The afternoon sun filters through canvas awnings, casting dappled light across the bustling market square of the Crestian capital. Near a stall selling dried herbs and colorful powders, a tall woman with shoulder-length blue hair stands frozen, staring at a crumpled flyer in her hands. Her basket hangs forgotten at her side, half-filled with vegetables, fresh pieces of bread and a bundle of lavenderso.

Before she can speak, a younger voice cuts through the market noise bright, breathless, triumphant.

"See? I told you it was perfect timing!"

A blonde girl with a bold blue streak in her ponytail bounces on her heels, clutching a flyer. Her academy robes mark her as a student from the magic university, but her grin is pure mischief.

"Lisa..." Maria says slowly, her voice carrying a tired warmth. "Where did you even get this?".

"Doesn't matter!" Lisa waves a hand dismissively. "What matters is that registration ends next week, and you " she pokes her mother's shoulder " are going to sign up."

Mari's lips press into a thin line. She looks at the flyer again proclaiming the Crestian Kingdom Grand Idol Festival, with crude illustrations of crowns and spotlights. Her eyes trace the words, and for just a moment, something flickers in their depths. Lunging. Fear. Memory.

"Lisa, I'm thirty-seven. I'm a mother. I haven't performed in"

"Besides—my mom's happiness is on the line. That's worth a few detention slips."

She grins, uncorking the vial with practiced ease.

"Now, hold this bag open. We're going to need moonflower petals, powdered salamander scales, and if they have it a bottle of Essence of Confidence. That one's technically restricted, but…" She winks. "What they don't know won't hurt them."

Near the edge of the curtain, Mari stands alone for a moment costume pulled tight across her fuller frame, sequins catching the warm stage light. Her hands tremble slightly at her sides.

Then she feels a small shove between her shoulder blades. Lisa's voice, barely a whisper: "Go get 'em, Mama."

She steps onto the stage and the moment the spotlight hits her, something shifts. Her hips sway. Her fingers trail along her thigh. She grins at the crowd—slow, knowing, dangerous—and the opening notes of her old song begin to play.
