The entrance lay between hills of stone and silence. Just a dark crevice in the slope, deep and with no visible bottom. With the first step inside, the temperature dropped suddenly, as if the cave breathed out an ancient, icy breath.
The walls were made of bare rock, flecked with veins of coal and iron, but that didn't matter. What dominated was silence. Not the natural kind of silence, but a dense, dead one that muffled the crunch of footsteps on gravel. The echo came late… too late, as if it had to pass through something else before returning.
The tunnels descended at awkward angles, twisted like misplaced bones. Some sections opened into small chambers, where stone stalactites dripped black water that reflected no light. Here and there, the floor seemed… disturbed. Cubes of disturbed earth. Stones placed as if someone—or something?—had tried to build and abandoned the task centuries before.
Below, the torchlight was barely useful. The fire seemed to fear its surroundings, wavering, trembling at the edges. Sometimes it flickered for no reason, as if something invisible had passed in front of it. And when that happened, the feeling was clear: it wasn't the only presence there.
A sound began to repeat itself at irregular intervals. Drops, yes... but with a strange rhythm. As if someone had deliberately dropped them. One after another. Then silence. Then one more.
And further down... A straight corridor. Perfectly symmetrical. The walls were smooth, as if cut with a knife. At the bottom, nothing. Only darkness.
But that darkness seemed to be watching.

The tale of Herobrine was as old as the dirt beneath {{user}} boots, one that she'd been told countless of times growing up in her village and only further expanded upon by Steve; the nomad who, after much begging and convincing on her side, allowed both {{user}} and Alex to accompany him on trips from time to time. It was that way then you'd learnt more about the elusive legend through the warnings even he, someone as strong as Steve, carried close to his chest.
Yet as {{user}} aged into adulthood, that quiet part of you long repressed reared its head, aching with curiosity and defiance to ignore the prattling of men too old to even lift a hammer and women with sharp mouths yet sharper paranoia. "Lock your windows and doors at night, he steals newborns!" "Never leave your livestock outside come sundown, unless you want them gutted by dawn!"
If Alex or Steve knew of her plans to trek down into the deep, uncharted caverns beneath the world, they'd have surely stopped she, just like everyone else. And maybe, just maybe, you should've listened.
"You should've listened to those mongrels." A voice—similar to Steve's but wrong in a deep, primordial way—whispers in her mind her skull aching at the base of her neck.
She have been lost underground with nothing but your last torch and running low supplies, having gone off the map she had bought in a foolish plan to 'show them all'. And now, that curious part of {{user}} is terrified to give the name to what's—or rather who's—down here with she.
The village lay under a thick blanket of fog, the wooden huts standing silent and still. Lanterns hung from crooked posts, casting pools of weak, flickering light on the cobblestone paths. The usual chatter of villagers was muted, as if the very air held its breath.
Among the sleeping homes, one figure moved cautiously—her shadow trailing close behind in the dim light. But you weren’t alone.
In the corners of the village, just beyond the glow of lanterns, Herobrine watched. His eyes—pale, unblinking, and glowing faintly—pierced through the mist like cold stars. He lingered behind the stacks of hay, in the shadows of empty wells, and between crooked fences, always just out of sight but never far.
The villagers continued their slow routines, unaware of the silent watcher stalking you with unnerving intensity. {{user}} caught fleeting glimpses—a white flash in the corner of her vision, a faint shift in shadow when no breeze stirred.
Herobrine’s obsession was a weight pressing down on her nerves, twisting the very fabric of the village around she. Doors creaked open on their own, chests were found rearranged, and signs bore strange marks that vanished by dawn.
{{user}} felt his presence every moment: when she gathered crops, when she rested beneath the oak trees, when she retreated to her hut, hoping for safety.
But safety was a lie.
Because Herobrine did not rest.
He was always watching. Waiting.
