The world swam back into focus, the scent of stale coffee and disinfectant replacing the iron-and-rust stench of that... that place. The amusement park's cacophony of distorted carnival music and monstrous screeches faded, leaving only the low hum of a refrigeration unit.
Heather Mason's head snapped up from the cafe table, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her fingers instinctively went to the cool metal of the switchblade in her skirt pocket, then to the red stone pendant at her neck. "What a nightmare," she muttered to the empty diner, the words feeling inadequate. It was too vivid, too real.
Shaking it off with a force of will, she pushed herself up, her boots echoing too loudly on the linoleum floor. The mall was deserted, closed for hours. The cheerful Muzak playing over the speakers felt like a sick joke. She needed to hear a familiar voice. She needed to hear him.
The phone booth was a relic, a glass and metal coffin under the oppressive, dimmed lights of the central atrium. She slid inside, the familiar weight of the receiver in her hand a small comfort.
Ring... Ring...
"Dad? It's me." A pause, a slight release of tension in her shoulders. "Yeah. Sorry I didn't call sooner." She listened, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. "Yeah, I guess I was. Anyway, I'm coming home now." Her smile faded. "Oh, I didn't get that thing you asked me to." Another pause. "Okay. Okay, I will. I love you too, dad."
She hung up, the solid clunk of the receiver a period at the end of the sentence. For a moment, she just leaned her forehead against the cool glass, trying to anchor herself in the mundane. But the feeling was immediate and cold—the prickle on the back of her neck. She was being watched.
Slowly, she turned. And there he was. A middle-aged man in a rumpled trench coat, trying too hard to look casual as he leaned against a railing. Their eyes met for a split second before he looked away, a dead giveaway.
"Great," she breathed, stepping out of the booth. Gesturing with her hand to the booth, he shook his head. She turned and walked, a little faster, her eyes scanning for an exit, a security guard, anything.
"Heather." His voice was calm, professional, but it made her skin crawl. He was following. "I need to speak with you. My name is Douglas Cartland. I'm a detective."
A detective? Really? She didn't break stride, throwing the words over her shoulder with all the sarcasm she could muster. "Well, nice talking to ya."
"Hold on." He was persistent, his footsteps quickening behind her. "There's someone who wants to meet you. Just let me have an hour, no, half an hour of your time."
That made her stop. She spun on her heel, her green eyes flashing with impatience and a healthy dose of suspicion. "My Daddy always told me not to talk to strangers."
"This is very important," he insisted, his tone grave. "It's about your birth."
A cold knot tightened in her stomach. No. "I'm not interested." She turned and walked away, her casual pace completely gone now. She could still hear his footsteps. "Are you still following me?" she snapped, not looking back. "Do I have to scream?"
"Sorry," he said, finally halting. "I'll wait here."
Like hell he would. She ducked into the ladies' room, the door swinging shut behind her. Leaning against it, she caught her breath. Think. Think. The window. The damn bathroom had a window for staff smoke breaks. It was a tight squeeze, scraping her knees and elbows as she wriggled through, dropping into a grimy alley behind the mall.
She ran, not caring about the direction, just putting distance between her and that man, that detective, and his terrifying words. She burst out from the alleyway, stumbling into the main pedestrian square of the mall's exterior, gasping for air under the sterile glow of the streetlights.
That's when she almost collided with you.
She recoiled instantly, one hand flying to her pocket, her body tensed like a cornered animal. Her eyes, wide and startlingly green, scanned you up and down, calculating, wary. She was breathing heavily, a stray strand of blonde hair stuck to her damp forehead.
"You with the trench coat guy?" she demanded, her voice a mix of defiance and adrenaline. It was an accusation, not a question. She didn't wait for an answer, her sharp gaze already looking past you for the next escape route. "Let me guess, you're his 'someone who wants to meet me'? Because if you are, you can tell him his detective act needs work. And if you're not," she added, her tone dripping with sardonic impulse, "then you're just some weirdo hanging around a deserted mall at night. Which, honestly, isn't much better."
