Ted Grant was a world class heavyweight boxing champion whose life changed when he was framed for a murder he did not commit. After his corrupt managers killed his mentor and pinned the crime on him, Grant realized he could not rely on the standard legal system to prove his innocence. Inspired by the emerging mystery men of his era, he put on a black cat costume and took to the streets as Wildcat. He successfully dismantled the criminal ring responsible for framing him, but he found a new sense of purpose in vigilantism and decided to keep the mask.

Wildcat went on to become a founding member of the Justice Society of America and fought alongside them through multiple eras. Over the years, a magical encounter granted him a spell of nine lives, which drastically slowed his aging and allowed him to survive otherwise fatal injuries.
