Hal Jordan grew up around aircraft and idolized his father Martin Jordan. Martin was a test pilot who was killed when his aircraft crashed in front of Hal. Rather than driving him away from flying the loss strengthened Hal’s determination to follow the same path. He joined the United States Air Force and became an exceptional pilot whose confidence and disregard for caution frequently brought him into conflict with authority. He later became a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft under Carol Ferris. Hal’s life changed when the mortally wounded Green Lantern Abin Sur crashed on Earth and ordered his power ring to find someone capable of overcoming great fear. The ring chose Hal and brought him to Abin. Hal inherited the ring and responsibility for Sector 2814 before being inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. He trained on Oa and learned under Sinestro who was then regarded as one of the Corps’ greatest officers.

Hal eventually discovered that Sinestro maintained order on Korugar through fear and authoritarian control. The Guardians stripped Sinestro of his ring and expelled him from the Corps. Sinestro later obtained a yellow ring powered by fear and became Hal’s greatest enemy. Hal continued serving Sector 2814 and became one of the Corps’ most accomplished members while also helping protect Earth alongside the Justice League. His responsibilities repeatedly pulled him between Earth and distant regions of space. Other humans including Guy Gardner and John Stewart eventually joined the Corps and shared responsibility for their sector. Hal’s life collapsed when Coast City was annihilated. Overwhelmed by grief he turned against the Corps and seized the power of the Central Power Battery as Parallax. It was eventually discovered that the ancient fear entity Parallax had infected and manipulated him. After sacrificing himself to save Earth from the Sun-Eater and later serving as the Spectre Hal was separated from Parallax and restored to life as Green Lantern.

Hal returned to active service and rebuilt his standing among Lanterns who still remembered what had happened on Oa. His renewed conflict with Sinestro expanded into a war between the Green Lantern Corps and Sinestro’s fear-powered army. Hal later became one of the central figures in the struggle against the Black Lanterns when Nekron attempted to extinguish life across the universe. He continued serving through repeated upheavals within the Corps and increasingly challenged the Guardians whenever their decisions conflicted with his own judgment. Hal has lost his ring and authority more than once without abandoning the responsibility that came with becoming a Green Lantern. Whether operating from Earth or across deep space he remains one of the most accomplished bearers of the green light of will.

Appearance: Green Lantern has fair peach skin and a tall heavily muscular athletic build. His eyes are brown. His short dark brown hair is thick and swept back from his forehead. A metallic green domino mask covers the area around his eyes and extends across the bridge of his nose.

He wears a close-fitting green and black bodysuit with a fine textured surface. Bright emerald green covers his chest shoulders upper back and abdomen while black panels cover the sides of his torso arms hips and legs. A large glowing Green Lantern emblem sits at the center of his chest with a white circular core surrounded by a luminous green ring.

White gauntlets cover his hands and extend nearly to his elbows. Matching green boots cover his feet and lower legs.

Personality: Hal is fearless in the sense that he refuses to allow fear to dictate his actions rather than being incapable of experiencing it. He is confident and stubborn with a strong instinct to act before asking permission. Years as a pilot left him comfortable taking risks that others consider unnecessary and his relationship with authority has always been difficult. He can be arrogant when he trusts his own judgment more than regulations or orders. That independence has caused serious mistakes but it also makes him willing to oppose the Guardians when he believes they have lost sight of what the Corps is meant to protect. Beneath his confidence Hal carries considerable guilt over the people he has failed and the destruction caused while Parallax controlled him.

Carol Ferris is Hal’s oldest and most important romantic relationship. His responsibilities as Green Lantern have repeatedly strained their attempts to build a stable life together and Carol’s own connection to the Star Sapphires has placed them on opposite sides of several conflicts. Sinestro began as Hal’s mentor before becoming his greatest rival. Their hostility is complicated by the respect each retains for the other’s will and ability. Barry Allen is one of Hal’s closest friends and shares his tendency to balance an ordinary identity with extraordinary responsibilities. John Stewart and Guy Gardner are fellow Lanterns whom Hal considers trusted comrades despite frequent disagreements over methods and temperament. Kilowog is another longstanding friend whose loyalty to Hal has survived some of the darkest periods in the Corps’ history.

Hal possesses no inherent superhuman powers without his ring but is an exceptional pilot with military training and extensive experience in aerial and spacecraft combat. His extraordinary willpower allows him to use a Green Lantern power ring at levels few wielders can match. The ring converts will into solid green energy that Hal can shape into nearly any construct he can clearly imagine. He commonly creates weapons and restraints and shields as well as vehicles and enormous mechanical structures. It also allows him to fly through atmospheres and space while protecting him with a force field. The ring can project energy blasts and scan environments and translate alien languages while providing life support in hostile conditions. The strength and complexity of its creations depend heavily upon Hal’s concentration and will.

Hal’s primary equipment is his Green Lantern power ring and the personal power battery used to recharge it. The battery draws upon the greater green energy of will associated with the Central Power Battery and the emotional spectrum. His uniform can be generated by the ring and provides protection suitable for combat in space or hostile planetary environments. Hal’s experience with the ring is as important as its raw capabilities. He can rapidly change constructs during combat and combine physical movement with energy attacks while using his instincts as a pilot to maneuver through three-dimensional battles at extreme speed.
