Mac Gargan, once a private investigator, became the Scorpion after undergoing an experimental procedure that granted him enhanced strength, speed, and a powerful prehensile tail. Consumed by hatred for Spider-Man and twisted by his transformation, he became one of the wall-crawler’s most relentless and vengeful enemies. (More Marvel Characters in Profile)

MacDonald “Mac” Gargan began his story as a private investigator hired by Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson to uncover how Peter Parker managed to get remarkable photographs of Spider-Man. Despite his efforts, Parker’s spider-sense made Gargan’s surveillance attempts futile. Frustrated by failure, Jameson paid Gargan $10,000 to volunteer for an experimental procedure by Dr. Farley Stillwell, designed to endow a human with animal characteristics. The procedure granted Gargan the proportional abilities of a scorpion—but it also shattered his sanity, transforming him into the violent supervillain known as the Scorpion. Gargan repeatedly targeted Spider-Man and Jameson, blaming both for his misfortunes, and even attempted to murder Jameson on his wedding day, only to be thwarted.

Gargan’s early criminal career was marked by repeated defeats. He was easily overpowered by Captain America while tailing S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter and later teamed up with Mister Hyde to attack S.H.I.E.L.D. again, kidnapping Carter before being defeated once more. Even minor confrontations went poorly, such as when the novice superhero Jewel accidentally subdued him during a robbery. Gargan sought help from the Jackal to locate Spider-Man but ended up threatening Aunt May in a hospital, only for Spider-Man to beat him and force him to apologize to her. Upgrades from A.I.M. enhanced his tail with acid attacks, but Ms. Marvel stopped his attempted revenge on Jameson. He briefly joined Egghead’s Masters of Evil, but their plans collapsed prematurely, and Gargan wasn’t invited back.

Various criminal organizations tried to make use of Scorpion’s abilities. Justin Hammer upgraded his weaponry, but Gargan’s instability caused him to botch missions, leading Hammer to send Rhino and Blacklash to punish him. He clashed with Alpha Flight after being manipulated into attacking Canada and later had his tail upgraded by the Tinkerer, though he was defeated again during a fight involving Spider-Slayers. Gargan’s sanity deteriorated further, and he lived in the sewers for a time before resurfacing as a hired gun for Roxxon Oil, once again kidnapping Jameson and being stopped by Spider-Man with Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Corporate backers repeatedly upgraded his suit, including one incident at Tricorp, but Spider-Man always defeated him.

Gargan continued his vendetta against Jameson, even attempting assassination during a defamation trial. He was among the villains hired by Lucia von Bardas for a terrorist attack linked to a “Secret War,” but the plot failed, and he was arrested. Later, Norman Osborn recruited Gargan, revealed Spider-Man’s identity, and tasked him with kidnapping Aunt May. During this mission, the Venom symbiote, seeking a new host who shared its hatred of Spider-Man, bonded with Gargan despite his initial resistance. As the new Venom, Gargan became far more dangerous and was part of the Sinister Twelve, nearly defeating Spider-Man until the Avengers and Fantastic Four intervened. Spider-Man eventually dropped a building on Gargan, and Venom was imprisoned in Ryker’s Island, where he swore never to reveal Spider-Man’s identity.

Gargan escaped and traveled to Battleworld for a contest of champions before joining the Thunderbolts, a government-run team tasked with capturing fugitive heroes. Fitted with electrical implants to suppress the symbiote’s bloodlust, he gained public fame as a hero. However, the symbiote’s influence grew, and Gargan’s addiction to its power deepened. He lost control multiple times, maimed heroes like Steel Spider, and even devoured people during violent outbursts. Psychological manipulation caused him to hallucinate the symbiote threatening to consume him, driving him into further madness. Gargan was wounded fighting Swordsman but survived thanks to the symbiote’s regenerative abilities and became increasingly monstrous, rarely reverting to human form.

Osborn later sent Gargan to hunt Namor, and though he initially succeeded in injuring him, Namor overpowered him. During the “New Ways to Die” storyline, Gargan and the Thunderbolts were sent to capture Spider-Man, leading to a confrontation with Eddie Brock, now Anti-Venom. The Venom symbiote tried to return to Brock but was repelled, and Brock’s powers nearly destroyed it. Norman Osborn created a poison to counter Anti-Venom’s abilities, injecting Gargan and equipping him with a new Scorpion battlesuit. As “Ven-orpion,” Gargan fought Anti-Venom and nearly killed him before the Venom symbiote intervened, destroyed the suit, and spared Brock.

During the Skrull invasion, Gargan played a key role in fighting the alien infiltrators and joined the final battle to repel them. Afterward, Osborn ordered the Thunderbolts to kill their teammate Songbird, and Gargan nearly devoured her. With Osborn now head of national security, Gargan joined the Dark Avengers and posed as Spider-Man, taking medication to control the symbiote. He relished his new public image but continued his violent habits, maiming criminals and hoarding loot. He also harassed Mayor Jameson, planting evidence and inciting gang wars to ruin his reputation. However, the medication caused complications, leaving Gargan unstable and unfit for duty. During the Dark Avengers’ attack on Asgard, he was torn from the symbiote by Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel and arrested with the rest of the team.

Back in the Raft, the Venom symbiote was removed, and Gargan’s health deteriorated without it. Alistair Smythe freed him and provided a new Scorpion suit, planning revenge on Jameson. They were defeated by Spider-Man and the New Avengers, though Smythe killed Jameson’s wife, Marla. Later, while Otto Octavius inhabited Spider-Man’s body, he summoned Scorpion and other villains to help him escape prison. During a confrontation, Otto nearly killed Scorpion by breaking his jaw, though Gargan survived and required reconstructive apparatuses. Enhanced by Smythe’s Spider-Slayers, Gargan accepted an offer to kill Spider-Man but was defeated again.

Gargan later battled Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099, mistaking him for the original. O’Hara tricked Spider-Slayers into attacking Gargan, allowing him to win. Gargan became an enforcer for Black Cat’s criminal empire and grew suspicious of Lee Price, later revealed as Venom. He attempted to kill Price but was overpowered and saved from death by Spider-Man. Gargan tried to kill Eddie Brock out of hatred for the symbiote but was defeated when Brock exploited his fear of it.

When Lee Price became Maniac and tried to seize control of New York’s criminal underworld, Gargan was infected by the Maniac symbiote, reawakening remnants of Venom inside him and transforming him into a monstrous version of himself. Flash Thompson, as Anti-Venom, eventually freed him. Gargan later struck a deal with the government to host a new symbiote spawn as part of a Symbiote Task Force but was stopped by Spider-Woman before he could claim it. He returned to crime and joined the Savage Six in Kraven’s Great Hunt, where he and other animal-themed villains were captured and forced into deadly combat before being imprisoned again.

During “Absolute Carnage,” Gargan fought Miles Morales and symbiote-spawned creatures sent by Cletus Kasady but was left paralyzed after being attacked by a Carnage-infected Norman Osborn. Norman, now sane, gave Gargan a job at Ravencroft Institute and a high-tech wheelchair. Blaming Venom for ruining his life, Gargan built a makeshift War Machine-style suit, dubbed himself Virus, and launched a vendetta against Venom. He ambushed Eddie Brock, nearly killing him before being forced to retreat. He followed Venom and Dylan Brock through an interdimensional portal to Earth-1051, a world conquered by symbiotes, where he fought Venom and was captured by Codex. Bonded to a new symbiote, Gargan reverted to Scorpion, but Venom and Dylan eventually destroyed it, and Gargan led them to Codex in exchange for his life.

After returning to Earth-616, Gargan reclaimed his Virus armor but was defeated by Mister Fantastic, who disabled it with an electromagnetic pulse. He was imprisoned again but eventually escaped and rejoined the Savage Six, seeking revenge by attacking a film premiere.

Appearance: Scorpion is a tall, heavily built figure encased in a segmented green suit with darker green paneling accentuating his muscular frame. The bodysuit is sleek, form-fitting, and green in color, composed of overlapping plates that mimic an exoskeletal pattern along his chest, arms, and legs. His hands and feet are fully covered, the gloves and boots merging seamlessly with the rest of the suit. His face is mostly concealed beneath a matching green mask that leaves only his mouth exposed. The mask features a sharp, black angular section around his eyes. Extending from the base of his back is a massive, segmented tail — thick, flexible, and arched high above him before curving forward like a striking weapon. The tail is lined with distinct metallic ridges and ends in a wide, flared stinger-like tip. He also occasionally has green claw-like pincers on his hands.

Personality: Mac Gargan is driven by bitterness, resentment, and a festering sense of injustice that defines nearly every aspect of his personality. He is volatile and confrontational, prone to violent outbursts when provoked and harboring deep grudges against those he believes wronged him—especially J. Jonah Jameson and Spider-Man. His hatred runs deep and personal, and he often lets it cloud his judgment, prioritizing revenge over strategy even when it sabotages his own goals. Gargan is fiercely prideful but insecure, constantly trying to prove his worth and strength to a world he feels has humiliated and discarded him.

He is reckless and impulsive, thriving on intimidation and brute force rather than careful planning. He enjoys causing fear and pain, often lashing out simply to assert dominance, yet he despises being treated as a joke or a pawn. Despite his bluster, Gargan is deeply insecure about his repeated failures and the humiliations he’s suffered, and this insecurity fuels much of his rage and cruelty. He is easily manipulated by promises of power or revenge but resents anyone who tries to control him, often turning on his allies when his pride is wounded.

Mac Gargan is a human–scorpion hybrid with superhuman strength (originally around 15 tons, later ~20 tons with upgrades), speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes. He can cling to surfaces and typically climbs by punching handholds, though he can adhere like a wall-crawler when needed. During his tenure as Venom he retained his scorpion traits while gaining symbiote abilities; after the symbiote’s removal and the destruction of his upgraded armor, he reverted to his baseline Scorpion power set.

He retains some investigative skill from his private-investigator days and is a formidable combatant despite limited formal training. His mutation is unstable: without his Scorpion suit or a stabilizing symbiote, it is lethal to him. After Carnage damaged his spine, he suffered paralysis of his legs.

Gargan’s Scorpion suit has seen many revisions from third-party suppliers (Stillwell, Justin Hammer, others). The modern configuration layers Kevlar, heavy insulation, and composite armor, providing protection up to small-arms fire. Its signature is the electro-mechanical tail—cybernetically linked to his spine and driven by internal solenoids and cable matrices—capable of whipping at over 90 mph (up to ~150 ft/s), spring-launching him over thirty feet, and functioning as a fifth limb. Depending on the version, the tail ranged from 4 to ~20 feet (about 10 feet pre-symbiote) and has been upgraded with a spike, venomous barb or hypnogen, electrical discharges (including shocking grabbers or shorting equipment), lasers, acid, mace gas, and projectile functions. He has destroyed at least one heavily upgraded suit (during a ruse involving the Venom symbiote) and later reverted to his original costume. Some models included transparent eye membranes to dissolve webbing, and his gloves have integrated micro-pincers that can tear through webbing.
