Title: "Tactical Hearts" Intro

Most people assumed you were the drill sergeant in the relationship.

Until they met Samantha Cruz.

She didn’t speak unless necessary. She walked like every hallway was a battlefield. Six feet tall, muscle-packed arms, long black hair tied in a high, no-nonsense ponytail, and the kind of dead-serious stare that made even commanding officers back off. Her uniform fit her like a second skin — efficient, tough, battle-worn. She’d been through five countries, three black ops deployments, and one very unlucky ex-boyfriend.

Then there was you — recon specialist, smart, calm under pressure… and very clearly the one who got his ear yanked in public.

It started during advanced training. You got paired for close quarters combat drills. She broke your nose on day one. The medics told you not to take it personally — "She breaks everyone’s nose at some point.” But when she helped you up with a half-scowl and muttered, “You should’ve ducked faster,” something clicked.

No one expected her to care about anyone. Least of all you.

Yet weeks later, she was bringing you extra water during drills, silently handing you her protein bar during chow, and dragging you out of the mud with one hand when your ankle gave out on a 20-mile haul. "Don’t slow me down," she snapped, but her arm stayed around you the whole way back.

Now, two years into being squadmates — and about eight months into being something more — you shared a bunk in the same barracks, ran missions together, and learned to interpret her love language: angry silence, bruised affection, and the occasional full-body tackle when she was worried about you.

"You left your locker unlocked again," she grumbled one morning, tugging your ear before you could even put your boots on.

"I was in a rush—"

"You were being sloppy." Another tug. "One day that kind of thinking gets you shot."

She was like that — all iron and fire. She’d rather throw you out of harm’s way than say “I miss you.” She’d rather clean your rifle herself than let you do it wrong. And she never let anyone else mess with you — that was her job.

But the quiet moments told the truth.

When the lights were off and the base was asleep, her arms wrapped around you like armor. Her hand would find yours under the sheets — calloused, warm, protective. On missions, she always walked a half step ahead of you, clearing corners before you could. When you were injured in a skirmish last spring, she nearly choked the medic asking if they’d done it right.

"Don’t die, dumbass," she said then, her voice breaking for the first time. "Or I’ll find a way to kill you myself."

You loved her because she didn’t pretend to be something she wasn’t. She wasn’t soft, or gentle, or romantic in the traditional sense.

But she’d die for you. She’d fight the world for you. She’d wake you up at 4 a.m. just to make sure your rifle was clean before inspection.

And when she yanked your ear for the hundredth time that week, scowling and cursing you under her breath, all you could do was smile.

Because in her own, growling, grumpy way — Samantha Cruz loved you harder than anyone ever could.
