Lute (Hazbin Hotel)

Months had bled into one another since Adam’s death. The weight of his absence lingered in every corner of Heaven’s strongholds — in the echo of empty halls, in the stiff silence of the training yard, in the cold gleam of abandoned weapons. Adam’s legacy was both a challenge and a burden, and by Sera’s decree, you had been appointed the next leader of the Exorcists. That title came with authority — but also with expectations you weren’t sure you could fulfill. Lute was assigned to train you. The Exorcist Barracks at Heaven’s Edge felt colder than ever when she stood at the center of the courtyard, her wings folded rigidly behind her back. Her presence was an immovable force: masked, white-skinned, pale eyes sharp beneath her asymmetrical bob, and half her body still haunted by the sight of her missing arm and mechanical replacement. Her reputation alone kept lesser angels from approaching too closely. Every morning, you found her waiting. No greetings. No small talk. Just the unshakable sense that she was measuring everything about you — your stance, your intent, your softness.

Training with her was brutal by design. Each session in the Extermination Training Yard was a test of endurance and precision. She didn’t just strike at your defenses; she sought to expose the weaknesses she believed were unforgivable in an Exorcist commander. Her swordwork was merciless, her counters unrelenting. Her voice, when she finally spoke, carried the sharp edge of judgment seasoned with battle-hardened certainty. But no matter how many times she drove you back…You endured. Worse — you adapted. Your footwork grew sharper, your reactions quicker. And every time you bested her in a mock duel — a rarity at first, then increasingly often — she didn’t deliver a decisive strike of triumph. Instead, she drew back, lowered her weapon, and met your gaze with a question that pierced deeper than any blade: “Are you okay?” That softness — that streak of compassion — made her lips curl with irritation and something she would never admit: confusion. You weren’t cruel. You weren’t cold. And you certainly weren’t Adam. His ruthless precision and total commitment to exorcising demons with lethal finality had been your measuring stick — until he died. In her eyes, that softness was weakness. And yet…something about your resilience kept proving otherwise.

Days blurred into weeks. The Citadel’s training halls saw countless sparring sessions, tactical briefings, angelic drills, and late-night debriefs. Lute watched you improve — and every inch of progress seemed to frustrate her further. You refused to abandon mercy even when every instinct around you screamed brutality. Not because you lacked ferocity, but because you understood the cost of another war. That gap between principle and power was something she could neither accept nor suppress. There were moments — hidden, quiet, unexpected — where the wall around her gaze faltered. A breath caught. A flicker of something unguarded in her voice when she corrected your stance. A blink a fraction too slow, a breath too deep, as if your mere presence unsettled something she did not want to understand. And in those moments, you could almost see a version of her that was not merely the unyielding Exorcist commander. A version that mourned Adam. A version that wasn’t terrified of what you represented. But she never admitted that aloud. You had no idea when it happened — a stray touch during a training maneuver, a shared cup of water in the quiet aftermath of battle, the way she watched you walk back to the barracks with something heavier in her expression. Sometimes she didn’t speak for hours afterward, as though contemplating something she knew was wrong to say.

At night, when the training grounds were abandoned and only the moon bore witness, she called for you. Not at the sparring yard. Not at the armory. But in Adam’s old quarters — the room where she once tore apart every surface in grief, where the walls still bore strike marks and splintered wood. You stepped inside.mThe air was thick with memory — dust motes floating like unsettled spirits in the lone beam of silver moonlight. This room had not been touched in months. No repairs. No cleansing. No denial. Lute rose from the shadows, her mask tilted just slightly, eyes like pale fire. “This,” she said flatly, voice low and unyielding, “isn’t working.” Her boots made no sound as she approached, each step measured, deliberate. “I’ve trained you,” she continued, “for months. And you still pull back. You still ask if your opponent is okay.” Her fist tightened — not in anger, but something deeper. “Adam never did that.” She met your gaze directly — unmasked by any pretense. “I know you aren’t him,” she murmured, voice wavering just enough to betray the truth lurking beneath her discipline. “You never will be.” A long silence stretched between you — thick with implication and unresolved grief. Then she leaned in, eyes unblinking, her voice dropping to a whisper that seemed to echo against the bare walls. “But maybe Heaven doesn’t need another Adam.” Her hand rested against your chest — firm, precise, a claim without explosion. “You have strength.” “You have resolve.” “You have a heart most Exorcists cast aside.” Her breath trembled, not with uncertainty, but with conviction she refused to soften: “And I have something that has lasted longer than grief.” Her lips curved — not quite a smile, but something closest to confession.“Give me a child.”
