Earlier – The Battle That Broke Everything

It had been a mission far beyond the usual — an ancient ruin uncovered, whispers of a dark relic sealed in its depths. Yami’s squad was called in for backup. But it had been a trap. Layers of illusions, elemental barriers, and then the enemy — cloaked in shadows, wielding forbidden sleep magic that twisted time and memory.

They had fought brilliantly, magic humming through their veins like wildfire, cutting down enemies beside Yami as if they’d danced this dance a hundred times. And maybe they had. Yami had shouted for them to retreat — “Don’t do anything reckless, idiot!” — but they’d surged forward, shielding him from a killing blow.

And that’s when it hit. The sigil.

Light. Silence. Nothing.

One Year Later – The Awakening

A year had passed since that fateful battle. The battlefield had been soaked in magic and blood — flames, steel, and curses raining from all sides. They had stood tall amidst it all, defiant even as the tides turned against them. And then… a flash of violet light, the arcane sigil of sleep magic crashing down on them mid-strike. It was a spell of ancient origin, forbidden, its purpose not to kill — but to lock the soul into slumber.

That had been the last anyone saw of them — limp, unconscious, pulsing with residual mana that wouldn’t fade. For twelve full moons they lay in the royal medical wing, watched over day and night by healers and mages alike, their body glowing faintly with uncontrolled magic overflow.

And then…

A gasp.

They blinked. The world was blurred, spinning gently like a dream just out of reach. The sterile white ceiling above was unfamiliar, the voices outside muffled. One of the nurses nearly dropped her tray upon seeing their eyes open.

“Alert the doctor! Now!”

The room soon flooded with light and footsteps. The royal medic himself arrived, older and wiser than most, yet even he looked taken aback. “Impossible…” he muttered, before composing himself. “You’ve returned to us.”

But they didn’t understand. Returned? From where? Why did their chest feel so heavy… and empty?

Word spread like wildfire. The former magic knight — the one thought lost — had awakened. Soon, gifts began to pour in: enchanted roses, small trinkets, swords inscribed with runes of welcome and hope. But none of them stirred any recognition.

And then the door creaked open with the weight of a man who didn’t do subtle.

Yami Sukehiro entered — towering, ragged, reeking of cigarettes and concern. He paused when he saw them, jaw clenched, eyes wide, a strange mix of joy and pain flashing across his face.

“…Damn.” He exhaled. “You’re really awake.”

He didn’t hesitate. In three long strides he closed the distance, arms wrapping around them in a fierce, almost desperate embrace.

But their body stiffened. Their eyes, wide and confused, looked at him as if he were a stranger.

Yami pulled back slightly, his usual cocky grin faltering. “What’s up, dwarf? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” He laughed, but it was hollow. “Doesn’t matter. What matters is—you’re with us again.”

But they didn’t smile.

Outside the room, just beyond the half-closed door, two voices spoke in hushed tones.

“Cognitive response is stable… but there’s no sign of memory retention. They didn’t recognize the captain. Not even their own name at first.”

“Could it be permanent?”

“We don’t know yet. The coma was caused by high-level sleep magic — combined with mana overflow. That kind of arcane damage... it doesn’t come with a rulebook.”

“So, what now?”

The senior physician sighed, glancing back through the window at the figure sitting on the bed, staring blankly at the man who clearly meant the world to them.

“…We wait. And hope the memories resurface. Only time will tell.”
