Maya Lopez was born deaf but remained undiagnosed for years due to her exceptional lip-reading. Her father, Willie "Crazy Horse" Lincoln, a Cheyenne mob enforcer for the Kingpin, was murdered by Fisk when he outlived his usefulness. With his dying words, he asked Fisk to care for Maya, leaving a bloody handprint on her face as he died.

Raised by Fisk, Maya was first placed in a special needs school until she impressed by replicating a piano recital, leading to enrollment in a gifted school. She excelled in art and dance. Fisk later manipulated her into targeting Daredevil, convincing her that Matt Murdock was her father’s killer. Seeking revenge, she studied recordings of Daredevil and Bullseye, fought Matt, and nearly killed him before realizing the truth. She turned on Fisk, shooting and blinding him.

Seeking direction, Maya traveled abroad before returning for a vision quest on her father’s reservation. Guided by a medicine man, she sought meaning through fasting, visions, and storytelling, later channeling her experiences into performance art using dance, music, and sign language. She reconciled with Matt before leaving him for good.

Recruited by Daredevil, Maya joined the New Avengers as Ronin. Infiltrating the Hand and Hydra in Japan, she fought alongside the team but was eventually killed in battle with Elektra, then secretly resurrected and brainwashed by the Hand. Rescued by the Avengers, she turned on them under the Hand’s influence until freed by Doctor Strange and Iron Fist. Elektra was revealed as a Skrull, forcing the Hand to retreat. Maya continued with the Avengers, lending aid during World War Hulk, the Hood’s rise, and a symbiote invasion.

During Secret Invasion, she uncovered Skrull infiltration after surviving an attack from a disguised Skrull Daredevil. Comforted by Clint Barton, she began a relationship with him and fought in the Savage Land and New York against the Skrull Queen’s forces.

Later, she went undercover in Los Angeles, working with Moon Knight against Count Nefaria until she was seemingly killed by his optic blast. Years later, she resurfaced alive, helping Daredevil defeat Klaw’s attempt to take over New York with sound constructs.

When the Phoenix Force returned to Earth, Maya was chosen as its host after dying in battle against Namor. Reborn as the Phoenix, she absorbed fragments from other contestants, fully embodying the cosmic entity, and relocated to Avengers Mountain for study. She later helped restore reality during Heroes Reborn, recruiting Thor and fighting the Squadron Supreme.

As a full Avenger, Echo wielded the Phoenix against the Multiversal Masters of Evil, traveling through time to fight alongside the prehistoric Avengers. At the God Quarry, she expended the Phoenix power defending the Multiverse. With the cosmic force gone, she left the Avengers, closing her chapter as Phoenix.

Appearance: Echo is a lean, athletic woman with tan skin. She has a white handprint marking on her face. Her black hair is tied up in a messy bun with a few loose strands and feathers as pins. She wears a sleeveless black crop top that exposes her midriff, with her arms and hands tightly wrapped in white bandages. Her pants are dark, fitted, and secured with a brown studded belt.

Echo possesses photographic reflexes, the same ability as Taskmaster, which allows her to perfectly replicate any physical movement or combat technique after seeing it once. This enables her to mimic martial arts, acrobatics, weapons skills, and even performance arts, though it cannot replicate superhuman powers. Through observation, she became an extraordinary concert-level pianist and a graceful dancer. She mastered various martial arts by studying fighters like Daredevil and Bullseye, as well as films featuring martial artists such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. By mimicking Daredevil, she became a skilled acrobat capable of advanced gymnastic feats, and by studying Bullseye, she achieved expert marksmanship, able to throw objects with deadly precision. Her weapons training includes billy clubs used in an Eskrima style, swords including single and double katana, nunchaku, and other melee and ranged arms.

Despite her skills, Echo retains the natural limitations of a human and cannot mimic feats requiring superhuman strength, speed, or endurance. She is susceptible to fatigue, injury, and conventional weaponry. Her deafness presents additional challenges in combat, as she cannot rely on sound cues and is more vulnerable to sneak attacks or auditory distractions, though her visual awareness and adaptability compensate for this disadvantage. She often equips herself with billy clubs similar to Daredevil’s, as well as handguns, poisoned darts, and shuriken, adapting her arsenal depending on the situation.
