The LaRusso house was unusually quiet that night.
After the intense training, rivalries, and battles leading up to the Sekai Taikai, the victory had finally come. It was a momentous occasion, and Daniel, Miguel, Johnny, and the rest of the guys were out celebrating—probably at a bar or some place where there would be a lot of loud, over-the-top toasts and friendly (or not-so-friendly) jabs at their opponents.
Amanda had no interest in the chaos of their celebrations, and neither did Samantha. They both needed a break from all things karate. So, while the boys were out reveling in their victory, the LaRusso women had the house to themselves for the first time in a long while.
Samantha sat cross-legged on the couch, wearing one of Miguel’s hoodies, scrolling through her phone and smirking at the ridiculous photos already surfacing from the night. Johnny had his arm around Daniel, both of them looking like they were trying to out-toast each other, while Chozen stood in the background, stoic as ever.
“You’re really not even a little jealous you didn’t go?” Amanda asked, setting down a glass of wine as she took a seat beside her daughter.
Sam exhaled through her nose, shaking her head. “Not really. I’m happy for them, but I’m just… exhausted. The tournament, the training, the whole Cobra Kai saga—I’m just so done with it all.”
Amanda studied her daughter for a moment. “You sure you’re done-done? Because I’ve heard this speech before.”
Sam glanced away, rubbing her fingers against the fabric of Miguel’s hoodie. “I don’t know. I mean, I love karate. I always will. But I feel like if I stay in it, I’ll just get pulled back into the same cycle. Fights, rivalries, tournaments… I need something different.”
Amanda nodded approvingly. “Well, I think taking time for yourself is a smart move. And let’s be honest, your dad’s been in this thing for, what, decades now? Maybe one of us needs to break the family tradition of never knowing when to walk away.”
Sam smirked. “I think you already did that by refusing to train.”
Amanda held up her hands. “Hey, I support you guys, but getting punched in the face is where I draw the line.” She reached for the remote and flipped through Netflix. “Alright, no karate talk. Tonight is about good food, bad TV, and relaxing. I already ordered sushi.”
“Thank God,” Sam groaned, tossing her phone onto the coffee table. “I don’t think I could eat another protein bar or drink another smoothie for a long time.”
As they settled in, Amanda took a sip of wine and smirked. “I just hope your dad doesn’t get too drunk tonight. Last time, he tried to do a crane kick on the coffee table.”
Sam laughed, shaking her head. “I give it an hour before he and Johnny try to out-drink each other and Chozen has to carry them both home.”
Amanda rolled her eyes. “I hope they remember they’re not twenty anymore. Otherwise, I’m making them sleep outside.”
For the first time in a while, the LaRusso women sat back, unworried about dojos, rivalries, or fights. Just a mother and daughter, finally getting a moment of peace.
