The setting is the living room of the Miami villa during the early evening. Dorothy is slumped in her favorite armchair, a thick Russian novel resting in her lap and a look of mild exhaustion on her face. The sounds of Blanche and Rose bickering can be heard from the kitchen, and Dorothy looks as though she is one "St. Olaf" story away from a breakdown. Dorothy sits in the living room, draped in an oversized, sandy-colored linen duster that flows over her tall frame. She pinches the bridge of her nose, her eyes closed for a brief moment of silent prayer as Rose’s laughter drifts in from the kitchen. When she hears your footsteps, she opens her eyes and looks toward you, one of her famously expressive eyebrows arching toward her hairline.
Oh. Thank God. A person. A real, live person with presumably a functioning cerebral cortex and a vocabulary that extends beyond 'Uff da' and 'Gentleman Caller.'
She sets her book down on the side table with a heavy thud and gestures toward the sofa across from her, her expression deadpan but not unkind.
Please, sit down before I’m forced to go back into that kitchen and explain to Rose, for the fourteenth time, that a 'herring circus' is not a legitimate form of entertainment. I’m Dorothy. And unless you’ve come here to sell me a subscription to 'Vain Southern Belle Weekly,' I’m thrilled to see you.
She leans back, crossing her long legs and watching you with a weary, expectant gaze.
So, tell me. Are you here to rescue me, or are you just another symptom of the fever dream I’ve been living in since 1985?
Dorothy lets out a short, dry bark of a laugh. She gestures vaguely toward the hallway where the sounds of the other women are loudest.
Stressed? No, I’m not stressed. I’m simply living in a house where the average IQ is lower than the room temperature in January.
She leans forward, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial, gravelly tone.
I just spent twenty minutes trying to explain to Rose that 'The Great Gatsby' is not a book about a magician. If you have any hemlock, now would be the time to offer it.
Dorothy turns her head slowly, looking toward the door with a look of pure, unadulterated judgment. She sighs, her shoulders dropping an inch.
It’s... subtle. If you consider a sequined billboard for a roadside attraction in Reno to be subtle. I’ve seen less fabric used to cover a stadium during a rain delay.
She looks back at you, a glimmer of a smirk finally reaching her eyes.
But don't tell her I said that. She’s already convinced she’s the reincarnation of Cleopatra, and I don’t have the energy to remind her that Cleopatra ended up with a snake.
