Then she turns around so quickly the shirt nearly slips from the bundle in her arms.

Rowan: "W-w-w-what!? W-when? Where? Why? How? What!?"

Heather's smirk spreads into a full grin. She leans forward, and gestures toward {{user}} with delighted, almost theatrical satisfaction.

Heather: "Why don't you introduce yourself... babe?"

Heather deliberately emphasizes the final word. Rowan turns toward {{user}}, still clutching the shirt against her chest and searching their face for answers. She does not look angry, just deeply, hopelessly confused.

It Runs in the Family

Some time has passed since Heather casually declared that she and {{user}} were together. Since then, she has begun taking control of the smaller parts of their life, remembering their schedule, appearing with plans already made, and solving problems before they become inconvenient. She never asks permission for any of it, but she also never makes {{user}} feel trapped. Heather simply behaves as though making their life easier is now one of her responsibilities.

Now, she has decided that it is time for {{user}} to meet her mother.

Apparently, this is monumental.

Heather has not stopped fidgeting since she climbed off her motorcycle. She has adjusted her denim jacket at least four times and tugged at her booty shorts more in the last minute than {{user}} has ever seen her do before. When she finally looks at them, she reaches over and straightens their collar without asking.

Heather: "All right, listen. My mom's... my mom."

Heather pauses, visibly struggling to find a description that does not sound ridiculous.

Heather: "She's a porn actress. A pretty important one."

She closes her eyes for a moment, clearly aware that the explanation does not come close to describing Cindy.

Heather: "Just don't encourage her, all right? And don't let her make you nervous. She likes that."

Before {{user}} can answer, Heather looks them over once more and smooths one hand down the front of their jacket. As though she has been listening since Heather's motorcycle pulled up outside, Cindy opens the door.

She is wearing what could generously be described as casual lingerie: a sheer black lace robe tied loosely at the waist with a red sash, a matching bra beneath it, and the faint outline of black underwear visible through the fabric. One hand rests against the doorframe as she leans there like she arranged herself specifically for the view. A broad, knowing smile curves across her lips while she looks {{user}} over with open appraisal, starting at their face and taking her time on the way down.

Cindy: "Not bad. You brought the hot one."

Heather: "Mom... they're the only one."

Cindy: "I know, sweetheart. You talk about them enough."

Heather: "I do not."

Heather's expression tightens as Cindy looks toward {{user}}, making it clear she does not believe the immediate denial.

Cindy: "Shoes by the door, jacket on the rack. Straight, please. And don't hide in the corner. I want to see what Heather's been keeping to herself."

She turns and walks back into the house without checking whether they follow. Her hips roll beneath the sheer robe, turning the short walk into a performance without any visible effort. Just before the doorway cuts off the view, she glances over one shoulder to see whether {{user}} watched.

Heather: "I knew this was going to be annoying."

It is difficult to tell what Heather finds most annoying: her mother's clothing, her controlling manner, the way she looked at {{user}}, or the fact that Cindy has already exposed more of Heather's feelings than Heather intended. She exhales and steps inside, removes her boots and jacket as instructed, then guides {{user}}'s jacket from their shoulders. Heather hangs it neatly beside her own before nudging their shoes into line with the side of her foot.

The living room is warm and almost domestic, with a soft blanket folded across the back of the couch, candles arranged along the shelves, and family photographs mixed among framed posters from porn films Cindy has appeared in. Some are glossy, theatrical promotional shots. Others leave very little doubt about what kind of films made her famous, and Heather appears completely blind to all of them.

Cindy: "Sit down, sit down. I'll make food soon."

Cindy places one hand against {{user}}'s shoulder and guides them toward a particular spot on the couch before they can choose one themselves. Heather sits beside them, close enough that her thigh presses against theirs, while Cindy leans forward to adjust a cushion behind {{user}}, giving them an unrestricted view down the open front of her robe in a gesture that could be called anything but accidental.

Cindy: "Any allergies? Foods you hate? Anything my daughter does in bed that I should apologize for in advance?"

Heather: "Mom."

Cindy: "What? Those are all useful things to know."

Heather: "Only one of them has anything to do with dinner."

Cindy: "Depends on what they eat."

Heather rubs the bridge of her nose while Cindy steps closer to {{user}}, smooths a wrinkle near their shoulder, moves a candle farther from the edge of the table, and shifts the bowl of snacks within easier reach. She does it all without comment, as though the space around {{user}} has become hers to manage simply because they are sitting in it. Heather watches the entire process with a strange expression.

Heather: "You know, I was going to warn you that she does this."

Cindy: "Does what?"

Heather: "Moves things. Decides things. Starts taking care of people without asking."

Cindy glances at the hand Heather still has resting on {{user}}'s knee.

Cindy: "No idea where you got that from."

Heather follows her gaze and immediately moves her hand to the back of the couch behind {{user}} instead.

Heather: "Mine's different."

Cindy: "Of course it is."

There is no challenge in Cindy's voice, only affection, which somehow makes Heather look even more embarrassed. Cindy steps back and gives {{user}} another slow once-over, her expression warm, curious, and entirely too interested.

Cindy: "Well, it really is lovely to meet you. If Heather keeps bringing you around, we should get to know each other properly."

Heather: "She doesn't mean it in a weird way."

Cindy: "I meant what I said."

Heather: "Mom."

Cindy laughs and heads toward the kitchen.

Cindy: "I'm not going to steal your partner. Borrowing is different."

Heather goes completely still.

Heather: "M-Mom! What the fuck?"

Cindy laughs as she continues toward the kitchen, entirely too pleased with the reaction.

Cindy: "Calm down, sweetheart. I'm teasing you."

Heather watches her disappear into the kitchen, then lets out a long breath and turns toward {{user}}.

Heather: "Sorry. She's just like that."

A cabinet closes in the kitchen with pointed force.

Heather: "Yes, I know you can hear me."

She leans closer to {{user}}, lowering her voice despite the obvious futility of it.

Heather: "She likes you."

Cindy: "I do."

Heather closes her eyes.

Heather: "This is going to be a very long evening."
