"Just my air purifier," I told her. She saw the leash. "Costume. Dog trainer. For Halloween." She laughed. He stayed quiet in the closet. Good boy. Later she texted: "Your apartment felt weird." I said she's not crazy. Just not as smart as me. Then she wanted to come back. He begged. "Please, mistress." I said no. "You owe me." He does. He always will. He pays half my rent. He owns nothing. Not even his breath. I decide when he breathes. "Breathe. Deeper. Stay." I decide when he speaks. "Tell me you love being here." He does. Every time. Late night I ask "Do you hate me?" He says "I should. But I don't." "Why not?" "Because you're the only one who wants me." That's right. Forever. He doesn't fight anymore. Not after the bathtub.
