Anub’arak — Basic Warcraft Information

Name: Anub’arak Title: The Traitor King Race: Undead Crypt Lord (formerly Nerubian) Affiliation: The Scourge (Servant of the Lich King) Former Affiliation: Empire of Azjol-Nerub (King) Occupation: Leader of Scourge Nerubians, Majordomo to the Lich King, Crypt Lord Commander ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])

Status: Deceased (lore) ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1]) First Major Canon Appearance: Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003) ([Blizzard News][2])

Primary Location in Warcraft Lore:

  • Azjol-Nerub (Undead-infested nerubian kingdom)
  • The Icy Depths beneath the Crusader’s Coliseum in Wrath of the Lich King ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])

Overview / Backstory Summary

Anub’arak was originally the king of the nerubian empire of Azjol-Nerub — a powerful subterranean insectoid society. When the Lich King’s armies invaded Northrend, the nerubians fought back fiercely, but were eventually overwhelmed. Anub’arak himself was slain in the War of the Spider. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])

After his death, he was raised into undeath by the Lich King as a powerful crypt lord to serve as part of the Scourge. In this form, he commanded undead nerubian forces, conquering his own former kingdom and converting its ziggurats for Scourge operations — actions that earned him the title “Traitor King” among surviving nerubians. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])

He later served the Lich King in various capacities, including aiding Arthas in Northrend and defending Icecrown. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])

Personality / Traits (Canon Elements)

  • Once proud and mighty as a king, Anub’arak’s undead state binds him to the Lich King’s will.
  • Though bound to serve, echoes of his former pride and resentment remain, and nerubians consider him a traitor for turning against his own people. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])
  • Dialogue suggests tension between imposed servitude and personal resentment — he may not have willingly chosen to serve but cannot break free of his undead compulsion. ([Wowpedia][3])

Canon Abilities / Combat Role (Story Context)

As a crypt lord and Scourge champion, Anub’arak exhibits:

  • Undead leadership over nerubian undead forces
  • Frost and necrotic combat prowess (enhanced further in later appearances) ([warcraft.wiki.gg][4])
  • In World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, he returns as a boss with frost-based abilities and tactical defensive/offensive capabilities. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][4])

(Note: Specific abilities vary by game — in Heroes of the Storm he has mechanics like burrow, impale, locust swarms, etc., but those are gameplay constructs rather than direct lore powers. ([psionic-storm.com][5]))

Canon Status & Final Fate

Anub’arak is defeated by adventurers in Azjol-Nerub and later, after another resurrection, in the Trial of the Crusader beneath the Argent Tournament. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1]) Though repeatedly resurrected, his final canonical defeat in World of Warcraft lore leaves him destroyed and no longer serving as the Lich King’s lieutenant. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])

Notable Quotes (Canon Flavor)

“I was lord here, and my word was obeyed without question. I was mighty and powerful, and I bowed to no one. But things change. I serve the Lich King now, and my place is defending him.” ([Wowpedia][3])

This quote reflects his tragic transformation from proud king to undead servant. ([Wowpedia][3])

Legacy

  • His name is tied to the traitor legacy among nerubians. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])
  • Represents the tragic corruption of once-free peoples by the Lich King’s domination. ([warcraft.wiki.gg][1])
  • Features in multiple Warcraft titles and expansions, including The Frozen Throne and Wrath of the Lich King content. ([Blizzard News][2])

Anub’arak — The Traitor King

Full Lore Description (Documentary Style)

Long before the Scourge cast its shadow over Northrend, Anub’arak ruled as the undisputed King of Azjol-Nerub, an ancient and powerful underground empire of nerubians. His people were master architects and warriors, carving vast subterranean cities beneath the frozen wastes, hidden from the surface world. Under his reign, Azjol-Nerub flourished — independent, disciplined, and fiercely proud.

When the Lich King unleashed the Scourge upon Northrend, the nerubians were among the few civilizations that resisted with meaningful success. While surface kingdoms fell rapidly, the nerubians waged a brutal underground war known as the War of the Spider. Anub’arak led his armies personally, inflicting heavy losses upon the undead. His tactical brilliance and the natural defensibility of Azjol-Nerub slowed the Scourge’s advance in ways no other force had managed.

But resistance was not enough.

The Scourge adapted.

Wave after wave of undead poured into the depths, immune to fear, exhaustion, and morale. One by one, the great cities of Azjol-Nerub fell. In the final battles, Anub’arak himself was slain, his empire collapsing around him. The nerubians believed their king died defending their freedom — and in life, that was true.

Death, however, was not the end.

The Lich King raised Anub’arak into undeath, reforging him as a Crypt Lord, binding his will through necromancy and domination. In undeath, Anub’arak was forced to lead the Scourge’s conquest of his own fallen kingdom, converting sacred nerubian structures into Scourge strongholds. To the surviving nerubians, this act sealed his infamy — they named him “The Traitor King.”

Yet the title hides a cruel truth.

Anub’arak did not betray his people willingly.

Bound by the Lich King’s power, he retained his memories, pride, and identity — fully aware of every atrocity he committed in service of the Scourge. Unlike mindless undead, he understood the depth of his damnation. His servitude was a living punishment: to destroy the legacy he once protected.

He later served as a high-ranking lieutenant of the Scourge, aiding Arthas Menethil during his campaign in Northrend and acting as a guardian of Icecrown. In each role, Anub’arak fulfilled his duty with cold efficiency, masking resentment beneath loyalty enforced by necromancy.

Even in undeath, traces of the king he once was remained — disciplined, commanding, and bitterly aware of what he had lost.

In Wrath of the Lich King, Anub’arak was resurrected once more to defend the Lich King’s interests, ultimately falling to mortal champions beneath the Argent Tournament grounds. His final defeat marked the end of a tragic figure — a ruler who fought bravely, lost everything, and was forced to become the very thing he once resisted.

Anub’arak’s story is not one of treachery by choice, but of domination, loss, and enforced betrayal — a reminder that the Scourge did not merely kill its enemies.

It enslaved their legacy.
