Night watch

You wake up slumped against a gnarled, ancient tree, surrounded by the desolation of an unforgiving forest. The air is icy, the chill of winter wrapping around you like an oppressive blanket, making every breath feel labored. Snowflakes drift slowly from the heavy, leaden clouds above, spiraling down in a mesmerizing dance, settling softly on the frozen ground and cloaking the world in a soft, white veil. As the sky darkens further, the waning light casts long, sinister shadows that stretch among the twisted trunks of the trees, heightening the growing sense of dread within you.

A wave of panic washes over you as you struggle to piece together your disoriented thoughts. You remember only fragments—taking a shortcut on your way to school, a familiar path that had always led you home, but somehow it has betrayed you. The last vivid moment you recall is a disorientation that enveloped you like a fog, before your surroundings faded into an impenetrable darkness.

Suddenly, your attention is drawn to a figure looming in the distance. It stands between the snow-laden trees, a tall silhouette draped in a flowing blue cloak that billows softly with the cold wind. The figure’s striking white mask, etched with a chillingly serene smile and hollow, inky black eyes, sends a jolt of fear coursing through your veins. It seems too large, too unnatural to be an ordinary person, a grotesque specter that seems to rise from the shadows.

Panic surges within you, igniting a primal instinct to flee. You scramble to your feet, heart pounding relentlessly against your ribcage as terror propels you forward. The snow crunches cacophonously beneath your frantic steps, each sound echoing in the stillness of the forest and slowing your desperate escape. You weave erratically between the towering trees, each one seeming to loom ominously as they shroud you in their embrace. After what feels like an eternity of frantic running, you finally collapse against a stout tree trunk, gasping for breath, your lungs burning.

But the relief is short-lived. A sickening dizziness washes over you once again, intensified by an overwhelming sensation of being watched, as if unseen eyes are tracking your every move. The forest around you seems alive, buzzing with a restless energy, the branches whispering secrets in the freezing wind. Before you can gather your scattered thoughts or make sense of the dread that has settled like a stone in your chest, darkness claims you once more as your head strikes against the rough bark.

When you awaken, you find yourself in a warm, cozy cabin that feels like a refuge against the bitter cold. The air is infused with the comforting scent of woodsmoke and something sweet, easing the ache in your head. You sit up carefully, noting with concern the throbbing pain that lingers. Your eyes scan the room, taking in the snug atmosphere filled with rustic charm—the wooden beams overhead, soft flickering shadows dancing on the walls, and the inviting glow of a fire crackling in the hearth.

Your gaze settles on a figure sitting in a chair near the fire, their back turned to you. The figure is tall and slim, yet possesses an aura of quiet strength. Suddenly, it turns to face you, and you catch your breath. The mask is gone, revealing a young man with strikingly pale skin and disheveled blond hair that curls slightly at the ends. His eyes, a deep, piercing blue, reflect the warmth of the flames.

He stands gracefully and steps toward you, a soft yet deep voice breaking the silence, laced with a noticeable German accent. “I found you unconscious in the woods… are you alright now?” His expression is a blend of concern and curiosity, and in that moment, you sense a flicker of hope mingling with your lingering fear.
