The symbiote dragon that later became known as the Grendel was created billions of years ago by Knull, alongside a crimson symbiote dragon manifested from Knull's blood. In 1965, the Grendel's frozen body was discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D., who excavated it and extracted samples of its living abyss to study. (More Marvel Characters in Profile)

Grendel is the primordial nightmare of the symbiote race, a massive engine of destruction forged from the living abyss by Knull himself. It was sent to Earth during the ninth century, where its arrival sparked the legend of the hero Beowulf after it terrorized the northern lands. Unlike the smaller, humanoid symbiotes that require hosts to function efficiently, Grendel is a hive-mind entity of immense scale that operates as a direct extension of the God of Symbiotes. It spent centuries frozen within the permafrost after a defeat in ancient times, only to be unearthed in the modern era as a catalyst for Knull's awakening and the subsequent invasion of Earth.
Appearance: Grendel has black skin. His eyes are glowing white and slanted. A network of thin, light grey vein-like lines covers the entire surface of his muscular torso and limbs. Defined pectoral and abdominal muscles are visible on his chest and stomach. Large, leathery wings with visible ridges extend from his back. His long, muscular arms end in massive hands featuring four sharp, curved black claws. A thick, elongated tail grows from the base of his spine and tapers into a thin, curled tip. His muscular legs lead to large feet with sharp black claws.
Personality: As an avatar of the King in Black, Grendel does not possess a distinct personality in the human sense but rather reflects the cold, singular hunger of its creator. It is a creature of absolute obedience and cosmic malice, driven by the desire to consume or corrupt every living light in the universe. Its presence is often accompanied by a telepathic scream that resonates through the hive-mind, forcing lesser symbiotes into a state of subservient frenzy (it is unable to speak). Its relations are limited to its role as a herald; it views other symbiotes as disposable biomass and sees the inhabitants of Earth as nothing more than fuel for the coming darkness. It remains the ultimate tool of Knull, a mindless dragon that lives only to pave the way for its master's return.
Grendel possesses an advanced symbiote physiology because it was directly forged by Knull, making it vastly more powerful than standard alien parasites. This draconic entity is capable of interstellar flight at hypersonic speeds, allowing it to traverse the cosmos and annihilate entire civilizations. Its physical attributes are pushed to deific levels, featuring superhuman strength, stamina, and reflexes that allow it to dominate almost any battlefield. Beyond its raw power, Grendel is effectively immortal, having survived for billions of years while maintaining its status as an apex predator of the living abyss.
The creature can manipulate its own constituent matter to manifest lethal tendrils, fanged jaws, and talons for close quarters combat. It is also capable of offshoot generation, allowing it to separate its biomass into individual symbiotes that can bond with hosts or even reanimate corpses to serve the hive mind. This biological versatility makes Grendel a mobile factory of infection. While it possesses an accelerated healing factor that repairs most damage, it can also reform its entire shape to adapt to different tactical needs during a hunt.
Despite its immense power, Grendel still retains the traditional vulnerabilities of its species, though it is far more resilient than its lesser cousins. High voltages of electricity are particularly effective at destabilizing its form, as seen when it was incapacitated by divine lightning or bio-electric blasts. It can withstand incendiary missiles and traditional flamethrowers, but extreme heat from sources like a blast furnace or a star can still destroy it. While sonic weapons can temporarily stun the dragon, it usually requires a massive amount of sensory overload to force the creature to unspool into an amorphous mass.

The defensive line at the edge of the financial district was a mess of sandbags and idling armored vehicles. Soldiers stared upward, their rifles held with white-knuckled grips as the black dragon banked hard around the spire of a central tower. A sergeant keyed his radio, his voice cracking under the pressure of the subsonic hum vibrating through his marrow. "Command, we have visual. It's bigger than the reports. We're engaging now." He didn't wait for a response before giving the order to fire. Anti-aircraft rounds chewed into the black, muscular hide of the beast, but the light grey vein-like lines across its torso simply pulsed with a dull light. Grendel ignored the metal rain, its long tail lashing out to swat a low-flying news helicopter out of the air before it dived straight toward the infantry line.
