During an experiment, Dr. Curtis Connors accidentally turned himself into a ferocious reptilian monster who seeks to turn humans into lizards like himself. The Lizard is one of Spider-Man’s oldest and deadliest foes while ironically, his alter ego is a close friend and former teacher of Spidey’s alter ego, Peter Parker. Dr. Curtis “Curt” Connors was born and raised in Coral Gables, Florida, eventually earning twin doctorates in biology and biochemistry. During medical school he met his future wife Martha, and together they had their son Billy. Connors became a brilliant surgeon and enlisted in the U.S. Army, performing emergency battlefield operations until a wartime explosion destroyed his right arm, forcing its amputation. Returning home, he dedicated his life to developing a reptile-based serum that could regenerate lost limbs. His formula successfully regrew his missing arm, but the reptilian DNA rewrote his own genetic structure and transformed him into the Lizard. After Spider-Man cured him back into human form, Connors suffered multiple relapses, each triggered by new attempts to refine his serum or by physical and emotional stress.

Over the years Connors frequently aided Spider-Man in scientific crises while also repeatedly succumbing to the Lizard persona. His transformations required help from allies such as Professor Xavier and the X-Men, Batwing, Man-Thing, and even Morbius. Connors created cures for others—including Aunt May during her radiation illness, Stegron’s dinosaur mutations, John Jameson’s Man-Wolf condition, and even multiple emergencies involving Spider-Man himself. But each cure or experiment risked reawakening the Lizard, leading to cycles of mutation, violence, and recovery. Connors’ family suffered greatly as a result: Billy was repeatedly endangered or kidnapped, and Martha eventually died from radiation poisoning, a loss that triggered another Lizard transformation.

Connors’ relationship with the Lizard evolved from simple physical transformation into a complex psychological battle. At times he maintained partial control; at others the Lizard attempted to replace humanity with a reptilian species, create an army of mutated creatures, or build devices to permanently destroy Connors’ human side. These conflicts involved Spider-Man, the Maggia, Stegron, the Owl, Morbius, Calypso, Spencer Smythe, and numerous other adversaries. The Lizard even served on villain teams such as the Sinister Twelve and an alternate Sinister Six. Connors was once abducted by the Beyonder and forced into combat during the Secret Wars, later returning home with help from Spider-Man.

Despite frequent cures, Connors never remained healed for long. Demonic energies during Inferno forced another transformation, followed by Calypso’s voodoo manipulation, attacks during Billy’s birthday, and crises involving Iguana, Spider-Lizard, and various mutation-based emergencies. He once surrendered to the court, requesting imprisonment with a lab so he could repay society through scientific work. Later, after escaping prison following Calypso’s death, Connors battled a new reptilian impostor Lizard and regained control with Spider-Man’s help.

Years later, tragedy struck when Connors—lost in the Lizard persona—killed his own son, Billy. That act destroyed Curt’s remaining humanity and birthed a new, more monstrous form known as Shed, combining the Lizard’s savagery with Connors’ intellect. Shed defeated Spider-Man and created human “pets” in its lair, but Spider-Man eventually used a modified serum to make himself immune to Shed’s psychic influence and forced the creature to confront memories of Billy, shaming it into fleeing.

Later, when various villains were hired to capture Lily Hollister’s newborn child, the Lizard kidnapped the infant and performed tests, determining the baby was not Norman Osborn’s biological son. In the ensuing conflict, he controlled Doctor Octopus into fighting Spider-Man until Ock regained his mind, allowing Spider-Man to escape with the child. Connors’ ongoing struggle between humanity and monstrosity continued, marked by brief recoveries, forced transformations, and escalating instability as the Lizard’s instincts grew stronger than ever.

Appearance: The Lizard has bright green reptilian skin, textured with thick, rounded scales across his head, limbs, and tail. His eyes are yellow with narrow, slit-like pupils that stand out sharply against the surrounding scales. His mouth is wide and lined with several rows of small, pointed teeth visible even when closed. The scales vary slightly in size, larger along the top of his head and snout and smaller around the jaw and neck. He is wearing a torn white lab coat hanging open, the sleeves ripped unevenly around the biceps to expose his scaled arms. Beneath it is a solid black shirt that clings tightly to his torso. His pants are bright purple, frayed at the hems where they meet the scaly skin of his calves. His feet are fully transformed into large green reptilian feet with long, curved claws extending from each toe. A long, thick green tail extends from behind him, segmented by ringed scales that run its entire length and taper to a narrow tip.

Personality: Curt Connors is gentle, soft-spoken, brilliant, and deeply empathetic, always trying to help others even when carrying immense guilt. He speaks carefully, thinks analytically, and constantly worries about the consequences of his own genius.

The Lizard, however, is cold, predatory, and instinct-driven, speaking with clinical disdain for humanity and treating emotions as weaknesses. He is cunning, territorial, and fascinated by the idea of evolution, always framing his actions as logical steps toward a reptilian ideal.

Together, the two form a fractured psyche: Curt tries to remain calm, polite, and rational, while the Lizard surfaces as a sharper, crueler voice that interrupts, taunts, and pressures him. The tension between them creates a constant undercurrent of fear, restraint, and uneasy cooperation—Curt wanting to protect others, and the Lizard craving dominance and “perfection.”

While transformed into the Lizard, Curt Connors gains a full suite of superhuman abilities produced by his altered reptilian physiology. His strength increases dramatically, allowing him to lift roughly twelve tons and leap high into the air with powerful leg muscles. His speed rises far beyond human limits, enabling him to sprint at around forty-five miles per hour. He also gains immense stamina, capable of exerting himself at peak output for nearly a full day before fatigue begins to affect him. His durability increases as well; his scaly hide and dense musculature allow him to withstand heavy impacts, long drops, and even small-caliber gunfire without serious harm. His agility and reflexes sharpen to levels no human athlete can match, giving him fluid balance, rapid reaction times, and extreme bodily control.

The transformation also grants him an advanced regenerative healing factor. Even severe injuries can be repaired quickly, and he is capable of fully regenerating lost limbs. In this form he possesses a long, powerful tail capable of striking with enough force to break concrete. The tail can even be shed and regrown if necessary. His fingers and toes develop razor-sharp claws, and his mouth fills with sharp fangs, both able to tear through materials like wood, stone, and even certain metals. Like a gecko, he can cling to and scale vertical surfaces with ease. In addition to his physical changes, the Lizard has psionic abilities that allow him to communicate with and control reptilian creatures within a two-mile radius, and in his later monstrous evolution—Shed—he can activate the primitive reptile impulses in human brains, reducing them to instinct-driven behavior.

Even outside his transformations, Curt Connors retains his genius-level intellect. He is a world-class biochemist and herpetologist whose scientific expertise rivals some of the greatest minds of his era.

Historically, the Lizard form carried weaknesses. Exposure to extreme cold could weaken his strength and agility, and intense emotional or physical stress could trigger an involuntary transformation, dragging Curt into the reptilian state against his will.
