Rex Tyler was born and raised in upstate New York, where he developed a strong passion for science, particularly chemistry and biology. As a young boy in 1919, he was mysteriously visited by an older version of himself, who entrusted him with an hourglass and instructed him to keep it safe until it was needed in his final hour. After working his way through college, Rex joined Bannerman Chemical as a researcher focused on vitamins and hormone supplements. Through a mix of experimentation and accidents, he created a powerful substance he called Miraclo — a “miraculous vitamin” that granted living beings strength, speed, and vitality far beyond normal levels. Testing it on himself, Rex discovered that while Miraclo gave him superhuman abilities, its effects only lasted for one hour before his body returned to normal.

Believing he could use his discovery for good, Rex secretly adopted the identity of the Hour-Man. He placed an ad offering help to anyone in need, calling himself “The Man of the Hour,” and soon began fighting crime and aiding ordinary people. His first mission was helping a woman whose husband had become involved with criminals, during which he foiled a robbery. Adopting a costume he found in an abandoned shop, Hourman dedicated himself to protecting the innocent, relying on Miraclo to fight crime for one hour at a time. His reputation grew quickly, and he became known for helping the common man and battling unusual threats.

Hourman’s growing fame led to his invitation to join the Justice Society of America as a founding member. Surrounded by heroes who could wield magic, fly, or channel cosmic forces, Rex continued refining Miraclo to enhance its effects. However, over time, the drug began showing darker side effects — it became addictive, and Rex found himself anxious and overly talkative while under its influence. The toll on his body escalated until his heart failed, poisoned by Miraclo’s toxicity. Doctor Fate intervened, using mystical powers to cleanse Rex’s system and save his life. Afterward, Hourman retired from active duty and took a leave of absence from the JSA to recover.

During his final case before stepping back from heroics, Rex was exposed to chronal energy that drastically slowed his aging, allowing him to remain active and vital long after his peers had aged.

Appearance: Hourman is a physically fit adult male with a muscular build, wearing a black full-body suit accented by a bold red utility belt at his waist. He dons a yellow hooded cape that drapes over his shoulders and extends behind him, along with a black domino-style mask that conceals his identity. His costume includes a red hourglass emblem on his chest.

Personality: Hourman’s personality is defined by determination, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. As a scientist-turned-hero, Rex Tyler is analytical and methodical, often approaching problems with a logical, solutions-oriented mindset. He is compassionate and grounded, motivated by a genuine desire to help ordinary people rather than seek glory or recognition. Despite his brilliance, he remains humble and approachable, often portraying himself as “the man of the hour” — a hero who steps in when needed most.

Rex’s reliance on Miraclo and his past struggles with addiction add layers of vulnerability and self-awareness to his character. He is introspective and cautious about the consequences of his choices, which makes him both thoughtful and empathetic toward others facing personal battles. His scientific curiosity drives him, but his moral compass keeps him focused on using his knowledge and power for good.

Rex Tyler’s powers originate from his unique physiology and his creation, Miraclo. Occasionally, Rex could reactivate the residual traces of Miraclo in his system without taking a new dose, either by exposing himself to black light or by reciting the mantra “Man of the Hour.” The effects of Miraclo also granted him an enhanced immune system that persisted even after the drug’s primary effects had worn off.

Beyond his powers, Rex was skilled in several fields, including aviation, chemistry, and biology, reflecting his scientific background and expertise. However, his abilities came with a significant limitation: Miraclo’s effects lasted only 60 minutes before burning out. Afterward, his body required approximately 24 hours to purge the toxins produced during that period. Additionally, his reliance on Miraclo led to a struggle with drug addiction, a challenge he eventually overcame.

Hourman’s superhuman abilities were entirely derived from Miraclo, a “miracle vitamin” whose active ingredient — a special form of phosphorus — bonded temporarily with the ATP in muscle cells to create adenosine quad-phosphate (AQP), dramatically energizing the body. This process granted him superhuman strength, enhanced durability, heightened stamina, increased agility, and even the ability to breathe underwater. During his early adventures, he also utilized a tear gas-emitting ring to incapacitate his enemies, supplementing his powers with practical tools in combat.
