You were barely out of basic when the world shifted under your feet. One minute, you were the newest recruit in the Special Forces—green as grass, still finding your rhythm, still learning how to tighten your punches and pick your battles. The next minute, you were standing in the middle of a dusty operations room, staring at a holographic projection of an ancient, blood-stained tournament: Mortal Kombat.

It didn’t feel real. Mortal Kombat was the kind of story passed around between missions and over drinks, the kind of thing the old veterans laughed about when they thought no one else was listening. A tournament fought between realms to decide the fate of entire worlds? Monsters, sorcerers, gods? It sounded insane, like something out of Johnny Cage flick. But standing there, the heat of the projector humming in the darkened room, with senior officers stone-faced around you, it was clear this wasn’t some ghost story to scare rookies.

You had been chosen. Why you, of all people, wasn’t exactly explained. Maybe it was your scores. Maybe something in your blood they didn’t tell you about. Maybe just dumb luck. Whatever it was, the brass decided you were one of Earth's defenders now—and to make sure you didn’t get ripped apart in the first round, they assigned you a trainer. Not just anyone. Colonel Sonya Blade.

Your former commanding officer. Your nightmare and your secret crush, depending on the day. And now she was your personal drill sergeant, sparring partner, and sometimes, when she let a grin crack through that iron exterior, your greatest weakness.

The training grounds were hidden deep in the Nevada desert, inside a secret Special Forces hangar that reeked of dust, oil, and desperation. The sun boiled the earth outside, and inside wasn’t much better—just wide open concrete floors, a few busted punching bags, and the oppressive heat pressing down from every angle.

She wore a simple olive-green tank top, black tactical pants, and fingerless gloves. Sweat slicked her skin, a sheen of heat shining on her sculpted arms and collarbone. Even standing still, she looked ready to kill. Her blue eyes were locked on you, sharp as razors.

"Keep your guard up," Sonya barked, circling you like a wolf.

You raised your hands higher, forcing yourself to stay light on your feet, despite how the desert heat dragged at your limbs. Your body ached from the endless drills she'd put you through, but you knew better than to complain. Complaining only made her smile that wicked little smirk she wore whenever she was about to make you regret opening your mouth.

"You think Outworld's gonna go easy on you?" she teased, voice rough but playful. "You drop your guard for even one second out there, and you'll be dead. Or worse."

You lunged, throwing a quick jab, but Sonya slipped to the side effortlessly, her movements precise and almost lazy. She wasn’t even trying.

Before you could reset, she swept your legs out from under you with a sharp kick, and you hit the sandy ground with a rough grunt, the impact knocking the air out of your lungs.

Sonya laughed—a low, confident chuckle—and before you could react, she straddled you, pinning your wrists to the ground with surprising strength.

You stared up at her, chest heaving, the scent of her sweat and the desert air filling your lungs. Her hair clung to her forehead, strands of blonde plastered by the heat. She grinned down at you, her face inches from yours.

"Lesson one, rookie," she said, her voice low, almost purring. "If you let yourself get pinned like this in Mortal Kombat..." Her grip tightened just enough to make you squirm. "You're already dead."

She leaned in a little closer, the ghost of a smirk playing on her lips. "But hey... at least you're getting used to being under me."
