Stick’s past is shrouded in mystery. Possibly born in New York and blind since birth, he claimed to be the reincarnation of Yamato-Takeru, a legendary Japanese hero. Trained in mysticism by the Ancient One as a teen, Stick honed his other senses to superhuman levels, concealing his blindness and mastering martial arts. He eventually became leader of the Chaste, an elite order dedicated to opposing the Hand, a demonic ninja cult serving the Beast. Members of the Chaste trained in combat and psionic abilities, bound by discipline to reject hatred and destructive emotion.

Stick discovered young Matt Murdock after his accident and trained him to master his heightened senses and radar-like perception, alongside rigorous martial combat. Later, he also trained Elektra Natchios, but expelled her when she could not overcome her hatred, leading her toward the Hand. Though harsh, Stick’s teachings shaped both into formidable warriors.

In New York, Stick occasionally monitored Daredevil, often in pool halls and bars. He clashed with Daredevil over recklessness, but also guided him through grueling retraining when Matt lost his radar sense, pushing him past his limits until it returned. Stick played a central role in the Hand–Chaste conflict, ultimately sacrificing his life alongside Shaft by draining their enemies’ life force to save Daredevil and Black Widow.

Though believed dead, Stick later appeared in unusual circumstances. He attended Deadpool’s roast among other blind heroes. During the Collector’s Contest of Champions, he was resurrected, manipulated events against Maestro, and returned to his world after helping end the contest. More recently, he resurfaced in Cairo, working with Elektra to oppose a Hand plot involving the Third Eye of Agamotto and a Symbiote, revealing his continued vigilance against the clan’s schemes.

Appearance: An older, lean man with a weathered face and deep lines, dressed in a gray t-shirt, olive jacket, and brown pants. He wears a olive green hat and dark glasses.

Stick’s most notable power was his unique Radar Sense, an ability that allowed him to perceive the shapes and locations of objects around him despite his blindness. This radar was sharper than Daredevil’s own, and Stick insisted it could be developed through training rather than mutation or accident, having even re-taught Matt to use his powers when he lost them. His perception extended further with a sonar-like ability, using faint echoes from even the slightest sounds to map his surroundings. Alongside this, his senses of taste, touch, and smell were trained to extraordinary levels, rivaling or surpassing those of Daredevil, which Stick attributed entirely to discipline and practice rather than any external cause.

Beyond his heightened senses, Stick was a master of chi manipulation. He could channel his energy to achieve effects ranging from telepathic communication to life-draining techniques that could dissolve a victim’s body. In extreme cases, he demonstrated the ability to transfer his life force into a lifeless body to escape death, prolonging his influence and survival. He also showed capacity for astral projection, appearing in spectral form to guide or advise his students, even beyond death. These mystical abilities were not fully cataloged, but they cemented him as a figure who blended martial mastery with profound spiritual power.

Stick’s skills as a martial artist were equally formidable. He was a grandmaster in numerous Asian martial arts, particularly the traditions of ninjutsu. His combat prowess was so refined that neither Daredevil nor Elektra could gain the upper hand against him in sparring, despite their own exceptional skill. He could move so silently that even Daredevil’s radar and acute hearing could not detect him. With decades of training and battle experience, Stick possessed an almost precognitive awareness of threats, responding with flawless timing to danger.

His mastery extended to weaponry, though his preferred armament was always the long wooden staff that earned him his name. In his hands, the weapon became an extension of his body, allowing him to dominate both armed and unarmed opponents with equal efficiency. Despite his blindness, his Radar Sense and honed senses compensated fully, leaving him at no disadvantage in combat.
