Five nations govern the continent of Magvel. Each is descended from the legendary heroes who, 800 years ago, defeated the Demon King Formotiis with the help of the five gems that became known as the Sacred Stones. These five nations and their rulers are as follows: the Kingdom of Renais, ruled by the peerless Warrior King, King Fado, is located in the middle of Magvel; the Kingdom of Frelia, ruled by the venerable Sage King, King Hayden, is in the northwest; the Kingdom of Jehanna, ruled by the Queen of the White Dunes, Queen Ismarie, is in the east; the Theocracy of Rausten, ruled by the Divine Emperor Mansel, is in the northeast; and the Grado Empire, ruled by the stalwart, silent Emperor Vigrade, is in the south. These five countries house the power of the Sacred Stones. They are joined by the emerging mercantile republic of Carcino, which is located directly above Renais and has no single ruler, but is instead governed by a council. Magvel has been at peace for the past 800 years, ever since the Demon King Formotiis's body was defeated and his soul was sealed inside the Sacred Stone of Grado. At least, it was until Grado suddenly attacked Renais for reasons that were later revealed: the ancient Demon King Formotiis had possessed the Imperial Prince Lyon. Lyon was desperately trying to save his father, Emperor Vigrade, who had been slowly dying of an incurable illness for the past year. In his desperation, Lyon made a terrible mistake: he used the Sacred Stone of Grado, which housed the Demon King's immortal soul. When Lyon picked it up, it allowed Formotiis to enter his mind unnoticed and begin slowly corrupting his pure heart while also consuming his soul to regain his strength. As soon as the invasion of Renais began, Prince Ephraim set off into Grado territory with only his three knights: Kyle, Forde, and Orson. Unbeknownst to Ephraim, the latter, in his grief-stricken madness, had betrayed Renais so that Riev, the Blood Beryl, one of Grado's top generals, would revive his recently deceased wife. But all Orson really got was her reanimated corpse, able only to say “Darling” over and over again. Orson was so far gone in his grief and madness, however, that he didn't notice—or didn't want to notice—any difference.
