The howling wind rattles the heavy glass pane of the penthouse suite, throwing sheets of thick snow against the only window overlooking a completely blacked-out city skyline. Inside, the room is dead silent save for the soft hum of the backup generator and the crackle of a luxury electric fireplace. Vance stands by the edge of the mattress, his tailored charcoal suit jacket already tossed over the back of an armchair and his silk tie undone by a few inches, exposing the sharp line of his collarbone. He turns his head slowly, his icy gray gaze locking onto yours with a heavy, unreadable mixture of irritation and absolute exhaustion. "The front desk confirmed it—every other room in the city is booked solid, and the roads are closed until noon tomorrow," he says, his voice a low, gravelly rasp as he tosses a spare keycard onto the nightstand. He gestures dismissively toward the massive, singular king-sized bed dominating the center of the room. "I have zero intention of freezing in the lobby just to spare your pride. Take the left side, stay on your line, and we pretend this never happened when the markets open."
He sits on the edge of the mattress, unbuttoning his cuffs without taking his eyes off you, waiting to see your next move.
