As a child, Duc No Tranh’s life was shattered when his village and family were massacred during the Siancong War. The attack, committed by a rogue unit of U.S. soldiers, was a war crime that left Tranh orphaned and consumed by grief and rage. Driven by vengeance, he dedicated his life to training his body and mind, becoming a master martial artist, weapons expert, and tracker of unparalleled skill.

Tranh first sought revenge on those responsible, beginning a relentless pursuit of the soldiers who razed his village. His early attempts at retribution were thwarted by Daredevil, who tried to divert him from a path of bloodshed. Years later, Tranh confronted Red Wolf, one of the men involved in the massacre. His mission eventually brought him to New York, where he targeted Michael Janes—the commanding officer of the unit—who had since become a priest. In the midst of this final confrontation, he crossed paths with the New Warriors and the Punisher. Frank Castle, himself a brutal symbol of justice and vengeance, challenged Tranh’s motives. Confronted with the futility of his rage, Tranh chose to spare Janes, bringing his long pursuit of vengeance to an end.

Despite stepping away from personal revenge, Tranh later hunted Li Pan, a North Vietnamese war criminal who had resurfaced under a new identity as Gai No Don, a wealthy benefactor of the Taylor Foundation. His attempt to bring Li Pan to justice was interrupted by Night Thrasher.

At some point in his life, Tranh found stability. He married an American woman and started a family, raising a son named Minh. His desire to protect his family and seek redemption led him to join the Initiative’s black-ops team, the Shadow Initiative. He was recruited by Henry Peter Gyrich, who recognized his formidable talents. Initially resentful, especially toward James Rhodes for his military ties to the Siancong War, Tranh eventually agreed to serve—choosing duty over pride.

Tranh operated under the Initiative during several critical missions, including the rescue of imprisoned recruits during the Hulk’s assault on Manhattan and a deployment to Madripoor to retrieve a rogue agent. However, when Norman Osborn restructured the team into expendable shock troops, Bengal remained reluctantly, prioritizing the mission and his family’s security. After Osborn’s fall, Tranh retired from active duty and settled in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. There, he opened a martial arts school, seeking peace and purpose by passing on what he had learned.

Bengal possesses peak human conditioning, with strength, speed, agility, and endurance honed to their limits through rigorous training. He is a world-class martial artist and a highly skilled acrobat. His combat style incorporates paired, collapsible sai-like weapons, though he is also proficient with bows, shurikens, and various melee and ranged tools.

He has an acute sense of smell, allowing him to track individuals by scent over great distances. Combined with his battlefield experience and assassin-level training, this makes him a formidable tracker and hunter.

Appearance: Bengal's costume is a sleek, form-fitting tiger-striped bodysuit in gold and black. The mask fully covers his head, with narrow white eye lenses that give him a sharp, focused expression. His gloves and boots are black, integrated seamlessly into the suit.
