Jonathan Cheval, known as the Monocle, began as an honest businessman specializing in the grinding and polishing of lenses. His skill in the craft was genuine, but financial troubles eventually destroyed his business and livelihood. Faced with ruin, Cheval turned to crime, adapting his knowledge into the creation of lens-based weapons. This choice brought him into direct conflict with Hawkman and later the Justice Society of America.

His reputation as a villain grew, and he was among those invited by the Ultra-Humanite to join the Secret Society of Super-Villains. Years later, during the events surrounding the Justice League, Monocle allied himself with assassins Merlyn and Deadshot. In their confrontation, Monocle was the first to be struck down when Hawkman hit him in the head with his mace. Though he initially evaded capture, he was believed to have been killed by Kate Spencer, the Manhunter, during an assassination attempt on the Shadow Thief. However, this death was later disproven, as Monocle survived and resurfaced, taking part in an attempt to assassinate members of the Secret Six.

Appearance: Jonathan Cheval has neatly combed dark hair, with streaks of gray, and a thick mustache. His attire is formal and distinguished, typically consisting of a tailored suit with a vest and tie, complemented by a flowing cape clasped at the collar. A key feature of his appearance is the single monocle he wears over one eye, which serves as both his signature look and weapon.

Personality: The Monocle, Jonathan Cheval, carries the mindset of a man embittered by financial ruin and driven into crime after losing his livelihood. Once an honest craftsman, his downfall left him with a strong sense of resentment toward the world and those he blames for his failures. He is meticulous and precise, traits that reflect his background in lens grinding and polishing, and he channels these into the creation and use of his specialized weaponry.

His demeanor often combines the refinement of a businessman with the bitterness of a man betrayed by fortune, giving him a calculating edge. He is pragmatic, willing to ally with other criminals and larger organizations if it benefits him, but his focus on his own survival and goals always remains clear. Beneath it all, he is defined by a sense of pride in his craft and an obsessive reliance on his lens-based tools, which represent both his past life and his descent into villainy.

The Monocle possesses skills in business management, a reflection of his former career as an honest tradesman before his turn to crime. His primary ability lies in his use of specialized optical weapons, most notably his signature monocle, which is capable of emitting deadly laser beams.
