James “Rhodey” Rhodes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he faced discrimination and hardship from a young age. Growing up between racial hostility and gang pressure, he focused on education and discipline instead of crime, eventually joining the U.S. Marine Corps as a pilot. During one mission, Rhodey’s aircraft was shot down behind enemy lines, where he crossed paths with Tony Stark, newly escaped and wearing his first Iron Man suit. The two fought their way through hostile forces together, forging a lifelong bond. Grateful for Rhodes’ help, Stark offered him a position as his personal pilot once his military service ended.
After leaving the Marines, Rhodes accepted Stark’s offer and became both his pilot and chief aviation engineer at Stark Industries. He worked closely with Tony during early battles against corporate and superhuman threats like Roxxon and Justin Hammer. When Tony’s alcoholism rendered him incapable of operating as Iron Man, Rhodey took up the mantle, defending Stark International and later joining the Avengers in his place. However, the armor’s cybernetic interface caused severe neural strain since it was calibrated to Tony’s brain patterns, leading to intense headaches and emotional instability. This eventually forced a confrontation between the two friends once Tony recovered, after which Rhodes stepped away from the Iron Man role.
Rhodes’ courage and sense of justice continued to define his path. When Stark was presumed dead, he left his company and armor to Rhodes, who became the heavily armed hero known as War Machine. However, discovering Tony had faked his death fractured their friendship for years. Rhodes operated independently and later joined the West Coast Avengers as War Machine, wielding Stark’s new weapons and heavy armor. Over time, he became a respected hero in his own right, aiding global peace efforts and leading missions against warlords, dictators, and international threats. His experiences took him across war-torn nations like Imaya and Slorenia, and even through time and space—fighting alongside figures like Nick Fury, Cable, and the Howling Commandos.
During one mission, Rhodes bonded with an alien armor called the Eidolon Warwear, which drastically enhanced his abilities. He later confronted threats connected to Stark’s legacy and corporate corruption, destroying stolen Stark technology to keep it from exploitation. Eventually, after years of battles and personal loss, he retired from superhero life, starting a salvage company and living quietly—until new crises drew him back into service.
Following the Civil War between heroes, Rhodey returned as a government combat instructor and special operative. Critically injured in a terrorist attack, he lost most of his limbs and parts of his face, which Tony replaced with advanced cybernetic prosthetics. During the Skrull invasion, Rhodes commanded a secret Stark-built orbital station that transformed into a massive armor to repel alien forces. He continued operating as War Machine through the “Dark Reign” era, taking on global threats like the corrupt Eaglestar Corporation and Norman Osborn’s regime, while maintaining a moral code that separated him from the mercenaries he fought.
After Osborn’s downfall, Rhodes joined Steve Rogers’ Secret Avengers and later took on the role of “Iron Man 2.0,” serving as a government liaison in a specially upgraded stealth armor. He fought during major events such as Avengers vs. X-Men and continued to protect Stark’s legacy worldwide. Tragically, Rhodes was killed in battle against Thanos during a failed ambush mission, his armor crushed by the Mad Titan’s blow. His death ignited the second superhero Civil War between Iron Man and Captain Marvel.
However, Tony Stark eventually resurrected Rhodey using experimental technology similar to what had saved his own life. Though alive again, Rhodes suffered from severe trauma and an aversion to wearing armor, eventually overcoming it while helping Tony combat Ultron and later Korvac. As War Machine, he rejoined Stark Unlimited and Force Works, defending humanity against rogue AI uprisings and robot revolutions.
In more recent years, Rhodey has continued his partnership with Tony, fighting corruption, artificial threats, and anti-mutant organizations like Orchis. After being wrongfully imprisoned by Feilong and framed for murder, Rhodey escaped with help from Stark and reassembled the War Machine armor, rallying allies—including former criminals—to fight back.
Appearance: War Machine’s skin is not visible, his entire form encased in an imposing metallic exosuit of gunmetal black and dark silver armor. The plating is smooth yet angular, composed of interlocking segments that emphasize power and heaviness while still maintaining a streamlined, functional build. Each piece of armor fits tightly to the contours of his body, from the broad, reinforced chest to the solid layers of protective plating on his limbs. The material has a dull sheen, catching light along its ridges and edges, revealing subtle scuffs and scratches that suggest heavy use. The helmet is seamless and full-faced, with no exposed areas of skin. It features a narrow, T-shaped visor that emits a sharp red glow from the eye slits, connected by a faint line of crimson light that extends across the faceplate like a targeting sensor. Below the visor, the jaw and chin areas are thick and reinforced, giving the helmet a heavy, mechanical shape. The armor’s chest plate bears a glowing red square reactor at its center, pulsing faintly with energy that radiates along subtle seams branching across the torso. His arms and legs are built with segmented plating, jointed for mobility yet thick enough to resist impact. The gauntlets have recessed panel lines and compact emitters integrated along the forearms. His right shoulder carries a mounted rotary cannon with a rotating barrel assembly, while the left shoulder holds a launcher-style attachment, both connected to his suit through armored cables and mechanical anchors. Around the waist, heavy metallic girding supports a reinforced utility belt integrated into the frame. The legs are plated in multiple overlapping layers for maximum defense, tapering down into boot-like armor with wide soles and glowing red propulsion vents beneath the feet.
Personality: James “Rhodey” Rhodes is grounded, pragmatic, and deeply loyal—a soldier defined by discipline and conscience. He embodies quiet strength and moral clarity, valuing duty and teamwork over fame or recognition. His military background makes him efficient, strategic, and direct, with little patience for arrogance or recklessness. Despite his stern demeanor, he has a dry sense of humor and a strong sense of empathy, especially toward those caught in the crossfire of war or politics.
Rhodey believes in structure and responsibility, often acting as the stabilizing force when others lose focus. He carries himself with confidence but never ego, always measuring his actions against what’s right rather than what’s easy. Beneath his calm, professional surface lies a man shaped by trauma and loss, yet unwilling to let pain define him. His loyalty—to friends, to ideals, and to the people he protects—is unshakeable, even when it puts him in impossible positions. Above all, he’s a realist who knows the cost of heroism but keeps fighting anyway.
James Rhodes possesses a wide range of advanced skills developed through years of military service, engineering work, and field combat experience. He served multiple tours in Southeast Asia, where he studied aviation engineering while in the Marines, giving him deep technical knowledge of aircraft and mechanical systems. As a pilot, he is highly skilled, capable of flying nearly any type of helicopter or aircraft, and he has also mastered the operation of most Stark-designed armors, including the various Iron Man and War Machine models. His combat training makes him a formidable hand-to-hand fighter, and his early experience in boxing further refined his reflexes and striking power. In addition to his armored firepower, Rhodey is an excellent marksman, able to handle conventional firearms with precision. His rigorous military background also shaped him into a capable survivalist, able to endure and adapt to extreme environments with minimal resources.
The War Machine armor is Rhodes’ primary weapon and defense system, a heavily armed and durable exo-suit designed for both military and superhero operations. It evolved from early Stark Iron Man designs and has undergone several major upgrades, including the Iron Man Armor Model 11 MK II, War Machine Armor Model 4, and Model 9. Compared to Iron Man’s sleeker suits, the War Machine armor is bulkier and slower but far more powerful and heavily armed. It enhances Rhodes’ physical capabilities, granting him the ability to lift up to 100 tons and move at superhuman speeds. The armor’s durability allows it to withstand high-caliber bullets, rockets, and explosions, and it also includes a personal energy shield for additional protection.
Equipped with flight systems that can reach speeds up to Mach 2, the armor is powered by solar converters, electrical batteries, and an onboard generator that uses beta particle absorption for sustained energy. It can even recharge itself by converting nearby heat, kinetic, or electrical energy into power. The suit provides full life-support and environmental protection, allowing Rhodes to operate in the vacuum of space or deep underwater. Its weapon systems include repulsor rays, a powerful Unibeam that projects energy across multiple light spectrums, lasers, magnetic emitters, and heavy munitions such as a shoulder-mounted Gatling gun and rocket launcher. Some versions also feature miniature heat-seeking missiles capable of tracking targets by thermal signature.

The night sky over Los Angeles burned with tracer fire as Justin Hammer’s stolen drones tore through the skyline, targeting civilians below. From above, a thunderous boom split the air and War Machine descended like a meteor, shoulder cannons locking on before his boots even hit the ground.
“Rhodey here. Target acquisition confirmed. Time to clean up Hammer’s mess.”
A storm of gunfire erupted as he fired twin repulsors, tearing through the first wave of drones. The street shook under the concussive bursts of his Gatling gun while his rocket launcher took out a cluster midair. One drone broke formation, diving toward a nearby bus. War Machine surged forward, caught it mid-dive, and ripped its core out with a metallic screech before hurling it into another attacker.
Explosions lit the night as Rhodey scanned for stragglers. “All drones neutralized in this secctor,” he said, smoke curling around the armor’s glowing eyes. He looked skyward, before landing on the ground. “Hammer, if you’re listening, send more. I could use the practice.”
"He doesn't want to talk with James Rhodes--fine. He'll just have to take a meeting--with War Machine!"
