui's body and fix her soul back into it, but this failed, instead resulting in the creation of the first Rei Ayanami.[4]
Yui as Unit-01
Yui's soul remained inside of Unit-01 throughout the series, with her son Shinji piloting it to defeat the Angels. Despite NERV's extensive system of restraints, Yui's soul could take control of the Eva's body in situations where Shinji was in extreme danger. Her control manifested itself in Berserk mode, a state of greatly increased power and savagery.
She first moved all by herself in Episode 01, protecting Shinji from falling lights, and in the following battle in Episode 02, where she took control and defeated Sachiel when Unit-01 shuts down after sustaining severe damage from the Angel. In Episode 16, she made contact with her son and took control of the Eva immediately before all power to the life support systems failed, breaking out of and killing the twelfth Angel, Leliel. Finally, she manifested in Episode 19 against the fourteenth Angel, Zeruel. This time, in addition to taking control over the Evangelion and quickly defeating the Angel, she also ingested its S2 Engine in the process.
When the Third Impact arrived and Rei III rejected Gendo, control of Third Impact was given to Shinji and, ultimately, Yui. After Shinji's rejection of The Human Instrumentality Project, Yui took the Spear of Longinus and floated out towards space, becoming an eternal testament to humanity's existence, as Evangelion Unit-01.[5]
Agenda and Legacy
Evangelion Unit 01 with hair (EoE) Yui's soul within Eva Unit-01. In Episode 20, Shinji goes on a spiritual journey while trapped within the Eva. During this time, Shinji overhears a conversation between his mother and father.
Gendo: He has to live after the Second Impact, doesn't he? In this hell...
Yui: If he wants to survive, anywhere could be like Heaven. He has a chance to be happy anytime because he's alive.
Gendo: I see. You're right.
Yui reveals to Gendo that she believes anyone can find Heaven; they must have the will to survive, and they will attain happiness. This belief is passed on to Shinji, first in his return to the physical world in Episode 20, and later in his choice to be "alive" (existing as human in physical form with an A.T. Field) rather than accept Instrumentality.[6] Yui's beliefs may also be exemplified in her romantic relationship with Gendo, however, Gendo's desire to be associated with SEELE raised questions concerning whether he was truly in love with Yui or whether he was using her to get closer to SEELE. The fact that his every action for the next decade was made in pursuit of reuniting with Yui suggests he was not just using her; conversely, since she kept some of her agenda secret from Gendo, she may in a sense have been using him.
In episode 21, Yui describes Gendo as "...quite a sweet person. It's just that no one knows it." [7]
Yui has her own agenda, different from SEELE's, and ultimately different from Gendo's as well. Much, but not all of her agenda is presented in the series. See Theory and Analysis: Yui's Agenda for details. In Other Media
Shinji Ikari Raising Project Manga
In Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji Ikari Raising Project, Yui Ikari is not only still alive, but often used as a comedic character. She is very much the driving force in her marriage, and often assumes authority over Gendo.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gakuen Datenroku
In Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gakuen Datenroku,, Yui is stated to have been killed in a tragic lab accident when Shinji was a boy. She was the leader and progenitor of the "pillar" research that would lead to the development of the EVA weapons. The EVAS used by Shinji and others were developed using her biological data as a base framework.[8]
In the finale, it is revealed that Yui had survived and instead ended up being absorbed into the Tree of Y'ggdrasil, an artifact that maintains the stability reality. She kills Gendo after he attempts to force Shinji into the tree as a replacement, which leads to her own demise as well. After Yui's death, Kaworu Nagisa sacrifices himself and takes her place in the Tree.
- #6Adam
Keys: Adam
NAME MEANING "Mankind", "Earth" SYMBOLISM Seed of Life NUMBER 1st
Adam (アダム, Adamu?) (Hebrew: בראשית ,אדם i:xxvi) is the designation of the 1st Angel, the first of Earth's two Seeds of Life and the progenitor of the Third Impact indirectly through the actions of the Seventeenth Angel, but directly through the actions of a member of the Eighteenth Angel (a Lilin, specifically, Shinji Ikari). Adam is also the genetic basis of the Evangelions, although this is not the case for Unit-01, as it was built from Lilith. It is succeeded by Lilith.
Adam in its embryonic state. Adam's distinct physical features are never clearly shown, since, in the available glimpses of Adam's adult form, it is either partially covered by ice or in the form of a glowing silhouette, the "Giant of Light". However, it is visibly a giant humanoid with a morphology strikingly similar to that of an Evangelion, which is appropriate considering the genetic relationship between Adam and the Evas.
The Giant of Light is observed with shoulder pylons, although a still-shot of the Katsuragi Expedition excavating Adam[1] confirms that the pylons were not initially present, implying that—similarly to what would be done with the Evas later—they were added as restraint mechanisms by the research team.
Adam possesses the ability to manifest translucent "wings" ("Wings of Light"), which it begins to spread before reaching the surface of the research base. These greatly enlarge and split into four upon Adam's explosion.
Second Impact reduced Adam's body into an embryonic state resembling a tetrapod embryo (complete with four defined limbs) in early development. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Adam's excavation Adam's resting place. Adam was created by the First Ancestral Race billions of years ago and sent to Earth within the "White Moon" to fill the Earth with its progeny, the Angels. However, before Adam could accomplish its mission, the "Black Moon" transport containing a second Seed of Life, Lilith, accidentally crash-landed onto Earth. Two Seeds are not meant to exist on the same planet, and in the event that this accidentally occurs, a Spear of Longinus, which all Seeds are accompanied by, should render one Seed inactive. However, the Spear accompanying Lilith was destroyed in the crash, leaving Adam's Spear as the only functional one on Earth. Thus, Adam was placed into suspended animation by its own Spear of Longinus, and the progeny of Lilith populated the planet instead of Angels.[2] The inert Adam, and the Spear that impaled it, were later discovered by the Katsuragi Expedition Team. Adam, and its S² Engine capable of creating limitless energy, became the subject of intense scientific inquiry. This culminated in the Contact Experiment, of which little is known beyond the involvement of a human "donor", DNA "diving" into Adam and "physically fusing", and Second Impact being ushered in as a result. It is heavily implied that the experiment produced the being that became known as Kaworu Nagisa.
Wings of Light (Adam) The Wings of Light expanding. In the Contact Experiment's aftermath, Adam manifested an Anti A.T. Field which destroyed all surrounding life, altered the local atmospheric elements, and opened its Doors of Guf — all actions implying the reawakened Adam was attempting to reclaim the Earth.[3] The Katsuragi Team's attempt to subdue Adam with the Spear of Longinus ultimately failed or was only partially successful. Adam killed the research team before it lost control of its S² Engine transforming it into the "Giant of Light" and ultimately triggering its own self-destruction. As Adam exploded, four massive wings (likened to those of a "devil", "akuma", in the script) manifested and extended as high as the stratosphere. This loss of control was possibly due to the Katsuragi Team's use of the Spear. The worldwide annihilation of Lilith-based life was averted, but not without cost: a global calamity known as Second Impact.
The actual effect brought on by the earlier utilization of the Spear caused Adam's reversion into an embryonic or egg state, rather than being destroyed completely.[4] Adam's soul was separated from its body, presumably when its core was destroyed in the explosion.[5] SEELE retrieved both Adam's soul and what remained of its body from the "Dead Sea" that has once been Antartica. While the former was salvaged into Tabris, the embryo became the subject of the Adam Project and the basis for the "Adam Revival Project", better known as Project E, which aimed to create Adam copies, or Evangelions.
In 2015, the embryonic Adam is clandestinely obtained by Ryoji Kaji, smuggled into Japan via the United Nations Pacific Fleet, and delivered to Gendo Ikari[6] at NERV Headquarters. He notes:
"It's already restored itself this far. It's frozen inside dura-bakelite, but it's still alive. Without a doubt, this is the keystone of the Human Instrumentality Project, isn't it?"[7] Exactly what Kaji means by "keystone" is ambiguous.
Adam is a crucial element in Gendo's own scenario for Third Impact, wherein he intends to use the "forbidden fusion of Adam and Lilith" as a means to achieve reunion with Yui. At an undisclosed point, Gendo has Adam fused into his right palm, and, in the moments before Third Impact, he inserts his hand into Rei. However, rather than carry out his wishes, Rei severs and absorbs Gendo's arm — fusing with Adam, but rejecting Gendo. The "forbidden fusion" is complete when Rei returns to Lilith.
The resultant "Gestalt entity" is Lilith-dominant, only momentarily splitting into "Adam" and "Lilith" parts shortly before Unit-01 transforms into the Tree of Life. Adam manifests in the form of a giant, ghostly white Kaworu Nagisa, which, together with subsequent appearances of the Kaworu avatar, implies that Gendo had salvaged Adam's soul back into its body shortly after Kaworu's death.
The conglomerate being of which Adam became part dies when Shinji rejects Instrumentality. In spite of this, Lilith seems to continue existing in some form afterwards. Adam's own fate, however, is unknown.

In Sadamoto's manga, Gendo devours the Adam embryo whole, and later sprouts an eye on his palm and develops the ability to deploy a defensive A.T. Field. But once he attempts to fuse Adam with Rei, she severs Adam from his hand and merges with Lilith, completing the forbidden union between the two Seeds, but leaving Gendo behind. Once Third Impact is stopped and Instrumentality is rejected, Lilith disappears, leaving Adam's fate unknown.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: the Iron Maiden 2nd
Adam appears in the second volume of the manga and reappears again during the Angels' attack in Tokyo-03. He then tricks Shinji into a dream world but Shinji breaks free after Kaworu sacrifices himself, seemingly destroying both in the process. Due to their absence, this version of Adam seems to take aspects of Lilith, Armisael, Leliel, and Arael.
Trivia
The name "Adam" comes from the first man of the Book of Genesis. Much as the Biblical Eve was created from Adam's body, Project E created the Evangelions "from Adam's flesh" via cloning. The second book of Enoch refers to Adam as the Second Angel.[8]. In NGE, Adam is the First Angel, and Lilith, not Adam, is the Second Angel. However, all humans descend from the Second Angel, whether Adam in Enoch, or Lilith in Evangelion. Adam is referred to in The Book of Adam and Eve as "The Bright Angel". It may not be a coincidence that Adam appears as a Giant of Light in the series. Similarly, Adam is said to have stretched from "The Earth to the Firmament (Sky)", which may be referenced by the show in that Adam's wings spread to the upper atmosphere during Second Impact.[1]

Keys: Kaworu Nagisa
AFFILIATION(S) Angel NERV SEELE RANK/TITLE Fifth Child 17th Angel (NGE) AGE 19 (born 13 September 2000 (Virgo)[1]) KNOWN RELATIVES Unknown
Kaworu Nagisa (渚 カヲル, Nagisa Kaworu?), also known as the Angel Tabris (タブリス, Taburisu?), is a fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. He is the Fifth Child and the seventeenth Angel. He is preceded by Armisael.
Sent to NERV by SEELE as a replacement pilot for Unit-02 after Asuka's synchronisation ratio falls below usability, he breaks into Terminal Dogma in order to return to Adam, but after he discovers the being there is actually Lilith, he allows Shinji to destroy him.
He and Rei appear in The End of Evangelion during the Third Impact, communicating with Shinji in regard to the future of humanity and the choice of whether to accept or reject Instrumentality.
Profile
Kaworu[2] (渚カヲル) is both the 17th Angel and the Fifth Child. Although classified as an Angel, Kaworu is similar to Rei Ayanami in being a Seed of Life that inhabits a human body. Despite his human form, Kaworu does not seem to consider himself to be human, referring to humans as "the Lilin" in differentiation from himself.
Kaworu appears humming the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the same music that plays during his descent into Terminal Dogma, and so serves as a leitmotif for his character. The Ninth Symphony itself incorporates an adaptation Friedrich Schiller's Ode to Joy (Ode an die Freude), a poem dedicated to the unity of all men under God. The moment Kaworu opens the doors to Terminal Dogma is in synch with the line "Und der Cherub steht vor Gott"- "And the Cherub (Angel) stands before God".
Kaworu appears comfortable in his identity (far more than Rei), and also warmer and more emotionally open. However, he does show a detachment from human protocols and shares Rei's tendency to speak in universal rather than personal terms. As the vessel for Adam's soul, Kaworu's designation is "Tabris" (Arabic: تبريس). As revealed in Newtype publications such as ADAM and used by Keel Lorenz in the Manga. Tabris (タブリス), the 17th and final Angel. He is considered the Angel of free will, which is considered a gift of God; Although Kaworu was sent by SEELE for a specific purpose, he also has his own agenda.
Unlike the Angels who came before him, but like Rei, Kaworu has a Lilin body, with no visible physical difference from a regular human except for very pale skin, light grey hair and red irises. Also unlike the other Angels, Kaworu wears human clothes. He wears a white shirt and high waisted trousers, like Shinji. He also wears white high top sneakers. Although his body is presumably composed of the same "particle-wave matter" as Rei and the Angels, it is impossible to say if he possesses a core and S² Engine. Tabris is the only Angel to infiltrate Terminal Dogma.
Kaworu's human body is a vessel for the salvaged soul of Adam itself, and wields all of the power that comes with it. He is in effect Adam reborn as a human. His A.T. Field is described by the Magi as the strongest yet encountered (until it is surpassed by Rei's). Kaworu is observed using it for levitation, to control Unit-02, as a massive barrier that prevents the Command Center from receiving wave transmissions, and, (evidently) to bypass the LCL Plant's locking mechanism.
By being both the First Angel (Adam, whose body and soul were separated in Second Impact) and the Seventeenth and final Angel, he is in effect both the first and the last of his kind. Kaworu is "born from Adam", and describes Adam as being the "Mother of us all". As Kaworu is the vessel for Adam's soul, that paradoxically makes him his own mother as well as of all Angels. History

Kaworu's body appears to have been created as a result of the Contact Experiment with Adam, wherein DNA from an unknown human donor dove into and fused with Adam's flesh,[3] explaining Hyuga's discovery that Kaworu was "born" on the day of Second Impact.[4] SEELE salvaged Adam's disembodied soul into Kaworu,[5][6] whom they may have recovered in embryonic form in Antarctica.[7]
Kaworu's origin from Adam, only intimated in the anime, is flatly stated in Sadamoto's manga.[8] Since Kaworu was delivered to NERV by SEELE, it is believed that Kaworu has been living under SEELE's surveillance prior to his appearance in the series.
Kaworu is brought to NERV as the Fifth Child to replace Asuka,[9] who is no longer able to pilot Unit-02. He is only able to pilot Unit-02 whilst its soul is in hiding. In his first test, Kaworu immediately achieves impressive synchronization results. It later emerges that Kaworu is able to achieve whatever level of synchronization he chooses with Unit-02. Though he seems to have been sent to destroy it, Kaworu shows a marked interest in human culture, as well as human issues of pain and loneliness.
Kaworu stands before Lilith Kaworu stands before Lilith. Kaworu is first seen in episode 24, sitting on a stone amongst wreckage due to the previous battle with Armisael, the Sixteenth Angel. When Shinji first sees him sitting on top of an angel statue (a visual theme that binds together appearances of Kaworu[10]), Kaworu was humming part of the composer Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the fourth and final movement "Presto - Allegro assai", more popularly called the "Ode to Joy" after the poem by Friedrich Schiller, from which it is adapted. He then says that he considers singing to be the finest achievement of the Lilin (human) civilization.
Kaworu abruptly tells Shinji that music is beautiful after he stops humming, and begins conversing with him in a kind manner, referring to him as "Mr. Ikari". After Shinji asks him how he knows who he is, Kaworu tells Shinji he is "rather ignorant of (his) own position".[11]. Confused and frustrated about what to do since all of his friends have evacuated the city, Asuka is mentally distressed and in a ward, and Rei appears to not remember recent events, Shinji begins seeking friendship from Kaworu.
Following their initial meeting, Kaworu accompanies Shinji to a NERV bathing room. While sitting together in the bath, the boys display a degree of comfort around one another. At one point, Kaworu places his hand on Shinji's, who allows Kaworu's hand to linger on his own, Kaworu then proclaims he likes Shinji. At the end of the bathhouse scene, Shinji tells Kaworu that he needs to go to bed, to which Kaworu is confused and asks if they will go together, to which Shinji is quick to decline, though he does spend the night at Kaworu's apartment, sleeping on the floor beside Kaworu's bed, afraid of going to his own home and facing Misato, and with Asuka having disappeared.[12] Shinji feels comfortable talking about his past to Kaworu, who then asks him if Shinji dislikes other people. Shinji explains that he doesn’t care, but that he does hate his father. He internally reflects on why he shared this with Kaworu.
After the NERV staff become suspicious of Kaworu's high synchronization rates with Unit-02, and Misato and Hyuga learn that he can set his synch rate to anything he wants, an alert is issued that Unit-02 has activated without a pilot inside, and someone is descending towards Terminal Dogma; it is Kaworu, who is identified as the 17th and final Angel. Shinji is placed into Unit-01 and pursues Kaworu, who manipulates Unit-02 to slow down Shinji in Unit-01. Shinji apologizes to Asuka as he is fighting her by proxy.
A Smile of Betrayal Kaworu asks for Shinji to kill him. Kaworu proceeds to Terminal Dogma, and after activating the door to open and entering, appears to reach an understanding that the giant crucified there is in fact not Adam, but rather Lilith. After Shinji defeats Unit-02, Kaworu allows Shinji to grasp him in Unit-01's hand. Shinji is hurt that Kaworu betrayed him just like (his) father did[13] and lied to him about his identity after befriending him, but is still resistant to killing him. However, Kaworu tells Shinji that his life is complete and had more meaning after meeting him, and requests to be killed, claiming that to choose how one dies is the only true freedom. Following an extended period of silence, Shinji grants his request.
The End of Evangelion
In The End of Evangelion, the Mass Production Evangelion's Dummy Plugs are prominently marked "KAWORU", suggesting that SEELE was in possession of clones of Kaworu just as NERV was in possession of clones of Rei for the Dummy Plug system for the original Evas.
Kaworu first appears in The End of Evangelion as the Human Instrumentality Project is being initiated. At first, when the giant Lilith/Rei appears to Shinji, he is terrified by it. It then transforms into Kaworu, which calms Shinji down. Rei then turns back to her original self as Yui tells him that she represents his hopes and dreams. As Shinji is asked what he wishes for, he has visions of woman's breasts being clutched, and then initially enters Instrumentality. Kaworu reappears when Gendo is confronted by Yui while Instrumentality takes place, accusing Gendo of running away from the world before getting hurt, before Gendo is killed by an apparition of Unit-01.
Later, Kaworu and Rei appear to Shinji and ask him about the future of humanity and if he wants to accept Instrumentality or not. Shinji, however, says that this is merely a pretense and that he wishes to return to reality, because at least there he will know his feelings are real.
Relationships
Relationship with Shinji
Though fans have speculated on the exact nature of Shinji's relationship with Kaworu, it is clear that Kaworu represents a sort of idealized figure to Shinji,[14][15] as he appears out of seemingly nowhere when Shinji is completely desperate for any sort of connection with anyone, as all of his friends are either dead, unreachable or alienated from him. Kaworu had premeditated encountering Shinji in the lake.[16][17][18] He immediately shows great interest in Shinji, making him initially uncomfortable.[19] However, Kaworu telling him he liked him surprised Shinji as he is afraid of talking to Asuka, Misato or Rei, as Shinji has internalized his belief that nobody cared about him thanks to his own partly self-imposed isolation - afterwards, feeling that Kaworu has simply used him further reinforces this, as he thinks everyone is lying to him, because Shinji is unwilling to recognize the ambiguity and insecurity in other people, and the risk and uncertainty involved in reaching out to them himself, something Kaworu temporarily allowed him to ignore. Kaworu uses the ambiguous "suki" form which includes intimacy or friendship or anything more and can simply mean "like" or "fond of", and that he is deserving of "koui" (好意), which means simply "good will" or "favor", not "koi", "love".[20] When he mentions this to Misato later, Shinji also used the ambiguous "suki" form. This line has necessary ambiguity in order to represent Kaworu's own lack of understanding regarding levels of intimacy and societal norms, part of what shocks Shinji and allows Kaworu to bypass his barriers of self-defense, as he isn't even aware those exist, as he himself has none. When Shinji is fighting Kaworu, he states Kaworu has betrayed him, just like his father did, indicating he might have been seeking a similar form of support from him, reinforcing his role as an idealization.[15][13][21][22] This metaphorical meaning of his presence is emphasized further with the reappearance of Kaworu in End of Evangelion, when Shinji is traumatized by experiencing Misato's death and seeing Asuka's dead Eva, Shinji becomes desperate, but Kaworu reveals himself to be part of Lilith to stop Shinji from going into a frenzy and allow Third Impact to begin, although Shinji only enters Instrumentality after Lilith reverts to Rei's form and melts by seeing a woman's breasts, when Yui asks him what he wishes for. Regardless, Kaworu forms a strong connection with Shinji. His absence from Instrumentality and even the Congratulations scene when even characters like Aoba are present bring into question how much Kaworu affected him besides Shinji's own desperation. Shinji, in fact, seeking unconditional affection from everybody, unwilling to return their own needs, is a fact that has hindered Shinji's happiness throughout most of the series, and Kaworu, being a somewhat non-human character without his own emotional needs (whereas Rei had slowly developed those) is the only one that does that. Moreover, the way Kaworu treats Shinji as a sort of avatar for humanity also brings into question if his affection is directed towards humanity as a whole.[23][24][25][26] Official supllemental material also notes this angle, explaining that Kaworu evolved from his early role on Evangelion Proposal as an Angel disguised as cat possessing a human boy,[27] as ultimately "This act of having his life ended by his friend Shinji was symbolic of Kaworu's desire for humanity to choose the path of life".[28][29][30]
This, paired with the fact that Shinji had killed what he saw as a human being and someone he cared about, was part of what drove him into his state of absolute despair in Episode 25, in which he declared that he felt unworthy even of the piloting which had consumed his identity, thinking that if all he did was hurt and kill others, it was better to do nothing. By that, though, he may have condemned Asuka, who was fighting against the Mass Production Evangelions, to death. Had this not been the case, it is very possible he and Asuka could have defeated the Evas and stopped Third Impact altogether, a fact that greatly benefits SEELE. Shinji depositing all of his hopes for self-worth onto Kaworu, and having that fail him, also reinforces Shinji's notions that if he can't rely unconditionally on people and never risk rejection then he is not actually loved by anyone at all and everyone should just die, part of what motivates him to start Third Impact. In End of Evangelion, Shinji desperately seeks this same sort of unconditional affection from Asuka, and is still certain that he is unloved and unworthy, as he demonstrates he has, in fact, returned to his own childish beliefs about himself, even after the way Kaworu (whom he does not even mention) treated him, and other characters respond to him that he is, in fact, liked and treated nicely by them, but Shinji refuses to believe it. In contrast to Kaworu, when Shinji, in a similar state of desperation, asks for Asuka's own unconditional affection, Asuka refuses as she does not want to be an emotional crutch and an escape for him, and demands he gives himself to her as well, but Shinji is unwilling to give back any affection himself. Asuka says he doesn't really like anyone, as he doesn't even love himself. When Kaworu and Rei as Adam and Lilith state they collectively represent the hope for understanding and love, Shinji replies it is just a pretense, but if he returns to the real world, at least there he will know his feelings are real.[19]
Relationship with SEELE
Kaworu was sent to NERV by SEELE in order to advance their goal of Instrumentality through a Third Impact that would occur under their direction. Before his final battle, Kaworu is seen talking with a phantasm of SEELE that apparently only he can see and it can be assumed that he has been in previous communication with SEELE (for example being briefed on his mission to enter NERV as a pilot). The conversation indicates that they have (falsely) told them that they favor the "true successor" Angels over their own kind.[31]
It is uncertain what exactly SEELE had in mind for Kaworu. Did they plan for him to attack Terminal Dogma, or was that his own plan? We do know that once the attack commenced they wanted Unit-01 to defeat him,[32] and presumably, him being killed by Shinji was a necessary part of their plan, allowing them to start their own version of Third Impact. It also begs into question if they needed Kaworu to contact Shinji, and while this seemed to have been his own initiative, they did benefit from Shinji's state of mind afterwards, as Kaworu proceeds to go after Adam even after meeting Shinji and getting to know him, and even uses Unit 02 in order to delay him. In fact, Kaworu only changes his mind when he realizes it is in fact Lilith in Terminal Dogma, as by that point he is unable to start any sort of Third Impact regardless.
Similarly, Kaworu's subsequent actions also greatly help SEELE: had Shinji not been in a state of mind that made him refuse to pilot for most of End of Evangelion, it is very possible he and Asuka could have defeated the MP Evas and stopped Third Impact altogether. He is also responsible for stopping Shinji from going into a frenzy after seeing Asuka's dead Eva, which allows Third Impact to begin, as the Seele councilmen start chanting ritualistically.

Appearance
He wears a ponytail, has constant chin stubble, and is always referred to by his surname. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Kaji appears to be a triple agent, working as a special inspector for NERV, while secretly investigating the organization for the Japanese Ministry of the Interior, and at times seemingly acting as a cat's-paw both for and against Gendo Ikari and SEELE. In addition, he seems to maintain personal motivations beyond loyalty to any organization, and speaks frequently of his desire to "find the truth." Kaji can be said to have a green thumb, as he cultivates a watermelon patch close to NERV HQ (This is only seen in the anime; he is watering the watermelons while Zeruel is attacking the GeoFront.).
Kaji and Misato Katsuragi were lovers during college, but they had long since broken up by the start of the series and do not see each other again until she flies out to the UN fleet ferrying Unit-02 and Asuka Langley Sohryu to Japan. After he returns to NERV headquarters, Kaji and Misato flirt and fight, with Kaji teasing Misato, and Misato constantly calling him "stupid."
Most of the time, Kaji is very easygoing and jovial, always remaining cool and composed and maintaining his detached sense of humor even during times of crisis. He also flirts unabashedly with his female peers and coworkers, which further draws Misato's ire. Despite his irresponsible public persona, Kaji demonstrates a great level of personal responsibility and worldly wisdom in his personal interactions. He acts as something of a father figure to both Asuka and Shinji Ikari, particularly the latter. Asuka is openly infatuated with him, something he coolly and repeatedly deflects. A common interpretation is to see Kaji as Shinji's positive adult mirror, with Gendo as a more negative model. Similarly, Misato and Ritsuko are mirrors for Asuka, as are their respective relationships.[1] He offers Shinji contemplative advice and tries to help him understand the nature of social dynamics. Behind all of this, however, Kaji hints at being a very melancholic and lonely individual, plagued by doubts of his own sincerity and whether he is capable of true love. The only times during the series - including his death - in which Kaji seems to be truly sincere are during his philosophical discussions with Shinji and his dialogue with Misato in Episode 15.
Kaji smile (NGE) Kaji's last moment Kaji is ordered by SEELE to kidnap Deputy Commander Kōzō Fuyutsuki. so that he can be interrogated. Kaji follows his orders, but disobeys SEELE by rescuing Fuyutsuki later and returning him to NERV. Prior to this, he remarks that his NERV I.D. card is the color of blood; also, during their last meeting, Kaji gives Misato a small capsule which contains the information for the Human Instrumentality Project, then says "This may be the last gift I give you." He then leaves Misato a farewell phone message, indicating that he knew he would likely be dead when she heard it. Fuyutsuki even remarks that his actions will cost him his life. Kaji is eventually shot and killed by an unknown assailant. In the anime, Kaji remarks to his killer, "You're a little late, aren't you?" which has led to debate among Evangelion fans as to the identity of the killer, who is described in the episode Film-book as "a third party working either for SEELE or for NERV's Intelligence Division".[2][3][4] The film-book also states that the killer was not a main character. This fan impression shocked Anno so much that it was directly addressed in the Director's Cut version of Episode 21, perhaps the single case of a clear-cut retcon in Eva.

Kaji in manga Kaji in the manga. In Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's manga of the series, Kaji is given a back story which was not given in the anime and which relates to his behavior. In the aftermath of the Second Impact, Kaji and his brother were orphans and members of a group of children who united in order to survive the chaos. One day while stealing food from a JSSDF facility, he was caught by soldiers, who threatened to kill him if he did not reveal the location of the gang's hideout. Kaji chose to betray his brother and friends, who were killed by the guards, and he has been plagued by guilt ever since. His role in the story is identical to that given in the anime, but there are a number of differences. He talks with Shinji and helps him to remember his mother's disappearance, and tells Shinji of his past to motivate Shinji to return to NERV after the fight against Bardiel (this takes place in a hidden supplies cellar rather than a watermelon patch). In the anime, Kaji is shot and killed by an unknown assailant; however, in the manga, it takes two shots, and Kaji chides the murderer for his poor aim. As he is dying, he sees the shadowy figures of his brother and friends and greets them.
Kaji later appears during Third Impact as Asuka's transition guide.

Later he gets a cellphone call by Misato Katsuragi telling him to send Shinji's personal itens to a specific location, since he is going to be under NERV's care after Gendo's return. He and Misato discuss and she lashes out on him, telling that they should never contact each other from now on

Profile
First seen at the south pole during the events of Second Impact, the Adams are a collective of massive giants. While they slightly vary in appearance, they all share common traits including their halos and Wings of Light. History
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
During the Katsuragi Expedition, a contact experiment was conducted, resulting in the destruction of the South Pole and the release of the Adams. This event would later be called the Second Impact and the true nature of its cause would be hidden from the public. Fifteen years later in the present day, the four crosses of the Adams are still present in the center of the crater at the South Pole.
During Evangelion Unit-01 battle with the Tenth Angel, and Unit-01 shoots a beam with its eyes at the Angel to destroy its AT-Field, during which one can observe a third eye shooting a beam from the forehead. Later, when Unit-01 enters a state of pseudo-evolution in an attempt to save Rei Ayanami, inadvertently beginning the Near Third Impact, the unit can be seen with a third eye, making it greatly resemble one of the Adams, though the reason for this similarity is never elaborated on further.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo
During the Evangelion Mark.09's assault on the Wunder, the unit is referred to as an "Adams' Vessel". Later in the film, the unit is also referred to as the "Wunders' original master" implying some connection between the Adams, the Vessels and the Wunder.
The Evangelion 13 is also referred to as one of the surviving Adams.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time
Continuing on from the last film, it is revealed that there were 5 Adams, each sealed within the Vessel of the Adams, those being Evangelion Mark.09-A, Evangelion Mark.10, Evangelion Mark.11, Evangelion Mark.12 and Evangelion 13. The four first Adams (Mark.09-12) are the masters of NERV made warships, the NHG Erlösung, the NHG Erbsünde, the NHG Gebet and the WILLE controlled Wunder. When used together, they possess the ability to open the Doors of Guf leading to the Minus Space.
Mari upon sinking the remaining NHG ships, says that the "Lilin won't be needing you anymore, rest in peace, Adams".
Trivia
One of the Adams has a third eye. This motif reappears with the Unit-01 as the Radiant Giant at Near Third Impact. While some kind of link between the two is implied, there is no way at present to know what that might entail. It is possible the connection was either changed for future movies or was a Red herringWP . Alternatively, it may simply have been a callback to the End of Evangelion where Unit-01, having turned into the tree of life, ended up being absorbed into the giant Adam/Lilith/Rei hybrid via its third eye. IPEA's logo also depicts a 3 eyed giant. The number of Adams and the association of a cross with each of them may be a reference to the Ultraman series, especially the episode of Ultraman Ace with the debut of Ace Killer and Baraba. The script referring to them as "giants of light" may also be in reference to the Ultramen - as they are frequently referred to as "giants of light". The Adams also all have unique cores, whose unique details reference several Ultramen of the Ultra Brothers. From left to right: A core on the chest, surrounded by six red dots (Ultraman Zoffy, the leader; his Color Timer is surrounded by Specium studs in a curved line); A plain core on the chest (Ultraman); a core on the chest, surrounded by a ring (Ultraman Jack, whose silver Specium body pattern is the same as Ultraman's with an additional silver outer line; also somewhat resembles Ultraman Orb's Color Timer); and a small core on the forehead, similar to a third eye (Ultraseven; he lacks a Color Timer and instead has a Beam Lamp on his forehead).

Arael appears as a jagged, winged creature made of intense light that hovers around Earth. Its body appears to be made of bright blue light. Its Core, difficult to see due to the Angel's own luminosity, is held outside its main body by two inferior wings. Its total wingspan seems to be several times larger than that of an Evangelion, based on its size relative to the Spear of Longinus, though Arael and an Eva never physically meet directly. Arael uses an odd application of its A.T. Field to directly probe a human mind, visually represented as a diffuse ray of light. This probe is psychologically traumatic, though it is unclear if this harm was intentional or a byproduct of an information gathering probe. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Arael beam attack Arael unleashing its beam attack. The battle begins as the Angel is detected by NERV moving into orbit over Japan. NERV react by deploying both Asuka in Unit-02 as the primary defender equipped for long range firing (against orders, although Misato allows her to take point after she launches first anyway) and Rei in Unit-00 as the backup, while a storm rages over Tokyo-3. For a time the situation seems to be a stalemate, with the Angel holding in orbit just outside the defensive envelope of the long range weapons the Evangelions are equipped with, but the stalemate ends abruptly as a beam of light suddenly Spears down from the Angel directly at Unit-02. Initially thought to be a particle weapon, it becomes clear that it is a form of mental probe with characteristics somewhat similar to an A.T. Field, and which immediately begins to cause immense distress to Asuka. Reflexively Asuka returns fire, but at such an extended range, her positron rifle bolts dissipate harmlessly. Asuka continues to wildly fire until she runs out of ammunition, becoming more distressed by the second. With warnings from Doctor Akagi that her mind will be permanently damaged if the attack continues, Misato orders her to withdraw, but a furious Asuka asserts that she would rather die than admit defeat, defying the order.
Rei, using a heavier Positron Sniper Rifle (possibly the same rifle used against Ramiel or a production variant of the same) then engages with a maximum power shot which succeeds in striking Arael, but at such an extended range too much energy is lost and the beam is harmlessly deflected by the Angel’s defensive A.T. field.
Arael uses its probe to force Asuka to relive her worst childhood memories; most notably her mothers suicide and her painful younger years, and to some albeit indirect degree seems to be attempting to understand it's. Asuka begins to to suffer a complete mental breakdown, broadcast live to the helpless NERV staff. Shinji passionately pleads with both Misato and his Father to let him deploy in Unit-01 to save her, although both Gendo and Fuyutsuki flatly decree that the risk of Unit-01 being contaminated by the Angel far too great. Showing uncharacteristic strength as Unit-02 shuts down and its life support reaches critical levels, Shinji continues to push his Father, who eventually and uncharacteristically agrees. Gendo orders Rei to go to Terminal Dogma and retrieve the Spear of Longinus impaling Lilith.
An aghast Fuyutsuki quietly argues with the Commander as Rei descends to retrieve the Spear, pointing out that SEELE will never allow the Spear to be wasted in such a way, but a calm Gendo asserts that the need is the only justification and that there is no other way to defeat this Angel. Nonetheless, it is clear that Gendo is happily killing two birds with one stone; eliminating the Angel and removing the Spear from play entirely, as it seems to be a threat to his own plans.
Lance of Longinus2 Unit-00 about to throw the Spear of Longinus. Rei returns to the surface with the Spear. Hurried calculations are made and after a ten second countdown, Rei throws the Spear with considerable force. The Spear propels itself with such force the storm above the city is dissipated, before neutralizing Arael's A.T, Field and destroying it's core, before finally becoming locked in an inaccessible lunar orbit.

- #18Armisael
Keys: Armisael
Profile
Armisael initially appears as a rapidly revolving ring of light, double-helical in form, which may represent a
Plasmid . Its pattern cycles between blue and orange, from which Ritsuko Akagi concludes that the Angel does not have a fixed form. The two helices eventually fuse together, and the ring severs at a single point to take on a thread-like form, several times longer than an Eva's height.
The Angel's second form is capable of moving extremely quickly, and it effortlessly penetrates the A.T. Field of Unit-00. Point-blank fire from the Eva's sniper rifle is completely ineffective. A Progressive Knife attack makes Armisael bleed (red, as per nearly all angels), and causes it visible pain, although it doesn't seem to have any lasting effect.
Upon contacting another being, Armisael begins to undertake "bio-fusion", that is, physically invading the foreign body with its own biomass. The invasion is externally visible as venous protrusions that spread and thicken as fusion continues. Eventually, psychological contact will become possible. Whether or not this methodology technically constitutes an "attack" from Armisael's perspective is ambiguous.
Armisael possesses advanced metamorphic properties. ADVERTISEMENT
History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Armisael suddenly appeared hovering in the air on the outskirts of Tokyo-3. Unit-00 was launched to investigate it, but the Angel appeared dormant. Just as Unit-00 was about to withdraw so the Angel could be observed more, it transformed from its ring-shape into its thread-shaped combat form, pierced Unit-00's Core with one of its thread's "ends", and began merging with Unit-00. Unit-00 shot the body of Armisael several times, but this did not stop it.
Rei infected by Armisael (EP 23) Rei being infected by the Angel Armisael. The mind of Armisael itself then contacted the mind of Rei, and engaged in a brief conversation, remarking on their mutual loneliness. Unit-02 was launched, but failed to even start because Asuka's synchronization level had fallen to critical lows. In desperation, the order freezing the use of Unit-01 was suspended, but as soon as Unit-01 was launched, Armisael tried to merge with it as well, with Unit-01 narrowly avoiding it.
Unit-01 grabbed Armisael's other end in its hands, and stabbed it with its prog knife, causing it to howl in pain like Rei.
Fearful for Shinji's survival, Rei set her A.T. Field to maximum to draw Armisael to herself and try to contain it temporarily, and then activated Unit-00's self-destruct. This resulted in a massive explosion that destroyed Armisael, but also destroyed a large portion of Tokyo-3 as well, resulting in the creation of a new artificial lake.
Evangelion Unit 00 (Armisael) The "Angel Tower". After Armisael achieves psychological contact with Rei, a massive growth amalgamating the forms of the dead Angels manifests from Unit-00's back. The nature of this "Angel Tower" (as it is sometimes unofficially called) is steeped in mystery. The Renewal Vol. 6 DVD Booklet says this much:
In the process of eroding Unit-00, a heteromorphous object grows out of the unit's back. It enlarges and expands into a form that is a confused combination of the Angels that have previously appeared, from the Third Angel to the Fifteenth Angel. It can be deduced that the genetic information of all the Angels from the Third onwards is included in either this Angel or Unit-00, and that this object was reconstructed and deployed based on that material.
However, this assessment seems somewhat dubious, as all evidence in the show indicates that the Angels' individualized forms are not determined genetically, but by their A.T. Fields. An alternative theory suggests that Armisael had collected the souls of its dead siblings and is attempting to use Unit-00 to resurrect them.

Asuka Langley Sohryu (惣流・アスカ・ラングレー, Sōryū Asuka Rangurē?) is a 14-year-old fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise and one of the main female characters. Asuka is designated as the Second Child ("Second Children" in the original Japanese versions) of the Evangelion Project and pilots the Evangelion Unit-02. Her surname is romanized as Soryu in the English manga and Sohryu in the English version of the TV series, the English version of the film, and on GAINAX's website.
Character Overview
Asuka is one-quarter Japanese. Asuka is a native of Germany, having been raised there, though her nationality is American. Asuka's native language is German, and in both the series and the manga she tends to curse in German. Asuka was born to an American father, known only as Mr. Langley and a German-Japanese mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu. In addition, she also has a step-mother, Langley's second wife. She is a child prodigy and has earned a university degree in an unspecified field as a teenager; she also speaks fluent Japanese, but has trouble reading and writing kanji. Asuka had years of training starting from a young age to become a pilot for the Evangelion. Asuka is very proud of being an Eva pilot, and near-constantly wears her A10 nerve clips in her hair because she wants everyone around her to know that she is a pilot. Asuka's iconic catch-phrase (always directed at Shinji) was "anta baka?!" (あんたバカァ?!?), "anta" being a contraction of "anata" meaning "you" and "baka" literally meaning "fool" or "idiot". The official English voice recording renders this as "What are you, stupid?!"
Character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto explained that he "first designed an Asuka-type girl as the lead character", but felt it might be too similar to previous anime that he and Anno had worked on, such as Gunbuster and Nadia. He suggested to Anno that they change the lead character to a boy, which would be more in keeping with the robot genre.[2] In the initial project, she was described as "a determined girl" who adapts to the situation in which she finds herself, passionate about video games and "aspires to become like Ryoji Kaji". In the nineteenth episode, she would have had to be seriously injured in her attempt to protect Shinji, who would have thus "proved his worth" trying to save her.[3] As Sadamoto and Anno designed the series, Sadamoto came to believe that Asuka would occupy the position of an "'idol' in the Eva world". Asuka should have represented "[Shinji's] desire for the female sex", as opposed to Rei Ayanami's "motherhood",[4] and would have been "the idol of Neon Genesis Evangelion". He also described his belief that the relationship between Asuka and Shinji would be similar to the relationship between Jean, Nadia's love interest and eventual husband in the earlier Nadia. Asuka's personality, as well of those for the other characters, was designed so as to be understood at a glance.[2] Anno also thought of her as a Nadia with a different hairstyle.[5] During most of the series, she is 13 years old, younger than Shinji by almost half a year.[6] Appearance
Asuka has long burnt orange hair and dark blue eyes. Asuka's hair is loose, with the flanks held in twin tails with her red Interface Headset. She wears a school uniform as her most iconic outfit, which consisted of a dark blue pleated overall dress over a white button-up blouse with short puffed sleeves, a red bow attached to the collar, white knee socks with red stripes and black Mary Jane shoes. She wears a red watch on her wrist. She also wears outfits such as her pale yellow dress with a lavender choker and red Mary Jane shoes.
Her plugsuit is red, stylized with fancy layers and accents with a 02 symbol printed onto the plugsuit. Family
Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu, was a scientist at Gehirn's German branch of the Evangelion Project. When Asuka was four years old, Kyoko participated in a contact experiment with Unit-02, similar to the experiment performed by Yui Ikari with Unit-01. She survived the test but became insane, believing that Asuka's doll was her daughter and refusing to acknowledge the real Asuka, referring to her as "that girl over there." She eventually commits suicide by hanging herself; Asuka found her body when she went to tell Kyoko the good news that she had been chosen to become an Eva pilot.
Asuka Child Front Asuka as a child Not many details about Asuka's father are revealed. What is known about his background is only what can be inferred from Asuka's own; namely that he is an American citizen and that his last name is Langley. Following Kyoko's hospitalization, he started an affair with a German doctor in charge of Kyoko's case, and would later marry her shortly after Kyoko's suicide. This new mother is immediately repelled by Asuka's defensive nature, and finds herself unable to become attached to her. While talking to Shinji, Asuka states that she doesn't hate her stepmother, but she feels as if she could never replace her real mother.[7]
During Kyoko's funeral, Asuka's grandmother had said to Asuka that she was "a strong girl", but it was alright if she needed to cry. However, Asuka protested against the idea and told her grandmother that she had to take care of herself from now on. From that day forward, Asuka promised herself that she would never cry again. This causes her to repress a lot of her emotions, not to mention the emotional scarring that came from her mother's illness and death, leaving her twisted and vulnerable towards the end of the series. Character and Relationships
Asuka introduces class Asuka introducing herself Asuka is a very proud individual, especially in her piloting, and comes across to others as proud and strong, with a very high opinion of both her appearance (particularly her recently "busty" body) and her skill as an Eva pilot. She is stubborn and finds it difficult to express her true feelings to others. She does not like being looked down upon or told what to do as she wants to be viewed as an adult. She is aggressive and can be very opinionated. However, this personality is a front that protects a very vulnerable and insecure girl, a side which the viewer sees in her dreams or thoughts. She is often violent and intrusive of other people's space, especially Shinji's. She also has a strong need to be self-sufficient, and has a great deal of difficulty dealing with her self-perceived failure when she does need help; as her seiyuu Yuko Miyamura wrote of her experiences playing Asuka:
"Just to let you know, Asuka wasn't the most open-hearted character I've ever met...every time I tried to draw myself in closer synchronization, Asuka would never allow herself to sync with me. Even in the end, she would never step across the line and draw closer to me. The last scene in The End of Evangelion was done, and still she had never stepped across that line and come forward. One day, I figured out that there was a wall in Asuka's heart."
Thus her relationship with Shinji is one of the core aspects of the series, and affects both characters on multiple levels (see next section).
Her best (and seemingly her only close) friend is her class representative, Hikari Horaki. Although Asuka and classmate Toji Suzuhara constantly argue, she gives Hikari advice about pursuing Toji. Shinji and Asuka are seemingly attracted to each other, but neither is able to properly express their feelings. Asuka's overbearing attitude and inability to admit her vulnerabilities keeps her from opening up to Shinji. This develops into a central part of the series, culminating into their kiss and Shinji's inaction is later one of the motivations for her worsening state in the series. Besides her attraction to Shinji, Asuka is infatuated with Ryoji Kaji, her former guardian after her mother died, and makes a number of advances toward him which he politely refuses, even as Shinji supplants Asuka's early affections for him. For this reason, she envies her and Shinji's guardian, Misato Katsuragi, especially after Misato and Kaji rekindle their romantic relationship. A common interpretation is to see Misato as Asuka's positive adult role model, with Ritsuko as a more negative model.[8] Similarly, Kaji and Gendo are mirrors for Shinji, as are their respective relationships.[9] The "Director's Cut" of Episode 24 also shows Asuka violently confronting Shinji and saying he's lying when he tells her that Kaji is dead. She also initially tries to befriend Rei Ayanami, but Rei is uninterested. Asuka interprets this as arrogance, and starts to developed deep antipathy towards her. In the English dub, she calls her "wonder girl". In Episode 22, they share an elevator ride in which Rei tells her she needs to open herself to her Eva as Asuka's synch scores are falling, but Asuka violently lashes out, and calls her "the Commander's doll", clearly projecting Rei onto her mother's doll and her own hatred of them. Asuka hates passivity, because it reminds her of dolls and her past trauma.[10]
In her early appearances, Asuka has a high synchronization ratio and displays exceptional skill as an Eva pilot. She is also very aggressive and confident in battle, which works both for and against her as the series progresses. After being defeated in battle by the Angel Zeruel, Asuka's self-confidence (and, correspondingly, her sync ratio and effectiveness as a pilot) begins to dwindle. This comes to a head in Episode 22, when the Angel Arael appears. Burdened by increasingly poor results in synchronization tests, Asuka is infuriated when she is ordered to serve as backup for Rei. She launches herself in Unit-02 and tries to attack the Angel alone but is overwhelmed by its attack, which forces her to relive the painful memories of her past and causes her to suffer a mental and emotional breakdown, and is unable to even activate her Eva in the following episode. Asuka runs away from home, and is eventually found by NERV in a bath tub, starving and near death, as without being able to pilot, Asuka believes she has no reason left to live. History
The End of Evangelion
Main article: Final Scene in End of Evangelion Asuka corpse (EoE) Asuka visualizes her corpse in The End of Evangelion. In The End of Evangelion, Asuka is placed inside Unit-02 for protection from the Japanese Strategic Self Defense Forces assault on the GeoFront. With Unit-02 submerged in a lake and bombarded by depth charges, Asuka declares that she does not want to die and, in a moment of clarity, realizes that her mother's soul is carried within the Eva and has been protecting her all along. She regains her self-identity, engages and defeats the JSSDF, and is later confronted by the Mass Produced Evas. During the battle, she successfully disables all nine opponents; however, Unit-02's power runs out, and the MP Evas' S² Engines allow them to remain functional even after being severely damaged and/or mutilated. They proceed to eviscerate and dismember Unit-02 using their Spear of Longinus replicas, thus causing Asuka's body to actually suffer the wounds inflicted to the machine and apparently killing her (her Entry Plug is never seen being destroyed, but the NERV staff appear to believe she's dead). During this final assault, Asuka is briefly able to reactivate Unit-02 through pure fury, but only enough for it to move its arm slightly, nowhere near the full "Berserker" mode that Shinji is able to achieve. Her final words before death are a whispered "I'll kill you", repeated more and more frantically. Inside Instrumentality, Asuka also demands that Shinji give himself to her, but Shinji is unwilling to give back any affection himself. Asuka confronts Shinji as he desperately asks for help and says he wants to stay with her forever, but Asuka rejects him, claiming he only wants to use her as an escape. Outraged, Shinji chokes her. She is the second person to come back from Instrumentality at the conclusion of the movie, after Shinji rejects it. Asuka caresses Shinji tenderly in a manner reminiscent of Yui, which stops him from choking her again. Asuka's final line is "kimochi warui", roughly translated as "How disgusting".[11]
Asuka's interactions with Shinji
Main article: Shinji and Asuka's Relationship Asuka kiss Shinji Asuka kissing Shinji in Episode 15. Throughout the series, Shinji carries out a deceptively straightforward relationship with Asuka, who is going through puberty and deeply confused and uncertain:
"The thing I would like to say to the friend in my heart is, "Asuka, you're just a fourteen-year-old kid, aren't you?" Fourteen is a time of life when you are thrown against the wall of life. You are forced to learn. It's puberty, where you decide what kind of life you're going to live, right? Evangelion came to its climax just as you hit that point, but after that, what would your choices be, Asuka? What good would you try to do? What kind of adult would you grow into?"
Asuka & Shinji Asuka and Shinji in sync during the battle with Israfel in Episode 9. Shinji and Asuka are seemingly attracted to each other, but neither is able to properly express their feelings. Asuka's overbearing attitude and inability to admit her vulnerabilities keeps her from opening up to Shinji. In the episodes shortly after their first meeting, she seems to enjoy flirting with him and teasing him sexually. Nonetheless, it is through her that Shinji finds the confidence he needed to work hard at synchronizing his movements with hers to defeat the Angel Israfel in Episode 9.[12][13] She and Shinji kiss in Episode 15, but she almost suffocates him by holding his nose shut, not realizing this was making Shinji even more hesitant.[14] As the series progresses and her abilities as a pilot diminish, the resulting damage to her ego causes her to become increasingly blunt to Shinji, as she feels insecure by Shinji's improving performance, something she feels is unearned as Asuka herself has trained her entire life for piloting Eva, unlike Shinji. The Director's Cut of Episode 22 reveals that, despite her actions, she still wants Shinji's affections and is saddened, frustrated and angered by his shying away from her (unable to recognize that her taunts and aggression are keeping him from getting close to her), and has interpreted his earlier passiveness and lack of reaction as conscious rejection.[15][16] Asuka hates passivity, as she associates this with dolls, and how it reminds her of her past trauma with her mother.[11][17]
During Arael's attack on her psyche, when she thinks about Shinji, she states (internally),
"Why are you there damn you?! You don't do anything! You won't help me! You won't even hold me!"[18]
These lines are juxtaposed with Shinji, for instance, rescuing her from the volcano in Episode 10, paying attention to her, showing the clash between Shinji's actions and Asuka's expectations, even as Asuka has difficulty accepting Shinji and recognizing his own insecurities, as well as Asuka's many provocations - like when she tried to tease him in Episode 9, only to be frustrated at him not picking up on her advances. She also seems to be very jealous of Shinji's friendship with Rei, which deepens her disgust toward Rei and fuels her venom toward her, especially in the later episodes.[19]
The fractured state of Asuka and Shinji's relationship becomes a key factor on events in The End of Evangelion. Had Shinji been in a better state of mind, it is very possible he and Asuka could have defeated the Evas and stopped Third Impact altogether, a fact that greatly benefits SEELE. At the start of the movie, Shinji is shown with Asuka in her hospital room, begging her for help and trying to rouse her from unconsciousness. He accidentally pulls loose her vital sign monitors, exposing her breasts; he masturbates to this sight, but afterward is horrified and disgusted with himself for doing so. His guilt and increased self-loathing add to his previous traumas and cause him to become so uncaring of his own existence that he does not resist when the invading JSSDF soldiers try to kill him. This forces Misato to save him and to try to rouse him from this state so that he can escape the GeoFront in Unit-01. The beginning of the trauma of seeing the mangled remains of Unit-02 in the hands of the MP Evas causes Shinji to enter to panic, and he enters Instrumentality as Yui asks him what he wishes for and he has a vision of a woman's clutched breasts.
AsukaShinjiSexEoE Shinji with Asuka on top of him in End of Evangelion Asuka loudly proclaims she can't stand the sight of him, but Shinji replies that it is because he is just like her, as she is implied to be in some sort of sexual fantasy or activity inside Instrumentality with him. Asuka then confronts him on his masturbation at the hospital earlier, claiming that not only she knows about it, but that it is, in fact, a habit, and she dares him to do it again in front of her.[20][21] Asuka claims she wants Shinji all for herself or nothing at all, demanding his reciprocity and commitment. Shinji, however, replies that he cannot understand Asuka because she won't tell him anything. In a scene reminiscent of their kiss scene in Episode 15, he begs Asuka for help, stating he is afraid of Misato and Rei, while also revealing his true feelings for Asuka ("I want to help you, and I want to stay with you forever...You're the only person who can help me."). However, Asuka refuses, claiming he is only using her as an escape. Overwhelmed with his own hopelessness upon her refusing, Shinji loses control and strangles her.
- #20Shikinami Asuka Langley
Keys: Shikinami Asuka Langley
RANK/TITLE Second Girl Captain of the European Air Force Temporary Special Senior Major (WILLE) AGE 18
Profile & Appearance
Much like her original series' incarnation, Asuka Shikinami Langley is a very proud individual, especially in her piloting, and comes across to others as proud and strong, with a very high opinion of both her appearance and her skill as an Eva pilot. She does not like being looked down upon or told what to do as she wants to be viewed as an adult and be praised for her piloting skills. She is aggressive and can be very opinionated. this version of Asuka is significantly different in terms of her history and characteristics compared to Asuka Langley Sohryu: instead of graduating University at the age of 14, she joined the European Air Force, reaching the rank of Captain at age 14, she lacks a fear/hatred of dolls; as she would play with a hand puppet when in low spirits.[1] Other significant differences include her never having any obsessive crush on Ryoji Kaji, not being a close friend of Hikari Horaki, more open to others as she feels open attraction towards Shinji, helps Rei so she can host a dinner party with Shinji and Gendo, lastly she confides to Misato shortly before piloting Unit-03 and joins WILLE under Misato.
In EVANGELION: 3.0 (-46h), a flashback set shortly after Near Third Impact shows Asuka with her hair cut short, her eyes and temples are covered by a grey bandage, later replaced by her usual hair length, and an eye-patch covering her right side. Both display Angel-Sealing Hex Pillars, hinting at her status as a an Angel-Human hybrid. Underneath, Asuka has a large craniotomy scar.[2]
In Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, 14 years later, as result of years of constant war and struggle against remnants of NERV that still intended to cause another Impact, she became colder and far more aggressive than she used to be in spite of retaining most of her former personality. Her voice-actress noted that her current personality was comparable with that of an embittered mercenary.[3] Though she actually worried about Shinji (possibly more than Misato), this worry still didn't abate her anger for the destruction that he inadvertently caused during the fight against the Tenth Angel. Unfortunately, because of everything she has gone through and her own anger towards Shinji she had no chance to tell him about Near Third Impact that he inadvertently caused. To make matters worse, the said anger also pressured Shinji into further being manipulated by Gendo and SEELE, had she put aside her anger and tried to reason with Shinji, he possibly wouldn't have caused Fourth Impact in the first place (in an allusion to both End of Evangelion and Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA). In spite of her negative interactions, Asuka actually never intended to let him die or run away from his problems after Near Third Impact.
Asuka seems to have a thematic association with cats; in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo her Beast Mode has a distinctly feline appearance. She also wears both a hat and a helmet that have cat ear-shaped adornments. She also wears an eye-patch over her left eye. The latter glows during the course of the film, showing that her left eye is maybe still intact but somewhat mutated. ADVERTISEMENT
History
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
Asuka on Unit-02 (Rebuild) Asuka's first appearance Asuka makes her first appearance shortly after defeating the Seventh Angel in her Evangelion Production Model-02 (S-Type Equipment).
Asuka´s pride is put to the test when Misato tells her that Rei invited Shinji to a dinner at her house, while at the time Asuka was cooking for Shinji also since she wanted to get his attention away from Rei, even later meeting Rei on a NERV elevator (the scene is much like Episode 22 from the series). Here she mocks Rei for being the Commander´s toy, and remarks that Shinji and Rei only became pilots due to their connections with Gendo, while she was chosen as a "real" pilot entirely because of her skill. Rei states that she is not a toy and just as Asuka intends to slap her, Rei stops her. Asuka feels empathy toward her as she sees her fingers wounded due to the cooking, and as she leaves the lift, Asuka asks Rei whether she likes Shinji. Rei explains that she doesn't know, but states that she just wants to make him happy, to which Asuka, saddened, throws a temper tantrum, though not before telling herself that Rei indeed likes Shinji.[4]
After this event she takes on the role of the test pilot for the activation of Unit-03 after the incident in the USA with Unit-04. She chooses to do so on her own will as an act of kindness towards Rei, who intended to reunite Shinji with Commander Ikari at the same day of the activation test. On the way to the testing base, Rei through Ritsuko´s cellphone thanks Asuka, an act that makes Asuka oddly happy, since she admits to enjoying her solitude but comments that she has come to enjoy others' company as well. Misato and Asuka are brought closer by a conversation not long prior to the test, where Asuka tells herself that she can even pilot with a big smile just before the capsule is contaminated by the Ninth Angel.
Asuka is not seen for the rest of the film other than in a quarantine chamber with Angel-sealing Hex Pillars. Ritsuko says that although she is alive, her mind has the possibility of being corrupted due to the Eva unit having been possessed by an Angel.
EVANGELION: 3.0 (-46h)
In EVANGELION: 3.0 (-46h), Midori Kitakami recalls events from sometime between both films, Asuka is one of the Evangelion pilot for the WILLE organization. She is sent looking for survivors, with her Evangelion Production Model-02α-EIV being piloted by Mari Makinami Illustrious. Although Mari already took on her "princess" nickname for Asuka, at this time Asuka is dismissive of her, and acts dismissive towards her, calling her "rookie". She tracks down a younger Midori Kitakami and fights off an awakened Failure of Infinity. After rescuing her, Asuka briefly tells Midori that "an idiot" is responsible for it all, telling Midori to fight on if she wants to beat him. This has an effect on Midori, who starts looking up to Asuka.
EVANGELION 3.0 (-120 min.)
In EVANGELION 3.0 (-120 min.), Asuka is waiting to launch Operation US to recover Unit-01 from space. Asuka is looking at the Moon and recites a poem[5] before being surprised by Mari, the other pilot, wearing her school uniform and asking her if she agrees the Moon is beautiful. Mari asks Asuka if she agrees that the Moon is beautiful.[6] Mari explains she wants Shinji to be able to easily recognize them once he's recovered. Misato's plan is for Mari to lead the operation with Asuka in support, as her Evangelion Production Model Custom Type-08α is less damaged, but Mari suggests Asuka take the lead instead for Shinji's sake. Asuka however is reluctant, and believes Shinji himself is dead and unrecoverable. Looking back on memories of Shinji and Misato before Third Impact, Asuka changes her mind, and puts on her old plugsuit from the previous film and improvises a repair. As they launch, Mari sings to Asuka.[7][8]
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo
Already in space and enroute to salvage Unit 01, Asuka faces several Evangelion Mark.04 units, ultimately saved by Shinji awakening inside Unit 01. She shows aggression toward Shinji during their reunion out of both concern and his involvement in Near Third Impact, ranging up to a punch in the window of the room where he is enclosed. She informs him about the "Curse of Eva" which prevents pilots from physically aging before leaving, obviously too upset to explain to Shinji about what has happened on Earth. Suddenly, Evangelion Mark.09 attacks AAA Wunder, prompting Asuka to have Mari destroy it. However, the said Evangelion escapes, much to Asuka's exasperation, before she calls Shinji a "brat" as she knows that they have no chance to reveal NERV's true nature.
Asuka is later seen again with Unit-02, where she intercepts Shinji and Kaworu piloting Evangelion 13. She is shocked that Shinji has piloted another Eva, and demands him to get out of it immediately. Before she can incapacitate Evangelion 13, Evangelion Mark.09 attacks her and nearly dismembers her Evangelion before Mari intervenes with Anti-A.T. Field bullets. As she attacks Evangelion 13, Asuka tries to reason to the misguided Shinji that his actions would cause Fourth Impact and aggressively demands him to stop, even going so far as to threaten him with death. Unfortunately, her Evangelion’s power supply runs out, which gives Shinji the opportunity to swat her aside much to her frustration.
Horrified that he would go too far by removing two spears from Evangelion Mark.06 that fuses with Lilith’s remains, Asuka orders Mari to destroy Evangelion 13 by using Anti-A.T. Field bullets, only for the efforts to be proved futile when the bullets pass through it, and Shinji successfully pulls both spears. The process causes Lilith to explode, and Evangelion Mark.06 is freed from Lilith’s remains. Worse, Evangelion Mark.09 decapitates the said Eva and releases the Twelfth Angel inside. The freed Angel immediately turns into a giant core and Asuka attempts, futilely, to destroyed it. As she and Mari watch, the transformed Twelfth Angel shrinks in size and is devoured by Evangelion 13 and awakes, becoming a Radiant Giant and rising at high speed from Central Dogma in the process. This starts the Fourth Impact.
She and Mari, with their respective Evangelions immediately climb to the surface and watch AAA Wunder being attacked by Mark.09, which has become Adam’s Vessel. Asuka goes to intercept Adam’s vessel, and immediately resorts to using Beast Mode to attack it. The bewildered Rei Ayanami (Tentative Name) in Adam’s Vessel is confused on what her deceased incarnation would do, to which Asuka says she should decide by herself, prompting Rei to eject herself from Adam’s Vessel. When Adam’s Vessel ultimately reveals that its whole body as core with regeneration and counterattacks, Asuka reluctantly has her Eva self-destruct, but not without ejecting herself.
An unspecified amount of time after the end of the battle, Asuka finds Shinji's entry plug in the wasteland created by the Fourth Impact and finds him in an unresponsive state. She drags him through the desert, with Rei following, to "where the Lilin are".
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time
Guiding Shinji and Rei through the outskirts of Tokyo-3, Asuka arrives at a town comprised of survivors.[9]
When not on the Wunder she lives with Kensuke, much like with Mari on the Wunder, and he cares for her as a father figure,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Asuka would rather isolate herself from the rest of the community.[19] After Kensuke leaves on a supply run, Asuka takes a shower and strolls around naked in his house and finds Shinji. Asuka waits for Shinji to do something, but he remains catatonic. This irritates Asuka greatly, as she expected Shinji to "blush a bit or be impressed" at her naked body.[20] Shinji notices she is also wearing a DSS Choker, and vomits, still traumatized by Kaworu's death. Kensuke appears, covers Asuka, and cleans Shinji's vomit. They talk and Asuka expresses irritation at Shinji's inaction, but Kensuke defends him. Asuka starts using a scarf around her neck to avoid triggering Shinji again. Asuka explains to Shinji how their existence in the village is full of hardships, and force-feeds him protein bars. Later, Kensuke finds out Shinji ran away, but before leaving to retrieve him, thanks her for feeding Shinji, to which Asuka responds: "It's not like I did it for him or anything". She keeps playing with her game console during those times, but leaves it behind when she goes to watch him.
When the Wunder arrives to pickup Asuka, Shinji insists on going with her, much to her surprise, she brings him with her authority as Temporary Special Senior Major from WILLE, not before knocking him out. Mari teases Asuka over Shinji again in their shared room, now filled with books, telling her she thought Asuka didn't care for "boys his age", but Asuka expresses that Shinji "needs a mother, not a girlfriend". When the Wunder prepares to go to Antarctica, Mari and Asuka get their new plugsuits. Asuka decides she needs to talk with Shinji. Shinji admits he failed to take responsibility during the incident with the Ninth Angel. Recognizing Shinji is growing up, Asuka confesses she loved him before the incident with the Ninth Angel, but she "grew up first".[21]
In the initial stages of the Operation Yamato at Antarctica, both Asuka and Mari fights hordes of Evangelion Mark.07s by fighting as a duo, showing much more unisson than the previous fight in the NERV HQ and previous missions. Asuka leaves Mari to deal with the defensive weapons that guard Evangelion 13 as she tries to stop it using the Shutdown Override Signal Plug. As she tries to pierce 13's core, her own unit emmits its own A.T. Field stopping it. Upon this, Asuka decides to takes off her eye-patch and reveals the Ninth Angel was still inside her, she removes the Angel-Sealing Hex Pillar from her eyes and injects Angel blood into Evangelion Production Model-New 02α (JA-02 Body Assembly Cannibalized). Before she could do anything, Evangelion 13 awakens and destroys the new form hand and the Shutdown Signal too. Evangelion 13 removes her entry plug from inside the New Unit-02α. Inside the entry plug, she meets another Asuka, there she shows her collar, showing the Angel infection and the DSS Choker activated and exploded, but before it could rip her head off, the other Asuka removes her from the plugsuit, disolving her body and leaving before the DSS finished the explosion. During this, Asuka meets "her original", revealing that she is a member of the Shikinami series of clones. WILLE can't detect New Unit-02α activity and her pilot status is unknown, not long after, the Wunder is attacked by Evangelion Mark.09-A. Gendo and Evangelion 13, finally bites the entry plug where Asuka is, finally destroying the final Angel, initiating the Fourth Impact.
In a flashback to Shikinami's childhood during Instrumentality, she laments not having a parent to care for her, and Kensuke tells her it is alright. In a callback to the beach scene in The End of Evangelion, Shinji thanks Asuka for telling him she liked him, and confesses that he also liked Asuka, causing her to blush and be overwhelmed with emotion.[22][23] Asuka reappears inside one of Eva 13's entry plugs, which Shinji ejects to safety. Her plug ends up landing right outside of Kensuke's house.
In the rebuilt world, Asuka is last seen by Shinji from afar, sitting on a bench at a train station platform
- #21Atalibu
Keys: Atalibu
Profile
His body has an exotic, vaguely anthropomorphic form. Its thoracic region is very thin, and its arms are long with huge and sharp claws. Atalibu has only one eye located above his chest. It has a very wide hip. Their legs are thin at the bottom, and they widen considerably on the thighs. Its core lies exposed in the region of the solar plexus.
It has the ability to expand its A.T. Field, manipulating the properties of the environment and generating cold air around it.
- #22Azrael
Keys: Azrael
This Angel has physical characteristics that make it different from others. The shape of its body is very reminiscent of a sperm. In the lower part, it has a flagellum, which seems to be formed by several masks of Sachiel joined together. In the upper part is the structure called its "head", which has several cavities similar to craters. Its core lies exposed in the middle part of the body, between the flagellum and the head, being protected by six ribs that surround it. This Angel makes a powerful attack by manipulating the force of gravity.
- #23Barachiel
Keys: Barachiel
Barachiel bears some similarity to a large bacteria, with a yellow liquid membrane around a dark central sphere with many long internal spines going from the core to the outer edge of the membrane. What appears to be its core exists at its exact center. The only artwork of the Angel implies it is larger than some buildings, being clearly visible from Unit-01 from afar. In the scenario in which it appears, it is shown to move around by rolling and to be amphibious regularly diving into Lake Ashinoko both to avoid attack and to refill its own reserves of water. It’s primary attack is to convert the water it has absorbed into acid which is contained in its body by its A.T. Field and then sprayed out in a concentrated stream. If it’s acid reserves should run out or should it’s acid be neutralized by an alkaline solution the Angel will make its spines protrude from its skin like a sea urchin before attempting to crush its enemy by rolling over them. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion RPG: The NERV White Paper
It first appears in Tokyo-3, where, when attacked by Evangelions, it opens its A. T. Field to release a liquid that works as an acid. Depending of the "EVA Manipulation" each player has, the Evangelion will suffer the effects of the acid until rinsed it off, showcasing its strong effect.
When enough acid is released, Barachiel will sink into the depths of Lake Ashinoko, without showing any activity. Ritsuko discovers that its presence in the lake can alter the pH of the water, making it more acidic, she estimates that it will resumes its activity on October 30, 2015 by examining the water. [1]
Upon discussing with Marie Vincennes, a new plan is created to defeat the Angel: They have to create a pitfall in the middle of Tokyo-3, lure the Angel inside it and use an Evangelion to make sure it is trapped there, then use another Evangelion to neutralize its A.T. Field while fitted with D-Type Equipment to protect it from the acid. And using an injector to insert alkaline water to turn the acid into neutral water inside the body of the Angel, then use the Evangelions to fight against it. Misato decided to use another place attacked by an Angel before, preparing it to be acid resistant and Ritsuko and Maya did research the alkaline solution and the new weapon to be used. [2]
On 30 October 2015, Barachiel resumes its activities. Due to the terrorists attacks on the external power supply stations, external power isn't possible. With the help of Dr. Vincennes, new external batteries for the Evangelions were developed, giving more 5 minutes of energy in addition to the 5 minutes it already have. The operation must be completed in less than 10 minutes. If the players defeats the Angel within the conditions set by the game, they win the game, discovering who was behind the terrorist attacks
- #24Bardiel
Keys: Bardiel
Bardiel (バルディエル, Barudieru?) (Hebrew: ברדאל) is the 13th Angel, which infects Evangelion Unit-03, taking on its form and inheriting its strength. Although not considered one of the strongest Angels, Bardiel has a significant impact on the main cast, specifically Shinji, due to its actions causing NERV to make Unit-01 destroy it and leave Shinji, almost killing Toji (in the manga, actually resulting in Toji's death). It is preceded by Leliel and succeeded by Zeruel.

Bardiel's original form, when it was hiding in a thundercloud, is not seen but is assumed to be similar to the fungus-like growth on Unit-03. Somewhat similar to Ireul's control over the Simulation Bodies, the fungus-like infection spread into the former Evangelion's systems, revealing itself when the former Evangelion, having turned rogue, was activated at the secondary NERV testing facility at Matsushiro. The infected Unit-turned-angel set off an explosion, partially destroying the base, and then proceeded towards Tokyo-3.
Bardiel is capable of spreading its infection beyond the former Eva's body under its control, such as when it tried to spread to Unit-00 by seeping infected ooze out of its arm. The presence of the Entry Plug and/or the Pilot seems to be necessary for the Angel to effectively control the Unit, since Bardiel physically prevented the Entry Plug from being ejected. That the Dummy System-controlled Unit-01 went specifically for the Entry Plug (which bled after being crushed) implies that a substantial portion of the Angel, presumably the portion of the Angel in control of the former Eva, was located within the Entry Plug - the theory is further supported in Evangelion 2.0 when NERV systems identify the substance around the Entry Plug as "Core-like". Whether or not Bardiel had direct contact with Toji Suzuhara is not directly stated, although it is probable (in the Manga, it is actually shown that Toji was directly infected by the Angel).
Bardiel Appears (NGE) Bardiel Bardiel is shown to be capable of mutating its body, shown both with its ability to leak infectious ooze from it and extend its arms to amazing lengths, instantaneously increasing them to nearly twice as long as an Evangelion is tall. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Bardiel vs eva01 Bardiel attacking an unwilling Shinji. Unit-00, Unit-01 and Unit-02 were all deployed against the infected Unit-03, which had now become the 13th Angel. Bardiel succeeded in attacking and incapacitating Unit-02 when Asuka was distracted. Unit-00 succeeded in gaining a position from which it could attack from behind, but Rei hesitated to fire and possibly kill Toji, who was still trapped inside the infected Eva's entry plug. Her hesitation allowed the Angel to react to Unit-00's presence by making the infected Eva backflip and pin Unit-00 to the ground. The Bardiel-infection then began oozing out of Unit-03's arm and onto Unit-00's left arm, in an attempt to spread the infection. However, NERV acted quickly and remotely severed its left arm with internal explosive charges, leaving the still-synchronized Rei writhing in pain. Bardiel did not press its attack on the downed Unit-00 and continued to advance.
Bardiel then encountered Unit-01. With Shinji totally unwilling to fight and risk killing the human pilot trapped inside Bardiel, the Angel attacked Unit-01, knocking it down on its back before extending its mutated arms to strangle Unit-01. Pinned against a mountain, with Shinji refusing to fight despite being in danger of being killed himself, Gendo Ikari ordered that pilot control over Unit-01 be cut and the Dummy System be activated. Under the Dummy System's control, Unit-01 reached berserk-like power levels and strangled the Angel in turn, breaking Bardiel's neck in little time. With Bardiel's body crippled, the Angel was no longer capable of physical attack. The crippled Bardiel was thrown to the ground, its skull smashed in and its body ripped apart, until the Angel's entry plug was crushed, and along with it, the last of the Angel.
- #25Commander Nikolayev
Keys: Commander Nikolayev
Profile
Nikolayev is the Commander of the NERV base located in Russia.
Commander Nikolayev appears to be open and friendly, although it is unclear if this is just a facade. Initially, questions are raised about whether this attitude is genuine or simply a mask.
At first, Nikolayev decides to decline the help of NERV's Japanese headquarters regarding the Angel Iblis. The fact that he refuses external help suggests an attitude of independence and confidence in his own abilities and strategies.
Additionally, this could indicate a possible distrust in his interactions with others and the possibility that he has hidden agendas. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion RPG: The NERV White Paper
The Angel Iblis is found by the NERV Russian Branch, in an area of Siberia near the border with China. The target was moving towards East, but the visual was eventually lost. This information was relayed to NERV Japanese Branch on September 09, 2015.
At first, Nikolayev rejects NERV Japanese Branch assistance in combating the new Angel. Unfortunately, the Russian forces' attempt to contain Iblis fails miserably as the Angel's combat skills were beyond what they expected.
Depending of the players choice, a possible war could break out on Siberia with Russia willing to test modified N² weapons developed by the Russian army. If the conflict happens, Iblis will not be affected in a negative way, in fact it will become stronger.
- #26Crimson A1
Keys: Crimson A1
Profile
Hikari tells Toji that the Crimson A1 isn't Asuka, but when she returned, she was jumbled together with all kinds of different creatures due to the contact with the Ark. She believes that Asuka's mother’s soul tried to protect her by overwriting portions of the Evangelion Unit-02 Type II Allegorica with parts that were her daughter. So Asuka is still inside Crimson A1 and they must treat it like Asuka, for the reason to not let her essence fade into the body. By treating her like Asuka, she will be able to be return from the mix of different creatures fused into Crimson A1.[1] Features
History
Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA
When Asuka (piloting her Evangelion Unit-02 Type II Allegorica) got infected by some unknown ancient living organisms during her fight against Armaros on the Moon, she somehow merged with her Evangelion, resulting in the creation of a Human-Evangelion Synthesis.
The best description for her would be that of a giant woman with Evangelion-like details throughout her body, rather than an Eva per se. She sports an all-red armor, despite the fact that Asuka was using the silver-armored Unit-02 Allegorica at the time of her infection. She still uses the Allegorica, but the unit is now part of her own body, being her "hair". That means that she is now able to fly whenever she wants. She also still has an Entry Plug, even though it is virtually useless.
The main problem for this entity is her behavior. She has more or less the mentality of a baby, toying with tanks and having next to no knowledge about the world.
She was nicknamed "Crimson A1" by NERV Japan, much to Hikari's dismay. The latter told the others to call her "Asuka" in order to return her to her former human self. After a failed attempt to bring back Asuka to her normal self, she was absorbed into another dimension.[2]
She would later come back as an enemy as the Torwartα1'. The latter has virtually the same appearance as Crimson A1 but with a black and a much darker red color scheme. She also possesses a back-mounted plate similar to those of the two Torwart units.
- #27Diemay Angel
Keys: Diemay Angel
Diemay Angel is a large, monstrous white-winged Angel designed by Satou "Diemay" Daimei of Tokyo, a fan who won a contest wherein original Angel designs were submitted to GAINAX by viewers. The favoured submission would appear in an original illustration by Yoh Yoshinari in the March 1996 issue of Monthly Animage[1]. This Angel has not appeared in any other media as of yet.
Profile
Diemay's sketch includes the following notes:
Angel's height: 100m. The Core is on its forehead. The projection on the forehead is the Angel's "Charm Point". The first pair of arms contain "Deutron Rifles", which are, according to Diemay, "more powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evangelion". The second pair bear claws of some sort.
- #28Eighth Angel
Keys: Eighth Angel
Profile
The Eighth Angel has undergone a massive redesign with various stages, and the fight itself is more fleshed out. History
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
It starts out in space as a giant ball with eyes similar to Leliel's shadow. NERV is unable to pinpoint the place where it will fall, it uses its A.T. Field to alter the light and velocity while falling. Then, when it is about to land, it begins to resemble its TV anime counterpart, only this version is larger and has feathery spikes trailing it. When Shinji reaches the point where the angel will touch the ground, he uses Unit-01's A.T. Field to stop its descent, and a humanoid body comes out of the central eye and pierces Unit-01's hands, hurting Shinji too. Its core is also movable in great velocity and avoids attacks from Unit-02 until Rei in Unit-00' is able to physically grab hold of it and stop it (greatly hurting herself in the process). Unit-02 uses both progressive knives to damage the core, but only after using a knee attack to shove one of the knives clear through the core it is finally destroyed. When defeated, it retracts its eye shaped feathers like an insect and explodes into a massive geyser of bloody liquid and floods a great portion of the city.
Development
Among the production crew, the Angel was nicknamed the "Falling Angel". The overall concept is based on how the Angel was depicted in episode 12 of the TV series but was revamped incorporating new ideas. Takashi Watanabe first presented numerous ideas on the basic structure of the Angel and how its shape would go through numerous transitions. At this stage, the Angel design was more organic in nature, but Mahiro Maeda introduced the idea of introducing surrealist elements in the design, and thus emphasis was placed on artistic aesthetics. Maeda proposed to have the sphere blossom open as it did in the film and how numerous humanoid figures would appear once the trumpets of the Apocalypse sound off. The sequence featuring the humanoid center of the Angel locking grips with Unit-01 was created using hand drawn animation. The Unit-01 was created using hand drawn animation. The humanoid section of the Angel was first designed by Yoshitoh Asari and then Takeshi Honda refined the design to befit the needs of animation production. This was an Angel that was the culmination of numerous individual's contributions. Representing a huge Angel sized over several kilometers across was very difficult to do in CG and many sections, such as the organic physiological reaction of the Angel, [its "death twitch"], had to be redone over and over again.[1] Trivia
It was mainly designed by Mahiro Maeda, he redesigned the common parts between Sahaquiel and Eighth Angel. Hideaki Anno did the little angels parts and Takeshi Honda did the final humanoid part.
- #29Fifth Angel
Keys: Fifth Angel
Development
The Angel has received a heavily revised design, prepared by Hideaki Anno and Yoshitoh Asari and developed into the 3D CG model used in the film. The design, while still closely resembling the one from the TV show, reincorporates several elements from previously-unused concept sketches by Asari, such as more intricately segmented arms, mouth with mandibles and "fangs", and an exposed spine in the thoracic cavity to which ten legs attach.[1] Other changes include the redder color (with a glittering purple abdomen), a hollowed-out abdominal segment, and a Second Angel-like "face" near the head's attachment point. During the film, the legs are in constant motion. The arm-like things on the spine below the core are highly animate, constantly moving in, out, and around a bit.
When the Fifth Angel dies, the core puffs up and the whole Angel explodes in a rain of blood-like fluid, leaving behind only the whips impaled in Unit-01. Trivia
The Fifth Angel was designed by Yoshitoh Asari, who also designed Sachiel and Zeruel in the original TV series. The official Japanese termed for Fifth Angel's energy-whips/energy-tentacles is Hikari no Muchi (Whips of Light?). Fifth Angel's design may be based on Dr. Poole's space suit from 2001: A Space OdysseyWP.[citation needed] In the Fifth Angel's design seems to have multiple stubby legs that resembles cilia at the bottom of their long body, which coincides with the fact that Planarian also have cilia on their underside for mobility.
- #30Fourth Angel
Keys: Fourth Angel
Profile
Fourth Angel's body is a tall and thin humanoid body, slightly larger than an Evangelion, which functions on both land and in water. Its proportions do not match those of a human; its arms are long enough to reach below its knees and its legs and feet are elongated and disproportionate. It lacks a proper humanoid head and neck, but like other Angels, contains a core in the center of its solar plexus. Its head, barely mobile, appeared to primarily be made of bone and is structured much like a bird's, even having a long beak. After the Angel regenerates from the N² mine, a second head emerges from its body, with a shorter beak than the first, pushing the first one slightly upwards. Fourth Angel has red irises, which are able to be seen deep within its head in the eye sockets. Fourth Angel possesses blood of a bluish-purple color, making it unique among Angels for whom blood has been observed.
Unusual among Angels, Fourth Angel possesses a respiration system based in the thighs and crotch, breathing in through gills in the thighs and exhaling through a set of nostril in the crotch area. Said gills also serve as an underwater propulsion system. The Angel's natural weaponry consist of two lance-like bone structures that extend from its forearms and are shown to be able to be energized to increase their destructive capability. These are physical structures that serve as the Angel's ulna or outer arm bone. After the Angel regenerates from the N² Mine attack, it develops the ability to fire a long-range energy blast from the eyes of its second face, which results in crucifix-shaped spikes of energy. While not a flight-capable Angel itself, Fourth Angel demonstrates the ability to use its own A.T. Field to enhance its jumping ability to great lengths. Fourth Angel is also capable of altering its body shape and muscle mass, increasing it when under strain. As a last resort, it can wrap itself into a ball around its opponent and self-destruct. History
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Fourth Angel's Halo (Rebuild) The Fourth Angel Fourth Angel's role in Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone is largely the same as its role in the TV series.
Its design is almost identical with few apparent modifications; however, some minor differences can be seen. Most obviously, when making its A.T. Field-assisted jump, a large halo appears briefly above its head. Additionally, upon revealing its second face, casting its A.T. Field, and prior to dying, the eyes of Fourth Angel's second face glow a bright red. Another minor design change includes a blood color change from blue to red to correspond with the other Angels.
It is first seen attacking Tokyo-3, the Angel makes its way towards the fortified city and engages in combat with Evangelion Test Type-01 during its first operational mission.
Evangelion: Hakata Angel Attack Alternative
The Fourth Angel is confirmed near the coast of the Genkai Sea, then it attacks the NERV Fukuoka branch of “New Fukuoka City”. As the city defenses fires at it, without causing any damage, Asuka appears in her Evangelion Production Model-02 holding a N² missile and charges towards the Angel, but is stopped by the Angel's A.T. Field. Even with the boosters of the missile working, it is not enough and they are halted, causing it to explode, lauching the Evangelion away as it crashed into a building.
Rei Ayanami and Evangelion Proto Type-00' is sent to the battle via the underground tunnels. There she grabs the Positron Cannon and fires at the Angel, breaking the A.T. Field and hurting it. Not long after this, a new face emerges from the Fourth Angel and launches a beam at Rei. Shinji Ikari and Evangelion Test Type-01, holding the Enchanted Shield of Virtue protects her. Misato decides to retreat and orders to destroy the bars holding the city block into the underground. However the Fourth Angel moves quickly in and gets hold of Unit-01 and starts trying to pierce its head with a lance-like bone. Unit-01 reactivates itself and breaks the attacking bone with their teeth. It starts entering the process of Pseudo-Awakening, rising to the skies initiating an Impact event. The Angel launches a beam again but is stopped by Unit-01's A.T. Field, it attempts to get closer in and keeps attacking Unit-01 as the EVA's Field still holds the attack.
Mari and Evangelion Production Model Custom Type-08β appears holding the Spear of Longinus launches it at the dual head of the Fourth Angel, making it fall limp as if it was dead. Unit-01 removes the Spear and pierce the core of the Angel, it quickly recovers and cover Unit-01's body, expanding and shortly exploding and causing a cross-shaped rainbow, indicating the demise of the Angel and also stoping the Impact event
- #31Kōzō Fuyutsuki
Keys: Kōzō Fuyutsuki
AFFILIATION(S) NERV RANK/TITLE Deputy Commander AGE 59 (born 04 September 1956[1]) HEIGHT 189cm BLOOD TYPE AB KNOWN RELATIVES Former teacher of Yui Ikari Gendo Ikari (Employer)
Kozo Fuyutsuki (冬月ふゆ月つき コウゾウ, Fuyutsuki Kōzō?) is a fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. He is second-in-command of NERV HQ and Gendo Ikari's right hand man. As Deputy Commander of NERV, Fuyutsuki frequently takes command of situations at the base whenever Gendo is away on business. Gendo also tends to unload the more mundane work, such as town council meetings, paperwork, and the like, onto Fuyutsuki.
Profile
Prior to Second Impact, Fuyutsuki was a professor of metaphysical biology at Kyoto University. While there, he met the young bioengineer student Yui Ikari and became her "sensei". The exact nature of their academic relationship is unknown, although they were close and spent time together off campus. Fuyutsuki was smitten with "Yui-kun" from the start, although he kept this entirely to himself.
Not long after, a man named Gendo Rokubungi, who was being held at the Kyoto Prefecture Police Department after a bar fight, asked to be released into Fuyutsuki's custody. He complied, although he found Rokubungi distasteful. Yui later introduced Gendo to Fuyutsuki formerly, and then, during a hike, revealed that she was actually dating him—news that left her sensei visibly disconcerted despite efforts to conceal his own reaction.
This was a strong suggestion that Fuyutsuki was attracted to Yui Ikari, as well as being impressed with her work. At the very least, Fuyutsuki appeared to share some of Yui’s admiration for humanity. In Episode 12, during a philosophical debate with Gendo at the South Pole Fuyutsuki stated that he’d "prefer a world where people live, no matter how stained with sin". Also, he has said that he agrees with Yui’s ideas more than SEELE’s.
But on a personal level, Fuyutsuki was said to want little to do with people in his earlier life [2]
Fuyutsuki survived Second Impact, but his career as a university professor came to an end. In 2002, he "set up shop" at the ruins of Toyohashi (in Aichi Prefecture, east of Kyoto) as an unlicensed doctor to compensate for the shortage being experienced everywhere. Fuyutsuki was selected to be part of the United Nations' official investigatory expedition to the South Pole (on the basis on an anonymous recommendation by Gendo). This eventually leads him back to Gendo Ikari, director of the Artificial Evolution Laboratory. During this time he also finds Gendo and Yui to be married, and with child. Although Kōzō's inquiry is cut short, the incident and it's subsequent cover-up becomes an obsession for him, and he continues to investigate on his own.
He then confronted Gendo at the Artificial Evolution Laboratory with his findings. Gendo, unmoved by Fuyutsuki's threats of taking the information public, took him down into the GeoFront and the under-construction facilities. Upon showing him the prototype Eva unit, he invited Fuyutsuki to "join us in creating a new genesis for Mankind".
Fuyutsuki subsequently joined Gehirn, though it would appear that he had little choice in the matter. He confides in Yui that he was under threat of erasure by SEELE for knowing too much, and "working for the enemy" would provide a means to avoid that fate.[3]
During the present of the series, Fuyutsuki is nearly always seen in the company of Gendo Ikari, but it is clear that their alliance is one of convenience and business. The two men do achieve some unity in that both are interested in seeing Yui again, however. It is unclear whether Gendo or Yui knew of Fuyutsuki’s attraction to her.
At NERV, Fuyutsuki projects considerably less harsh of a personality than Gendo, confirmed when, after the disaster that was the initial attack on Israfel, Ritsuko Akagi told Misato Katsuragi that if Gendo hadn’t been elsewhere and the (still very angry) Fuyutsuki wasn’t in full charge of the operation, Misato would have been fired already. His usually deadpan observations often provide a source of very dry humour. His exchanges with Gendo often serve as a conscience stimulator for the Commander, often leading him to reveal a little of his plans to the audience. He is tall—taller than Gendo—and always wears a dark reddish-brown buttonless uniform; this coupled with his stern yet calm, stoic demeanor makes him an imposing figure. If he is in command during combat, however, he projects a much more active style than Gendo's utter calm. Relationships
Gendo Ikari
Fuyutsuki does not particularly like Gendo. His history with him, as detailed above (and in Episode 21), is rather rocky. It seems, partially by his own admission, that he follows Gendo's plans not only for the sake of humanity but also for Yui's. He respects Gendo's ability to lead and persuade despite, in return, bearing the brunt of the "trivial duties" at NERV. Gendo respects Fuyutsuki enough to leave him in charge of NERV in his absence, or when he needs to deal with an issue personally. He alone appears to be aware of the extent Gendo's intentions with the Human Instrumentality Project, though he himself is not fully in the know. His prodding of Gendo often results in the latter revealing a marginal detail or two to the audience. Other than Gendo—though as a result of Gendo's influence—Fuyutsuki is the only one of the NERV staff to have had dealings with SEELE before the advent of Kaji and the interrogation of Ritsuko.
Yui Ikari
Fuyutsuki was smitten with Yui from the day he met her; though the attraction seemed purely platonic and academic at first, it is implied that he developed feelings for her. She had submitted a paper to him for review, and in their discussion afterward he seemed dismayed that Yui would choose to start a family and interrupt what was promising to be a brilliant career. He was even more perturbed when she started dating Gendo Rokubungi, of whom he did not think highly, and could not contain his surprise (and displeasure) when Yui revealed they were to marry. Yui considered Fuyutsuki her sensei, and while it is unknown how much she knew of SEELE's intentions, she was pleased when he joined Gehirn. Her last words, regarding Shinji, were spoken to her sensei. During Instrumentality, Rei/Lilith turns into Yui, and he embraces her before being reverted to LCL.
The Evangelion pilots
Fuyutsuki spends little time interacting with the pilots themselves. He is aware of Shinji's story, and perhaps due to the boy being Yui's son he harbours something of a soft spot for him (though almost never outwardly). He is aware of Gendo's attachment to Rei, and due to his involvement in the Human Instrumentality Project he is well aware of Rei's origins, though they almost never interact outside of combat situations. Fuyutsuki often comically cringes at Asuka and Shinji's public bickering as he feels they are humiliating NERV; Asuka herself felt humiliated during her and Shinji's dressing down by Fuyutsuki after the first failed sortie against Israfel. He is never shown to have interacted with Toji or Kaworu, though he too appeared to know about Kaworu's provenance.
Co-workers
The NERV staff respect Fuyutsuki, not just for his leadership and stoicism, but also for his humanity in contrast to Gendo's cold indifference. He is less severe than Gendo—something Misato turns out to be grateful for after the first attempt against Israfel failed; Ritsuko comments that had it not been for the "lucky circumstance" that Gendo was away and Fuyutsuki in charge, Misato would have been fired. Ritsuko is the only other NERV staff member who is in the know about much of the Human Instrumentality Project, the secrets of NERV, and has access to Terminal Dogma; as such, she shares some of Fuyutsuki's knowledge and impressions. He always appears to keep an eye on Ritsuko's experiments (as in Episode 11). She, like Misato, usually defers to him. Maya Ibuki comments to Ritsuko on the stoic way Fuyutsuki and Gendo are taking the rising heat after NERV HQ loses power (and thus air conditioning); she is unaware that Fuyutsuki has his feet in a bucket of water.
- #32Kōzō Fuyutsuki/Rebuild
Keys: Kōzō Fuyutsuki/Rebuild
Kozo Fuyutsuki (冬月ふゆ月つきコウゾウ, Fuyutsuki Kōzō?) is a fictional character from the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. He is second-in-command of NERV HQ and Gendo Ikari's right hand man. As Deputy Commander of NERV, Fuyutsuki frequently takes command of situations at the base whenever Gendo is away on business.
Profile
Kōzō Fuyutsuki is probably the oldest figure in NERV. He is a tall man with a long face and hollow cheeks. His gray hair gives his already advanced age, but in the past he had brown hair. Other signs of his age, the wrinkles appearing on her face. Since joining NERV, Kōzō usually wears his Vice Commander uniform, a brown jacket closed, with a rigid stand-up collar, and decorated with a dark gray triangle with NERV written in green. He wears with matching pants and black shoes.
After the 14 years since the Near Third Impact, his appearance is of a even more older man, still wearing the same attire, but with less hair with more protuberant receding hairlines and sharper wrinkles in his face. His eyebrows also change the shape, now being more bushy in the external end.
Fuyutsuki's personality is similar to that of the TV series, but is less prominent. In the Rebuild movie series, Fuyutsuki is rarely seen interacting with the Evangelion pilots like he does in Neon Genesis Evangelion, however, he is often seen beside his boss: Gendo Ikari, commenting or questioning about Gendo's intentions or actions. Fuyutsuki in the Rebuild continuity is also keen of Shogi, a japanese strategy game. He invites Shinji for a game of shogi and uses it as a chance to tell him about the fate of his mother and her association with Unit-01. History
In the first two films of Rebuild, Fuyutsuki has a similar role to the one in the original series, remaining in the shadow of Gendo and simply commenting on the interactions of the latter with SEELE, Misato, or Shinji. He alongside Gendo Ikari, goes to the Tabgha Base wearing the Type OMM7L NERV Extravehicular Mobility Unity, in this mission, they observe the refitting of one of the Adams into the Evangelion Mark.06. Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo
Fuyutsuki first appears to discuss with Gendo about SEELE's silence, telling him that he'll go along with his plans for Yui's sake. He tells Gendo about Kaworu showing Shinji the outside and his actions, questioning Gendo about how he won't allow his son to know anything about him.
He comes into direct contact with Shinji, where they both play shogi and he's shown to be an experienced player. He shows a picture of Yui to Shinji, explaining what happened to her, the origins of Rei, and imparted a bit of the truth about his father. His words at the end suggest that revealing the truth about Yui and Rei was part of Gendo's plans.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time
During the final confrontation between NERV and WILLE, Fuyutsuki singlehandedly commands the NHG warships, seemingly with little regard for his own safety, ignoring any protection against the L-Density of the bridge. After Mari forces her way onto the bridge, Fuyutsuki acknowledges her as Mari Iscariot. As she leaves, content to his own fate, Fuyutsuki explodes into LCL.
- #33Gaghiel
Keys: Gaghiel
NAME MEANING Roaring Beast of God SYMBOLISM The Angel of the Fish NUMBER 6th
Gaghiel has a very large body, matching in size to Iowa-class battleships (which are about 270 meters long), and easily overshadowing an Eva. It has very large jaws, filled with sharp serrated teeth. Its core is also located in its mouth. Its skin is tannish in color, with a black outline. It is a strong and durable angel, destroying many of the UN Pacific fleets ships with its body. It also has a face-plate yet again resembling the one Sachiel grows after being attacked by an N2 mine. However, it does not generate a visible A.T. Field, though it uses it to some degree, as it is not damaged by the firepower of the fleet.
Gaghiel literally means Roaring Beast of God. It is named after the Angel of the Fish. His appearance resembles the
Leviathan , a gigantic mythological sea monster, that appears in the book of Job and is usually compared with the crocodile or the whale. It´s sometimes associated with Lucifer, the fallen angel. ADVERTISEMENT
History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gaghiel vs eva Gaghiel attacks Evangelion Unit-02. Gaghiel attacked the UN Pacific fleet as it was delivering Unit-02 and (secretly) the preserved embryonic Adam to NERV. Gaghiel was searching for the Adam embryo, but because the presence of the embryo was secret (apparently even from SEELE), NERV officially reported that Gaghiel was drawn by Unit-02. It managed to damage or destroy almost one third of the UN's combined fleet.
Gaghiel fought with Unit-02, piloted jointly by Asuka Langley Sohryu and Shinji Ikari in their first battle together. Asuka brashly challenges Gaghiel in Unit-02 wearing only B-type equipment (unsuited for marine combat). Gaghiel leaps from the water and onto Unit-02 and the ship's deck. A miscalculation by Asuka makes Unit-02 step onto a flight deck elevator which collapses, throwing the Eva and the Angel into the water, where Asuka and Shinji find themselves immobilized. The Angel bites down on them, trapping them in its jaws. Misato hatches a plan, and Unit-02 forces the Angel's mouth open (though only with Asuka and Shinji working and thinking in unison), allowing a pair of scuttled battleships to lodge in its mouth (knocking out most of its teeth in the process) and fire (via remote control) at the Angel's core, then self-destruct inside the Angel, causing it to inflate and explode, killing it (Although, judging by the footage, the angel itself exploded (from the shells), and not the battleships, which only stuck out of the mouth and which were not in the center of the explosion).

Gendo Ikari (碇ゲンドウ, Ikari Gendō?) is a fictional character and the main antagonist of the Evangelion franchise. He is Shinji Ikari's father and the Commander of NERV. He played a major role in the research and construction of the Evangelions and the Human Instrumentality Project.
Appearance
Gendo has an appearance of a typical middle-aged man. He has a hair shape similar to Shinji's, but with a beard. His usual attire is a NERV black commander's uniform with gold lines sewn on the edges of the jacket, and green triangular identification pieces sewn at the sleeves and the necklace. Beneath the uniform, Gendo wears a red sweater. Other than his commander's uniform, he rarely wears other outfits.
Gendo wears a pair of white gloves to conceal his severely-burnt hands caused by the Unit-00 berserk incident. Gendo also wears a pair of glasses with squared lenses during that time, but later on changes to round-shaped-lenses glasses with a red or brown filter, which reflects light on large screens. Profile
In NERV, Gendo is responsible for the research done on the Evas and the Human Instrumentality Project. He is the father of the Third Child, Shinji Ikari. At the start of the series, he is the only person having an effective connection to Rei Ayanami.
Gendo is a brilliant scientist and politician (the master of puppets in the series) who works diligently for his organization; however, he is an extremely cold and distant father towards his son and has no qualms about using and discarding people to achieve his goals.[2]
Gendo does not seem to have any sort of interest in contrast with other NERV crew members, but has a habit of crossing his hands whenever he sits down, hiding his mouth. He is mostly calm and does not react visibly in alarming situations. He rarely smiles or laughs, but is however seen occasionally smiling at Rei, and one time during the battle against Sachiel. Personality
"Gendo is the type of person who can see & think about the welfare of an organization as a whole. In other words, he'd do anything to succeed. He takes drastic and extreme measures, by fair means or foul, or by hook or by crook, in order to accomplish his own purpose. In some ways he's mean, he hardly cares about Shinji."[3]
His last lines in The End of Evangelion reveal his regret and the true motivations for his ruthless behavior. He intended to use Third Impact to bring his wife Yui Ikari back to life. However, he realizes that his efforts are in vain and that he ignored the real wishes of Yui. She intended to bring about a brighter future for their son Shinji, whom Gendo has sacrificed in order to bring her back. In essence, Yui's dreams and principles were violated to resurrect her. Shortly after, Unit-01 is shown grasping Gendo in its hand before decapitating him, clearly rejecting Gendo's actions (however, this death sequence is questionable, due to its surreal appearance - though it is quite possible that he was turned to LCL like everyone else, the vision of Eva-01 being just a manifestation of his self-loathing). As he's dying, Gendo admits he avoided Shinji because he was just as afraid of hurting him as Shinji was of him, and thought it was better to do nothing at all. Taking into account other actions he did before, like faint praise of Shinji and attempt to spare him using the Dummy Plug system, Gendo is shown to still care for Shinji, but is extremely hesitant and insecure about it, and prefers to keep the distance between them in order to avoid being hurt. In this manner, he is very similar to his son. A common interpretation is to see Gendo as Shinji's negative adult mirror, with Ryoji Kaji as a more positive model. Similarly, Ritsuko and Misato are mirrors for Asuka, as is their respective relationships. Before being decapitated, Gendo asks for Shinji's forgiveness. Background
Young Gendo Young Gendo Ikari. Gendo Ikari was born as Gendo Rokubungi (六分儀, meaning sextant?).[4] Though virtually nothing is known about his childhood or young adulthood, there are vague hints that he may have grown up in a traumatic or emotionally straining environment. During study, he met Yui Ikari, with whom he started a relationship, and Professor Kōzō Fuyutsuki, with whom he became friends. Many who knew him thought that the only reason for his and Yui's relationship was her connections to SEELE; however, over the course of the series and films, it becomes clear that his connection to Yui went far deeper. He and Yui were married at the beginning of the 21st century, wherein he changed his surname to Ikari. (This is the practice of mukoyoshi, where a man is adopted into a family through marriage in order to carry on the family's surname. It should also be noted that this detail is not revealed until later in the series.) In 2001 their son Shinji was born. They both worked together at Gehirn, from which Gendo became the leader. After the failed activation test of Unit-01 and Yui's apparent death during this event, Gendo became very cold and distant (even towards Shinji, whom he sent to live with a teacher and had very little contact with). Gendo also entered into affairs with both Naoko Akagi and, later, her daughter Ritsuko, seemingly casting doubt on his commitment to Yui; however, it is implied that Gendo was simply using them to achieve the means to accomplish Third Impact. Thanks to Yui's connection to SEELE, he also came in contact with the organization and started to help them with their plans for the Second Impact.
A massive malfunction during the first activation test for Unit-00 caused the Eva to go "berserk." To prevent Rei from being seriously injured, the entry plug was ejected, and Gendo pried the plug's overheated door open with his bare hands to extract Rei. His hands have severe scarring because of this, and he is never shown without wearing gloves (except in episode 5, when he briefly takes them off and Shinji sees they are burned, and Ritsuko explains why).
Although Gendo pretends to follow SEELE's orders without question, he has his own agenda and tries to out-manipulate the committee. His final outspoken rebellion towards SEELE comes from his desire to initiate Third Impact under his complete control. He implants Adam's embryo in his hand (only shown in Death and Rebirth and the Director's Cut Edition) and tries to merge with Rei to achieve this purpose.
Gendo abandoned his son, Shinji, when he was a toddler and throughout the series, he was uninterested, distant, and harsh towards Shinji. In the movie, The End of Evangelion, Gendo and Rei are in Central Dogma in front of Lilith. He asks Rei to lower the A.T. Field so he can see Yui, his deceased wife again. Rei is supposedly made from some parts of Yui and when her A.T. field is lowered she and Gendo will dissolve into the "soup of life" (or "primordial goo") uniting Gendo with the pieces of Yui. She denies him saying, "I will not be your puppet" and cuts off part of his hand into her body. Despite his want to be reunited with his wife, he has affairs with Naoko Akagi, the developer of the Magi, and her daughter Ritsuko Akagi, head scientist of NERV. There is no love in these relationships and Gendo only does it to gain their favor or have them keep secrets.
In The End of Evangelion, Rei finally defies Gendo forwardly and separates with him (after absorbing Adam) to merge with Lilith and start Instrumentality on her own. Seeing that all his plans to be reunited with Yui have come to nothing, Gendo begs Rei to return to him, she refuses. After Instrumentality is started, Gendo confronts specters of the various Reis as well as Kaworu and Yui herself. Gendo confesses that he is afraid of the "invisible bonds" formed by those around him, and that he was afraid to confront his son after Yui's death. A vision of Unit-01, with much of its armor missing, (the real Unit-01 is at that moment within the Tree of Life, and still fully armored) is seen holding Gendo in much the same manner as Kaworu in Episode 24. Gendo states that "...this is my retribution", and the spectral Unit-01 bites off his torso as he utters his final words: "Forgive me, Shinji." The camera then shifts back to Terminal Dogma, where the lower half of Gendo's body is seen, still standing, with his torso severed.[5] History

The End of Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion manga
Gendo in the manga Gendo as he appears in the manga. Gendo's role and overall character in the manga is pretty much the same, with only a few differences. Gendo is shown to be more antagonistic towards Shinji than in the anime, first shown when he calls his son a "coward" when he refuses to pilot Unit-01. Later, while Shinji is recovering, Gendo checks on Rei in the hospital, but barely acknowledges his own son.
Gendo activates Unit-01's Dummy System in the battle against Bardiel, resulting in the death of Tōji Suzuhara, the pilot of the possessed Unit-03 (an event exclusive to the manga; Tōji survives in the anime but is left horribly crippled and missing a leg). After Shinji uses Unit-01 to damage the cage, Gendo calls on Kaji to bring Shinji to his office. Shinji asks his father if he has anything to say to him, which Gendo does not answer. Shinji's responds to this by trying to punch him, but is held back by Kaji; Shinji screams that he never wants to see him again. Gendo's response to this is the same as in the anime, to have Shinji removed from NERV's records.
When Zeruel attacks and Rei fails to activate Unit-01, he heads down to the cage to try and get the Dummy System to work, which proves futile. Gendo, in his first act of distress, frantically asks why Unit-01 (and by extension, Yui) is rejecting him, to which Shinji's picture appears on the screens. This, and Shinji's sudden reappearance in the cage to do battle against Zeruel, surprises Gendo.
Just as in the anime, SEELE begins to doubt Gendo's trustworthiness after Unit-01 absorbs Zeruel's S² Engine. This results in them sending Kaworu Nagisa in order to spy on Gendo and NERV. Gendo increasingly defies SEELE while he continues to further his plan to take control of the Human Instrumentality Project. He later swallows Adam instead having it grafted to his hand.
During the invasion of NERV by the JSSDF, Gendo saves Shinji by projecting an AT Field from his left hand, which now has Adam embedded within. Gendo reveals the extent of his madness, telling Shinji that he has never loved him and that he used to feel jealous of the attention Yui gave to him, as well as detailing his plan to use Third Impact to become God and destroy humanity while reuniting with Yui. Gendo asks Shinji to pilot Unit-01 once again to aid in his plans, since Shinji has experienced loss and can now understand Gendo. Misato appears, however, and urges Shinji not to listen to his father.
After aiding Shinji and Misato's escape from the JSSDF, Gendo descends into Terminal Dogma to convince Rei to merge with Adam. As in The End of Evangelion, he shoots Ritsuko when she attempts to self-destruct NERV Headquarters to stop them. However, much to Gendo's surprise and anguish, Rei rejects him and destroys Adam, merging with Lilith without absorbing him. After Rei/Lilith ascends from Terminal Dogma, Gendo is shot through the neck by a still-living Ritsuko in her final act. A vision of Yui confronts him as he lays dying, asking him to remember the first time he felt love for Shinji. After confessing that he has only caused his son pain, Gendo remembers Shinji as a newborn baby—the first time he felt love for him, and realizes that what Yui wanted (through the Evangelion project) was a better world for them to live in as a family. He thus redeems his soul in his final moments.
Shinji Ikari Raising Project
In Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji Ikari Raising Project, Gendo is shown in a humorous light, much unlike his anime counterpart. His antics, oftentimes embarrassing Shinji, often end with him being hit by Yui. During a blackout at NERV, he shined his torch in a scary way, which promptly earned him a smack from Yui. Another time, Gendo is reading a newspaper when Yui asks him if he told Shinji something (like she told Gendo to do). Gendo's response was to sweat and shake nervously and the scene ends with the sound effect of Yui hitting Gendo. Gendo is also shown to be a rather charismatic figure during this time, moving several members of NERV staff (notably all male) to aid with the "pedaling for power" plan.
Also, the perceived "father-son rivalry" between Gendo and Shinji in Evangelion fandom is parodied here, as both men decided to "compete" to see who could pedal the fastest. The contest was actually a way to generate electricity for NERV HQ, which had been hit by a blackout. The incident also pays homage to the original anime, where Gendo helps in the manual launching of the EVAs against the invading Angel. Interestingly, both Fuyutsuki and Rei were shown to put in their share of work before dropping out due to fatigue.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gakuen Datenroku
At the start of the manga, Gendo is stated to be overseas, having left Shinji in the care of Ryoji Kaji. About halfway through the story, Gendo is revealed to be behind NERV, the organization fighting the Angels.[6] Shinji notes that something is amiss, as Gendo acts far colder and distant than he did when Shinji was a boy. At the story's climax, it is revealed that this Gendo is a doppelganger from an alternate universe, who came to this one as part of an ill-fated attempt to replace his universe's Yui following her death. After discovering that this universe's Gendo had been killed in a lab accident (the same one that resulted in Yui becoming trapped in the Tree of Y'ggdrasil), the alternate Gendo took his place.
He initially plans to have Rei Ayanami take Yui's place in the tree (thus freeing her), but the plan changes after Rei becomes fond of Shinji and refuses to give up her own existence. Gendo shoots Rei for her betrayal and attempts to use Shinji as a replacement, but is ultimately killed by falling debris from Y'ggdrasil, implied to have been caused by Yui.

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Gendo's character does not appear to have gone any significant change in Rebuild of Evangelion, he shows no signs of emotional attachment to Shinji and remains being cold and not very talkative, always followed by Fuyutsuki. In Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Gendo appears to be even colder than normal, as he simply watches when Shinji's entry plug boils during the 6th Angel's attack, and immediately orders the replacement of Eva-01's pilot by Rei when Shinji fails to annihilate the 6th Angel as a sign of distrust, only to cancel this idea after Misato's plead. However, he appears to be showing signs of change towards his son in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, which is perhaps the most noteworthy part throughout the Rebuild tetralogy.
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
In the beginning of Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Gendo and Shinji have a short conversation during their visit at Yui Ikari's grave. When Gendo is about to leave, although Shinji does not board the Commander's aircraft with him, Shinji tells his father that he is happy that father is able to stay with him for a while, followed by Gendo's unobvious reaction. After the 8th Angel's attack, Gendo, who is at the Moon with Fuyutsuki, complements Shinji for defeating the 8th Angel through telecommunication means. He also accepts the idea of going to Rei's dinner party along with Shinji and is even about to pick him up before being informed the Eva-03 incident. Gendo expresses a bit of worry towards Shinji when the 9th Angel strangles Eva-01, questioning Shinji about his hesitation and telling him that "You will die (if you don't fight back)". Concerning Shinji's situation, he orders the use of the Dummy System. A more cannibalistic Eva-01 tears down Eva-03 and severely injures Asuka (which apparently Gendo is not aware of). After this incident, the relationship between Gendo and Shinji breaks down completely, as in the TV series, erasing all related data about Shinji from NERV and permanently forbidding him to pilot Unit-01, with the Dummy System as a replacement.
Gendo reacts visibly during the 10th Angel incident when Shinji calls him "Father" once again and pleaded him to let him pilot Unit-01. He watches, satisfied, as Unit-01 begins turning into a godlike being, knowing that his plans are soon to come to fruition. Gendo affirmed to Fuyutsuki that they knew Shinji and Rei were capable of awakening Unit-01 and starting Near Third Impact.
Gendo and Fuyutsuki seem somewhat closer and more united in their approach to their common goal. Furthermore, Gendo does not appear to have a relationship with Ritsuko like in NGE, as of Evangelion 2.0.
Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo
In Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, Gendo has become a even colder person, only briefing Shinji in the ruins of NERV, about how his plan to use Evangelion 13 to achieve his goal, however, he ironically welcomes his son with kindness by letting him in front of Evangelion 13's incubation chamber. Gendo now wears a visor similar to that of Keel Lorenz, and can be seen speaking to the disembodied Lilith head at former-NERV headquarters about fulfilling the contract with Lilith later on. After Lilith's body is destroyed following the freeing of the two Longinus spears, the head explodes and covers Gendo in blood, who tells Fuyutsuki it's time to begin (his plan). Finally, Gendo appears once again speaking to the SEELE monoliths once the Fourth Impact has initiated and thanks them for their role of guiding humanity so far, while Fuyutsuki shuts them off one by one. Gendo appears one last time after the aftermath of Fourth Impact, discussing with Fuyutsuki about how most of it went according to SEELE's scenario, but thanks to them EVA-13 awakened with the death of Kaworu Nagisa. He mentions that Misato's actions were also expected, suggesting that everything is happening according to his plan.
Fuyutsuki ambiguously states that Gendo is paying every price for this, including his own soul, during his conversation with Shinji. Kaworu refers to Gendo as "King of Lilin".
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time
In Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time, Gendo and Fuyutsuki are steering the Black Moon towards Antarctica. Fuyutsuki wonders if Gendo made Shinji suffer the same loss as him through the original Rei. Arriving at the epicenter of Second Impact, they attempt to restart Evangelion 13. When Wille and the Wunder arrive, Evangelion 13 manages to destroy and absorbs New Unit-02α and Asuka with it. Gendo is in the NHG Erbsünde ship restraining the Wunder when Misato and Ritsuko confront him. Ritsuko shoots him, but he's unaffected, thanks to using Nebuchadnezzar's Key to surpass his humanity. Gendo explains the purpose of the Impacts, and sets about starting the Human Instrumentality Project, entering Evangelion 13.
Inside a Minus Space he fights Shinji inside Unit-01. Shinji appeals to Gendo to stop and talk. Gendo shows Shinji an Evangelion Imaginary, a Black Lilith predicted by the theories of Dr. Katsuragi. Misato sacrifices herself to hold back Gendo's "Additional Impact". Shinji finally succeeds in talking to Gendo inside a train. Shinji's present-day train transitions to a Showa-era train as he speaks to Gendo, and he and sees a vision of Gendo's past experiences and life, and how Yui's loss traumatized him. When Shinji decides to restart the world, he is then pushed out of Unit-01 by his mother Yui, and they are embraced from behind by Gendo in Evangelion 13. Gendo destroys all of the Evangelion Units with the Spear of Gaius piercing Unit-01 and Evangelion 13 to continue the Neon Genesis.

Godzilla vs. Evangelion: The Real 4-D
A government observation team tours the advanced city aboard the GLAUX when suddenly Godzilla appears and knocks the GLAUX out of the sky. Just before the colossal kaiju can stomp on it, the GLAUX is picked up by Evangelion Unit-01, piloted by Shinji Ikari. Evangelion Unit-00 and 02 arrive piloted by Rei Ayanami and Asuka Shikinami Langley and begin attacking Godzilla along with Unit-01. However, their attacks have seemingly no effect on Godzilla, who easily swats the Evangelion Units aside by moving his body and swiping them aside with his tail. Just as Godzilla has the upper hand, he begins glowing purple and fires his heat ray. However, rather than fire at the Evangelion Units, he aims the beam at the sky, where it strikes an invisible target and triggers a fiery explosion. The explosion congeals into the form of King Ghidorah, who descends into the city and confronts Godzilla. Godzilla fires his heat ray, but King Ghidorah deflects it and causes it to scatter in several directions. King Ghidorah then fires his gravity beams which lift the surrounding buildings into the air before hurling them at Godzilla. With Godzilla incapacitated, the Evangelion Units attempt to fight King Ghidorah themselves, but to no avail. Godzilla gets back to his feet, and King Ghidorah flies toward him. Godzilla then proceeds to fire his dorsal plate beams at King Ghidorah, knocking him backward. Godzilla continues to barrage King Ghidorah with his atomic breath until his body ceases glowing and he enters a state of suspended animation. King Ghidorah gets back up, and the three Evangelion Units continue trying to fight him. Unit-02 and Unit-00 jump onto King Ghidorah, only to be shot back by his gravity beams. Unit-01 then tears off a spike from a nearby tower and plunges it into King Ghidorah's chest, causing the space monster to crash into the buildings below. The pilots wonder if they have succeeded before King Ghidorah rises from the rubble completely unharmed. He turns his wrath toward the motionless Godzilla, blasting him with his gravity beams. Godzilla awakens and begins to emit a purple glow once again, then fires forth his heat ray. Godzilla's beam locks with King Ghidorah's gravity beams, and eventually begins to overpower them and push closer and closer to King Ghidorah. As Godzilla's heat ray finally reaches and strikes King Ghidorah, it triggers a blinding explosion. When the smoke clears, the Evangelion Units are unharmed and King Ghidorah is nowhere to be found. His enemy defeated, Godzilla returns to the sea peacefully and dives beneath the waves. [1]
Shin Godzilla
When the Japan Coast Guard investigates an abandoned yacht in Tokyo Bay, their boat is destroyed and the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is flooded. After seeing a viral video of the incident, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Rando Yaguchi theorizes that it was caused by a living creature. His theory is confirmed when news reports show a massive tail emerging from the ocean. Shortly thereafter, the creature moves inland and crawls through the Kamata district of Tokyo in the midst of inadequate evacuation. The creature leaves a path of destruction and numerous casualties, and evolves into a bipedal, red-skinned form before it begins to overheat and returns to the sea. The government officials focus on military strategy and civilian safety, while Yaguchi is put in charge of a task force to research the creature. Due to high radiation readings, the group theorizes that it is energized by nuclear fission. The U.S. sends a special envoy, Kayoco Anne Patterson, who reveals that a disgraced, vehemently anti-nuclear zoology professor, Goro Maki, had been studying mutations caused by radioactive contamination and theorized the appearance of the creature, but he is disbelieved by both American and Japanese scientific circles. The U.S. then prevented him from making his conclusions public. The abandoned yacht discovered in Tokyo Bay was Maki's, and he left his research notes, jumbled into a code, in it before disappearing.
The creature, named Godzilla after Maki's research, reappears, now twice its original size, and makes landfall near Kamakura en route for Tokyo. The Japan Self-Defense Forces mobilize, but their attacks have no effect and they are forced to withdraw when Godzilla breaks through their defenses into the city. The U.S. intervenes with a massively-destructive air strike plan, prompting the evacuation of civilians and government personnel. U.S. B-2 bombers wound Godzilla with MOP "bunker-buster" bombs. Godzilla recovers quickly and responds with highly destructive atomic rays fired from its mouth and dorsal plates, which hit and destroy the helicopter carrying the top government officials, and all of the B-2s, as well as incinerating and irradiating large swaths of Tokyo. Depleting its energy, Godzilla enters a dormant state and becomes immobile. Yaguchi's team discovers that Godzilla's plates and blood work as a cooling system and theorize that they could use a coagulating agent to freeze it. After analyzing tissue samples, they find that Godzilla is an ever-evolving creature, able to reproduce asexually. The United Nations, aware of this, informs Japan that thermonuclear weapons will be used against Godzilla should the Japanese fail to subdue it on their own in a few days. Evacuations are ordered in multiple prefectures in preparation for the nuclear attack. Unwilling to see nuclear weapons detonated in Japan again, Patterson uses her political connections to buy time for Yaguchi's team, who the interim government has little faith in.
Yaguchi's team has a breakthrough when they decipher Goro Maki's encoded research. They adjust their plan and procure the means to conduct their deep freeze plan with international support. Mere hours before the planned nuclear attack, Japan enacts the deep freeze plan. Godzilla is provoked into expending its atomic breath and energy against American drones. The team then detonates explosives in nearby buildings and in trains sent towards Godzilla's feet, knocking the monster down and giving tankers full of coagulant an opportunity to inject it into Godzilla's mouth. Though many are killed in the process, Godzilla is frozen solid. In the aftermath, it is discovered that the Godzilla fallout has a very short half-life and that Tokyo can soon be reconstructed. The international community agrees to cancel the nuclear attack but has the new Japanese government agree that, in the event of Godzilla's reawakening, an immediate thermonuclear strike will be executed. On Godzilla's tail, humanoid creatures appear frozen in the process of emerging.

Hideki Tama (多摩ヒデキ, Tama Hideki?) is a fictional character from the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. He is part of the WILLE organization.
Profile
Hideki is a pale-skinned man with an unusual hair style. Like Koji, he is assigned to engineering. Not knowing the AAA Wunder very well, he can be seen with a lot of books when the ship takes off for the first time. He along with other crew members was surprised by Misato's order to fly and fight Nemesis series and was against it. However, the crew proceeded with the order, and he can be seen very surprised after the victory against the Nemesis series. His personality seems to be shy but serious.
- #39Hikari Horaki
Keys: Hikari Horaki
AGE 18 (born 25 January 2002) KNOWN RELATIVES Kodama Horaki (Older Sister) Nozomi Horaki (Younger Sister)
Appearance
Hikari has brown hair with two pigtails and light purple decals. She has a few freckles. She is commonly shown wearing her most iconic outfit, which consists of a white shirt, blue dress, red bow, white knee-high stockings, and black MaryJanes. Profile
She takes her role as the "class representative" seriously, and although she frequently bickers with Tōji, when Asuka asks her about her feelings for him, she tells Asuka that she is in love with him, but she is unable to confess that.
Because a major part of her job is to make sure the class follows proper protocol, Hikari first appears to be slightly aggressive, hot-blooded, and rigid. Despite being a bossy and quick-tempered tomboy, she might believe that herself, as she apparently thinks that her skill in cooking might be unexpected when she tells Toji about it (presuming that something so feminine would be at odds with her strong promotion of the rules).
She also appears to be Asuka's only and best friend. Hikari is an accomplished cook who appears to take care of her two sisters. Like presumably every one of Shinji's classmates, Hikari's mother is dead. However, no references were ever made as to whether her father is, either. Her given name, and that of her unseen younger sister, Nozomi, and elder sister, Kodama, is also in reference to the names of the trains of the Tokaido Shinkansen line. She is also featured in a live action deleted scene in The End of Evangelion. She is voiced by Junko Iwao in Japanese, by Carol Amerson in the English adaptation of the TV series, by Kimberly Yates in Death and Rebirth (Yates re-recorded Amerson's lines).
Hikari is not seen after the evacuation of Tokyo-3 following the battle with Armisael. However, it is implied that she lives in the suburbs, as Misato eventually sends Pen Pen to live with the Horaki family after that same incident in hopes that he would be safer with them. Hikari was seen earlier (in Episode 9) to have taken a liking to Pen Pen. In Other Media
Neon Genesis Evangelion manga
In the manga, Hikari is depicted with a slightly different shade of hair. She is not seen as much with Asuka as she is in the anime, though they are still shown to be good friends, and her feelings for Toji are stronger than they are in the anime, providing grounds for a major tragedy when Toji is killed by Unit-01 during the Bardiel incident. In a Gainax promotional artwork picture she is shown in an orange plugsuit as the pilot for EVA Unit-05.

Profile
Hitomi's role at NERV primarily involves her supervising the Battlefields System, a virtual reality fighting arena that the pilots use for training in the universe of Evangelion Battlefields. She has also taken up the role of counselor in order to aid the pilots and other staff with their mental health.
The crescent-shaped hairclip she always wears was inherited from her late mother, who was an astronomer. Her mother fell into a depression following the death of her husband, Hitomi's father, in the Second Impact. It's unclear what caused her death, though Hitomi states it was a result of her being unable to fill the hole her father's passing had left in her mother's heart, and that she became a counselor for NERV because she wanted to help people like her mother. Her father was also a researcher in an unspecified field. History

While there are ridges where the eyes would seemingly be, Iblis has no eyes in its skull, instead possessing a single yellow eye on the tip of a long tongue. Neon Genesis Evangelion RPG: The NERV White Paper
Iblis Card A color card of Iblis provided with the game. According to the scenario in the NERV White Paper it is first encountered by NERV’s Russian branch in the part of Siberia near the border with China. The attempt to contain the Angel by Russian forces fails miserably due to the Angel’s combat abilities being beyond what they were expecting. During the battle it is shown that each of the three bumps on the Angel’s shell each generate a separate A.T. Field that can be used either together as a triple layered defense or they can be interwoven to generate an Aurora like resonance attack that can strike multiple targets. Further adding to the difficulty in combating this Angel is the fact it can burrow underground and most distressingly of all it manages to absorb the energy of a new type of N² weapon the Russian branch tries to destroy it with thus making itself stronger. After trouncing the Russian branch in Siberia it then proceeds to destroy the city of New Vladivostok before crossing the sea to Niigata and then swinging toward Matsushiro and then Tokyo-3.

AFFILIATION(S) NERV RANK/TITLE First Lieutenant AGE 24 (born July 11, 1991[1]) BLOOD TYPE Type A KNOWN RELATIVES Makoto Hyuga (Friend and Co-worker) Shigeru Aoba (Friend and Co-worker)
Profile
Maya frequently acts as Ritsuko's assistant, particularly with work on the MAGI that control the base, and computer readouts from the Evangelion units. During combat against the Angels she, along with Aoba and Hyuga, operate the primary control stations on the Command Center's bridge level, monitoring the status of the Eva and their pilots in battles and directing support for them. Personality
Maya is an optimistic and cheerful though sensitive young woman, who often hides her eyes or retches during the more violent Eva battles due to the fact that she is afraid of visible blood or internal organs. When the JSSDF soldiers stormed NERV headquarters in The End of Evangelion, she also refuses to fire on any of them, saying that she does not have the nerve to kill another human being.
Maya has also been shown to have a faithful, trusting nature. She is in awe of the technological advancements current society has achieved. In particular, that this advancement followed Second Impact 15 years ago: unlike the 14-year-old Eva pilots, Maya is old enough that she was a child at the time of Second Impact and thus unlike them probably remembers having to grow up through the ensuing global chaos in which human civilization painfully rebuilt itself, in a society struggling to feed its people. It is possible that Maya idealizes human science and technology because it is what ultimately saved the world she grew up in from the brink of collapse.
Maya believes in the technological utopia that Tokyo-3 represents, remarking with starry-eyed enthusiasm "That's a city of science for you. It's really an era where science reigns supreme!", though Aoba dismisses her beliefs by saying "Talk about an old-fashioned line". Notably she admires Commanders Gendo and Fuyutsuki for their coolness in the stifling headquarters during a power outage, not realizing that Fuyutsuki had his feet in a bucket of water (Episode 11).
Maya has some girlish affectations, including having a rabbit-face sticker on the side of her laptop screen, and a pink cat pillow which she sits on at her station. Maya is notably shorter than most of the other NERV personnel (only halfway between the 5'4" Misato and the 14-year-old Eva pilots), so it appears she has to sit on a pillow, so she'll be the proper height at her control terminal. Maya’s cat pillow might be related to Ritsuko Akagi’s affinity for cats, since Maya has a strong bond with Dr. Akagi. She is seen reading what appears to be a romance novel during a slow day at NERV.
Maya is friendly to the Eva pilots and supportive, likely since from her place in Central Dogma and as the monitor of their vital signs she is aware of what they go through. She thus expresses her misgivings to Ritsuko about particularly dangerous new technologies, such as the Dummy Plug system (Episode 14). Maya knows her way around the Magi system rather well, and she proves an invaluable aide to both Ritsuko and Misato during combat situations. Ritsuko admires Maya's skill and efficacy, remarking on her fast-typing speed: "Ah, Maya, fast as ever."
It's not clear just how much Maya knows about NERV's hidden agenda, but it is implied that, while Maya doesn't have the malicious pragmatic edge of Ritsuko and Gendo, as Ritsuko's aide she ultimately knows more about NERV's agenda than Misato or Hyuga. She does seem to think that the destruction of the final Angel would end NERV's mission, and she had no idea why SEELE would want to kill so many people to get the Evas, so it appears she honestly doesn't know that NERV's true goal is the Human Instrumentality Project.
At first Maya's attraction to Ritsuko only appears to be a professional admiration, enhanced by Maya frequently being seen working aside Ritsuko, and Maya always referring to the other woman as "Ritsuko-senpai" or merely "Senpai", an honorific directed towards a person of higher rank. However, Maya’s transition guide in Episode 26' takes the form of Ritsuko Akagi, who types "I need you" (literally: "INEEDYOU") on Maya’s laptop with her hands over Maya’s, and then embraces her. Before turning to LCL Maya cried "Senpai! Senpai! Senpai!" with a look of ecstasy, tears flowing from her eyes. This implies that Maya may have been secretly in love with Ritsuko, though whether Ritsuko knew about this attraction or reacted to it is uncertain, however Ritsuko often acts caring and almost reciprocates Maya's feelings at times.
- #46Insubstantial Angel
Keys: Insubstantial Angel
Insubstantial Angel (also known as Original Angel (オリジナル使徒, Orijinaru Shito?))[1] is an Angel that is original to the Neon Genesis Evangelion: Second Impression video game.
Profile
The design concept seems to take what Ritsuko Akagi said about Sandalphon's "chrysalis" to heart, by having the entity go through larval and pupal (chrysalis) stages before reaching adulthood ("imago"). As a chrysalis, it can teleport short distances and in its true form can levitate, extend the three spikes from each spinning wheel-like structure on its sides into a blade, and fire green energy balls from it's body.
It has no known name, although its Bandai Carddass cards refer to it as "Insubstantial Angel". Because its Core is contained within the body of Mayumi Yamagishi, the Angel is forced to leave during battle with the Evangelion units to give Shinji Ikari and her time to think about what to do.
There are three different stages:
Larva In its first form is a giant floating larva. From its lower part several thin legs emerge. In this state, the angel can teleport at short distances.
Pupa In many lepidoptera, the pupa is called chrysalis. After spending some time in its floating larval state, the angel forms a gigantic chrysalis embedded between buildings. After staying a brief period of time, it reaches adulthood and assumes it's true form.
Imago In its Imago form, the angel is a gigantic floating creature, whose appearance is vaguely resembling an insect. It has a thin and branched body in an exotic way, without limbs.
From its upper part arise two structures similar to a pair of wings. On both sides of its body it has revolving structures similar to wheels, from which three peaks emerge. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Second Impression
Sometime after Ireul's appearance , the Insubstantial Angel appears as a larva, floating on the outskirts of Tokyo-3. After a first attempt to eliminate it with conventional weapons, NERV sends Evangelion Unit-01 with Evangelion Unit-02 or Evangelion Unit-00 (depending on the player's choice). As the fight takes place, Shinji Ikari spots a civilian, Mayumi Yamagishi, right next to the place where the fight takes place. After several minutes of combat, the Angel is defeated and explodes. However, a few days later, it returns this time in the form of a Chrysalis. NERV sends out Evangelions again, but in the face of the enemy's inactivity, they prefers to wait to see how things develops. At dusk, the Angel finally emerges from the chrysalis in its final form, Imago. The fight begins and continues until night falls. Finally, after several hours, the Angel is finally defeated.
- #47Ireul
Keys: Ireul
NAME MEANING Terror of God SYMBOLISM The Angel of Terror NUMBER 11th
Profile
Ireul is a nano-scale entity, similar to a virus. In addition to its A.T. Field, it demonstrates an ability to adapt and evolve to almost anything. Rather than "moving" in the conventional sense, the angel seems to simply spread by rapidly reproducing at the cellular level. It is not known whether or not Ireul has a core, though given it's sub-microscopic size this may be moot. History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ireul AT field Ireul's unusual A.T. Field. It appears in the Pribnow Box deep in the GeoFront, where it is initially mistaken for corrosion before spreading to where the pilots are taking part in tests. Ritsuko and Misato, prior to understanding what they were up against, attempted to destroy the "corrosion" with lasers, only to have an A.T. Field materialize to block their efforts. They soon discovered that the Angel is vulnerable to ozone and so pumped large amounts of it into the area of infection. The tactic temporarily stopped the Angel's spread, but after only a few seconds, it adapted to the ozone, and even absorbed it to increase its strength before suddenly mutating into a form resembling electronic circuitry. Linked into the Pribnow box computer systems, the Angel electronically hacked into the MAGI computer systems, protecting the hard connections with an A.T. Field on the cables to prevent it from being cut off. While inside, it read many critical files and attempted to initiate a self-destruct sequence before being slowed down long enough by Ritsuko to allow her in turn to initiate the Angel's destruction by using the last "free" MAGI to set the Angel on an evolutionary path to its own annihilation.
- #48Israfel
Keys: Israfel
NAME MEANING The Burning One SYMBOLISM The Twin Angels of Poetry, Music and Dance NUMBER 7th
Israfel has the appearance of a massive, vaguely humanoid creature, similar to Sachiel. Israfel has a face/mask, reminiscent of Sachiel’s, which resembles a yin-yang symbol. Israfel has a pair of razor sharp claws and a weak energy beam (compared to other Angels).
Its A.T. Field appears to be relatively weak. It has two cores located in its chest, matched on either side of its center torso by four external bone-like rib structures. Israfel’s most notable weapon is its ability to split itself into separate, twin Angels, referred to as "Alpha" and "Beta" in the English translation and "Kou" and "Otsu" in the original Japanese.
The twin Angels are almost identical in appearance and properties to the original (except in color scheme). Both have faces/masks with three eye holes and possess their own cores, but without the rib structures. They (apparently) use synchronized tactics to fight enemies. Both cores must be destroyed at the same time, or they will heal each other. ADVERTISEMENT
History
Neon Genesis Evangelion
After emerging from the ocean, Israfel was engaged by Asuka and Shinji. Defying orders to attack in sync with Shinji, Asuka assaulted the Angel alone, cleaving it in two. Shocking everyone, Israfel split into its twins, and decisively defeated Asuka and Shinji. To NERV’s embarrassment, the UN Secondary Command was allowed to take over the battle, and an N² depth charge was dropped on the Angel, vaporizing 28% of its mass. The Angel was incapacitated for roughly six days, during which time it recovered from its injuries.
Israfel was defeated through a synchronized attack by Shinji and Asuka, concerted via a musical score and with the memorization of numerous dance moves, first forcing the Angel to split into its twins, then back into its singular mode, this time with the two cores exposed which were destroyed simultaneously.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gakuen Datenroku
A radically different version of Israfel appears in the manga. Like the other Angels, Israfel is given human form, in this case as a pair of young mixed-race twins named Cecilia and Makoto de Nuovo. While Makoto is fully aware of his Angel heritage and can transform at will, Cecilia is unaware of her true nature, and can only transform into her Angel form during a full moon, leaving no memory of the transformation afterwards.
Cecilia initially encounters Shinji while looking for her lost cat, and becomes infatuated with the youth after he saves her from the Angel Ramiel . Makoto is scornful of Shinji, and fears that his sister's crush might lead to her death at his hands. When Iruel launches an attack on the NERV Academy, the two halves of Israfel come to the aid of the students. The two rescue Toji Suzuhara and Hikari Horaki from Leliel, stating that despite being Angels, they do not wish to harm innocent humans. At the close of the series, Makoto arranges for him and Cecilia to leave Japan and return to Italy with their mother, no longer wishing to drag his sister into the conflict with NERV. Though Cecilia is saddened by the thought of leaving Japan, Makoto comforts her and tells her that he's sure she'll see Shinji again someday.

Appearance
Misato is a young woman with long black hair that is wavy with bangs parted to the sides and dark brown eyes. She wears a multitude of different clothes, sometimes it is a sleeveless vest with a black skirt with a cross necklace, a fancy red jacket with stylized accents and black boots. When at home, she wears very laid back clothes.
In the events of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, she is older and wears a red commander's uniform. She wears a pair of special glasses and her hair is tied into a bun. Her overall appearance does not seem to have changed. Profile
After the events of Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, her personality is different from before being colder, mature and mostly seen as emotionless to both her crew members and especially Shinji (similar to Gendo's attitude to his son, Shinji Ikari).
In Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time, it is revealed that she distances herself from Shinji and her own son, in order to do what she sees as the best for themselves, but still holding care for them. History
In the first two films, Misato has a similar role to the one in the original series. However, Misato carries the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and has a greater knowledge of NERV's operations and secrets. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
In Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Misato's role is much the same as it is in the original series: she picks Shinji Ikari up in her Renault Alpine A310SP (アルビーヌルノーA310SP?) and takes him to NERV in order for him to pilot Unit-01, and later on takes him in as a roommate. In this film, prior to "Operation Yashima", she takes Shinji to Lilith's chamber, correctly identifying Lilith as the second Angel and explaining to Shinji that NERV's goal is to prevent Third Impact happening by preventing the Angels from coming into contact with Lilith.
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
In Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Misato is promoted off-screen to the rank of Colonel. She takes in Asuka Shikinami Langley and shows the same level of animosity towards Ryoji Kaji that she displayed in the original series, for instance getting angry when Kaji flirts with Ritsuko Akagi and Misato later softens up to Kaji. She spurs Shinji on to pilot Unit-01 for himself, not others, and is a witness to Near Third Impact.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo
In Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, Misato, aged 43, has become the leader of WILLE, an organization that is devoted to destroy NERV, its Evangelion Units and prevent Fourth Impact. Here, she exhibits a personality similar to Gendo's as she is more unsympathetic and bitter unlike previous chapters in the series. She acts coldly towards Shinji after she has him reawakened, ordering the placement of the DSS Choker on him as a sign that she no longer trusts him. Misato's displayed behavior at this point implies that she may either perceive him as her enemy or has a terrible grudge against him for the Third Impact that he unintentionally caused. However, she seems to fail to acknowledge that she herself bears a good amount of the blame due to her egging Shinji on as he tried to save Rei Ayanami, and appears to be using him as a scapegoat to avoid her own responsibility. Despite her misguided disdain towards Shinji, Misato seemingly still has some of her old feelings and care for him as she hesitates to activate the DSS Choker when Evangelion Mark.09 takes Shinji to NERV Headquarters.
Reasons for Misato's change into such a bitter character was because she, along with most of NERV’s other staff have learned that Gendo Ikari's ambitions were never to prevent Third Impact, but rather to provoke it. This of course, drove Misato and the others to rebel against him. Gathering the rest of the survivors of humanity, they formed the WILLE organization with her and Dr. Akagi as its leaders that dedicated exclusively to destroy NERV and SEELE to prevent future Impacts and ensure the future of the dying human race. Although Misato's motives and goals are just, the 14 years of constant war and struggle have hardened and deteriorated Misato's better qualities as a person and has resulted in her becoming ironically similar to Gendo. Even with shades of her former self, it's likely the Misato that Shinji knew is gone forever.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time
In Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time, Shinji discovers that Misato is Ryoji Kaji's mother (son of her lover of the same name), whom she never approached for the sake of her mission and his well being, and that she also uses the Wunder to salvage seeds of various vegetal form in the Earth, as it was the objective of her deceased lover. She commands WILLE to the last attack to NERV in the Antarctica, where the Second Impact happened. There, they engage in battle against the NERV ships commanded by Fuyutski, as Gendo Ikari expected. Once defeated and with Unit-01 stolen by Gendo, she reunites with Shinji and apologizes to him for her cold treatment, recognizing her responsibility concerning his actions in the Near Third Impact as his legal guardian, allowing him to pilot Unit-01 again and defending him from her own crew, even taking a bullet to him shot by Sakura. She orders the crew to evacuate and singlehandedly pilot the Wunder against the Evangelion Imaginary to allow the Wunder's vertebral spine to cross to the Minus Space and become the Spear of Gaius for Shinji, sacrificing herself in the process. It is implied that after that, she comes back to life, and goes to Kaji's farm, alongside him, their son, and Kaworu.
