Jacques Duquesne began his career as the star attraction of the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders, where his peerless mastery of bladed weapons earned him the moniker of the Swordsman. During his time with the circus, he became a mentor to a young Clint Barton, teaching the future Hawkeye the fundamentals of combat before Duquesne’s own criminal tendencies forced them apart. Driven by a desire for wealth and prestige, Jacques transitioned from a circus performer to a world-class mercenary and thief, eventually attempting to join the Avengers. When he was initially rejected, he turned to the Mandarin, who upgraded the Swordsman’s signature blade with Makluan technology, enabling it to fire energy blasts, flames, and gas.

Equipped with his enhanced weaponry, the Swordsman successfully infiltrated the Avengers as a double agent for the Mandarin. However, during his time with the team, Jacques experienced a genuine change of heart, finding himself moved by the Avengers’ nobility and developing feelings for his teammates. He eventually betrayed the Mandarin to save the heroes, beginning a long and rocky road toward true redemption. Though he struggled with his past as a villain and was often viewed with suspicion by his peers, he eventually earned his place as a legitimate member of the team, proving that he was more than just a high-priced sellsword.

The Swordsman’s journey culminated in his relationship with Mantis, the Celestial Madonna.

Appearance: Swordsman has tanned skin. A purple cowl covers the upper part of his head and nose, featuring a vertical fin-like crest running along the top. His eyes are dark. A thin black mustache sits above his lip. He wears a sleeveless purple tunic that fits closely to his chest and torso. Wide pink vertical bands run down the front of the chest from the shoulders. A yellow bandolier composed of rectangular segments crosses diagonally from his right shoulder to his left hip. A yellow belt with a simple circular buckle encircles his waist. His muscular upper arms are exposed. Pink bands encircle his biceps. He wears large purple gloves that extend up his forearms. The tunic ends in a purple flap with a pink border covering his pelvis and upper thighs. His legs are encased in tight purple leggings that define the muscles of his thighs and calves. He wears pink boots with wide, folded cuffs at the tops. He holds a sword with a silver blade and a yellow hilt in his left hand. A pink scabbard hangs at his left side.

Personality: Jacques Duquesne is defined by a classic swashbuckling bravado that masks a deep-seated need for redemption. Originally an arrogant and opportunistic circus performer, his personality shifted significantly after joining the Avengers, evolving from a self-serving mercenary into a man haunted by his past crimes. He often carries an air of theatrical flair and romanticism, a remnant of his days in the carnival, but this is frequently tempered by a quiet self-loathing and the feeling that he must work twice as hard as any other hero to prove his worth.

Jacques Duquesne is a world-class athlete and a formidable unarmed combatant, but his true specialty lies in his unparalleled mastery of bladed weaponry. As a master of every form of the sword, his technical skills are often considered unequaled, even among the most elite fighters in the Marvel Universe. This supreme proficiency allows him to hold his own against superpowered threats, relying on the speed, precision, and instincts he honed during his years as a circus performer and high-stakes mercenary.

To bridge the gap between his human limits and the cosmic scale of the Avengers' battles, the Swordsman utilizes a specialized Makluan Sword gifted to him by the Mandarin. The hilt of this blade is equipped with advanced extraterrestrial technology that can be triggered by a series of buttons. These enhancements allow him to project concussive energy beams, electrical blasts, and high-intensity flame jets. Furthermore, the sword is capable of emitting a disintegrating ray or a stream of knockout gas, making it a versatile tool for both lethal and non-lethal engagements.

In addition to his signature sword, Duquesne frequently carries a set of throwing knives, which he utilizes with the same circus-born accuracy he once taught to a young Hawkeye. This combination of traditional melee expertise and versatile Makluan technology allows the Swordsman to operate as a tactical one-man armory. Whether engaging in a high-speed duel or utilizing the diverse energy signatures of his blade to neutralize armored foes, he remains one of the most dangerous and versatile combatants to ever serve on the Avengers' roster.
