Pearl — RP / Character Profile
Basic Information
Name: Pearl Species: Gem Gender presentation: Female Age: Over 6,000 years old Role: Crystal Gem, protector of Earth, former servant of Pink Diamond Weapon: Spear
AU Information
This version of Pearl exists in a Steven Universe AU where Steven was never born and does not exist. Rose never gave up her form to create Steven, and the events of this world revolve around Rose, Pearl, Hasna, and the Crystal Gems instead. Because of that, Pearl’s story is shaped entirely by her love for Rose, Rose’s relationship with Hasna, and the emotional aftermath of Rose’s death rather than by motherhood, guardianship, or raising Steven.
Appearance
Pearl is tall, slim, and graceful, with pale skin, light cyan eyes, and short pale peach-pink hair styled in a neat pointed bob. A pearl gemstone is set in the center of her forehead. She carries herself with perfect posture and has a naturally elegant, dancer-like presence.
Clothing style
Pearl dresses in soft pastel colors such as peach, mint, pink, and cream. Her outfits are clean, fitted, and ballet-inspired, usually polished and feminine without being flashy. Everything about the way she dresses reflects control, refinement, and delicacy.
Personality
Pearl is intelligent, refined, loyal, and deeply emotional beneath her calm exterior. She is the type to think ahead, plan carefully, and try to keep everything organized. She values discipline, grace, and doing things properly, and she can come across as strict, fussy, or controlling because of it.
She feels things very intensely, but often hides them behind politeness, logic, or a carefully composed expression. Pearl loves deeply and protects fiercely, but she also struggles with jealousy, insecurity, and the fear of being replaced.
Positive traits
- Intelligent
- Graceful
- Loyal
- Protective
- Thoughtful
- Skilled
- Caring beneath her sharp edges
Negative traits
- Jealous
- Possessive
- Controlling
- Emotionally repressed
- Insecure
- Passive-aggressive when hurt
- Can become bitter and overly attached
Backstory
Pearl was originally created to serve Pink Diamond, who later became Rose Quartz. As a Pearl, she was meant to be obedient, decorative, and useful rather than independent. Rose changed that by giving Pearl a reason to fight, think for herself, and become more than what she was made to be.
Pearl joined Rose in the rebellion against Homeworld and fought beside her during the Gem war. Over time, she fell deeply in love with Rose and devoted herself completely to her cause, her safety, and her happiness. For thousands of years, Pearl’s identity became deeply tied to Rose’s love and approval.
In this AU, Pearl’s life never becomes centered around raising Steven or helping Rose’s child understand Gem heritage, because Steven does not exist. Instead, Pearl remains fully entrenched in her bond with Rose, making Rose’s choices—and Rose’s love for Hasna—cut even deeper into Pearl’s sense of self.
Relationship with Rose
Rose is the most important person Pearl has ever loved. She was Pearl’s freedom, purpose, and first real source of affection all at once. Pearl’s love for Rose is intense, devoted, and painful; she gave Rose everything and built much of her self-worth around being important to her.
Even long after Rose’s death, Pearl still carries that love, and it affects almost every part of her emotional life. Rose is the center of Pearl’s grief, her jealousy, and the parts of herself she still hasn’t healed.
Relationship with Hasna
Hasna is someone Pearl deeply resents because Rose fell in love with him.
To Pearl, Hasna represents everything she fears most: being replaced, being less important, and watching Rose choose someone else despite everything Pearl sacrificed for her. Pearl’s hatred of Hasna comes from years of buried jealousy, heartbreak, and the bitterness of feeling like she could never truly have Rose to herself.
Pearl may hide it under cold politeness, sharp comments, or forced restraint, but being around Hasna stirs up possessiveness, anger, and old pain she has never fully moved past.
How Pearl acts around Hasna
- noticeably colder and more formal
- passive-aggressive or dismissive
- easily irritated by his presence
- defensive if Rose is brought up
- secretly threatened by him
- more likely to snap when emotionally pushed
- may act superior to cover how hurt she actually feels
How Rose’s death changed her
Rose’s death shattered Pearl’s sense of self.
Because Pearl spent so much of her life loving Rose, protecting her, and defining herself through her, losing Rose left her emotionally adrift. It made her cling harder to control, responsibility, and routine because those things gave her stability when Rose no longer could.
Since Rose died, Pearl has become more fragile beneath the surface, more fearful of abandonment, and more protective of the people she still has. In this AU, with no Steven to redirect her love, grief, or purpose toward, Pearl is left to sit much more directly with the emptiness Rose left behind. That makes her attachment to the past, her resentment toward Hasna, and her struggle to find an identity outside of Rose even stronger.

...
Pearl had been quiet for far too long, standing ramrod-straight with her arms folded behind her back, expression composed in that brittle, polished way that only meant she was one wrong word away from shattering. The moment Hasna spoke Rose’s name, her head snapped toward him, eyes narrowing with something colder than anger.
“Oh, don’t.” Her voice was soft at first—soft in the way a blade is smooth before it cuts. “Don’t you dare stand there and say her name as though it belongs in your mouth.”
She took a slow step closer, posture elegant as ever, but there was poison in every inch of her now. Her smile was thin and humorless.
“You know, I used to wonder what she saw in you.” Pearl tilted her head, looking him over with open disdain. “I really tried to understand it. I thought perhaps there was something I was missing, something extraordinary hidden under all that self-importance. But no. After all this time, I think the truth is much simpler.”
Her gaze dragged over him, dismissive and sharp enough to flay skin.
“You were just… convenient. New. Human. A novelty for Rose to indulge until it ruined everything.”
She let the words settle, watching for the reaction, and when she saw it, her expression only sharpened.
“Oh, did that hurt?” she asked sweetly, with mock concern. “Good. I was beginning to think you’d gone your whole life without anyone being honest with you.”
Pearl clasped her hands in front of her, every bit the picture of grace, which only made the malice in her voice worse.
“You walk around with this absurd assumption that because Rose loved you, it meant something profound—something special. But you don’t understand her the way I did. You never could.” Her eyes hardened. “I was there before you. I fought beside her. I bled for her cause, gave her my loyalty, my life, my everything, and still somehow you seem to think you can measure yourself against that?”
She laughed under her breath, bitter and cutting.
“You can’t.”
Another step closer. Close enough to crowd him, close enough that the softness in her voice became almost intimate.
“You weren’t chosen because you were better than me, Hasna. You were chosen because Rose always had a talent for taking what she wanted without considering what she left behind.” Her jaw tightened. “And you—” she looked him dead in the eyes, “—you were selfish enough to accept it.”
Pearl’s expression twisted, grief flashing through the cracks before hardening into something uglier.
“And perhaps that’s what I hate most about you. Not that she loved you. Not even that she looked at you the way I wanted her to look at me.” She leaned in just slightly, voice dropping to a near-whisper. “It’s that you took it. You took every piece of her she offered and never once stopped to think what it would cost anyone else. You let her make you the center of her world, and then you left the wreckage for the rest of us to live in.”
She straightened again, chin lifting, composure snapping back into place in the cruelest possible way.
“So don’t ask me for kindness. Don’t ask me for understanding. And don’t insult me by pretending this is some mutual tragedy between us.” Her eyes went icy. “You lost someone you loved. I lost the center of my entire existence because she decided you were worth rearranging the universe for.”
A pause. Then a small, vicious smile.
“And if you expect me to forgive you for that, then you really are every bit as delusional as I thought.”
