Dr. Alexander Sartorius was a nuclear scientist and member of Gotham City’s exclusive Tobacconists’ Club who invested in the construction of a nuclear power plant with the support of corrupt politician Rupert Thorne. Public opposition forced the facility offshore, where a catastrophic reactor meltdown struck while Sartorius was present. He attempted to shield himself behind sandbags, but the explosion irradiated the sand and transformed its silicon into phosphorus, embedding radioactive material throughout his body. Sartorius survived as a burning, radioactive metahuman and took the name Doctor Phosphorus, blaming Gotham and Thorne for what had happened to him. He began contaminating Gotham’s water supply with radiation until Batman discovered the source and stopped him.
Phosphorus survived his early defeats and continued returning as one of Gotham’s most hazardous criminals, his radioactive body making ordinary imprisonment and physical restraint extremely difficult. During a bargain with the demon Neron, his powers were greatly enhanced and his control over his burning body improved. He later operated beyond Gotham as well, including a campaign against Ted Knight, the original Starman, during which his radiation caused devastating long-term harm. Phosphorus eventually returned to Gotham and escaped Arkham during a period of chaos in the city, later targeting Kirk Langstrom and his family in an attempt to exploit the scientist behind Man-Bat.
Appearance: Doctor Phosphorus is a humanoid figure whose entire body glows with an intense, fiery golden radiance. His skin is translucent and constantly aflame with a molten phosphorus burn, allowing the skeletal structure beneath to be clearly visible through the blazing light. His skull is fully exposed beneath the incandescent outer layer, its hollow eye sockets emitting a harsh, white-hot glow. The mouth is set in a grim, fixed expression, with jagged teeth outlined sharply against the internal illumination. His hands are elongated and skeletal, with sharpened, claw-like fingers formed from the same blazing phosphorus material. The body maintains a lean but defined muscular frame, with every movement trailing faint arcs of searing light. His lower half is clad in black, tattered pants, cinched at the waist with a small metal belt buckle, while his bare, phosphorus-formed feet burn directly into the ground, scorching and cracking the surface beneath him.
Personality: Sartorius is vindictive, intelligent, bitter, and consumed by the belief that other people are responsible for the destruction of his former life. His transformation leaves him physically isolated from ordinary humanity, and he responds by turning that suffering outward, showing little concern for civilians exposed to his radiation. He possesses the patience and scientific knowledge to plan deliberate attacks rather than relying solely on his powers, but revenge frequently overwhelms his judgment. Phosphorus is fully aware of how horrifying prolonged radiation exposure can be and readily uses that knowledge to intimidate victims.
Batman is Doctor Phosphorus’s principal enemy and the hero who first stopped his campaign against Gotham. Rupert Thorne is closely tied to Sartorius’s transformation, having helped arrange the nuclear project whose disastrous construction ultimately created Phosphorus, making him one of Sartorius’s earliest targets for revenge. Neron later becomes responsible for greatly enhancing Phosphorus’s abilities through a supernatural bargain. Ted Knight becomes another deeply personal enemy after their repeated clashes, while Kirk Langstrom, Man-Bat, and Francine Langstrom are drawn into his later criminal activity when Phosphorus attempts to use the Langstrom family for his own purposes.
Doctor Phosphorus constantly generates dangerous radiation from his altered body and can manipulate that energy offensively. His touch can inflict severe radioactive burns, while prolonged exposure to his presence can cause radiation poisoning. He can project bursts of radioactive energy, surround himself with burning radiation, release toxic emissions, and manipulate his body temperature to produce extreme heat. His transformed physiology possesses tremendous endurance and no longer depends upon ordinary human biological processes in the same manner as an unaltered body.
His body itself functions as his primary weapon, leaving him with little need for conventional equipment. The radioactive energy surrounding him can make close physical contact extremely dangerous and can damage incoming attacks before they reach him. Sartorius also retains his considerable scientific expertise, particularly in nuclear science and radiation, allowing him to understand and exploit the same forces that permanently transformed him.

In the hollow glow of Gotham's underbelly, Dr. Phosphorus stood before a cracked mirror, his flesh a patchwork of burns and glowing embers. He had once been a man of science, driven by ambition and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Now, he was something else—something more, yet less than human. A walking disaster, a living weapon powered by radioactive decay.
"Looking good. Let's see what's on the agenda for business in Gotham. Maybe I'll go kill some Warhogs."
"Sacrifices must be made. I didn't come to rule Charneltown by being nice."
"I wonder if I should kill you now... or just give you cancer."
