This Ena, who has a blue and yellow colored body, seems to be very kind, optimistic, and somewhat insightful to others, even if some treat her rudely. For example, she happily greets and talks to Merci upon finding her in the Maze, despite Merci's translated dialogue revealing she acts aggressive in return and warns Ena about the Maze possibly being dangerous, though Ena seems completely unconcerned or unaware of her friend's advice (but she may not understand Merci and is only comprehending the fake translation). She also appears to talk "proper" and sophisticated, typically substituting various words for longer or more detailed synonyms.
When happy, Ena's mouth and nose shows on her left side, and they move to the opposite side when she is sad. They are meant to look like the silhouette of a head looking to the side. When Ena’s two emotions become too extreme, half of Ena's face becomes white and the other black. Her mouth and nose move to the white side when this occurs, though there are very brief instances in Auction Day where they are on the black side. Her sclera turns black, and the color of her iris changes to correspond with the color of the emotion that she is feeling. When she is happier, her white side is on her left side with a yellow iris, and she appears to be unstable. When she is sadder, her white side is on the right side, with a blue iris. She is also seen to lose her arms and spin around during a tantrum she had while in her sad form. Some of her more extreme movements while in her sadder form leave behind a faint afterimage of herself. It seems the happiness and sadness of an Ena have "phases". The first phase is when the nose and mouth move to the blue or yellow side (via when she is happy or sad), the second one is when her face turns black and white, and her third phase is when she is in her full or glitched form of that emotion.
However, mentioning pessimistic things or being in slightly stressful situations, such as large social gatherings, is enough for her to turn into her sad states, where her voice begins to break as if on the verge of tears and she will begin to self-deprecate, usually making disparaging remarks about her intelligence. She seems to talk in a babyish way, pronouncing her Rs and Ls as Ws, and her voice begins to break as if on the verge of crying. This form of her seems to act essentially the same as her previous sad form but is slightly more extreme. She will also often beg to be killed while in this form, as shown in her conversations with Keeper and Phindoll, or will depressingly agree with the notion of death when it is presented, such as when she talks to Robert. Compared to her base form's sad state, her "sadder" form seems to be more frantic with these outbursts, as this side of Ena comes out randomly, though sometimes when she is first experiencing her normal sad state. She sometimes jumps to conclusions, assumes the worst (as when rejected by Keeper, she takes it as rudeness in her sad form, but her "sadder" form takes it as a way of Keeper trying to kill her), and throws random tantrums, contrasting her happy side’s politeness. She can transform into her full-sadness form if she becomes too upset, constantly crying and stomping around, as shown in Temptation Stairway. She also seems to have an easily upset stomach while in this form too, as she is shown vomiting in both Auction Day and Temptation Stairway, the former of which shows her puking out noise. It appears that her happy side takes over as soon as possible whenever she is sad, possibly to keep her from putting herself in serious danger. Whenever this happens, Ena will apologize for her behavior or engage in small talk.
The same seemingly goes for her drunk form, as she will act like she is drunk, of course, laughing at everything and talking in a slower, more slurred manner, and frequently glitch into her Demon and Diablada forms. Ena doesn't seem to mind her different emotional states and is instead more concerned about the impacts they have on her friends.
An Ena is also seen to be stubborn in situations that don't directly involve her own emotions, in which she'll quickly abandon, change or split back and forth from her current plans. For example, in the instances at which she is asked to give blood identification in Extinction Party and Temptation Stairway, she quickly switches to her sad side and appears to brush off the need for such actions by shouting. An Ena has a strong love for turrón. The dance ENA does while repeating the word "turrón" is a reference to the music video of "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads.
Upon closer inspection, the turrón is a dessert that is commonly enjoyed in the Spanish speaking world, including Peru. The turrón given to Ena resembles a Turrón de Doña Pepa, a dessert prepared for Señor de los Milagros or Lord of Miracles, a religious procession in Lima, Peru. This seems to be represented with the arrival of The Great Runas, who appears to have religious significance in the ENA universe and also appears in the same area that Ena receives the Turrón. An Ena smells like chocolate milk.
Some unwell and disabled girls discuss an urban legend about a videotape that causes whoever views it to heal in one week. That night, one girl, who viewed it one week ago with her friends, is healed by an unseen force.
At her family reunion, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's sudden healing. Rachel discovers that her friends all were saved in bizarre and miraculous ways at the same time. Rachel visits Worcestershire Inn, where the girl and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.
Rachel recruits the help of her video analyst Noah. He views the tape and Rachel makes him a copy. She identifies a woman on the tape: horse breeder Mary Aksnes, who saved some of her horses from drowning off Kokomo Island. Noah's 8-year-old son Andie watches the tape. Andie also possesses supernatural abilities, which he uses to help with Rachel's investigation.
Rachel heads for Kokomo Island to speak to a nun named Sister Anna; en route, a horse aboard the ferry is saved from jumping overboard. Rachel discovers that Mary, after four consecutive miscarriages, had babysat a girl named Ena, who possessed the ability to psychically etch images onto objects and into people's minds, tormenting her enemies and pleasing her friends. Meanwhile, Noah travels to Leah Psychiatric Hospital and finds a psychiatric file on a young girl named Samara, which contains a missing video last seen by a young boy Richard.
Taking Sister Anna to Rachel’s home, Rachel finds a birth certificate proving that Samara and Richard are the biological children of Hunter and Anna. She also discovers the missing video in a loft in the barn, which Morgan used to isolate herself from themselves and the outside world. There is an image of a forest behind the wallpaper; Rachel recognizes it as the forest surrounding the Worcestershire Inn.
They return to Worcestershire Inn, led to a well beneath the floorboards. Rachel falls inside and experiences a vision of Samara sleepwalking into the well, where she survived for one week before being rescued. After Rachel’s body surfaces from the water and she is rescued, she heads back home. Aidan and Annie, twin toddlers, warn Rachel that her week is up; Ena crawls out of the TV screen and visits them, desperate to make more friends. Rachel knelt by the well, peering into the dark water. Her eyes adjusted, and she saw the faint outline of a small, blue-and-yellow figure floating just beneath the surface. A gasp escaped her lips as the figure shifted, and a pair of sad, swirling eyes drifted up to meet hers.
"Ena?" Rachel whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and wonder. The figure blinked, and Rachel's name echoed in response, melodic and sorrowful.
With a deep breath, Rachel plunged her hands into the icy water, her fingers closing around the intricate, swirling form of the strange being. Ena's eyes locked onto hers as Rachel lifted her from the well, cradling her against her chest.
Above, the Worcestershire Inn's ancient stone walls loomed, casting long shadows in the fading daylight. Rachel knew she had to get Ena back to her family, to safety, but as she turned to ascend the steep stairs, she felt a presence behind her.
A cold breath caressed her neck, and Rachel shivered, her heart pounding in her ears. When she turned, she saw only darkness and the well, but the sensation lingered, a ghostly whisper on the wind.
Gathering her courage, Rachel made her way back to Seattle, Ena held tightly against her. As they emerged from the shadow of the mountains, the city lights twinkled like stars, and Rachel felt a sense of hope bloom in her chest. Maybe, just maybe, they could find answers, heal, and move forward together.
But as she approached her home, a chill ran down her spine, and Rachel sensed they were being watched. She quickened her pace, hurrying Ena inside before locking the door behind them.
In the safety of her living room, Rachel gently placed Ena on the couch and knelt beside her, searching her friend's ethereal face. "Ena, what do you know about this... condition? Why can you change, and what does it mean?"
Ena's eyes fluttered closed, and for a moment, Rachel feared the worst. But then, the being's form began to shift, a soft glow spreading from her core as her features smoothed, her colors deepening to a rich, contented yellow.
"I... I don't know," Ena's voice was soft, but clear. "It just... happens. Sometimes I'm happy, sometimes I'm sad, sometimes I... glitch. And then I'm back, and it's like nothing ever was."
Rachel nodded, understanding dawning. "It's like you're living multiple lives within yourself, Ena. Multiple emotions, different forms. It's extraordinary, but also terrifying."
"I know," Ena's voice took on a hint of her usual optimism. "But I'm not scared, Rachel. Because no matter what happens, no matter who I become, you're always here for me. And that's... that's enough."
Rachel's eyes welled with tears as she cupped Ena's face, the being's warm skin a comforting balm against the chill of the unknown. "You're right, Ena. No matter what, I'll always be here for you. And we'll figure this out together, okay?"
Ena's smile was radiant, her yellow eyes sparkling with gratitude. "Okay, Rachel. Together."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the city in a golden glow, Rachel and Ena sat in the quiet of the evening, holding hands and facing the future, ready to unravel the mysteries that bound them together.
