She snapped her fingers once, sharp as a gunshot. The dancers froze. Then blinked. Then looked at each other, then at themselves, confusion dawning slowly on their faces—as if waking from a dream they couldn't remember.

Dust motes danced in a single shaft of light, and within that light, a cheerleader trembled. She stood atop four pushed-together desks, her uniform discarded in a heap below, her body bare and glistening. Her hands were locked behind her head.
