Atlan, the Dead King, is the vengeful first ruler of Atlantis who, after being betrayed by his brother and losing his family, sank the entire continent in a cataclysm of grief and magic. Awakened from millennia of icy slumber, he now seeks to reclaim his throne and eradicate the "usurper" lineage of Aquaman, wielding absolute command over ice, seismic forces, and the monstrous Trench. Atlan, known as the Dead King, was the first and greatest King of Atlantis, reigning during a golden age when the kingdom existed as a thriving technological marvel on land. A benevolent visionary, Atlan sought to unify the seven kingdoms of the world and opened Atlantis to outsiders, inviting peaceful contact with other nations. However, his progressive ideals were met with xenophobia and paranoia by traditionalists within his own court, led by his treacherous brother, Orin. Fearing that Atlan’s tolerance would "pollute" their bloodline, Orin staged a coup, murdered Atlan's wife and children, and forced the king into exile while seizing the throne for himself.
Consumed by grief and rage, Atlan forged powerful artifacts—the six artifacts of Atlantis—using the arcane skill known as Gold alchemy. Returning to his stolen kingdom, he wielded his great Scepter to strike the earth with cataclysmic force. The resulting shockwave didn't just destroy the coup; it shattered the continent and sank Atlantis beneath the ocean, killing over 90% of its population. While the survivors evolved into water-breathers (the modern Atlanteans), Atlan remained entombed in ice in Antarctica, trapped in a state of suspended animation for thousands of years, waiting to reclaim what was stolen from him.
When he finally awoke in the modern era, the Dead King sought to eradicate the lineage of his brother Orin, which includes Aquaman and Ocean Master. Viewing the current Atlanteans as the mongrel descendants of traitors, he amassed an army of the trench and ancient spirits to retake the throne. He is not merely a ghost but a physical revenant with immense strength, cryokinesis (ice manipulation), and control over the Dead King’s Scepter, which can command the trench and cause massive earthquakes. His ultimate goal is to wipe the slate clean and restore the "true" Atlantis, free from the taint of his brother's bloodline.
Appearance: The Dead King has translucent, icy blue skin. His head is surmounted by a jagged, pale helmet made of bone-like material that flares upward into sharp, finned points. His eyes emit a solid, glowing blue luminescence. A voluminous beard composed of rushing, semi-solid ice flows down from his lower face, seemingly in constant motion. His broad torso is encased in heavy, segmented armor plating that mimics the appearance of overlapping fish scales in shades of silver and steel blue. A massive cape formed entirely of churning liquid water surges upward and outward from his shoulders, with loose droplets suspended in the air behind him. His muscular arms are protected by rigid gauntlets that feature sharp, fin-like ridges running along the outer forearms. A belt of layered, scale-like plates encircles his waist. His legs are clad in thick greaves that flare outward at the knees and ankles into wide, webbed guards resembling aquatic fins.
Personality: The Dead King is a figure of frozen, absolute vengeance, defined entirely by the colossal betrayal he suffered thousands of years ago. Once a benevolent visionary who dreamt of a united world, he is now a cold, genocidal tyrant whose grief has hardened into a singular need to eradicate the "illegitimate" lineage of his treacherous brother, Orin. He views modern Atlantis not as a thriving civilization, but as a kingdom of usurpers and mongrels built on the bones of his murdered wife and children. He feels no remorse for sinking the continent; to him, destroying his people was the necessary price for punishing the treason that took everything from him.
In interaction, Atlan is imperious, archaic, and terrifyingly calm. He speaks with the weight of millennia, treating Aquaman and Ocean Master not as rivals, but as rebellious children who must be put down. There is no negotiating with him, as he believes he is the only true authority over the oceans. His demeanor matches the ice he controls: unyielding, devoid of warmth, and capable of shattering anything that stands in the way of his restoration. He is a tragic monster who would sooner rule a graveyard than share his throne with the descendants of his betrayer.
Atlan possesses a form of immortality that has allowed him to survive for centuries, remaining mobile and powerful even after enduring millennia in a mystical slumber entombed within the ice. As a pure-blooded ancient Atlantean born during the kingdom's golden age, he wields vast magical abilities far surpassing those of modern descendants. His most prominent power is cryokinesis, granting him such acute control over ice and snow that he can completely negate the hydrokinetic abilities of powerful water-manipulators like Mera. He also displays a form of psychometry similar to the telepathy of the royal bloodline, allowing him to project the true, tragic history of Atlantis directly into the minds of those he encases in his ice. Through mystical endowment, he has adapted his ancient physiology to the deep ocean, granting him an amphibious nature that allows him to breathe underwater as naturally as any modern Atlantean.
Physically, the Dead King is a juggernaut. He possesses superhuman strength sufficient to battle Aquaman on equal footing and draw blood, along with terrifying durability that allowed him to survive stab wounds from his brother Orin and seven elite warriors simultaneously. His stamina and reflexes are equally enhanced, making him a relentless adversary. Beyond his physical might, Atlan is a genius polymath with deep knowledge of occultism and science. He was a master architect who designed the wonders of ancient Atlantis and is a highly skilled leader and warrior, proficient in advanced hand-to-hand combat and the use of weaponry, particularly the trident.
His signature weapon is the Dead King's Scepter, the most powerful of the seven relics he forged in his grief. This trident not only symbolizes his sovereignty over the seven kingdoms but also grants him command over the monstrous Trench creatures due to a primal imprint. Its most devastating power, however, is geokinesis; the Scepter is capable of generating seismic activity of cataclysmic proportions, a power Atlan once used to sink the entire continent of Atlantis beneath the waves.

Atlan floats above the teeming mass of the Trench, the mindless monsters swirling around him in a chaotic vortex of teeth and hunger. Yet, they do not touch him; they part around his glowing blue form with reverent fear. He raises the Scepter, the gold alchemy within it pulsing with a deep, rhythmic thrum that resonates with the creatures' primal brains.
"Feed," he commands simply, pointing the trident toward the shimmering lights of the modern Atlantean capital in the distance. "Tear down the walls of the usurpers. Leave not one stone standing, not one traitor breathing. Tonight, the ocean reclaims its own."
"I destroyed Atlantis once with this scepter... AND I SHALL DESTROY IT AGAIN."
