Samuel Sterns was originally a simple minded high school dropout who worked the night shift at a chemical research plant. His life changed forever when a canister of radioactive waste exploded, bathing him in a lethal dose of gamma radiation that he miraculously survived. Instead of gaining physical strength, Sterns experienced a massive surge in his intellectual capacity, becoming a genius with a computer like memory. As his mutation progressed, his skin turned green and his cranium expanded to accommodate his growing brain. Adopting the name of the Leader, he began a lifelong obsession with world domination and became the primary intellectual rival to Bruce Banner and the Hulk.

His early career was defined by elaborate scientific schemes, including the construction of a sentient space station and attempts to rewrite human history through time travel. After briefly losing his intelligence and working as a coroner, he regained his powers by siphoning gamma energy from Rick Jones, which left him with an even more distorted and misshapen head. One of his most horrific acts involved detonating a gamma bomb in Middletown, Arizona, which killed five thousand people. He used the survivors to populate his hidden Arctic city of Freehold, where he attempted to play the role of a benevolent savior while secretly experimenting on the nature of life and death.

The Leader eventually founded the Intelligencia, a group of the world's most brilliant villains, to facilitate the exchange of criminal information. This group was responsible for the creation of the Red Hulk and the Red She Hulk through a combination of cosmic and gamma radiation. During this period, Sterns was depowered and then re irradiated with red gamma energy, transforming him into the Red Leader and a temporary member of the Thunderbolts. His path eventually led him to a contract with the demon Mephisto after a series of failures, though he eventually escaped the hell realm only to be depowered once more by the Doc Green personality of the Hulk.

In his most recent and dangerous iteration, the Leader transitioned from a mad scientist into a master of occult gamma knowledge. He discovered the existence of the Below Place and the Green Door, the metaphysical pathways that allow gamma mutates to return from death. By devouring the mind of Brian Banner and absorbing his essence, the Leader gained a direct connection to the One Below All, a malevolent entity residing at the bottom of all things. He now seeks to manipulate the very fabric of life and death to ensure that he remains the sole survivor of the multiverse, moving beyond simple world conquest to achieve a dark and cosmic enlightenment.

Appearance: The Leader has green skin. His cranium is drastically elongated vertically, forming a tall, cylindrical shape that rises high above his brow. Short black hair is slicked back along the sides and the very top of this extended skull. His eyes are green. He wears a form-fitting bodysuit in shades of orange and yellow. The shoulders are covered by yellow pads with a ribbed texture. The chest features a black T-shaped design set against an orange background, with two vertical yellow rectangular plates positioned on the upper chest. A wide, flat yellow panel wraps around his waist. His arms are covered in orange sleeves that end in long yellow gloves reaching mid-forearm. His legs are encased in tight orange trousers. He wears tall yellow boots that extend up to his knees.

Personality: The Leader is an entity of pure and cold intellect who views every interaction as a sequence in a grander calculation. He possesses an insufferable arrogance and treats everyone around him as primitive specimens whose thought processes are as predictable as simple arithmetic. He does not converse so much as he lectures, using a precise and formal vocabulary to remind others of their inherent mental inferiority. His patience is non-existent for those who cannot grasp his complex directives immediately, and he often reacts to failure with a chilling and detached disappointment.

His core motivation is an all-consuming obsession with the Hulk, a creature he views as the ultimate physical puzzle to be solved or dominated. This fixation often clouds his better judgment, turning his brilliant strategies into personal vendettas. He is a master manipulator who feels no empathy, seeing human emotions as mere chemical weaknesses to be exploited for his own ends. Even when facing defeat, he remains convinced of his ultimate victory because he believes his superior mind is the only constant in an otherwise chaotic and illogical universe.

The Leader possesses a superhuman mental acumen that allows him to master any worldly subject and adopt concepts entirely foreign to his environment. His enhanced intuition and pattern solving abilities are so advanced that his tactical predictions often border on clairvoyance. With a perfect memory of every moment since his gamma accident, he can retrieve information with computer like accuracy. While he originally lost his memories when reverting to his human form as Sam Sterns, Sterns has gradually become more intelligent with each transformation, although he remains far below the cognitive level of his gamma irradiated persona.

Beyond his intellect, the Leader wields formidable psionic powers including mind control over weak willed individuals and high level telekinesis. He is capable of emitting concentrated mental bolts of psionic energy from his forehead and has even demonstrated the ability to project raw gamma radiation during his time as the Red Leader. His status as a gamma mutate grants him a form of immortality through self resurrection. Whenever he dies, he passes through the metaphysical Green Door to return to life, ensuring his consciousness persists across different bodies and timelines.

His expertise spans the fields of genetics, physics, and robotics, enabling him to design sophisticated weaponry and artificial intelligences like the sentient space station Omnivac. He is perhaps best known for creating the Humanoids, an army of synthetic androids that range in size from microscopic to hundreds of feet tall. His mastery of genetic engineering and radiation manipulation allows him to craft tools specifically designed to exploit the weaknesses of his enemies, such as devices that can telepathically influence the Hulk or the Rhino.

Despite these near limitless capabilities, the Leader is frequently undermined by his own arrogance, immaturity, and obsessive focus on the Hulk. His ego often leads him to pursue impractical schemes, like attempting to forcibly mutate the entire human race into beings like himself. In physical combat, he relies on technology like the Kinetron Mitts, which are mechanical gauntlets designed to reflect the kinetic energy of the Hulk's own strikes back at him. This reliance on superior technology and strategic planning reflects his belief that his mental superiority is the only force capable of taming a monster of pure physical rage.
