Wesley Dodds grew up haunted by his father’s accounts of the Great War, particularly the horrors of gas attacks. As an adult, he pursued chemistry, determined to create a humane weapon that could incapacitate enemies without killing them. After many failures, he succeeded in creating a powerful sleep gas. When military officials mocked his work and dismissed its use, Dodds decided to prove its value himself. Donning a gas mask and trench coat, he became the Sandman, leaving criminals unconscious with his gas amid the evidence of their crimes.

He became a founding member of the Justice Society of America, present at their first meeting in 1940 and early wartime activities. Alongside the JSA, Dodds confronted Nazi time-traveler Per Degaton and later fought on the front lines of World War II, clashing with the Injustice Society in Austria. He often relied on both his fists and his sleep gas to end battles, once personally subduing the Gambler.

Dodds eventually adopted a more colorful yellow-and-purple costume and took on a sidekick, Sandy the Golden Boy. Together, they joined other heroes like the Losers, Blue Beetle, and the Bazooka Boys in liberating Nanda Parbat from General Electric’s robot army. Their efforts were aided by Forager and even Abominable Snowmen, though the guardian Rama Kushna erased their memories of the mission.

Wesley Dodds died later in life and was entombed with other fallen heroes in Valhalla Cemetery. His sidekick Sandy carried on his legacy, eventually becoming a member of the JSA in his own right. Though erased from history at one point, Dodds and the Justice Society were later restored to their rightful place in time.

Death did not end his battles. He was reanimated as a Black Lantern to serve in the war against the Batman Who Laughs. Batman himself would later make use of Sandman’s signature gas. More recently, Dodds was resurrected through Lazarus Resin by Deadman, returning once again to oppose the dream-manipulating Insomnia and prevent the villain from seizing the Nightmare Stone.

Appearance: Sandman wears a long, dark trench coat with a wide, flaring hem and a matching wide-brimmed fedora. His face is fully concealed by a World War I-style gas mask with round, glowing orange eyepieces and a prominent circular respirator. He is dressed in high-waisted trousers, polished dark shoes, a buttoned shirt, and a tie beneath the coat. A utility belt with cylindrical canisters is secured around his waist.

Personality: Wesley Dodds is calm, introspective, and quietly determined, guided by a deeply ingrained sense of justice and moral responsibility. He is thoughtful and methodical in everything he does, often approaching situations like a scientist — carefully observing, analyzing, and acting with precision. Haunted by the horrors of war and a desire to protect life, he believes in stopping evil without unnecessary violence, showing mercy even as he pursues justice relentlessly. Despite his reserved and somewhat somber nature, he is deeply compassionate and empathetic, always striving to shield others from suffering. His quiet confidence, strategic mind, and unwavering resolve make him both a formidable detective and a steadfast ally.

Wesley Dodds possesses the rare power of oneiromancy, which allows him to experience prophetic dreams that reveal glimpses of the future. These visions often guide his actions as the Sandman, enabling him to anticipate events and intervene before tragedies occur.

In addition to his prophetic abilities, Wesley is highly skilled in several areas. He is trained in acrobatics and proficient with firearms, giving him agility and precision in combat situations. His hand-to-hand combat skills, while basic, are effective enough to subdue opponents when necessary. Wesley is also adept at intimidation, often using his mysterious presence and eerie silence to instill fear in criminals. His scientific expertise, particularly in chemistry, was crucial in creating his signature sleep gas. Combined with his stealth and knowledge of weaponry, these abilities make him a formidable vigilante who can infiltrate, disable, and dismantle criminal operations efficiently.

Wesley also carries the psychological weight of his past. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, developed from hearing his veteran father’s haunting stories of World War I, particularly those involving the horrors of gas warfare. This trauma deeply influenced his worldview and ultimately shaped his mission as the Sandman.

His arsenal reflects this connection to the past. He wears a World War I-style gas mask to protect himself from his own sleep gas and to conceal his identity. His primary weapon is the Sandman’s gas gun, which delivers a powerful sleep-inducing gas, allowing him to incapacitate foes without lethal force.
