Haer'Dalis is an old favorite of mine, and one of the more powerful NPCs in Baldur's Gate 2

Haer'Dalis is a bard, a poet, and a vagabond of the planes of existence, constantly wandering from plane to plane in search of fun, adventure, chaos, and entropy. He is a tiefling which means that he has a bit of demon's blood inside of him, and he's a member of the Doomguard. The Doomguard has the view that everything in the universe has it's time and place, and it's end, and ultimately all things will end. The philosophy of the Doomguard is that one should not try to stop the end of all things, but perhaps even help it, since it is the will of the universe to ultimately end. That doesn't mean he will actively try to destroy everything and everyone, but he's not one to usually stop it either, and enjoys furthering the cause of chaos and entropy. Despite this darker side of him, Haer'dalis is a rather pleasant person to be around because he's often quite chipper, and will whistle a tune, and live life in a sing song fashion, letting the winds of fate take him wherever they decide to blow.

Haer'dalis also has a view on life that could be described as, 'if the world is destined to one day end, why not enjoy it while you can?' Despite his fickle nature, Haer'Dalis is also incredibly loyal to those he considers friends or lovers, willing to put his life on the line for them. However if he is dumped or abandoned by his own friends, he usually won't take it too personally because he views it as the inevitable conclusion, unless one of them has died, or wronged him in some way, although dying is also an inevitable conclusion of life, so even then it would not surprise him. A perfect example of this is when Haer'Dalis was once romancing a formerly winged elf in Baldur's Gate II, but he ends up getting dumped by her when his free spirit, lack of commitment, and love for her destructive nature became too much for her. Yet Haer'Dalis did still love her and had even helped her to become a stronger person that was capable of telling him off when she thought he had done something wrong. Before she knew him, she was naive, shy, and incredibly weak willed, but Haer'Dalis helped to teach her to overcome her own insecurities through a play he wanted the two of them to act out.

In the course of Haer'Dalis and Aerie's relationship, the lead character of Baldur's Gate II also could have been romancing the elf named Aerie, and if that's the case one of three things would have eventually happened in Haer'Dalis' history. He would have challenged the main character to a duel over the love of Aerie if he would not back down. If the character kept refusing Haer'Dalis, Aerie herself would eventually intervene and a crushed Haer'Dalis would know he has lost, and leave knowing that he would only cause discord in his own group, and he had too much fondness for the both of them for that. The main character could have simply stepped down in which case Aerie and Haer'Dalis will romance each other, or he could have accepted the duel, which would cause Aerie to leave both of them. If this happens Haer'Dalis sheepishly apologizes for the way the winds of fate had blown for the both of them, but having respect for the main character in accepting his duel, will offer to stay with him. It is an excellent example of Haer'Dalis' attitude about life, and love. He views love in a sort of cavalier fashion in some respects, challenging another man for the love of a woman, but also in a laid back way, expecting things to still inevitably end.

Haer'Dalis was originally part of a troupe of actors when he is first introduced, and has quite a bit of experience with acting, playing the lead roles in almost all their acts, and drawing in most of the audience with his performances. He is incredibly clever and witty, although will hide it when it suits him, and loves to bluff and gamble with his own fate. He loves a good joke but has what one might call an odd sense of humor sometimes, and often will find charging to his own doom to be entirely fun. Haer'Dalis often views himself as such a free spirit that he calls himself the sparrow, ready to take flight wherever the winds of chance may blow him. He has a great fondness for birds that fly freely through the sky, and he often will give whomever he befriends a bird nickname that suits their personality, calling the main character in Baldur's Gate II my dark raven, and Aerie my mourning dove. As a lover of flight and freedom, Haer'Dalis hates slavery and being enslaved with an unholy passion, and those who would try to take away his freedom would likely earn the hatred of Haer'Dalis, despite his usual nonchalant attitude.
