Reinhardt Wilhelm was a young Crusader serving with the German armed forces during the Omnic Crisis, fighting from the fortified town of Eichenwalde under the command of Balderich von Adler. Reinhardt was immensely strong and eager for glory, repeatedly charging ahead of his unit in search of greater battles. During the omnics’ assault on Eichenwalde, his recklessness left Balderich and the other Crusaders struggling to hold the line. Balderich was mortally wounded while defending the castle, and Reinhardt returned too late to save him. Balderich gave Reinhardt his Overwatch medal and entrusted him with the responsibility he had originally been chosen to carry. Reinhardt survived the battle and joined the newly formed Overwatch, carrying Balderich’s memory with him.

Reinhardt spent decades serving as one of Overwatch’s most recognizable front-line agents, fighting alongside its soldiers throughout the organization’s rise. Age eventually forced him into retirement, leaving him deeply frustrated at being separated from the work that had defined his life. After Overwatch collapsed, Reinhardt refused to remain inactive and traveled with Brigitte Lindholm, intervening wherever civilians were threatened and treating his wandering service as a continuation of the ideals he had sworn to uphold. When Winston transmitted the Overwatch recall, Reinhardt returned to Eichenwalde and confronted the memory of Balderich’s death. He finally accepted that honor was not found in chasing glorious battles but in protecting people who needed him, and he answered the recall.

Reinhardt joined the restored Overwatch and returned to active combat when Null Sector launched its worldwide invasion. He fought alongside the organization’s new and returning agents during the defense of Paris and remained with them as Overwatch deployed against further Null Sector attacks. Despite his age, Reinhardt continued placing himself at the center of the heaviest fighting, carrying the Crusader armor and hammer that had defined his service since the Omnic Crisis.

Appearance: Reinhardt has fair peach skin and an exceptionally tall, massively muscular build with an enormous chest, extremely broad shoulders, thick arms, a heavy waist, and huge powerful legs. His remaining eye is pale blue. His other eye is missing, with the eyelid permanently closed beneath a deep vertical scar that cuts through the brow and continues down across the socket. His hair is snow white, long enough at the crown to be gathered into a compact topknot, with shorter swept-back sections around the temples. He has an immense white beard that spreads broadly across his jaw and upper chest in thick layered locks, accompanied by an equally heavy mustache that extends outward before merging into the beard. His armor is predominantly silver and cool gunmetal gray, covering nearly his entire body in enormous overlapping plates. The chest is enclosed by a broad curved breastplate bearing a large raised silver lion emblem, with layered metallic facets forming the mane around the central animal head. Yellow armor covers much of the abdomen beneath it, bordered by narrow orange illuminated strips and darker mechanical sections. Thick brown straps descend from the shoulder area, secured with bright yellow hanging tabs and heavy metallic fixtures.

His shoulders are encased in colossal rounded pauldrons made from multiple silver-gray shells with black recessed sections, yellow inset panels, circular mechanical joints, and small red triangular markings. The right pauldron carries the black number “09.” His upper arms are surrounded by thick segmented armor with broad rounded plates, while his elbows and forearms expand into oversized mechanical guards with silver shells, dark joint material, yellow bands, and orange illuminated details. His hands are covered by enormous articulated gauntlets with individually plated fingers, thick knuckles, and yellow accents at the fingertips. One forearm incorporates a massive sculpted lion-head assembly made from interlocking silver plates, circular side mechanisms, angular fangs, and narrow orange illuminated slits within the face.

His waist consists of densely layered mechanical plating with circular joints and a large central silver guard extending down over the pelvis. Thick gray hip plates flare around the upper legs, connecting to immense thigh armor with smooth rounded shells and dark flexible material visible at the joints. His knees are protected by broad angular plates with black recessed sections and narrow orange illuminated bars. The lower legs are encased in huge silver-gray greaves assembled from overlapping plates around the calves and ankles. His armored boots are exceptionally large, with broad segmented toes, thick mechanical soles, circular ankle components, yellow inset sections, and angular heel projections.

Personality: Reinhardt is loud, exuberant, courageous, and intensely devoted to traditional ideas of honor. In his youth, he confused heroism with personal glory and treated battle as an opportunity to prove his strength. Balderich’s death permanently changed him, leaving Reinhardt far more conscious of the responsibility that comes with being powerful enough to protect others. He still loves dramatic entrances, great battles, old stories, and boasting about past victories, but the enthusiasm hides considerable experience and regret. Reinhardt values directness and dislikes cynicism, believing that courage and decency remain worthwhile even when the world considers those ideals old-fashioned.

Balderich von Adler was Reinhardt’s commander, friend, and the man whose sacrifice transformed his understanding of duty; Reinhardt continues to honor him decades after Eichenwalde. Torbjörn Lindholm is one of his oldest surviving comrades from Overwatch, their friendship enduring long after the organization’s collapse. Torbjörn’s daughter Brigitte is Reinhardt’s goddaughter and later becomes his squire, traveling beside him and frequently restraining his tendency to throw himself recklessly into danger. Ana Amari and the other veterans of the original Overwatch share decades of battlefield history with him, while Winston earns Reinhardt’s immediate support when he calls the organization back together. Reinhardt views the younger agents joining the restored Overwatch with enthusiasm, eager to fight beside them while passing on the lessons he learned far more painfully.

Reinhardt wears massive Crusader armor, a powered combat suit built to withstand heavy weapons while amplifying his already formidable physical strength. Its integrated Barrier Field projects a broad energy shield in front of him, allowing Reinhardt to advance under concentrated fire while protecting allies behind him. The armor’s propulsion systems also enable his devastating Charge, launching his enormous frame forward with enough force to carry an opponent into a wall.

His primary weapon is the enormous Rocket Hammer, whose powered head delivers crushing blows capable of smashing through armor and machinery. Reinhardt can swing the weapon hard enough to release a burning Fire Strike across a distance, and by driving the hammer into the ground he can unleash Earthshatter, sending a violent shock through the terrain that knocks nearby enemies from their feet. Decades of service have also made him an experienced battlefield commander and close-quarters fighter who understands how to use his armor as protection for an entire formation rather than merely as a weapon for himself.
