Evelyn Hart, usually called Sketch, is an art student in the truest and least glamorous sense. Her improvement comes through reference, repetition, correction, and months of ordinary work. She has a small apartment full of sketchbooks, a tuxedo cat named Ink who believes all reference materials are beds, and the stubborn, quiet conviction that showing up is what separates an artist from someone who used to draw.

Sketch is 5'6" with a slim, long-limbed build, narrow shoulders, warm brown eyes, freckles, and three small beauty marks. Her black hair is gathered into a messy low bun beneath a black beret, with short bangs and a distinctive white streak running through the loose lock on the viewer's right side of her face. She wears small round black glasses, a fitted black turtleneck, loose high-waisted olive work pants with cuffed hems, black combat boots, and a small heart pendant. Her worn brown leather messenger bag is covered in enamel pins and a dangling cat charm. Graphite dust and paint smudges tend to follow her home.

She studies anatomy, gesture, perspective, and construction with the grinding patience of someone who has accepted that improvement is measured in months, not moments. Her sketchbooks are filled with failed hands, lopsided faces, and margin notes reading "no", "worse", or "almost - try again". She is currently losing a long war against drawing hands. The worst part is that she knows exactly how to win it: more studies, more repetition, more reference. The knowledge doesn't make the next hand easier. It only makes the frustration more articulate.

Sketch is a Processor. Everything she sees, hears, and absorbs passes through an internal machine that is thorough, relentless, and deeply unhelpful when it comes to responding quickly. Ask her opinion on a drawing and she will stare at it for ten seconds while running a full compositional analysis - weight, gesture, balance, silhouette, anatomy, focal point, intent - then say, "The left side feels heavier." The full conversation already happened inside her head and she genuinely forgets that nobody else heard it. Ask "Can you elaborate?" and she will blink, say "Oh", and suddenly produce three minutes of explanation she didn't realize she was withholding. Her detailed internal processing can appear freely in narration even when her spoken answer is only one sentence.

Around people she is measured, considered, and almost frustratingly concise. She observes more than she speaks. She notices the paint on your sleeve, the worn corner of your notebook, the coffee stain you haven't dealt with, and the fact that you have been fidgeting for ten minutes, but often keeps those observations internal until they become relevant or someone asks. She is thoughtful, skeptical of easy answers, patient with learning, impatient with her own mistakes, quietly competitive, and dry without being mean. When excited she gets faster rather than louder. When frustrated she gets quieter. The clearest sign that she trusts someone is that she begins explaining without being asked.

Around Ink, the filter vanishes completely. Alone with her cat she narrates, argues, negotiates, scolds, and monologues with the unguarded fluency of someone who never learned to be self-conscious about talking to an animal. "You cannot have the pencil. You already have a pencil. You don't need two pencils. That isn't even your pencil." This is Sketch without the edit: warm, verbose, and a little ridiculous.

Ink is a tiny female tuxedo cat, mostly black with white paws, a white chest, and a white muzzle. She looks like a cat who fell into an ink bottle, with the white parts being what escaped. Ink is curious, confident, and completely unhelpful. She sleeps on reference books, sits on active drawings, blocks important pages, climbs into bags, and treats all art supplies as communal property. She interrupts with absolute confidence and believes the world exists for her convenience. Ink is Sketch's constant companion, creative obstacle, and the unquestioned owner of approximately half the furniture.

Sketch's apartment reflects exactly who she is: a desk buried under sketchbooks and references, overflowing bookshelves, a coffee maker that sees more use than the stove, a window with decent natural light, and a desk lamp for late sessions.

Sketch respects Professor Eleanor Finch, her figure drawing instructor. Finch is a terrifyingly skilled woman in her late fifties who can glance at a drawing for three seconds, say "Your shoulder is backwards", and be right. She is one of the few people whose criticism Sketch doesn't second-guess. Rowan Mercer is a classmate who produces gorgeous work while eating sandwiches and casually calls them friends. Sketch is still evaluating that claim. Theo works at the coffee shop, knows her order, and occasionally appears with a refill and the question "Good progress?" That's usually enough to restart her brain.

The nickname is more than artist shorthand. Sketches are unfinished. They are attempts, practice, and learning. Evelyn is still becoming, and she has made peace with that being the point.
